The title and content are attention grabbing, but in my experience: -Not all but still some habits are necessary (especially small key habits that creates chain reaction) for people that easily feel lost within thoughts & anxiety. They don't have to be always beneficial to your interest. -Keep habits simple. Don't push for unsustainable +30 min habits, just keep them under 10 min. -Try to conquer them in the morning. This way you'll not carry the burden of thoughts about your habit tracking. Also you'll start your day with victory. So, i still think habits are underrated in our society...
@Triisane
@Triisane 4 года назад
yeah like you can still take cold showers because that won't take anymore time than a regular hot shower. and you can still meditate for 10 minutes either right when you wake up or before you go to bed without distracting yourself from the goal Whereas something like exercising 1 hour plus a day everyday can be distracting for someone who isn't trying to become an athlete
@AndrewKirbys
@AndrewKirbys 4 года назад
I'm not arguing that cold showers aren't worth doing, but you can't forget about the mental space that they occupy in your mind. I remember when I was consistently doing them I was: reading about them, watching about them, talking about them, thinking about them.
@NoticeMeSenpaiii
@NoticeMeSenpaiii 4 года назад
As someone with anxiety and frequent feelings of crippling overwhelm, I agree 100%. I don't really have one goal or direction I'm working towards. I'm more or less wandering and trying to find a direction. For me, having habits (even without a "real" purpose) gives me a sense of direction every day while I find my bearings. Otherwise, I'd probably just hide in bed most days to avoid the overwhelming endlessness of choices. It gives me the tiniest sense of purpose while I try to find a real purpose.
4 года назад
@@AndrewKirbys sounds more like your attitude towards habits wasn't perfect rather than problem being with the habits themselves. Yes, some habits occupy thoughts, some don't. Of course this doesn't contradict the video, it complements it.
@plan4life
@plan4life 4 года назад
Martin Habovštiak I agree with you, but my experience is the same as Andrews. I spend a lot of my day thinking about this habit or that habit and very often I end up not actually doing much of my main habit which is writing/research for my book. Once a habit is a completely established habit, then it takes little to no mental effort. But when you are busy trying to level up your life and perfect your habits it takes a LOT of mental effort. That’s why I have discovered it’s better to introduce new habits one at a time. They really should teach about habits in school. It would be way more useful than some of the shite we learn.
@bananajoe275
@bananajoe275 4 года назад
I have a total different defenition of a habit, i think you don't even talk about habits, you're more talking about building habits. If you have to think about a habit, it's not a habit. I have the habit of brushing my teeth after i get up. I don't think about it for a second, that's why it's useful. I don't need any willpower/discipline to do it, i simply just do it, every day without even focusing on it. Thats why habits are powerful. To build habits you need willpower and thoughts, but only as long as you made them into a HABIT. I am the only one who thinks Andrew paint his pictures way to black and white?
@patchuez
@patchuez 4 года назад
I think he's talking about the time taken up doing it as well. You may not think a lot about doing meditating before you're doing it, but if you're doing it for an hour it's still sucking up a lot of time that "may be beneficial to put somewhere else."

No bro, I agree with You completely. He is just grabbing attention and confusing people. Habits are just habits, it a complete bullshit to say that You pay a cost for a habit all the time. That s true, but when You start making them, and that s fine!
@casanovamindblow8730
@casanovamindblow8730 4 года назад
@@patchuez That is the question of the efficiency and the time usage in general. But it is worth it, if You can dismiss the obstacles to get one habit and to learn to make it ellastic and not to make a big deal of not getting enough attention each day because it not possible anyways. But this video will stop some people on their good way to get habit a real habit and to get concerned about its worth. There is always concern about what we are doing - and that s fine! Try to do that habit for 10 years, and the results will be there - from Your angle of looking, not of others. More and more confusion just makes disorder in our lives. There s a point in the life when You realize - I can t know anything and I can t be perfect, why I will spend a time thinking about to be perfect one day? Get your quest and get Your habits for that quest, live your life and get real expirience, don t get confuse what others are saying or doing.
@bananajoe275

I do meditation before sleep, Wim Hof Method breathing and cold shower in the morning, yoga 6 days a week and running 4 days a week, 16/8 fasting for more than half a year already. I tried yoga and running before, but always got out with some excuses after like 12-15 weeks of working on 1 habit. I was fucked up and tired of it, so i decided to start acting always instead of overthinking everything. From beginning, i remind myself to do those routines with some phone app, but honestly you can just put a mark on paper or whatever, then it got automatic and i dont need to remind anymore. I never think about it, i just do, because i always think and think about thinking before. So for me start of this video is already kinda not true. Also worth mentioned that i started all of these routines at once, after reading Goggins and Willink's books, also re-watched for some reason Will Hunting movie and it really hits me. Discipline is a muscle and you can train it hard. Also Willinks advice about procrastinating on rest was golden for starters, like if you want to delay your workout cuz u kinda tired - do it anyway through the motions and plan a rest for tomorrow, but then you wont rest tomorrow cuz it was a weakness yesterday. Consistency over intensity is the key. Its like a part of my being now, never think about it even in a proccess, i just turn off my brain and its working as meditation series, and you got physical benefits, willpower and discipline.

@@trusttheprocess4775 yeah, you act first and think second, plan once and test your plan, then adapt, instead of thinking again and again to make it perfect. Just GO with whatever and adapt, it is how reality works and not dreaming. Whenever i got into thinking about something on cancelation of some of my routines, i repeat to myself "topic is closed, dont think about it, i dont even know that i just ran yesterday, do i? I dont think, i just do, just do 5 mins first and then its a cake walk". And then like... After your workout youre in NOW and you never working out again in NOW, and you dont think about a week or even tomorrow, you finished today, also dont think about workouts before, theres more important things to do. One step at time, do a step and then be present, just detach and go through motions, even workouts are like that, i just do 1 lap at time or even 1/4 of lap and then 2/4, but now im running for an hour straight. No need to be hardcore if you dont feel like it, ease up, consistency over intensity, i ran slow at first and peaked at 20+ min, not its 60 and i added some interval running as well just for fun. I thought and dreamed for many years, nothing changed by creating super-plans, cuz only by acting you test your ideas, if they ACTUALLY as ideal as you think, reality check everytime, fix your direction and go again.

"Habit in the true sense is when you actually don't have to remember to do it and be forceful". Its just happens. You do it automatically either consciously or subconsciously. If you have to keep remembering or forcing to do it, then you are still in the phase of trying to form habit and you can't call it your habit yet.

@titantill4975 4 года назад
But that's not the only cost. There is always a cost. 30 min of meditation is 30 min not spent on your calling. You need to weigh the pros and cons, compare the costs and benefits.

@@titantill4975That's not the point I made. I just highlighted habit feels natural if already formed. Its only when you are changing or replacing it with new one then its difficult. i also agree in your calling being your main focus and it depends on what are you spending ur time on..with habits like medidation you can be more efficient and productive on true calling and overall well being..5-10 min is ok I guess no more
@marinova1147
@marinova1147 3 года назад
Titan Till Most people who meditate don’t do it for more than 10 minutes so idk where you’re going with this argument. Also, if meditation is the thing that helps you focus and be present, it would definitely be beneficial to you whatever your actual calling is. Same goes for cold showers. You’re gonna shower anyway, might as well do it with cold water. If the concept of a cold shower is so stressful for you that you have to think about it the entire day, then don’t bother. Andrew’s whole shtick is “focus on one thing in your life so that you can be successful and rich as fast as possible and start truly living at 40”. He is definitely inspirational but most people are *shockingly* interested in having more diverse life experiences than hustling 16 hours a day. I like his videos but sometimes I feel like he promotes living with a tunnel vision which is just not realistic (unless you’re *that* keen on becoming ungodly rich)

Oof. I am studying for a master's degree but I ended up taking to gaming a lot. Now I play in tournaments but the difficulty comes with realising that I constructed a reality of gaming so I can underperform in my life. I don't have a job or anything. I even gave up some habits that were supposed to make me a really good artist. I like music and writing and those things go well with academia in my opinion but I have been putting so much stuff off in my life. My relationship ended a while ago and it seems as though to the eyes of those I know I found it easier to not move on from that either.

This video is so important honestly. This is exactly what I have been thinking about for a while now. I'm really grateful for this video. There are simply far too many videos, posts, articles etc. telling us what we SHOULD be doing everyday and they almost shame/belittle you for not doing them all. They're just force feeding us things that have no proper/significant impact on our life(style) and goals. People need to realize that doing a million "healthy" things isn't miraculously going to make you a better person who achieves all their goals and lives a life that truly brings them joy. You can follow all the "millionaire mindset" videos in the world and still be miserable. It truly all comes down to whether you're focusing on the main thing or not. And if you don't know what your main thing is you should go figure that out first, because no amount of RU-vid videos will ever be able to tell you exactly what it is your soul desires. Only you can do that by experimenting with whatever brings you joy.

Habit: an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary. I think what makes a habit a habit is that it is indeed done without thought, but rather in an automatic way, therefore if a particular routine occupies your thoughts it's not a habit. Also how habits can indirectly affect the rest of your day (specially keystone habits) is wildly overlooked.

This video couldn't have come at a better time for me, I can really relate to the guilt of not keeping up with habits. Another thing I've noticed is that some habits like meditation help me a lot some days, while on other days it feels like it's taking time away more than it is helping. Meditation used to give me mental clarity, but recently I started writing in a journal and I find that to be the biggest way to clear my headspace. Anyway, thank you so much for this video! It really helps 😊

One thing I admired about you Andrew is the way you made me habituated to "Liking the videos". Until I watched your videos, other RU-vidrs would say please please like my videos and and it used to look cheap and needy. But your technique was quite different where you gave the reasoning for why we should like the videos and I liked your techniques.

Very true. Often tacking on more helpful habits is just a means of procrastination. An act of resistance against what you know you need to be doing. What I'm finding works well for me at this point in my life is using a few quick habits that upramp me into my main thing so that I go into it with momentum & focus

This is exactly that reminder I needed today. I got overwhelmed with how I was gonna incorporate all those little habits that reflect my many interests to the point that my day felt so crowded and suffocating. Yeah, I just needed focus.

I really hope you one day have a million views for your videos. Your videos are literally some of the best - high productivity - videos on RU-vid. I have listened to many different creators who all pretty much say the same thing but your focus on what is the main thing vs what is a good thing, is a game changer. Best wishes and please keep making videos.

While i agree you need to focus most of your energy on your career, if you do nothing but that you will slowly go insane. Many of these other habits help you manage your mind and keep you balanced, so some of them are certainly worth doing. Additionally, once your habit has set in and become concrete, not much thought and energy has to go into it, you just do it automatically, so the only cost is the time.

this is too good! i'm far too guilty of literally every single one of those habits mentioned in the beginning LOL i'm pretty good at sticking with the ones i need the most. eg: meditation 10 mins every morning, although i only journal once a week for a check-in, Whim Hoff, when i have the energy, i fell off the bullet train trend though. I've got to say Andrew, I've been checking out quite a few of your videos recently and i genuinely wish i had this when i was in high-school! keep up the great work! :)

One of the main things that makes me dismiss so many of the people telling me to just ditch the habits that "wastr my time" like social media and gaming is that though these habits seldom have a big financial improvement or whatever (though they can), I have something I like to call an Emotional Tax that I need to pay In my case, my chronic loneliness and sense of alienation pushes me to stay on social media because doing anything else makes this lingering, creeping loneliness slowly crawl back to my brain and destroy me "Talk to people in the real world then!" Oho did I try. But my interests and my country's culture are so vastly disconnected that bonding with anyone over a habit/mutual is so, so rare... That when it happens, the people are only interested in me for this habit, not me as a person. At least I'm good in social media At least I enjoy gaming At least these "waste of time"s give me a sense that life is worth living rather than an empty agony of "habit building"

I think we should create a schedule. Keep it simple and try our best to stick to it. We may fall off it but we should get right back up the next day. Also we should not lose focus on the main thing of our life that has high leverage and therefore should dedicate our time wisely. Thank you for this vid. I was feeling overwhelmed with my habit trackers and breaking the streak.

After just reading your title I deleted my productivity app. Then I watched your video and knew I did the right thing. I was trying to apply all of what it was recommended to me, but none of it stuck or was overwhelmed by the number of habits it was trying to teach me. I still loved the app, but it wasn't providing me the benefits I was looking for if I were to just focus on the fewer habits that are working for me.

Hi Andrew, FANTASTIC VIDEO. i've watched more than a dozen of your videos, and those of Patrick Bet David, Tom Bilyeu, but this is the BEST VIDEO ever for anyone who wants to be successful. For those of you who haven't seen it, it's this: Focus 99.0% of your time on the main thing. And if you have 10 other stuff to do, divide the remaining 0.1% among those 10 things. Remember 99.9% of your time on the Main Thing. Ilove you Mr. Kirby!!!

I used to think that habits are boring no matter how effective they may be. I don't like when things are over organized, and it just takes too much time. But with experience, I understood that the real phase that makes habits take me too much effort is when I am trying to implement them. I need to think about it, do research, prepare for it...and everything else you said. But in reality, I wake up at 6am, I take my morning coffee everyday, I read a few pages, I practice my hobbies, I work in the morning, study in the evening, cook once a day, go on social media... And these are habits ! They don't take me a lot of effort and I don't need to think about them for so long. They are just habits. I would prefer that it takes me a lot of energy for a month to implement a habit that could help me move forward instead of not doing anything knowing that I can be more productive if I change my routine. But I completely understand what you said and I've learned a lot of things. Very informative, thanks for sharing your point of view !

Hallo Andrew thanks for charing your unique and critical point of view about some believes we have as a society towadays. Some poeple in the comments did missunderstand you...but what I got is: "1.)At first be MINIMAL with new habits, because it takes a LOT of energy. 2.) Think about the habit: Have you externally reason to do that or internally? 3.) Just DO IT until it doesn't take the breath out of you. One extra point of yours (I think): We as a society are crashed with "ideal habits", for example meditating, journaling...ect. and we should have a reflection on that topic, because not everyone is same and on the long term people get more STRESS instead of "changing life for the better with new habits". 🤔 I understand your perspective because I also made the same experience and it is SUCH a relief to JUST LET GO of "ideal habits" and learning to listen to the "inner voice"....🙃 I wish you and your family health and happiness and thank you ⚘ from Germanyyyy❤❤❤

When your first example started out "If you're an artist..." journaling instead of picking up a damn paint brush, I thought 'Oooooh booy.' I have never felt so called out in my life. ;_; My attempts to incorporate art into my daily routine have been mediocre at best, and always played second to something else. A day before watching this vid I had started adding practice sessions as the last part of my morning routine but this definitely got me rethinking things now.
