Auto-Tune is murder by daylight. It kills the soul of the singer, and zero emotion is transferred.
@zachhiggins1668
@zachhiggins1668 2 дня назад
I feel like that's true of all recorded singing though. No matter how good the record or sound system a recorded voice always sounds hollow and dead compared to a live voice. You can sing extremely low volume and still be heard rooms away in a house but low volume recorded music doesn't travel near as far. It's like dead sound compared to vocal cords direct to ear
@LogiForce86
@LogiForce86 2 дня назад
@zachhiggins1668 Disagree. Buy the Sony Pulse Elite headset. The planar drivers in it are leaps ahead of any dynamic driver large or small in terms of membrane control. Dynamic drivers are cones in a springy rubber ring. The rubber has a certain resistance that slows down the driver response over the entire frequency range, and it is only controlled by a single sided magnet. Planar drivers don't have this shortcoming. The membrane is a very sheet of plastic (or maybe something similar) with a coil on it as thin as leaf gold, which is sandwhiched by very strong magnets on both sides of opposing polarity. Due to this,the response of the driver is extremely fast through the entire frequency range. This means a driver has close to non after vibration (as in the lingering vibration or time it takes thereof between the actual sound being played and the driver coming to a standstil). Which in turn removes the muddied sound you can get with dynamic drivers and improves distinction of sounds through the entire frequency range. In short, if you listen to a voice with planar drivers, you can get an accurate reproduction. However, this also depends on the quality of the recording and microphone used. Planars also painfully shows a bad audio recording, mix, and master. Even old analog tape masters show a lot of tape his. However, I can also hear the stool of a singer squeek, them rubbing their clothes, and so on. It all depends on the recording, but planar shows all and reproduces properly in my opinion.

The big question is WHY? Why did an engineer or producer feel it was even necessary? It’s as if they just think it’s something you are automatically supposed to do these days for whatever reason. It has gone beyond even trying to just make corrections to a couple notes that might need fixing. There was a recent release from a great young singer that has obviously been altered by some type of software (This has happened on her other recent releases too) Instead of hearing her beautiful natural voice, you hear an almost electronic sounding voice which is a real shame. In comments for the video some fans were complaining about the Autotuning of her voice, how it took away the unique texture and details of her natural voice. The producer actually responded saying that he didn’t use autotune, he used Melodyne. To me the point was why he felt it was necessary in the first place not what specific software was used. , what’s the difference of which software was used, its as if it’s something they automatically do and he totally missed the point of the comments. It’s one thing to use it if you actually want the talk box effect or the sound of Cher’s Believe.. The Beatles actually did some voice altering tricks on some songs such as on Tomorrow Never Knows but that’s because they wanted a particular sound on the song. But otherwise, what’s the reasoning behind using these softwares. Just because it exists? It’s gotten so engrained in the music industry that it’s just done but no one questions it. The natural sound of real standout voicing is going to be lost. Everyone will have an android voice

Actually there is (possibly) a very good reason why he felt it was important to make sure people knew which vox changing program he used .......... that is, maybe he is sponsored by Melodyne! or maybe I am just older and more cynical than you. 😉 ....... and yes I hate the ubiquitous use of those programs too. It is as if those producers were not around when every 'tapped in' drum machine pattern had the life quantised out of it, and so did not learn the lessions.

Yeah, that album was autotuned (not at the show, but in post production- and done poorly). When I first heard the clips online (before I purchased the album) I bitched about it too. When you hear it online, it's MUCH more noticeable than when you hear the CD- at least to me. Paul has been having voice issues over the past decade, maybe a bit longer. I seem to remember him getting sick in Japan, cutting a few dates, and then ever since, I've noticed he's had a really rough time of it. Maybe it was a vocal cord surgery gone wrong- Paul's pretty secretive about his voice. I'm a HUGE Paul fan, but he's definitely got some issues going. I have seen Paul live when he comes to my state since 1976. The last tour, due to the state of his voice, I skipped. I just don't want to remember him like that. Still love him and I sure hope he can pull it together. And hey, he's now 82, so for most singers, there're gonna be issues. I don't think of Paul as most people, I think of him as God. ;)

@gatesurfer
@gatesurfer 8 дней назад
The thing is, a “singer with bad pipes” doesn’t really exist. There are “people with bad pipes who sing,” but that person would not be considered a singer. I think what Phil is pointing out in these videos is that the vast majority of people you hear on the radio or a commercial recording are, in fact, pretty good singers. They’re mostly on pitch and sound pretty decent on their own. But now the “sound engineers” and “producers” have taken over, and in order to prove their importance, they’re tweaking everything and anything they can, even when it’s not necessary. And they’re doing it in a wholly unnatural and inappropriate way, through visual reference to a bunch of lines on a screen, rather than with their ears and their sense of musical expression. I would really like to question the sound engineer who did this song in particular. What techniques did they use? What sound were they hoping to create? Are they actually happy with the result? It sounds so unnatural this way. And the fact that it’s such a famous song by such a famous group and such a distinctive voice just makes the travesty of it that much greater.

there's a difference between being open to new tech, as this quote suggests, and what we see in this video. The original vocal certainly isn't one that can can be described as 'not that good'. Also, 'Autotune' is used as a verb to describe any kind of pitch correction. There's no way that someone like Paul literally means, run it through autotune on 'auto' mode with no intervention from a human. This is an 'after the fact' use of autotune so this is just laziness and certainly not something done by an industry professional. If it is, they should be ashamed of themselves, they might be forgiven if it was the year 2000, but it isn't.
