@THE TWO FINGERED BRUTE I am not saying it's a fix for everybody but you can buy a pump for £25 and silicone sealant for a £1 a tube and cheap ply for less than £20 a sheet that you will need to seal with varnish and 50% thinners. The total amount will be under £100 as much as a night out. So what's more important a night out or keeping your house free from water damage. I own a pump and hose and I don't live in a flood area but bought it just incase.

@piggypiggypig1746
@piggypiggypig1746 4 года назад
@@geeksqueak7123 Privilege is not how I would describe it. He probably worked hard for his money. Maybe even risking everything he owned to start a business. It's a bit like saying, a homeowner in a flood-hit area has more privilege than a man living in a caravan. A man in a caravan has more privilege than a homeless man. A homeless man has more privilege than a refugee. A refugee has more privilege than a prisoner of war, and prisoner of war has more privilege than someone in a death camp.
@geeksqueak7123
@geeksqueak7123 4 года назад
@@piggypiggypig1746 With respect, I think you've missed the point. Privilege means an advantage only accessible to a specific individual or group. Not everyone has the wealth and resources accessible to them in order to make these changes. A lot of people who live on flood plains might not even own their own house, or be able to afford to renovate to this standard even if they do. It's not an attack on this dude, but rather pointing out that sometimes "whinging to the authorities" is the only course of action vulnerable people can reasonably afford to take.
@piggypiggypig1746
@piggypiggypig1746 4 года назад
@@geeksqueak7123 No worries, I understood your point, that's why I have a problem with the wording. Privilege envokes a sense of undeserved or unfair advantage or entitlement. We can not know this. I totally agree that not everyone has the wealth and resources accessible to them in order to make those changes. Directing one's anger at greedy councils and property developers who continue to build on flood plains might be the only recourse, but I would have thought that its the homeowners responsibility to have a flood risk assessment carried out on the property before purchase, whinging about it afterwards is not going to help them. Do I feel sorry for them, sure.
@geeksqueak7123
@geeksqueak7123 4 года назад
@@piggypiggypig1746 No, it doesn't. It means that you have access to resources that other people don't have access to. That's the definition. If people don't have the resources and wealth to make these changes, you consequently lack the privileged position to build flood defences. This dude is immensely privileged to be in the position to do this, and those resources simply aren't available to the overwhelming majority of people, many of whom don't even own their own homes.
