It's time for another underwater video! This time we started off by looking at how the pike react to a dead bait goldfish. Then we moved on to looking at how a bite alarm and drop back indicator react to the pike picking up the bait and putting that footage side by side. It makes for some real interesting viewing, so I hope you enjoy!

Hello from Northern Ontario. I’m enjoying an early morning coffee and watching your pike video. My parents lived for a short time in England. They left and moved to a small town called Wawa. Pike was king in the area and we grew up fishing and eating pike. I don’t think you can beat a good sized bobber/ float to fish for pike. The bite is quickly signaled by the float and doesn’t seem to bother the pike. There is also much less hardware attached to the line. A wire leader with a single or treble hook and a float. Also less you have to carry to your spots. One year an American angler graciously showed me the proper way to fillet and debone a pike in just a few steps after I was butchering it with the idiotic 5 cut technique. It was fast easy and left the fillet boneless! Our family enjoyed fresh fried pike suppers and it was staple for us in those days. Pike are very cooperative unlike many other fish. I still to day at 69 fish for pike with a red and white bobber! Great show. Oh and I make my own leaders using nylon coated steel wire that I twist and melt so there is less hardware the pike can see. I add a single hook using a uni knot that allows me to slide the hook up and down the wire leader to adjust for different size bait. It works awesome! Once again an American pike angler showed me the technique. Here’s a video we made showing how to make the leader. instagram.com/reel/C3-brCSL-lv/?igsh=dXd1ejNhZHR6MDc=

@@joaquimioakim229 Zander are stunning to eat. Roach are like cotton wool with bones. Perch are delicious too, most predators are tasty. I've tried carp but its earthy. Traditionally we used to eat a lot of carp in the UK. Most people here, anglers in particular turn their noses up at eating coarse fish. They'd rather eat a chicken raised in a factory coated in chemicals and fried. Us brits now prefer to catch a fish, snog it, take a pic,and chuck it back.

This absolute gold mate! Chris, you're a beast my man 😁 40 years of assumptions, discussions and bro science about weight for deadbaiting, the big goldfish question -they might be better underneath a little bubble float as 3-5" live baits, apparently 🤷🏻‍♂️😬, but the visual data you provide for bite indication is the biggest thing for me. Pick your rod out the rests at the slightest indication folks. No, not every indication will result in a fish on the bank, but it will elimate most deep hooking and will ultimately put more fish on the bank. Share this with your pike fishing mates ffs, they'll thank you for it!

Great video as always mate. Can't tell you how much I appreciate the time and effort that goes into filming underwater. My biggest takeaway from this video is the important is using ledger stems with a heavy lead. Getting that solid hold in the bottom with a big lead and the line popped up with a 360 swivel ring with a ledger stem to keep it away from snags and allowing for completely line freedom.

Love your videos and sheer enthusiasm for all types of fishing. A couple of comments on the set-up in terms of bite indication. Ideally the drop off should be set up directly under the reel spool so that the tension is such that even a short pull on the line will see the indicator drop off or drop back if the lead comes towards the rod. The swaying on the indicator that is seen in the footage is due to the position of the drop off clip on the bank stick, you might have put it where you did as the clip was too big for the extending part of the bankstick, and I would generally be on the rod instantly to stop a deep hooked fish if I saw this movement. Strangely enough you only generally see this when using braid as the stretch in mono means that this is not seen and can result in a deep hooked fish. In terms of the lead size I tend to think that heavier is better as the line can pull through the run ring without the lead moving and adding resistance, assuming that the drop off releases easily and quickly. However, in terms of pike being sensitive to resistance I have found in my experience that they will quite happily drag a big lead, it's a resistance change that is likely to make them drop the bait. When I say a resistance change I mean something like the drop off not releasing, the line snagging or fishing with a close bail arm etc. Keep up the great work.

Just wondering if the 'grabbing and letting go' is to trigger a reaction, or that it's actually tasting similar to the gasping they sometimes do close the bait. Could they be deterred by the 'taste' of the tackle or our handling of the bait?

I just got given a spool of 20lb nylon line that's 500meters and 0.148mm , I was just wondering what is it used for because it would literally take miles to fill a spool so is it like load up mainly normal mono and then add a load for fishing for course species or is it more as just a fine leader??? I've never used it and I couldn't really find out much about micro fine super strong line.

Great video Chris. You have demonstrated why deep hooking can be a problem. The fish does not always move off immediately. Have you read anything by Jens Bursell? He has developed 'Release rigs' for lures and dead baits to improve hook ups and reduce deep hooking. I have been looking at beach casting rigs lately and they too have a deep hooking problem with some species. Their answer is the 'dongle rig' which is a sort hair rig system for predatory fish. I wonder if a dongle rig style set up would work for Pike too. I suppose the 'kebab rig' is the nearest freshwater equivalent.

I would never free line a bait as you just can't tighten up properly for bite indication purposes. One thing that I have found effective, and as close to freelining as you can get, is to add 3 or 4 3SSG shot directly on the trace say 4 inches (10cm) behind the bait. This gives you enough weight to tighten up to for proper bite indication.
