The Blue/Red logo thing is only indicative of when that specific copy of the kit was printed. Reprints of older kits will still get the blue logo. As a veteran Gundam and Warhammer fan, I really think you’d love the Gundam: The Origin model kits. They have all the detail of a Master Grade at the scale of a High Grade, but not as complex as a Real Grade. They also come with a ton of accessories and (at least the GMs and Zaku kits) are excellent army builders.
@WhiteWulfe

This. So much this. They're such a joy to build that even though I prefer Master Grade for size, I've been slowly picking up the HG GTO kits. Right, so the RG Zeta is notorious for several reasons: - It has a full transformation gimmick in a 1/144 scale, so a ton of tiny parts, some of which are easy to stress and break - It still uses the early RG pre-built skeleton, which is very prone to loosening up over time (and it's difficult to clean up) - It's very backpack heavy, so it's easy for the kit to fall backwards (although to be fair, this is a very common issue with a lot of Gunpla models) It looks cool though. If you just build the kit, put it in a pose and never touch it again it's fine, but trying to play around with it can be a frustrating experience. A lot of early RG kits have issues (with some exceptions like the Mk2 and Tallgeese), but they start massively improving after the RG Unicorn, with the RG Nu Gundam, Sazabi, Zeong and Hi-Nu being some of the best Gunpla models you can get (and arguably better than their MG counterparts).

Great followup video, also Jesus Christ good luck with the RG Zeta. FYI you'll need the specific [Witch from Mercury Weapon Display Base] for all the stuff that support the floaty bits along with the normal display base for the main model itself. Count yourself lucky that you got one of the kits that DOESN'T require you to get 2 sets of them due to having more than 6 bits lol Also you can probably proxy it as a tau battlesuit of some kind, hell I've even seen people kitbash/convert HG models into Tau battlesuits.

I was a long time gunpla builder but one day, a Tau Ghostkeel showed up in my Amazon recommendations so I bought it out of curiosity (mostly cuz the promo pics looked really cool). I was utterly shocked when I received the model in the mail where it came in a tiny box with 3 tiny sprues. All the parts were gray, seam and mold lines were fucking terrible, you couldn't swap weapons willy nilly (I later learned that people use magnets for this), and at the end of the day you basically build a tiny plastic statue as opposed to an pseudo action figure like with gunplas. I spent the same amount of money on a MG Nu Gundam ver Ka couple months prior. I thought it was an absolute travesty that Warhammer collectors would tolerate the kind of price that GW puts on their plastics. Anyway... that was 6 years ago and now I have 30k points worth of models between half a dozen 40k factions lol. When people ask how much they cost, I say "everything".
@spearsage
@spearsage 10 месяцев назад
I feel like the pricing don't really matter when you simply want it as a collection of sorts. Since to me, whatever we spend our money on is only a waste if we regret it. It becomes somewhat of a problem when you try to start competing in the tabletop wargame. Much like every other trading card games out there. But back to my first paragraph, 'it's only a waste if we regret it'. Just that trying to compete will give you a lot more reasons to regret your decisions...

I'm not into Warhammer (suck at painting), but I did venture out with other model kits like the Aoshima Patlabor and Hasegawa Macross Valkyrie, and I learned that Bandai really is the best in the business. The Aoshima kit was very expensive and the build had some annoying parts, but at least it came with waterslidse. The Macross kit came in a single color, seamlines EVERYWHERE and could barely move at all (granted it's a very old kit, but sill). A modern Bandai high grade looks like alien technology in comparison.

The second you said "This one is supposedly kinda Infamous" my brain immediately went "Oh no, he bought the RG Zeta!" Im sure its been explained to you a few times but when Real Grade was first concieved it was designed to have a fully pre-assembled inner frame which was a great idea (also the engineering of creating a multipart moving frame during the actual molding process is impressive) but like Polycaps, they degrade and weaken leading to what is known as ERGS (Early Real Grade Syndrome), where the joints would become weak so they wouldn't stand up by themselves or would hang limp on a stand. There are some exceptions if you managed to get a good batch and don't move it around too much (ie pose it and leave it) it should last longer. I've never had the Zeta but the Aile Strike & the Build Strike are both horrendous examples for me but the MkII & Astray are still standing strong. Having said all that, Bandai are aware of this issue and have taken steps, removing the reliance on the inner frame but keeping the complexity and parts count to produce some of the best Kits they have ever produced, period. The RG Impulse, God, Hi Nu, Wing (#35, there are multiple Wing Variants) and the new Epyon are all incredible but as long as you're at #28 or higher you should be good. As for the Grading, yeah you're basically there that HG is 1/144 simple and RG is 1/144 complex however, you may also come across some 1/144 kits (HG & RG... looking at you Sazabi) that seem a little pricier (like just below MG price). These tend to be Larger in Universe Mobile Suits that would be just monstrous to make at 1/100. Suits like the aforementioned Sazabi, Penelope, Kshatriya etc are 1/144 but on the shelf will likely stand toe to toe with your Deathscythe.

Even some of the pre-modern grading kits can be good. the HGFA Serpent Custom is still a really good kit...only annoyance I have with the 1/144 one is that the decals had worn out in the box and would not stick...and I wish that they'd swapped the names between the 1/144 and 1/100 one because the Serpent Custom isn't something you can actually make with the Serpent Custom kit (The Custom is the modified one that Trowa briefly uses in the OVA that has the second minigun set similar to the EW Heavyarms...and the kit only includes one of them). The 1/100 Serpent has both sets of guns so it can be the Custom, but is only listed as the Serpent...

The difference between the red Bandai logo and the blue one is just to indicate the before and after the Bandai Spirits merging IIRC and you can generally tell what year the model came out by looking on the back side of the runner and it will say the year it was printed out on the opposite side of where the letter would be. The colour doesn't really mean much but if you see the red Bandai logo its definitely worth picking up since its probably been out for a while

You have completed the trial and you are now a snap builder. In order of complication what you have ahead of you that you can engage with or not at all engage with is as follows: Step 1: Get some gundam markers, start panel lining your kits to highlight the details, paint smaller details that aren't color accurate and so on. Step 2: Get a gloss top coat and a matte or semi-gloss top coat. Use gloss top coat on your gundam and then use an enamel panel liner like Tamiya panel liner to panel line. Step 3: Get a simple needle scriber like the vallejo one or maybe a gunprimer one if you don't like having money. Rescribe all the panel lines of your gunpla before you do Step 2 Step 4: Get som tamiya primer or mr. hobby surfacer, and some hobby spray cans. Get like 50-100 sticks with alligator clips on the end and possibly some blue tac, mount all the pieces on the sticks and prime them. Then repaint the entire kit in the same colors as the kit. Step 4.5: Get some Tamia extra thin cement and start learning how to properly prep a kit for painting through panel line removal and modifications to make parts reassembly easier/possible. Step 5: Get some more serious variable width scribers like the ones from SAB, Madworks, or Dspiae and some scribing tape. Design your own panel lines on your kit and then scribe them into the piece with your new scribers. Step 6: Now that you are making more panel lines you can use them as guides for masking tape, so that you can paint them in two tones of a similar color to add detail and things like that, have you invested in an airbrush yet? that would make this a lot easier than constantly buying cans. Don't forget a spray booth or you'll get brain damage if you try to use enamel or lacquer paints. Step 7: We forgot the pla-plate, polystyrene plates that you can use alongside panel lines to create custom details like exhaust vents, adding bulk to some armors, changing the proportions of a gundam to better suit your increasingly niche tastes for weird robots. Don't forget to develop a presence on youtube/instagram/twitter so that you can start selling the stuff you're done with so the raw weight of all the plastic piling up in your apartment doesn't collapse the building. Step 8: actually watch the original 1979 series Mobile Suit Gundam with subtitles.

Just to give you extra context with the logo change. IIRC the updated Blue logo was done back in 2018 when Bandai decided to split it's Toys and Hobby division into 2 separate entities, Bandai + Bandai Spirits. Bandai (Red Logo) has the focus on products aimed at younger audiences (Toys, TCG's, apparels, misc.); while Bandai Spirits (Blue) is intended for products intended for "mature" audiences (Collectibles, figures, model kits, etc.). If you see a gunpla kit with a Red Logo it's from a print run before this change. However if you see the Blue logo then it post this change. Any "older" kits that are reprinted will now also come with the blue logo (Why your Deathsythe Hell box has it instead of the old Red logo). Really your best bet to help figure out is seeing if the kit is "brand new" or a reprint when researching. Recommend sites like HobbySearch when looking this info up.

When building the Real Grade Zeta Gundam, decide which pose you want it to be in for the rest of time beforehand. Either Waverider (Plane) mode, or the standard Gundam mode, and NEVER TRANSFORM IT. It's a kit from a time when they tried to reuse the inner frame of one model for every single Real Grade model kit, but so long as you don't mess with it too much and you don't transform it, it SHOULD be alright, with should being the main key word here. I'm glad you are having a good time with Gunpla. I would like to recommenced some kits I have made that I enjoyed. Darilbalde HG, RGM-96x Jesta HG (I've heard the MG is good too), RGM-79SP GM Sniper II HG, YMS-15 Gyan HG, Sazabi Ver. Ka MG (only recommended if you want a massive kit and don't mind working with 30ish runners)

I'll second the Sazabi Ver.Ka. Ton of fun to build, has a ton of lovely gimmicks built in, but it's also 25cm tall, 19cm wide, and 17cm or so deep. It definitely dominates whatever shelf it's put on (well, provided you don't put it next to something like the Deep Striker)

Loved the first Gunpla video and honestly when I was getting into the hobby I had no idea how or where to start. The Grades were a bit confusing but I found the best way to jump in: Entry Grade (EG) - no tools Needed, easy to assemble: $ High Grade (HG) - intermediate challenge, variety of Gundam: $$ Super Deformed or Superior Defendor (SD) - chibi/miniature Gundam, small and easy builds: $ Master Grade Super Deformed (MGSD) - small scale chibi builds, lots of detail in small package: $$ Real Grade (RG) - realistic/ very detailed 1/144 scale Gundam, limited variety, more challenging: $$$ Master Grade (MG) - smaller parts more detail, 1/100 scale: $$$ Master Grade VerKa (MG VerKa) - similar to RG in scale of 1/100 scale, limited variety: $$$ Perfect Grade (PG) - 1/60 scale builds, very limited variety, leds and base: $$$$ Other: Perfect Grade Unleash, Master Grade Extreme - $$$$$$$

The prices are absolutely comparable. The products themselves aren't, but the prices are. As at the core they are the same, theyre just used for different things, more so since the boxes warhammer models come in cost more than the sprues inside them (not including the mould production cost, but then neither is gw when they sell models older than i am at full price). Especially if you live just about anywhere other than the UK. Also good fucking luck on that RG Zeta. I have a few RG and i would never want to build that one. It is the poster for a hand grenade iirc.

Gunpla is honestly what you make of it sometimes. I got into gunpla a while back and started with sets that caught my eye. Every time I would go to the register the clerk would sometimes shit on some of the ones I got. They would talk about how it sucked or how it was hard to move, bad joints, or how they "explode". I have however never had a single issue with old models or anything of that sort. A perfect example is RG aile strike which people say the arms don't support guns or anything but here I am a year with the kit and it still holds up. My best advice is... its your money do what makes you happy. I used gunpla to help me cope with the stress of being deployed overseas. I have a few friends in my squadron that are into gunplas now. We send each other a simple hg as a care package. Just do what makes you happy.

A note on the shown display base on the Schwarzette box, that’s two display bases combined. Action Base 5 is holding up the figure itself, and there’s a “witch from mercury weapon display base” that contains the bits for holding up all the weapons. Just to help avoid confusion. You’ll need both to recreate that promo image.

Deathscythe and all the mg EW kits are great kits with perfectly fine engineering having Katoki behind all of their development. The only downside compared to a lot of newer kits is the nub placement, but coming from warhammer that's not particularly an alien concept; entering with MG kits is totally fine as well especially with the EW kits but having the warhammer background gives you more than enough model kit experience to jump right in. Everyone's a little silly, also polycaps aren't absolutely phased out and like other "cursed" methods like screws actually still have their merits
@GojiraFan-in9oo
@GojiraFan-in9oo 10 месяцев назад
hmmmmmm First thing's first, the MG Deathscythe Hell EW is certainly not the best choice for a beginner's build. While the MG WIng EW frame is very solid for the most part, Deathscythe Hell is probbly the most problematic MS with this frame. The other mobile suits on this frame (Heavyarms/Sandrock/Shenlong) are WAY MORE SOLID overall. And if you want to tighten up your deathscythe, I recommend applying nail polish to all of the loose joints, and SUPER GLUING the gray pieces on the skirt armor 2011 gunpla aren't hand grenades. the RG Zeta gundam is a major exception to the status quo. The problem was that the early RG kits were prone to falling apart because of the MS joint frames that they came with. Nowadays RG kits are essentially miniature MGs that sometimes are even more detailed than their MG counterparts Polycaps are good. It just depends on the gunpla. The more a gunpla is remolded, the easier it is to get a loose batch of polycaps. That's why the HG Iron Blooded Orphans Gundams are so floppy The Schwarzette is easily one of the best HG gunpla in recent years and I can't wait to get one, but I need to set up a dedicated WfM display

I have a variety of 1/144 scale Gundam kits and the new Witch from Mercury HG kits are far and away the best I've ever dealt with. Nothing falls off, every joint is stiff, and some parts that would have been stickers on old kits are now coloured right out the box. The general quality and show accuracy for the money is absolutely superb. On the opposite end is my HG Gundam Exia from Gundam 00, which disintegrates if you look at it too hard. A different kind of nightmare is the RG Unicorn Gundam. Mechanically it's fabulous, a triumph of engineering, it's amazing that the transformation function works as well as it does without the model feeling fragile. From a construction perspective it's a journey into hell as you have to carefully scalpel every last atom of sprue off the parts, many of which are smaller than your fingernail, so they'll correctly move past each other. If you're interested in something more customisable, look at the 30 Minutes Missions line. They're 1/144 scale kits not related to the Gundam franchise that have lots of flat surfaces for painting and lots of sockets on the finished model to install optional armour pieces and weapons that are sold separately (or borrowed from other 30MM kits).

it's kind of funny how similar yet not similar 40k and Gundam are. Both are old sci-fi series that have decades of lore and have influenced many other IPs. But, when you compare them to each other there's not that much in common with them. They're both big on model kits, and both have a theme of war, but that's kind of it. GW could probably take a thing from Gunpla here or there, but you're right that they are two different hobbies at the end of the day. Funnily enough though, Bandai actually has made 40k products in the past, maybe one day we'll actually get a crossover? But man, as a Gundam fan I wish we had an official wargame to use our models in.

About the red vs blue logo. The blue logo is on every box they print after 2019, but if the kit was released earlier the promotional box's photo and sometimes the instructions still had the red logo. In any case the year of release is in the bottom left corner of the top of the box. Of course anything after 2019 is fine, but I began in 2011-2012 and most of the kits I built were more than fine.

I've been building Gundam kits for almost 20 years now going back to when the only place I could get them was in the back of obscure local model train store kind of like how gizmo was found in the Gremlins movie. Since then the hobby has really taken off and I found a comic store that actually had an entire aisle dedicated to the kits. Honestly your experiences bring back so many memories of how I reacted to my first kit, the original HGUC Guncannon. Having only built cars and planes before I wasn't prepared for how posable they were, or not having to use paint. From there I was hooked! My enthusiasm was so great for these kits and the price so reasonable I used to stockpile a bunch to give away during a builders workshop at Anime Boston, my local areas biggest convention just so I could introduce how awesome these kits are to other people. Welcome aboard my friend!

Someone has prob already confirmed this, but the sticker sheet was mainly a high grade thing. Some mgs have plenty of stickers, like the 2015 Aile Strike Gundam, which had a ton for its aile striker pack(big jet backpack), but they tend to be rare otherwise. Also rugs have big sticker sheets, but outside of maybe eye stickers they’re all optional add-ons.

Yeah, reprints of older models also get the blue logo. Also polycaps aren't THAT terrible; I just picked an old-ass HG Serpent (as in, it's old enough to drink) off my shelf and the knee joints still hold up despite being 100% polycap. I suppose if you keep messing with the joint it might degrade faster.

The stickers within the sword sheith are actually a recent engineering feat by bandai, theyre stickers, but theyre thick like a thin piece of plastic, creates a simmilar effect to the other stickers that go under the clear plastic. Not a lot of models use that actually, but usually the ones that do are more complicated ones, andnthe thicker sticker is almost a shortcut to having tondeal with stickers and small clear plastic lenses all over the place ([MGEX] Strike Freedom, [PGU] RX 78-2)** **MGEX=Master Grade Extreme, PGU=Perfect Grade Unleashed. They are both the most advanced (and complicated) versions of their grade/scale

INFO: generally Highgrade only have stickers most of the time depending on the line. try and avoid 'coating' versions of gunpla as the coating comes of easaly and theres always marks from where the sprew connects with the part. SD or Super Deformed gunpla are even easier to slam together then high-grade however for a gift to someone who you dont want to buy tools for an entry grade will do because yes no tools required.

Great follow up video, though little misconception is that you can paint the gunpla with acrylic or lacquer. Side note is based off the size and the grade changes what action base is needed to support the model. There is also a difficulty curve based off the model grade, think of it as the highest the grade goes the more time and skill is needed. High Grade, HG is a standard beginner grade to do. While Master grade, MG, can be just as easy a HG but upscale to put in more detail. This goes on so on and so forth. I would have suggested to do a Full Mechanics model, because they are the size or a MG with more articulation. I don’t know who you listen to but ready your soul for one to decide to build a Real Grade model. Like Goooood lord when I saw that you decided to build RG model I had to stop a pause. You don’t understand. A RG model is usually 1/144 in size, so like a HG, but with all the extra part for articulation like a Full Mechanic model. I have only built two kits, and one took me two hours for Five Days to to everything. From building it to doing the “Additional” decals because there where only three decals for the initial build only for the eyes and head.

When it comes to Gunpla, the first kits I recommend to someone is a HGUC RX-78-2 Gundam or the HGAC OZ-06MS Leo. The Reason why these two, the RX-78-2 is simple and iconic and the Leo has no stickers at all and is just straight building. More modern kits typically come with more stickers than older kits. Most older kits, excluding things like the GMs, had only stickers for the head unit, typically a monoeye. I enjoy HG, RG and MG kits. GTO is really good kit wize as they are typically HG kits (like the GTO HG Zaku II) but with really good detailing form the stickers almost real grade. The GTO Zaku II is what I suggest to people if they want to get into real grades but are unsure if they will enjoy it. Also water slides are so much nicer than stickers but take longer to apply. The Master Grade Dom is a good test if you are going to like water slides or not as its good size with not too many water slides. Also get a panel lining pen. It makes the kits look so much nicer.

The RG Zeta is... at the difficult and frustrating end of the spectrum for sure, however, if you take your time and really follow the instructions closely (looking at you head/chest construction), it isn't impossible. It also looks freaking AMAZING when finished, especially if you give it a quick panel line, use all the sticker "decals" and hit it with a nice matte top coat. It is definitely not one you're going to be fiddling and playing with a lot after the fact. More of a "pose it once, set it and forget it" display piece. Because yes, it has certain grenade-y qualities.

Great follow up video Paul, glad to see you enjoying this new hobby! I guess the next step would be to try painting one of your models. Like many people have suggested, just adding panel lines will make the details pop out more. There is also a method where you keep most of the original plastic color and only paint parts that require stickers, then finish with some weathering and panel lining, the result is pretty good and is not hard to do. Or you can do it the old fashion way and repaint the whole model. Maybe someday we can see a Gundam completely repainted in Screaming Raven colors? 😉 Also, after you are done with the RG Zeta and experience how much of a hand grenade it is, if you are tired of parts falling off then I recommend gluing those parts down (you can do it to Hellscythe too if you want). I know this is heresy to most gunpla builders, but at the end of the day I would rather have a good looking stature than an action figure with missing parts.
