Tune in to see a fail turn into a win!
When I received this piece of rough opal, its organic shape reminded me of a map of Australia - this could be a fun project!
Well, it didn't quite work out as planned unfortunately but our redirection gave us success in cutting some great gems.
For those of you playing at home, this is the last video made in my old workshop.
We've had some great times cutting and polishing opals in there and the joy of filming and sharing it with you all makes me so happy!
We have a brand new workshop to cut and film in and we can't wait to start sharing those videos with you - stay tuned!
Thanks for watching :)

I watch these videos with such baited breath because the tension is palpable. On the surface, it looks so easy just rubbing stones on a wheel. Compared to digging ditches people will say this is "easy work". However, after some years of education from you, I've learned that this is one of the most stressful occupations one can undertake. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

Good call. The combination of the red and yellow to form that awesome orange is simply gorgeous. At least there were ten seconds of carving in the video. Hehe. Lastly, the final? video from the old shop, such good memories. Thank you, again, for sharing your thoughts, visions, and expertise of the opal cutting process with us all (and thanks for the uncurable case of opalholism). We appreciate you, sir.

Such nice opals, well done Justin! They are really gorgeous 😍 gems 💎❤️ with that broad flash of colors yellow and red making it orange-red! When I think Australia I think of the red soil so gems with red coloration seems to fit in just about right in that theme. You're amazing 👏 as usual Justin and I wish you and BOD good luck in Tucson! This is very valuable information to know. Most of the (cheap) opals I hobby cut have the same thin layers, so it's good to know it's a common issue, and cutting down the stone can make a good opal. Thanks!

I wanted to cry when you started removing the sand in the centre of that piece I would have loved for it to have been made into a bead for my pandora bracelet, the sand could have been drilled out saving the surrounding opal. If you ever find other solid pieces around 7mm thick about 15mm in diameter with sand in the centre that could be drilled out, 5mm hole. I'd be quite interested depending on price of course 🤦🏼‍♀️

I sampled another Opal cutter (is that the correct term?) for the very first time and was greatly disappointed. He cut some opals similar to the light colored stones as you have here. But then he proceeded to 'treat' the stones with sugar water, then acid and then bi-carbonated water. He seemed quite pleased with the end results. I thought they were some of the ugliest gems I have ever seen! They looked like rags that had been dropped into an oil spill - ugly black tendrils snaking through very sub-standard stones. I am so glad that you do not 'treat' your gems!!
