I built an $800 PC in 2008 and it was my main computer until the end of 2016. Very reliable 3Ghz e8400 core 2 duo paired with 8800GTX video card. Technology certainly stagnated in the last decade. The computer I built in 2016 to replace it might last until 2030 if the components hold up.

i paid 30 bucks in April for a E8400 in a TFX Case with 2GB RAM, DVD/CDRW, and 160GB HDD. Put 4GB of RAM and added a Radeon HD5450 1GB BOOM! a quick and easy windows 7 machine for a HTPC for Kodi and Netfix! 720p @ 60fps, no problem! I just need a better TFX PSU... 270W is okay.

That thing is pretty hardcore, with a small formfactor wooden case, a rockium processor and a cutting edge screen made out of quality canvas. The memory depended on how tired you were when using it, which was the best that could be done at the time. Also it had no GPU, as there was no need for one at the time, making it unable to even display a Picture. But it could handle about 0.5 calculations per second at it's peak, sometimes exceeding times of even 1 calculation per minute. The most expensive parts of the PC were the case, and the canvas screen, as canvas was pretty damn expensive at the time and the case was custom made. The canvas cost 1900$ and the case cost 110$. Let's just say i wouldn't play Minecraft on it.

It's crazy how much longer computers last now. I built a gaming PC in 2012 for $1,000 with an 3770k and 16 GB ram. Other than the video card dying a few years back (where I just purchased a $50 replacement) and upgrading the ram around that same time to 32 gb (for equally cheap), it was fine until recently when I really started seeing mediocre performance in games and upgraded. And honestly, for regular use, it would still be very fast. You just couldn't have that kind of longevity with computers in the 90's and 2000's.
@eziux
@eziux 8 месяцев назад
I have almost the same experience (even video card dying few years back). Just finished building new PC few days ago mainly for gaming, and as you said, for other tasks it would have still been fine. Hopefully it will last another 10 years.

@mycelia_ow
@mycelia_ow 8 месяцев назад
@@TheCtibbs I doubt that honestly, I had to get rid of my i7 4790K and GTX 970, with ddr3 ram. The cpu isn't the problem it's everything else, especially since I wanted to use Windows 11 and an nvme ssd. Got a 12700k when it came out (which is now more than half price) and 3090 (same case) which would last me another 5 years but I'm probably gonna upgrade next year again. It was a night and day difference though. The 12700k is now cheaper than the 4790k I bought when it came out. The great thing about PC building is I can sell or keep my old parts. It's like chasing a high. I don't need to upgrade, but the ability to do so drives me to do things that require more power, making me want to upgrade every few years. Honestly though if you can afford it, I wouldn't keep using ddr3 and PCIe 3 in 2024, when ddr5 and PCIE 5 are a thing. Get something in the middle. I'm still on ddr4. Your platform is over 10 years old, it's best to upgrade at least every 5-7 years like consoles do.

That's how I would describe it. Very first i7s were 920 2.67ghz(20x133mhz) for around $300, 940 2.93ghz(22x133mhz) for between $550 and $600, and 965 3.2ghz(24x133mhz) for $999. A while later we got a new cpu stepping and models 930, 950 and 975 with similar prices compared to the originals but with a bump to the multiplier on each(21, 23 and 25 respectively).

In 2018, I still use my gaming PC bought for $1000 in 2009. The only considerable upgrade was last year, when I ditched my HD 5870 for a GTX 1060, added 2GB of RAM to get an 8GB total, changed the case and some coolers. It runs just about everything with fairly good perfomance at 1080p and will serve me at least more 2 or 3 years. The longevity of RAM, motherboards and CPUs has improved big time in this decade.
@PetrisonRocha
@PetrisonRocha 6 лет назад
My CPU is top tier for my MoBo (lga 1156), so I would need to upgrade the entire system. When I do that, I'll want to get a better GPU too (my 1060 model is the cheaper one and the 3GB VRAM is starting to show its age), so it will be basically a new computer. But I don't have bottomless pockets. And I can live with 30 fps gaming for some time if I need to (not the case atm, except in very specific titles).

That's gonna be tough, as you said it's gonna be a whole new PC. I'd get a used i7-4770k, you can get them for like 200$ in good condition and a brand new LGA1150 motherboard isn't more than 70$, they're DDR3 and the i7 is still a beast of a CPU. You could also go with AMD but Ryzens run on AM4 which is only with DDR4 and you'd need around 100$ for 8 gigs of fast DDR4 (Ryzens are super dependent on CPU speed).

On just a bad cpu, i'd recommend using your gpu to stream. OBS and xsplit utilities your cpu to stream, try using nvidia shadowplay to stream since it uses your gpu more than your cpu to stream, overall giving your system a better feel.

I'm still using the Asus tower I bought for $899 in early 2012. Still running Windows 7 too. It came with Intel Core i7 (3rd Gen) 3770 / 3.4 GHz, 2 1TB SATA drives (1HDD & 1 storage drive), 16GB of DDR3 SDRAM, NVIDIA GTX650 Ti with 2GB SDRAM, DVD RW, 16 in 1 card reader, 7.1 channel surround audio. I haven't upgraded it at all except to add a 5TB external drive (have an extensive movie and TV show collection). I've looked at some new desktops lately and I'm not all that impressed, although I am interested in getting a SSD for the speed it offers (or maybe a hybrid drive).

Computexpert lol the original comment stated that it was more powerful. As in, the GTX 970 AND the system it's in runs games BETTER than a PS4 Pro. And all research beyond articles titled, "New PS4 Pro Could Give PC Fanboys A Run for Their Money," shows that it's comparable to low (or at least lower)-tier cards. The Scorpio, on the other hand, might very well run like a 1070 or better like people are saying. I don't think so, but it also hasn't been released so who am I to pull shit out of my ass and present it as pure fact.

Great video! You sum up the differences in the advancement of technology in the 2000s versus the 2010s very well. The 2000s technology definitely had more innovation while the 2010s technology enabled people to do things faster. I also built my own PC In 2008, where it had a Core 2 Quad Q9300, 4GB of RAM, and a 9800 GTX. I later upgraded the RAM and GPU, and that rig lasted me until 2019 when it finally died. Pretty amazing that I was able to get over 11 years of use from that PC, and it still ran fine. If the timeline was shifted the other way, where you have a 1997 PC being used in 2008, that would not be feasible at all. You can even see this with mobile devices as well. In 2000, we had basic candy bar cellphones, but we ended the decade with smartphones in 2010. Ten years later in 2020, the basic fundamental technology of smartphones generally remained the same, but we just now have faster smartphones.

@DvdXploitr 7 лет назад
depending on what parts were used in your 2011 build, you could probably save a little money on a new build....if your PSU, hard drive(s) and case are still in good condition, you're looking at around $100-$200 savings...just would need a new GPU, CPU, Motherboard and RAM...
@alexperoff-investingessent8367
I'm also including the cost of Windows 7 operating system in the cost. But if I can reuse my power supply, case that would be good. I'd probably want to start with a fresh hard drive, both a solid state for booting and mechanical for storage. I haven't looked at new hard drives as the technology has gotten a lot better. Although thinking about the case, it looks like some of these new GPU's are crazy large. I'd need to do some measurements to see if I could use the same case.

Hi There, Before you retire that system buy an used Xeon X56xx chip and install it. I just upgraded my system from a i7 960, to a Xeon X5670 and "only" OC it to 3.6 (3,75 ht) so far. Its performing great. I did this after buying a GTX 1080 card (old GPU 2x6970 2GB) as the first component of a new system, but decided to try out the Xeon X56xx before i retired it. 6 cores with HT with no OC issues so far great results. The i7 9xx series are 130W cpu's on the 45nm layout. Xeon X56xx are 95W on the 32nm build. So my cpu @ 3,6 with all cores, ht and turbo on and 1,32V 150MHz bus and 24x multi is 100% stable. (Motherboard: Rampage III extreme, 12GB DDR3 @ (752MHz/ 2.4GHz). I'm really happy. Way less noise, and performs way over my expectations

Apart from the SSD and graphics card, which have been upgraded in 2015 and 2016 respectively, all of the parts in my computer were purchased in 2012. I am only now considering an upgrade of the base platform, not because of the performance which is still fine, but for small things like having more SATA3 ports, NVMe support, and better connectivity in general.

Title of video misleading! The computer isn't exactly from 2010, you mentioned it yourself that you upgraded your SSD, RAM and your GPU from a 460 to a 970. By making those upgrades you have changed 75% of your PC from 2010, so it isn't really the PC you used from 2010 anymore, rather the PC from 2015! We want to see how all the original parts of the PC from 2010 holds up in today's day and age in general use and current titles.

Agility 3 was a Vertex 3 with cheaper NAND, designed for budget. Given the issues with Sandforce drives over long-term, which I think has a lot to do with a lack of cache, the Agility 3 had a lot of issues. I was at OCZ in 2011, but would have been in the Compatibility Labs in those days. Ryan Petersen once shipped about 200K worth of failed DDR3 to Europe and then tried to screw the distributor on the return. OCZ was a shady operation.

Crazy that nowadays you can live every day with 10+ years old computer parts. It's really similar to what I did in the last 13 years. I Bought a setup in 2010 with the same gigabyte gtx 460 1gb, with a phenom ii 925, 4x1gb ram and a 770 board. I used it for almost 7 years. Then, the PSU died. Just for good measure I bought a new 600w cooler master PSU, 970 chip board, a new case and a new ssd, although I would only needed a new PSU, nothing else. Again it lasted for about another 5 years when I "upgraded" with an FX-8370 and 4x4 gigs of 2400Mhz RAM, and an RX580. Then the 970 MoBo's VRM died because it couldn't really handle the 125w cpu. Once again I upgraded with a new 650w 80+gold modular PSU, a 10 years old but new condition 990FX mobo, a huge cpu cooler, an NVME, a cm mb520 case, and a 6700XT Red Devil. A 10 years old ddr3 build, with a pathetic fx processor and an overkill bottlenecked GPU, but you know what? I really like CP2077. As soon as DDR5 becomes a bit cheaper I will directly upgrade from DDR3 to DDR5 after almost 15 years and I only need a board a cpu and some ram. And instead of buying all new stuff, I also took all the old 770/Phenom parts with the RX580, slapped 4x4gbs of ram and some RGB in it and now my gf happily plays on it every day.

I have almost the same setup as you do here, i am running a Gigabyte X58A with a i7 930 & 12gb of ram, i have had this PC live for 7 years now with only ever upgrading my graphics card from a gtx 460 to a 960 and soon one of the 1000s series, my computer has lasted longer then 80% of my friends and all of them are always telling me to upgrade from such old parts. This setup has been the most reliable setup i have ever had, also surviving - Win 7 - Win 8 - Win 8.1 and now Win 10. If you are in the market for building a computer, building one with these old parts would only cost you about $700 and the graphics card would be the highest price tag. Nice video keep up the grate work :)

I have that same motherboard with an i7 920 and a gtx 460. Only upgrades have been 6 to 12 gb of ram and then i got a gtx-670 then 2-3 years later another gtx-670 cheapish off of ebay to go SLI. Has worked really well until I got the bug to game over 60 FPS and 1080p. Just never had a need to upgrade the CPU. I never felt it bottlenecked anything.

Good old train video from 1987. I watched that video like a year or 2 ago. Nice throwback, I appreciate it, although I was born in 2003 and didn't start remembering before 2008.

First off, the i7-930 is a FIRST Gen Core i series. Sandy Bridge (2x00) were the second gen. Also, depending on what program you use for video encoding a fast NVidia GPU would speed rendering up a lot more than a faster/newer cpu would.

cee128d if u want to be technical it's more like 1b. The i7 920 came out 2 years earlier in 2008. Second iteration.
@cee128d
@cee128d 7 лет назад
If you want to be technical then it is FIRST Gen. That is what Intel states and they ought to know. The 930 uses the same Architecture as the 920, it's just higher clocked. Back then Intel would continue to release higher clock speed versions of the same processor, unlike what they tend to do today. You stated and then deleted the following. "Cmon you know it all, u know what he means" No I don't know it all (but obviously more than he or you do) and no I don't know what he meant, only what he stated.
@ashleysoklove98

cee128d haha I took it out cause I knew you'd have sand in your panties over it. U should have just kept quiet about it If you talk to non tech people which it seems like you don't, explaining second release of first generation, same architecture blah blah blah no one cares. No one cares. When you talk like that, regular people just flock to Apple.
@cee128d

Let 'em flock to Apple. No great loss. And it was you who brought up the second release of first gen, not me.

Hey Bernard! I just wanted to say that I was initially attracted to you because of your weight loss videos, but I am definitely loving your other content. It is all very high-quality, and I just really love your personality. You're just a funny, quirky, down-to-earth dude, and I really like it. I literally died when you mocked someone who was making fun of your "soft, estrogenic asian body." I will never forget that. It was hilarious. Don't worry so much about maintaining an audience based on niche content. You'll always have a loyal group of people who like you simply for you!

Coming from 2024, when driver support for the GTX cards has been ended and AMD is working on an APU more powerful than a brand new PC from 2017. Nvidia is still developing the RTX 5090 and Intel has burst into the GPU scene and has a very competitive upscaler that beats FSR. How time flies...

i built my PC at the end of 2010 also. paid 1300 bucks for it minus the OS and a monitor. basically the same computer that you have. i have only upgraded to a 1TB SSd and a GTX 980 2 years ago and thats it. i just got a 4k monitor and a occulus rift and it can still play games but it struggles. i finally upgraded to an I9 and a new motherboard/ddr4 but i kept everything else the same from 2010. the case and the power supply cords. youre completly right about the whole upgrading for something new. i would still have been able to use my old computer if i stayed in 1080p instead of upgrading to 4k. once i got something new i had to upgrade to keep up with it. this beast will last another 8 years unless they find out how to surpass the 7 ghz processors for a reasonable price. and the video cards.. lord i want a 2080 but they are so freaking $$$

hey man, great vid. eBay Xeon w3680 or w3690 CPUs, they aren't that expensive and are 6 core/12 thread and should work in your board. Also they are unlocked so you can OC them easily, and this should help your streaming massively (besides using a capture card and streaming with a second PC). Your PC is still a monster, ride it till the wheels fall off! maybe continue to utilize the PCI and PCI-E expansions to add more usb 3.0 and sata III ports too. Used 980tis are going for $250 or less as well! Rock on, man!

He already has a 1070, so a 980Ti is useless. Xeon would be good for streaming and doing it cheaply, but I guess one of those cheaper AMD 8 core processors would work as well if he wants a more massive upgrade (with a newer motherboard as well). Ryzen 1700 especially seems like a great choice, and it should be cheaper by next year when another bunch of Ryzen chips will come out.

Holy moly, I have that same motherboard! I even have a Maxtor IDE drive that looks exactly like yours. Whether you have Rev1 or 2 of that board, it is outrageously good. You seriously can't find a modern motherboard which features that many SATA connectors. Six is a lot by today's standards, and 10 is just unheard-of. The rarest feature might just be those combination USB2 and eSATA ports (the ones in yellow on the back I/O). I loved the fantastic transfer speed you could get on eSATA, but it was always a hassle finding a way to actually power an external drive for it. That, and it not being hot-swappable makes sense that it didn't stand the test of time. Additionally, having no internal header for USB3 front I/O is a real bummer. The most surprising realization was this board using DDR3 RAM. I misremembered it using DDR2. I completely forgot just how old that standard is by now, despite my main computer also still using DDR3, albeit with a great XMP in comparison. So many RAM slots is also a scarcity today. Only high-end boards seem to feature more than four. Those IDE and floppy connectors are very much appreciated, too. I happen to have small bunch of functional IDE and floppy drives, and it's great to still get some use out of them. Great video, and thank you for a pleasant blast from the past.

Nice video. Myself bought my pc summer 2011. An I7 2600 sandy bridge at 3,4Ghz, 4 cores and 8 threads. Today I have upgraded Gpu go a Vega64 Liq, 16Gig DDR3 1600Hz, 2 ssd for os and my game drives. I also bought a cpu watercooler hx105 and overclocked my sandybridge go 4,45Ghz. This computer run so smooth I have no reson to exchange it. Instead of buying a new pc I invested in an ultrawide 3440x1440p 100hz VA monitor with freesync. The first computer I composed myself and The best, longlasting computer I ever had. Its now 8 years old, stable and fast enough. :)

Wow I'm finding alot of similarities, to a point where it's kinda weird. - Mine was also built in 2010. - Was around the same price. - Also still is my main PC now. And the specs which are quite similar: - i7-950 - 6GB RAM - GTX460 (also Gigabye), replaced as well. - 60GB OCZ Vertex SSD, problematic too. - Cooler Master Haf-X Casing Played SC2 as well. Also is my most stable PC, OCZ SSD aside (they fixed it much later with firmware updates). Only Windows7 installed till now though. My next PC should be an Intel NUC. Thanks for this video!

My story is similar. I recently built a new gaming rig, replacing my 11 year old gaming rig from 2012. it had an Intel Core i7 3930k 6 Core, 32GB DDR 3 Ram, an Nvidia GTX 680 - 4 GB GPU, which i replaced with two GTX 970's in an SLI configuration, and then, eventually upgraded to an Radeon RX 6700 XT. 8 TB HDD storage, and a Corsair 80+ Platinum 1050 Watt PSU. As i mentioned before. Even though the upfront cost was expensive back in 2012, I made sure that my system was built to last. Finally it just got to the point were the CPU and Ram were bottlenecking my gaming experience, and the motherboard was also on it's last leg. IMO, the i7 3930k was an absolute monster CPU. Performance was rock solid, and I never had any stability issues during my time with that CPU. Initially it had an AIO water cooler, that ended up dying after a year or so. I just replaced it with an inexpensive air cooler and its been that way ever since. My new computer is my first complete AMD build, and it's been quite the learning experience for me.
