Kevin seems like a great representative of what a Jeet Kune Do practitioner is supposed to be. Not someone who tries to imitate Bruce Lee in their style, but someone who composes their own art after an extensive exploration of tested styles. The techniques that Bruce Lee personally found effective may be a useful guideline, but so could the techniques of any other capable martial artist.
@ronmka8931
@ronmka8931 11 месяцев назад
Technically modern mma is jeet kune do
@johnmaco
@johnmaco 11 месяцев назад
Yes and no. The thing with MMA is that it seeks to conform to the rules of MMA competitions like the UFC, etc. JKD is not a martial art, it is a philosophy, where the maxim of not having limits of any kind prevails.
@maxhensley1685
@maxhensley1685 11 месяцев назад
@@ronmka8931 I think it makes sense to think of MMA as basically the sport version of jeet kune do. If you want to practice for self defense, military survival, etc. you should probably still incorporate MMA style sparring into your training, but you'd have different emphases in your training than a pro fighter, because you're preparing for the possibility of using your skills in different contexts. Historical martial arts involved overlapping but distinct skills and equipment for self defense, battlefield combat and dueling. MMA is basically dueling-focused unarmed martial arts.

@@RD-yv4cc or to just swing an overhand
@stevenburton4966
@stevenburton4966 11 месяцев назад
there's a few different viable defenses to chain punches. Jeff has a huge advantage in height/arm length so he's able to apply it with less need for a window in kevin's defense. otherwise chain punching is most effective after trapping the opponents hands or somehow finding an opening in their defense. generally its very hard to just start throwing it out, especially at somewhat safe or neutral distances and get value out of it. kevin could use teeps for a range advantage to shut them down. side stepping can be very useful against chain punching. double leg take downs can be useful against chain punching but yeah sometimes the best we can figure out in the moment is to run away lol. I want to say in wing chun, you can try to use a tan sau to direct the chain punches upward and then get an effect sort of like a hand trap or maybe a legitimate hand trap and then slip under neath with a punch from your other arm to shut it down as well. Chain punches are very fun and can have a lot of value. I certainly love using them. but they're not a perfect move. they have weaknesses that can be exploited.

@jagger_claw Greetings! Yes! I love learning more. With a few short breaks here and there, I've been involved in various forms of MA my entire life. Favorite art - Judo! Most random art - Irish stick fighting. The most useful (new) book for me has been The Book of Martial Power by Pearlman. My main interest right now is hybrid systems. I'm still very much into the traditional approaches, philosophies, and theories. That's one of the reasons I like Kevin's work here. He is very MA smart, and that just makes everything better and more useful.

Amazing! I love the fun you guys have here! This is lacking so much in most people I see spar, sadly! A perfect balance between proper application and control and counters, while playing with different ideas real time. Btw when you blitz the chain punches, have you tried to change angles as he is defending statically? Once you connect - you simply pull him off to a side and blast from an angle, and when he re-aligns to protect against the new threat, you simply angle the opposite direction and blast again. Usually then they push forward to stop it by which you retreat while blasting as well XD I did this yesterday with a tai guy, got him pretty frustrated XD

WC trains against WC methods... to develop the proper principles and coordination. However... most fighters are not going to attack you with WC. As such, you need to practice against other arts methods... to make sure that you fully understand which methods to use, and at what ranges. Many of WCs arm movements works great at medium distances.. but once the OP is too close, they can use cutting angles to slip through. You either have to keep changing the distances and angles... or use a different hand tech. All of the Principles and Technology is sound... but, you tend to have to gain certain Combat application, through trial and error... because most WC schools do not teach it based on the way people tend to fight today. In the Ancient days of Wing Chuns actual origins... These fighters would have been testing their arts methods against other artists arts, often. That was a very typical and Logical thing to do. Its also how the Chinese arts kept advancing... because when one arts methods failed, they would either develop a new counter... or they would adopt the new superior technology.. of the winning arts methods. Such adaptations only stopped, after the Industrial Era of China... after Mao's "Cultural Revolution" (where almost all of the combat arts were Wiped out... due to Mao's +60 year ban on the practice and teaching of them).

Kevin's scorpion punch is fairly similar to the Ox Horn Strike from Hung Gar (often done as a paired-simultaneous strike, which I've also seen Kevin use on his channel). Kevin's version here follows a slightly different line than the couple of variants I learned. I've found it quite handy when sparring, myself (even though I'm well out of practice with Hung Gar, as a whole). Edit: 3:49 is pretty darn close to the Hung Gar version.

These videos are amazing. Im just starting to get into martial arts and I'm actually kind of stressed out trying to decide what to commit to. I'm late to the party (32 years old) and I've been jumping around my local gyms and schools taking them up on free intro classes, getting a feel for everything I can and meeting the instructors. Based on the schools near me, and the quality and experience of the teachers, and what I'm interested in, I have it narrowed down to a few. Either BJJ, Kickboxing/Muay Thai, or Karate. I don't have any desire to actually fight, it's more for getting my life back together, taking power back building discipline and finding peace. That being said I do want to learn an art that will hold up in a real fight against someone who has trained as well. I've been undecided for a couple weeks now and i'm running out of free classes lol. If anyone reading this has anything helpful to say about this, the advice would be much appreciated. I love you all

@her0her0

Start with BJJ as it’s going to require more of your attention then anything else at first. You’re late to the party, but with BJJ you can still do fun things like compete regularly well into your 40s-50s. It can take awhile to acclimate to grappling if you’ve never done any before, and striking takes less time to catch on imo. Once you’ve built a good base of fundamentals, add a few days a week of a striking art.. Muay Thai is fun, but I also think certain Karate styles are fun too. I mean, if you start with BJJ first you might end up just wanting to add another grappling art like Judo or BJJ to make you even more of a well rounded grappler.

Bro do whichever one is the most attractive to you and don’t worry about it’s practicality in a “real fight”. You are way more likely to devote yourself and work hard at an art that you genuinely are interested in and enjoy

Probably best to choose the gym that you think fits your personality the best. If that happens to be karate make sure you spar lightly so you can practise the real thing too. Good luck!

You know what I love about both of you? It's not the typical "MMA rules all" but the much more common sense "all techniques work in different situations". That being said, if you are a Martial Artist and serious, you will add other techniques from other Martial Arts to cover the lack in the previous once. Or you go "Jeet Kun Do", for example - since Bruce did that already. Thanks again for staying positive and showing us a good time.

Those switching kicks are bad ass just like in TKD. The pressure punches are similar to the weight bag punches drills. Nice sparring and demo of Wingchun. Thanks Jeff & Kev 👍🙏

Kevin is so HUMBLE. I always laugh and have a lot of fun during sparring and also give cred DURING sparring when my opponent is doing something impressive (successful feint, or successfully head kick etc.). I would love to sparr (and loose) against Kevin. Such a nice guy! Made me smile several times during this video. Thanks for sharing it! ❤
