@@DCOOKGAMING what I meant was the hidden functionality inside of them, but Nintendo completely removed that in the revised versions (black Wiis I think)
Your Wii doesn’t have the dvd functionality built into it. Originally wiis we’re going to have dvd functionality but it got removed because they would have to pay a licensing fee for every wii sold however they still made it so the disk drive could read dvd’s but no software was made to run them. Nintendo made an revision of the Wii with out that and The black Wii’s were made after they removed dvd functionality
@@chickenmeatpizza if you have the first Wii with the serial number that starts with RVL-001 you can watch dvds. But if you have RVL-101 or the Wii mini you can’t. An easy way to tell if you can quickly is does your Wii stand upright and play GameCube games or does it sit on its side
The earliest Wii's are the only ones with DVD support, but if you have a Family Edition you can change the disk drive and you can even restore the GameCube compatibility, but for the last one you need a mod, in my case my model is RVL-001 so my console is compatible
you see, the problem is, the wii this person's using is an RVL-001 Wii (you can tell because the Wii logo is flipped sideways when in a horizontal position). so it really just depends on whether the disc drive can run dvds in general, the model number doesn't matter in this case.
*The older white wiis commonly have dvd functions and the black, red, mini and family edition (one with no gc compatibility and is sideways) got that removed sadly.*
@@PikachuGamerSMTmore better explanation, close to your Wii serial code, there is something that says RVL-X01 The X can have 3 outcomes 0 = OG Wii, GameCube support without modding it, planned to have DVD compatibility 1 = Family Wii, No GameCube support without modding it, No DVD Support 2 = Wii mini, who the f*ck cares about this? No GameCube support without modding it, No DVD Support, no Internet support, No SD Card, but worst of all, *VERY HARD TO MOD.*
early white wiis have a drive with dvd support, but later wiis (such as the black one, which you have) have a different drive called d3-2 which removed dvd support
You have the new model and only the old model plays dvds but if you attach a dvd player to the usb ports on the back it should work. That’s what I did.
@@its.swagster Oh ok thanks sir, but you have to check if your Wiis were designed to be vertical or horizontal, if vertically then it's a RVL-001 And like I said, Wii + Wii Sports bundle is capable to play DVDs (not sure if *all* of them are capable or not) which mean yes there was some RVL-001 bundles besides the Wii Sports one, there was a Wii Sports Resort bundle that featured a RVL-001 Wii (usually they come with motion plus) that released in 2009 ig and that was in a time when Nintendo removed that capability
You have a model of Wii that can't read DVDs. Only the early white Wiis can read DVDs, as it was a last second cut feature, and they couldn't remove DVD support from the DVD Drive in time.
All these other comments are making me bring up a question, as I own an unmodified GCN compatible black Wii. Is there or could there be a piece of homebrew that allows DVD video playback on that type of console?
Built in, that is true but even the Wii U can if you use a USB External DVD Drive. (I personally tried a External DVD Drive and it worked on my Wii U) This might work on the Wii Mini if the WiiMC usb drive can be unpluged and replaced with a External DVD Drive or if WiiMC supports hubs (I don't have a Wii Mini though)
