I CAN'T Believe I Tried THIS with My Brand NEW TOYOTA TACOMA!

In todays video we take my 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road out to a giant hill to test some off road features. We compared 2 wheel drive VS 4 High and low along with crawl control. To keep it fair the tests were done under about 5mph and each test I got farther up the hill. Only two modes made it, 4 low with locking rear and crawl control. This is such a capable vehicle in the stock form, can't wait for lift and tires!

I have a 2017 TRD Off Road. I also have that book Arizona Backroads and 4 Wheel Drive Trails. I've driven several of the moderate trails listed in the book. One of them was the Outlaw Trail, which seemed like a high moderate. At the end of the trail I realized the Tacoma had been in 2 wheel drive the whole time, and I had no problems on the trail...Amazing vehicles...

Surprised no one has said this. Offroading really depends on the drivers control and inputs. The moment he gave it more gas or momentum it didn't have any issue as traction is controlled. Good example is crawl control which just means the computer is the experienced "driver" in that scenario. Just my 2 cents.

Amanda eagle- 4 hi in a tacoma is for snow on road or mud on a well beaten path at higher speeds. 4 low is for climbing and crawling where max torque is needed. You could put a lot of stress on the gear box by using 4 hi that way
@Community-Action
@Community-Action 6 лет назад
Lokey- crawl control is the automatic transmissions attempt at being able to "ride the clutch" in a manual transmission truck. Automatics have always been limited in that once a tire spins when traction is needed it will continue to spin until you push the brake. Riding the clutch let's you find the sweat spot between too much traction and not enough.

Thanks guys for the video. Last year I bought a "peanut butter" Tacoma EX Cab, one the I could afford at $31K. I need it to last the rest of my driving days so currently it only has 4600 + miles. I would never risk "Sandee" in this way, but it's good to know what she's capable of when push-comes-to-shove! Just for fun, my other 4X4 is "Vanessa" ,a good ol' '89 Toyota LE van. When I first bought it 20 years ago I tried it on a hill close to that steep, but my yellow streak started to show about half way and I eased he back down. Keith L.

Great examples. I am not a big fan of using the crawl control for off road. The reason why is because I want to drive my vehicle...not let the vehicle drive itself. Though I wouldn't mind having it as a last ditch go to if you are really stuck though because I have seen some amazing videos of it getting tacos out jams. Thanks for posting!

Tacoma TRD Sport manual 2017 here. This means I don't have the rear lock (only the auto-LSD) nor the A-Trac system - which appears to be the same system behind automatic climb control. This helps a lot in complex offroad scenarios, and IMHO is the most significant feature behind the TRD Offroad banner. Anyhow, I'm pretty sure 4LO alone without rear lock would also made its way up if taken a little faster.

@Tactical_Turtle
@Tactical_Turtle 6 лет назад
I used to have a 2011 Tundra SR5 and now own a 2017 TRD Off-Road Taco, I can tell you this thing is leaps and bounds ahead of that thing except in the one very obvious department, power. The Tacoma has it, especially if you press the ECT-PWR button, but the Tundra was such a overly responsive beast that I have come to abhor that lack in ponies. However supposedly several companies are working on supercharger kits as we speak for the 3rd gens so fingers crossed.
@user-tb7rn1il3q
@user-tb7rn1il3q 6 лет назад
The current Tacoma 2GR-FKS V6 is a stop gap until the new Dynamic Force V6/10 speed auto comes out. It pulls hard if you rev it. The 6 speed auto in the Taco is geared tall so the combo is a little lacking. The Tundra and 4 Runner will be also be getting new Dynamic Force powertrains. The 4 Runner with the old 4.0 V6 and 5 speed auto runs much better than the new Tacoma with only a minor penalty in mpg.
