I'm 63 years old, have lived all over the country, and still have (PROUDLY) hanging on the wall my first guitar, a Japanese-made Ventura 335-type guitar. My parents bought it for me when I was 12 (1972), and I hated it, cause all my friends had strats and teles and solid body guitars. Today I love that we've both survived the journey, so far✌

My first guitar actually ended up at a local music store and my wife bought for me for Christmas. It was a crappy Harmony I purchased through Fingerhut. In high school I had given it to a friend after I purchased a new guitar and then never saw it again. Then over 20 years later I see it in the music sites Facebook and told my wife about it and unwrapped it in Christmas that year. It was a cool experience.

Start on whatever guitar you want! That being said, I would pick acoustic to start on because electric is easier to play. It's the same as learning to drive with a manual transmission. If you can drive a manual, you can drive an automatic. If you learn to drive an automatic and at some point need to drive a manual, it's going to be so difficult! Acoustic vs electric isn't quite that extreme but I would always say to start on acoustic. That's just my opinion though. Whatever you do, don't give up!

I was still quite young and know nothing about music theory and scales and all that stuff so i assumed it was a regular guitar but much smaller instead of having a different tuning. It got given away by my dad during the pandemic to a low income family, but i dont really care since i already had a yamaha cg102 from 1 or 2 years before the pandemic plus its helping the poor lol

Growing up I always used to fall back on rap music r&b.. my uncle who passed away many years ago always pushed me to listen to older rock, Ozzy Pink Floyd Zeppelin. And I never got into it. After his passing I started to listen to as much rock as possible old-new. Then finally, just year ago, I picked up a guitar and have been learning everyday. Wish I would have listened to my uncle way back then when he was here. Learning something related with guitars is a part of my everyday routine. If it wasn’t for my uncle I probably wouldn’t even of ever picked up a guitar.

My condolences on your loss. Maybe your uncle had a hand in your reconnecting with your first guitar. I still have my first guitar; a right handed, late 80's/early 90's Profile guitar from Sears. Found out with that guitar, I am actually a left handed player. So turned the nut around and restrung it to match. One day it was stolen from me and about 2 weeks later, it turned up in the local pawn shop. Since there aren't a lot of no name guitars strung upside down in this town, the shop owner (reluctantly) allowed me to take it, free of charge (I did offer to pay at least something for it, for his troubles).

Sorry for your loss. It’s great to have had a cool uncle to inform your playing. I got rid of my first THREE guitars when I was a starving student. I don’t regret two of them, but one was a lawsuit era 70s El Degas Les Paul, and I regretted losing that one. Thankfully, a few years later I found an almost identical one for a very good price, upgraded the pickups, and I’ve had it for about 25 years now. I learned my lesson and never got rid of another one after those first three. I lend guitars out regularly to friends and family, sometimes for years, but I always get them back.

My first guitar is sitting in my parent's closet, Dad says it will never leave unless I'm the one taking it with me. Crazy how those very first guitars hold so much emotion in them all these years later, more than we would ever know, right? RIP Uncle Tim. That jam with your cousin at the end brought a tear to my eye and raised the hairs on my arms - as much for the overtones of family, a tribute to Tim and passing/repassing of the baton - as it was for the music itself. I still have my first guitar - sat forgotten and unloved in a cupboard for a few decades. During the unfortunate circumstances of the past few years with lockdowns etc - I got it out, completely refurbished it and gave it a new paint job. Brings a smile to my face to look at it on the wall and compels me to pick it up.

I found my first guitar in my parents closet a few years ago. It was a red strat copy that i bought myself when i was 13, think it was 1997. The neck was broken and pickups had rusted because it had been in a garage for many years but the white plastic details had aged beautifully creamy 😁 So i bought some Fender pickups, new electronics, a rosewood fretboard neck and fixed some details. Now it's my number one guitar 👍

What matters is the body and the exact guitar loool. Feels nostalgic when you get it. My first guitar is a $150 handmade lespaul. Fast forward everything with it sucks. Hardwares all tarnished and green, action is 5mm high, pots are all not working/scratchy and the only thing that works is the pickup. Change the hardware and machine heads to gotoh, replace the pickups with Duncans, Set it up then plays good and feels good again. Fortunately it is a bolt on les paul so i can change the neck if i want to.

Started my Music/Guitar journey in 2014 with a simple Fender Bass, eventually moved on to 6 Strings about a year later, my 2nd ever bass is a WarWick Corvette $$ (Double Buck) 5 String, that I picked up second hand for about $500. My first serious 6 string is an LTD M100-FM, keep in mind I was a kid when I was getting these guitars so I had no serious budget, but I've had all of my OG Guitars since I've bought them, and my Fender Bass and M100-FM are two Guitars I refuse to let go, I still have my WarWick but it needs some serious maintenance and just a general overhaul of its original electronics and Pickups, my M100-FM is also due for Electronics work and that will be the first guitar to get its work done to it. I'll never forget as a new guitar player, getting a Floyd Rose as a relatively new 6 String player, the egregious process of just learning what there is to know not only about guitar technical basics, but also the maintenance basics of a Floyd Rose without having any knowledge of how they really worked, at first it was a massive undertaking because it seemed so daunting to set it up or even restring it, but not much later I had the hang of it and that M100-FM had thousands of hours put on it in the span of 7 years, and still has hundreds of hours put on it every year. My most recent guitar was a 1994 (or '96 I can't remember exactly, but it was within the first couple of years of Mexi Strat Production models) Mexican Stratocaster, I can't afford American Strats so I went with the Mexi and my god did she sing, unfortunately due to personal and familial issues I had to get rid of it and it is something I will always regret having to do and it put a huge hole in my heart because that Guitar was a gift to me. Regardless, the first Guitar, or for me the first couple, are the guitars that should never be sold and should always be kept. Even if they aren't played anymore, because once you fall in love with music and guitars you will always get a sense of nostalgia and appreciation every time you look at them. My first bass is far out of working order (Missing bridge pieces, bad electronics/pickups, ect) but I plan to do a massive overhaul to it and bring it up to High End Fender Bass standards in the future, even though I barely, if ever really play Bass anymore, after that, since it will likely get little play time, I'm going to buy a big wall-mounted black box to put it into and hang it up in my room, along with my other guitars on the wall. I think the main takeaway here is that regardless of how 'cheap' some of our first guitars are, the sentimental value is astronomically high, the struggle, frustration, and eventual gratification that you get from learning and, frankly, beating on those first few instruments is something you will never forget once you become a seasoned Guitarist.

My nephew has my first acoustic, it was a crappy rouge but it made my fingers strong.. hopefully he'll really learn to play it one day and I can inspire him the way your uncle inspired you... music has a beautiful way of connecting us in ways words never could!

All firsts Lol I still have three bass and five electric guitars which are going nowhere because they are my babies! Lets not forget two drum sets! For the Animal in me after guitar practice. So sorry for your loss, just want to say thanks for staying strong and continuing to inspire guitarists all around the world! I still have my first guitar (obviously, I've only been playing for 4 years). It's a 2004 Affinity Strat that was trash picked, it has the big CBS style headstock (which I actually like) and the neck is unusually narrow. I'm left handed so we did a Jimi Hendrix on it and also swapped the pickups out for some cheap eBay Alnico-V ones. It is much better now and plays pretty good, it feels very sure footed and produces the same feeling as an old crummy car that you just can't get enough of now that you've fixed a major issue.

Tyler, Probably my favorite video of yours and I've seen most of them. Uncle Tim looks like he might have played some football in his life. I bet the top hat was good rehab for that zipper scar on his left knee. Infectious smile and whatever drink in his hand at the end is just a plain ole awesome pic. I hope you have that on a wall somewhere. I bet he was a fun Uncle. RIP-UNCLE TIM!

Such a cool video and story to go with it! Loved the jam at the end. Wish I could give it 2 thumbs up 😁👍👍I still have my first. 1983 Conn C-Series LP copy. Looks eerily similar to the Cantrell Wino Custom 😎. God bless and rock on 🎸
