Oman Episode 3 - How I spent my New years 2016
In my last Episode I had ridden from Muscat into Wadi Bani Auf. Because of the incredible tough terrain and the bike being too big for me, I dropped it in the middle of a huge ascent up a super steep road , with deep sand and hair pin turns. In This episode I try to find help to pick up my bike. I tried to pick it up myself, but with the hill and lack of traction, I wasn't able to. I panicked and ran for help. I get to experience the kindness of many strangers and encouraged by the help that I get from these people. I'm happy that I get to share these beautiful encounters with people. To reinstate your faith in humanity. I'm a solo female traveler, and I was showered with generosity from these kind Muslim people. Who wanted nothing but to help me and make sure that I was okay. This is the world we live in, and it makes me so happy that I can share it :)
This was the first time I've ever attempted roads of this sorts. I don't claim myself as a professional adv rider. I'm an avid adventurer who likes to do things my own way and its been working for me for the past 12 years.. Yes there are "better ways to do it" but I like my way :)
FYI- This was a borrowed bike and helmet. We tried to lower it as much as possible. It wasn't ideal, but it was the only way I'd have a bike for this trip. Same went for the oversized helmet- Yes I knew the risk.
As far as picking the bike up. I know how to correctly pick up a bike, I've watched many tutorials.. HOWEVER.. I have a very bad disc problem in my back. the "recommended" way to pick up the bike immediately gave me the "no no feeling" The 6 km bag on the back did not make a difference, so wouldn't have helped taking it off. After dropping my bike nearly everday on this trip ( due to the height, mostly standing still) I decided at the end of the trip to try my own way to pick it up. which was NOT the recommend way. but it was the perfect way for my body and this bike. Goes to show you , not one technique for all bodies. I made a fun little video about that experience and will release it at the end of all of the episodes. I appreciate all of the concern and tips, but its all good .

excellent trip! thanks for sharing. I've dropped my klr on the same kind of road after a long ride. I felt so stupid trying to pick it up for 30 minutes until two nice gentlemen came and helped. since then I took to proper time and respect to learn how to pick it up solo. in the near future I had to pick it up with a broken foot. all the tips and lessons saved me from a bad situation and I was able to ride to help. I brush up on on technical riding regularly and because of that I have survived a head on collision with a truck and my 2014 klr still runs like new (with out all the cheap plastic parts now) "a smart person learns from their mistakes. a genius learns from other people's mistakes." I love your video and you stole my heart immediately! all the people and scenery are beautiful and you move forward and onward with grace and soul. peace love and travels....oh...and keep the rubber side down! lol

I know that feeling girl...:) Just got stuck with my lightweight WR250R last week, alone, deep deep deep in the north Canadian wilderness, alone, really alone. The bike was stuck in the mud trough the chain. Took me 1h30 to get out of there. I had to drop the bike on it's side and pull it on it's side for like 100 meters. Mmmmmmm. Well. That was an adventure...:)

Dropping the bike can easily happen when you're tired (& your bike's top heavy!) but also when you haven't gone anywhere & are just kick starting it too! (Don't ask me how I know this, or the crowd who were watching!) Most people have bikes that are too heavy. I admire your spirit. Like you say near the end, in adversity there can be light too. You sometimes discover things you would never had known if it wasn't for the difficulties.

I learned how to stand up a bike in the early 1970s when I saw an old guy, must have been 80+ years old, drop his Harley crossing railroad tracks. Before I could get over to him to help he already stood it up by himself. He had dumped it on it's left side, so he pulled the front wheel as far as he could to the left, held the front brake, had it in 1st gear and slowly let the clutch out. The bike stood itself back up using it's own power!

It's a world full of wonder and challenges Rosie but full of fabulous people to. 2016 for me was the hardest time and yet through what most people would like to brush aside there lay the illumination as you hinted at. I think you learnt some new skills on the bike here. Good going. Mark
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 7 лет назад
I admire your bravery Rosie. If the bike falls again, take off all the luggage, put the bike into gear, turn the front wheel to point towards the sky, squat beneath the lower handlebar grip, cup your two hands together and keeping your back straight push hard vertically on the grip using both the muscles in your arms and legs at the same time. This is a technique the Dakar riding instructors at the BMW Off Road Skills Course in Wales teach. I hope it helps you!

You might've found this out later on Rosie: To pick up your bike, leave the bottom handlebar grip in the forward position it fell on, as far forward as you can make it go, with the front of the front tyre pointing upwards towards the sky. Stand in front of the bike near the grip that's in the dirt. Face the tail light. Bend down (bend knees, not back) and grab that grip in both hands and simply stand up. You've just got to be careful keeping it balanced while you sidle round to where the side stand is and snap it down. If the bike's fallen on the right side, put the side stand down (actually, up) before picking the bike up. It's always the lower grip, the one in the dirt, that you want forward. This gives you awesome leverage - you can pick up anything with this technique.

A few things everyone should practice are: 1. Picking up your downed bike. 2. Bump starting (popping the clutch) your bike. 3. Jump starting your bike. Things I've learned about doing each: 1. You CAN pick up a KLR, but you may have to (a) spin it (yes it's going to cause scratches) to get the wheels downhill, and (b) remove all your packed gear. 2. You'll need to be in 3rd, or 2nd. Practice in a parking deck where you have lots of distance to roll. 3. You probably don't have tools to remove your seat, so jump directly to the starter solenoid and your footpeg.

First off, way to go Rosie! Yes, you are gaining experience but isn't that the point? A tip about picking up the bike; carry a pipe or pole ( about 4 or 5 feet) that you can fit into the frame and then lever the bike up with body weight. You'll be surprised at how easy this makes it. Try it out when you are in good circumstances, as in you have help if needed. Crash bars with a larger piece of pipe welded to them will make this an easier job. In any case, offloading your gear will make the lift easier. If you can't be seen by other road users, walk up the road and place something colorful around a rock and leave it in the middle of the road. If nothing else, people will slow down to see what it is.Lastly, on rough and loose surfaces, it helps to let some air out of your tires to get better grip. Just don't forget to bring an air pump for when you to harder surfaces.Happy Trails. You Rock Rosie!Tim.

Rosie, you...are an incredibly brave rider. I want to say that because I just bought my first bike and am now wondering if I made the correct decision. At this time I am struggling to see the enjoyment of riding. I am in a steep learning curve and am always "struggling" with control even though I went to learning school and have passed all the skills test. Stumbling upon your video has given me an inspiration to continue and find that satisfaction of riding. Thank you. You are indeed an inspiration.

I've been a personal MC instructor for 8 people (only doing it for fun, requesting gas- and coffee money only), I never leave garage-training before the trainee is comfortably picking up the bike in question. Session after that is parking lot and low speed maneuvering (usually taking between 2 to 5 days for student to master, depending on student). Towards the end we do some rough-surface and braking on gravel.

Engine crash bars can help when lifting the bike up. They give you an easy pivot point to get the bike up from flat on the ground, then move to the lower handle bar for the final lift to upright. They also reduce the risk of trapping a leg under the bike. Good luck with your adventures.

1) You really should never ride a bike that you can't pick up... Dropping a motorcycle is not a matter of if but when... if you were further from village, at night, you're just putting yourself in way more risk than necessary. Granted I give you props for taking on a challenge but I just think the risk is not worth the reward. 2) why didn't you take off the bags from the back.. to make the bike lighter. Good video though.
@RosieGabrielle
@RosieGabrielle 7 лет назад
I agree 100% unfortunately this was a borrowed bike and I couldn't lower it anymore. so would have meant not doing this trip.... I knew the risks.. and funny enough found out after my trip that I could indeed pick up the bike !! did a super funny video on it ;) the bag was probably around 6-7 kg... didn't make a difference. I have disc problems in my back and this "recommended " technique was not good for me, it actually hurt my back more, immediately I got the "no feeling" In the end I used my own technique and it didn't hurt my back at all !! would have saved me tons cuz I dropped that damn pig EVERYDAY !! Buuuuuuut !!!!.... I never would have met the amazing peopple I did and experience the love and kindness from complete strangers.. so , for me , it was worth it :)
@shauntoomey3299
@shauntoomey3299 7 лет назад
BigDog I agree those bags should have been taken off. when you lift a bike it pivots of course on the wheels which makes that 6-7kgs being the furtherest from the pivot the hardest 6-7kgs on the bike to lift. Anyway she adapted and overcame which is good. Great lesson here for anyone planning a similar adventure to make sure you have equipment suited to you and the task. Most people practice picking up a bike once or twice and think they have it but it is a technique that should be practiced more. Injury can throw all that out the window. Travel safe people and enjoy.
@oncallmonkey
@oncallmonkey 7 лет назад
Next time, remember to rotate the bike so the wheels are downhill. Then lift it up enough so that both wheels are on the ground and re-position yourself for leverage before you really push. That'll make it much easier. I've seen women much smaller than you pick up bikes bigger and taller than your KLR almost effortlessly by maximizing their leverage. When you get a chance, you might consider taking the bike into some grass or a beach with a friend. Then lay it down and practice picking it up, with help at first, and soon you'll figure out the best way that works for you. Then do that several times so your body will remember how to do it again later.
@DC101-i8q
@DC101-i8q 7 лет назад
Yeah I was looking at you picking it up and you really shouldn't be lifting with your back (all manual handling courses tell you not to do so!), it's your quads, hamstrings and calves that should be doing the work. Glad you've figured out how to lift it!

Crrrrrazy day, but it all worked out! I've had a lot of those days myself, where you crawl into your tent or bed or whatever so exhausted and just spinning with the strangeness and intensity of it all. Well done with the video though, definitely interesting. By the way, my main suggestion would be about titling your videos. The #1 strategy if you want to get more viewers and subscribers, etc., is to title your videos so that you're targeting non-subscribers, so that you're reaching out to new people. Think of what would grab someone's interest who knows nothing about you, doesn't know who you are. And also make it keyword relevant to the place, for people who might be searching for travel information for that place, or else interested in motorcycle adventures. For example, for a video like this I might title it "My bike broke down in the desert of Oman." Or maybe "Oman motorcycle journey day #3: Bike falls in the road!" Something that's interesting, descriptive and also mentions where it's taking place. Anyway it's your thing, but just a tip! Keep at it and you'll go places. :)

Great suggestion thanks !! I know that titling is key, just didn't know how to strategically title it, but good tip ! Thanks :)

Yeah that will make a big difference. My basic strategy is that I'm trying to post videos that get long-term views because it matches up with what people are interested in and/or actively searching for. Videos that are still getting views years later. People find my videos to a great extent because they're planning their trips to somewhere, search online for info about it and then find my videos. Then I get a view and maybe a subscriber. Some of my videos are getting views just because they sound exciting, so that's a good way to go too. But also practical titles about a specific place tend to do well, especially if it looks like they will be informative about the place. Not that there are any rules of course, you never know what's going to do well on youtube. Trial and error is really the best way to go, just try different things and see what works. Also, I'll go back over my titles for videos I've posted before and if they aren't getting views anymore, and I can think of another title that might do better then I'll change it, and sometimes the video will start getting more views. Have fun and good luck! That's awesome you're going to Mozambique. And that could be a good place for videos too.

Personally I think you should show everyone how you pick this bike up. I know a lot of people who would benefit from your experience. My bike is a lot heavier then that one and I am a lot bigger/stronger then you and I still have trouble sometimes. I often just nudge it up and kick stuff under, my bag, helmet, anything really until it gets at an angle I can just get it the rest of the way. It's not the correct way, but it works for me. I am glad you can finally do it.

Lesson 2: Make sure you can pick your bike up fully loaded on the surface you plan to ride. It is one thing to pick your bike up in the drive, unloaded and rested. Take it out for a good ride loaded (get the feel for her) and try picking it up in some gravel or better yet sand, if you can manage this you are much less likely to be stuck in this jam.

Nice video, Rosie. Looks like an absolutely fantastic trip. We need more folks willing to share positive experiences of traveling the world over. We're suffering from an overabundance of fear these days. Never mind the yahoos who talk about only riding a bike you can pick up. In the right circumstances, even exceptionally light machines will wear you out.

Don't beat yourself for not being able to pick up your bike. Often times it is simply practice. Plus, removing your tail bag would have helped immensely (not trying to be a Monday morning quarterback, simply an observation). :) If you are in a good place with friends/locals around, perhaps practice. Lay the bike down on a blanket and I bet you will surprise yourself and gain a lot of confidence. You are absolutely amazing!! I'm only 5 and 1/2 months late but Happy New Year, Rosie!!!

You did well, I'm a bloke and I can't pick up my KLR650 when it is fully loaded, I've got pretty skinny chicken legs haha. Such a tough situation, I've once dropped my bike in the middle of no where but was lucky that a truck driver came past within the next minute (although I hadn't seen another vehicle for hours).. that was in the middle of the Indian Himalayan mountains in Kashmir. Love the adventures, keep the videos coming.

I recently took a trip where I ended up dropping my bike over several times, actually several times in a day. I've found that if I position my bike so that the tires are facing the downhill side and the handlebars are facing uphill, it's much easier to pick-up. A couple of times I had to spin it on the ground to get it positioned so I could pick it up. It may not be facing the direction you need to go once you get it back up, but at least it's up on two wheels again. Your videos are interesting, to say the least, I'm enjoying watching them.

Suggest that you install a side bar that prevent the bike from crushing your leg when fall. Also fabricate the side bar in such a way that when the bike drop, it stay at least 40 degree upright. This is easier to lift up your bike when it drop.

You were so close to getting it up. You had the right form, back against the bike, bent knees, I think you might have got it if you just pushed it up slowly using your legs not your arms, instead of trying to stand it straight up. I have been in this situation way to many times and I have to say I have not got my 1000cc up multiple times. We can all set and tell you how to do it but we were not there, theirs so many factors when you wipe out , the pain that you have by hitting body parts going down, the position of the bike, the slant of the ground, mud, rocks, sand, it is never easy getting that thing back on its feet. I'd have to say your attitude and composure is so inspiring. So many people would have bagged it at that point and gave up. Great job, safe journey on all your adventures.

I Learned decades ago.....never ride what you can't pick up. That was after I fell over w/ my buddy's Gold Wing. In flip-flops. Picked that up solo. And couldn't put a t-shirt on/off for the next three days. Lastly, a little more respect for your brain. Helmets save lives; I'm living proof, three times over....ALL on bicycles. I should be dead or paralyzed. Your head is a fragile egg. Don't believe me: next time in a bar just tip yourself over backwards in your chair. IF you're afraid of that, imagine that concrete curb at 50. And hard-packed dirt feels like concrete.....

No one should ride in flip flops. I always wear riding boots, mine even have steel toes but to each their own, it must be because of the time my bike landed on my foot that was pinned under the bike ouch!! was lucky that someone was there to lift it off my foot!! It was a six hundred pound bike.

You are incredible! One tip: If you want to lift the bike, use a piece of string or clothing to tie around the break handle to make sure your bike doesn't roll while lifting. But maybe I missed that bit :P
