As Coach McGuire shared God always has a plan. Coach McGuire could have left Baylor after Aranda’s hiring but instead he humbled himself to stay for the sake of the Baylor players he had recruited and coached including his own Son. What’s really telling is how Baylor’s program’s downward slide started after Coach McGuire’s leaving Baylor to become Texas Tech HC. WreckEm!!!
As a Tech fan, I am really glad things worked out as they did. Joey is a great recruiter and after the Kliff Kingsbury and Matt Wells eras, a recruiter is EXACTLY what we needed in Lubbock. Dave Aranda has a great reputation as a defensive coordinator, but I do not see his quiet persona working well as a head coach. Sometimes you need a fiery motivational speaker to get the team charged up and ready to play. From what I have seen, Coach Aranda is just incapable of performing in that mode. Time will tell whether he is able to develop in this regard. Coach McGuire is a great motivator, but he suffered initially in his ability to make in-game decisions. This was especially true in his reliance on analytics to make his go - no go decisions on 4th down. To Coach McGuire's credit, he has taken a hard look at the worthiness of that analytics book and is starting to be more conservative in its use. I hope you Baylor fans can make it to Lubbock this weekend. The newly renovated South End Zone is beautiful and truly takes the game day experience to a whole new level! GUNS UP FROM RAIDER LAND!!!
You shouldn't be upset about letting Joey go. Yes, we love him in Lubbock, but he has other great coaches to support him, too. The fact is that you never know what will happen in the Big 12.... especially now with all the parity. I honestly believe LUCK is also a factor in our wins this year. Aranda is a very good coach. Just think about all the humility he had to retain his competitor on his staff! I'm happy Tech is having a good season, but keep in mind, we have NEVER been to a Big 12 championship. You have! Try to support your program through the ups and downs. Tech fans respect Baylor. Going to be a fun weekend! WRECK'EM!
I thought the players knew best when we were looking for a HC after Rhule deserted. I wanted Joey McGuire regardless of how much experience he didn't have coaching college football. Remember how good Briles did straight out of coaching High School football... If Aranda is terminated our Bears should consider hiring a highly successful High School coach. Preferably from the state of Texas and with a high powered passing attack.
Aranda was coming off a LSU season that was amazing, and Baylor would've been crazy to not hire Aranda. He'd been very successful as a DC everywhere he'd been. Joey had never even been a coordinator. Crazy how Bernard, and Pitre were so lowly rated. Bernard was like an .86, or .85 (mid 3*), and Pitre was composite .84 coming out of HS.
You gotta recruit. Joey had helped build a sugar bowl team and the players wanted him to be the choice. You hired a great coordinator, but he also hadn't proven he could be a head coach. Joey had won a string of titles at the Texas High School level. Aranda is gonna be a great coordinator again next year IMHO.
Utah is receiving votes in women’s basketball too, but yeah the big 12 is very competitive. Really the AP Poll for women’s basketball 8-12 can be in any order. The women do have a neutral site game with ucla which is very intriguing, but in general nonconference isn’t as tough as the men. The women do have a tournament in the Bahamas where they can potentially face two top 25 teams in Indiana and North Carolina.
You are giving Morton way too much credit. Tech is winning despite him, not because of him. Without the Abilene Christian and North Texas games he’s completing 58% of his passes and he has 5 TDs to 2 INTs in 4 games. That’s way below average. ESPN QBR is 47th in the country. Baylor needs to load the box and make him beat them. He’s good for about 3 balls that could be INTs per game. Baylor just needs to take advantage of them.
