Building on my last comment… If you look up a music video for a song called “Pretty Girl (The Way)” by a band called Sugarcult, it’s this pop-punk group who recorded footage from their visit to Trinidad and Tobago for the music video. That song and music video is the perfect epitomization of the sentimental feelings I have toward my youth which have influenced my worldview as an adult. The song title sounds inspired by Chinese Daoism, which speaks of “The Way of the Universe”, from the classic text the Tao Te Ching. The music video takes place on this beautiful tropical paradise in the Caribbean. Palm trees and waterfront coastlines, the music of the Caribbean like calypso, fused with ancient Chinese philosophy… A fusion of cultures and ideas into something distinct and different. Some speculate that my life story, or people linked to me or my past, is the inspiration for all of Sugarcult’s music, lyrics, and song titles, if you believe in things like uninvented future technology like time-travel influencing our past. I have no opinion as to the validity of this theory.

I am particularly nostalgic for a time period during my childhood, before my 13th birthday, when my elementary school best friend was a very interesting mixed race dude who was half-Hong Kong Chinese and half-Trinidad & Tobago Caribbean. In other words, half-black and half-Asian. I really miss hanging out with him and his family. As a result of this childhood nostalgia, I have a strange affinity for East Asian culture as well as Caribbean culture. Anything such as Hong Kong cuisine or Caribbean steel drums reminds me of this childhood friend of mine. I think I miss this guy and feeling like an adopted member of his family because it was before I met my half-brother Carl, who was such a destructive influence on my family and social network of friends. Sometimes I fantasize about having stabbed this asshole in the neck the moment I met him, had he just bled out when I was like 13-years old, it would saved me a lifetime of trouble afterwards.
