Otherwise, the anvil will break after falling blocks, and because the fall damage is not reset when you're getting pushed because explosion (falling anvil is an entity, so the behavior is similiar to a player or a mob, also it's the same entity as falling sand/gravel/concrete powder, so, most of the times they will have the same behavior ). Also, this can happen if a gravity block falls on a slab or non solid/full blocks (anvil will break things like torches, but will be broken if falls on things like slab or opened fence gate).

4:56, it DEFINITELY DOES work, I’ve tested it multiple times on bedrock and Java, it should work. The sharpness might be affecting it, or it could be a pretty low drop chance. It doesn’t happen EVERY time. It is more on the rare side.
