About boxes - my son sent me a meme he'd seen which said [paraphrased] - You know you're adulting when you debate tossing a box you don't need but think, yeah, but it's a really good box! - LOL!
This was refreshingly realistic and SUPER inspiring! My garage is my household source of anxiety! I feel like we take on step forward and two steps back out there...
Wait! I thought garages were for cars? lol! I feel you girlfriend! I wonder WHY? do we spend money on and accumulate so much CRAP in our lives? I too have an amazon box / recycleables pile that I NEED to take to my recycle station. I only save boxes for a couple of months - just long enough to make sure the product works and I don't need to return it to the store. If you shove a box up into the rafters, imagine a year or 2 or 5 from now getting that box down. Hmmm....what's been living in there? spiders? mice? so much dust you'll need an asthma treatment to breathe? Nope! Time to recycle those bad boys! Well done! You did a fantastic job cleaning that garage! It looks great!
Your husband brought you a coffee! I think he needs to take you on a nice weekend break after all this garage work and 3 kids to look after, you deserve it!! Oh and good old dad helped out, bless him...
My parents' is probably 5-8x worse than hers: it's so full, there's literally only just barely enough space to step sideways - yes, sideways - from the house garage door to the big garage door, and that's only about 6-8 ft. distance. In order to go anywhere else in the garage, the big door has to be open and you have to hop over mounds 2-3 ft. high and between stacks of things 7+ ft. high. We haven't been able to park a vehicle in that 2-car garage for at least 15 years, and we only moved there 23 years ago. I long for the day when parking all our vehicles on our property (i.e. driveway and garage - not allowed to park on the street overnight where they live) won't be a constant moving dance of pickup, prius, minivan, and small SUV. I will definitely be sending this entire playlist to my dad - he'll appreciate it. My garage, on the other hand, only has my bike, spare truck wheels (currently the winter ones, since the summer ones are on it), and a couple bags of things that came out of my truck bed a few months... oh gosh, I just realized it's already been 5 months... ago so that I would have room to haul stuff when I helped some friends move at the end of May (unfortunately, the two really big things in those bags need to hang/be laid out to dry because they're soaked, and I don't know whether the weather where I live will be conducive for that any time soon - maybe tomorrow, when it'll be super windy but almost 70? hope so). Hopefully I can get that stuff taken care of soon. Everything else in the garage belongs either to my landlord, or the guys I share the garage with who live in the house that attaches to the other side of the garage (not quite like a duplex, but sort of), and I don't think very much of it actually belongs to them - a few bikes, and maybe a small handful of other things; pretty sure everything else belongs to the landlord. I'm waiting for the day that "my" side of the garage gets cleared out so that they guys don't have to hop over piles of stuff just to get my wheels out when I need to get them switched (they stay in a stack on the floor near the big garage door, but a lot of stuff got piled around them, so they're not easy to get at - thankfully, all the guys are at least a good head taller than me, if not more, and significantly stronger, and all 5 of us are either alums and/or employed by the college we went to, so they're happy to do it for me, making what would be a 40-45 minute exhausting job by myself (the wheels are the full wheel - tire, rim, and air to pressure, so probably 80ish lbs each, if not more) take maybe 5 minutes with almost zero effort from me and only a little effort from them, since there're enough of them helping me each time that they only ever have to do one or two wheels apiece).
We just converted one half of our two car garage into a room for an office. That has now inspired the next project of drywalling the rest of the garage so we can create a faux mud room wall. The process of decluttering and being able to park a car in it has been amazing. It’s so hard with young kids to get it done, but the end result is so satisfying.
Wow that sounds AMAZING! Yes once everything fits and it’s not super crowded it is an incredible feeling! I would love to see photos on IG - @sarahwlg!
I am so glad I don't have a garage or basement... They really are just dumping grounds for stuff 😭. My husband wanted that we buy a house with both.. I said no... Thank God! He would have filled them with crap. I have a carport... Just for my car. A shed for garden tools and bikes, scooters, skate boards My attic just has suitcases, camping gear, snorkeling/diving gear, skiing gear, and Christmas decorations. That's it...easy to keep clean and tidy. Oh and flat pack moving boxes (we move relatively often).
Thank you for making this video. It is very inspiring. Congratulations on a job well done. Your garage looks amazing now and I’m sure a huge weight has been lifted. I would love to get into our garage and do the same, but I can only focus on my stuff, which I’ve been doing over the years and have it contained to some sports gear and holiday decorations, that we do use.
Yes I am so thankful because I could NEVER have done this with my kids around. I needed total focus and nobody getting into everything I was making progress on. Awesome to be part of this with you as well!
Your garage is the size of my entire house. And I could almost park my car in your dad's trailer! 🇬🇧 I feel your pain however. Currently doing my own de-clutter of certain boxes which have been packed away for almost 20 years... it's like wading through treacle and I'm mad at myself for not doing it sooner but the bonfire at the end will be sooooooo good.
1. So envious of your garage space!! Great work!!! 2. My husband has a collection of glasses that he never uses because he wants to keep them pristine. So they sit in their original boxes in a cabinet in our kitchen. It drives me crazy that he doesn't even use them.
Oh man I would feel the same way! My husband and had a shelf of Funko pops in the bedroom closet. I’m not a collector like that but I’m trying to honor his wishes! But the nasty I cleaned drink cans that never got looked at I had to persuade to get rid of
It's so disgusting how selfish wives can be, no wonder divorce rates are so high. If someone enjoys something let them. The woman in this video is getting a divorce because instead of letting her husband have less than a foot of counter space, she threw a tantrum. Good on him for leaving.
I just moved after 42 years in one house. I had boxes etc from stuff we hadn’t had for 10-12 years. Attic, not garage, which is worse because it was out of sight out of mind. 🥺🥺🥺
Go girl go!!!!📣 your not the only one dealing with a garage mess!! Way to go! You dud it and by yourself, but sometimes that's how we mom's prefer it 😂
I totally would’ve preferred the help but we had waited about 5+ months to get a time to work out where we were both home and the kids could be gone and it just never came!
We are slowly as we have time here and there picking away at our garage declutter. We have some boxes from when we moved that need to be gone through 😳 and a dead pool...our plan is to have it done by end of November! With sports and dance stuff on weekends amongst other things we can't do it in one day. Great work!!!!!
Great job! Your always saying you don’t have a lot of storage. Girl you have a tone :) we are family of 6 living in 1800sq and we have homeschooled for 6 years. New home like ours don’t have the amazing areas you have down stairs.I’m alway getting overwhelmed by stuff but having more Storage would not help it’s me getting rid of stuff. 3 of my kids ride dirt bikes with their dad and that comes with a lot we have two hunters in the house witch comes with sooo much. You got this . Less is always more.
My storage room is about 5 feet by 7 feet so by most standards it’s tiny but I get what you mean. I can’t store much I care about out in the garage because of pests and super harsh winter temps. But we are thankful for what we have. Many in our area have a whole unfinished basement, huge room, attic, etc. that we just don’t have for out of season stuff so I try to store as little as possible.
Well done! Looks so good! You should feel very accomplished. Besides our closets, our garage is our only storage space. It's a two car, so we park our van in it, and half of it is storage and outdoor things (kids' outdoor toys, lawn stuff, etc). It takes work to maintain it, and it certainly isn't pinterest worthy, but it's functional.
You did a great job with your garage!! Sometimes I wish I had a garage. Sometimes I am glad I don't. I hope you rewarded yourself with a nice treat for all your hard work!!
every time i get overwhelmed cleaning i jokingly say lets burn the house down lol. my basement looks like your garage. its unfinished and i dont have a garage. hello from a Minnesotan!
Wow! Your effort in cleaning out this garage is AMAZING! I am an old geezer who believes that the garage is a guy's responsibility..... you gave a great excuse about how hard he is working, but really.... you are fixing a lot of his mess. So... I suggest he watch this video, and then give you a spa retreat and also a great dinner out for this. Thank you for sharing.
He definitely appreciated it! It wasn’t like he was sitting around doing nothing - the timing for us to have kids gone and BOTH of us home was so difficult we tried for months and it never happened.
You did a amazing job cleaning your garage by yourself girl, I can understand the problem of where to start. I’m having the same issue with our basement. I have one room 95% emptied and cleaned. I have one shelf to tackle and then it will be done. It can be so overwhelming but you got it girl!
Ok going to jump in. Cardboard boxes and recycle stuff: Hubby knows that empty boxes drives me batty so he breaks them down into a size that will fit into our bins. Our city only picks up the recycle bin twice a month so we decided to purchase a second bin for recycling. It makes a huge difference in getting those items out of my house an actually recycled. The only time we really have a build up is the holidays when I save "good" Amazon boxes for wrapping gifts - then after Christmas it just takes a few weeks to fit all of those saved boxes into the bins for pickup. Keep up the good work. It is not easy but so worth it.
Wow, you did an amazing job. It looks like you have 2 identical metal shelving units (grey). Did you know you can take 1 shelf from each and connect them together giving you 1 large shelving unit? The center shelves could be far enough off the floor to slide riding toys, or snowblower under. This will also give you more room on a shelf to store your christmas tree and other decorations. I'd also suggest hanging up the step ladders and saw horses.
Yep lol I keep all of the boxes that are unique to an item we own. Like a playstation box - It has all of the padded/packaging inside and I know that it's safe during a move. Definitely KEEP!
I will be sending this, and the entire playlist, to my dad - the garage is his domain, but he needs motivation to get it done, but he really needs to to do it, because it's probably 5-10x worse than yours. Hopefully, my parents will work on decluttering the spaces that will be getting remodeled this winter, then while the house is torn apart, they can declutter the garage. We'll see.
I just watched a garage organization and declutter on The Suitcase Diet channel. Seemed like a good way to deal with a LOT of stuff, especially china and collectibles. Hope this helps!
I think you may need to re-title this video "Heroic Garage Declutter..." What a huge effort, and you did such an amazing job!! Brava! I'm inspired to tackle my own garage this weekend.
Wow, that was a lot of hard work! Well done. It's so easy to let things pile up in garages when you're busy but I bet this has made a huge difference in your stress level. And so good to get done before the weather changes so you're ready for winter. Also, I kind of hate to be *that person* in the comments but your tunic dress is SO cute, exactly what I need. Do you mind sharing the brand/where you got it from?
I would love to be able to declutter the garage when my husband was gone. I've had free reign over decluttering the entre house, but the garage is his domain.
If you want to save empty boxes then fold them up so they take up way less room. Gald that I am not the only one who is overwhelmed… you did a great job. Your husband owes you a nice dinner 😉
Thank you so much for your honest reactions on this video ‘. Made my day I am so grateful for the honest reaction. I have a autoimmune disease and I’m on oxygen and I get really tired etc. I’m trying to unpack after moving and I was feeling bad like why do all those people on RU-vid love cleaning. I’m unpacking and all that like oh my God I’m so overwhelmed but your video made everything go into perspective.
I’m late to the video and to comment BUT I’m a military spouse and I have all our TV boxes, small appliance boxes and others. 😬. Takes up a lot of space so I totally understand. We also have a detached garage with a work out gym so watching your video is really hitting hard today cause I desperately need to clean it out and get ready for winter as well. 😳😬🤦♀️
