"I completely fxcked up." -David Orlowsky
Clarinetist David Orlowsky keeps it real in his assessment of what it means to be a musician today and how to be yourself. He describes an incident wherein a standout mistake gave him freedom and ultimately success. He describes his love of klezmer music and surfing; refreshing and candid, this is not to be missed.
Episode 112 running time 27 minutes • Filmed May 2021 in Berlin

Regarding mistakes - I used to arrange to see Joan Sutherland at many of her recital dates. There was always a bit of tension at the beginning of the concert because she sang all those acrobatics. But she was notorious for mistakes - forgetting words, notes, entrances. She would invariably hit an obstacle, STOP THE CONCERT, start over again. And all the tension was gone! She was more relaxed, the public was more comfortable, and the performances became spectacular. I heard Ashkenazy make a big mistake on the piano at Lincoln Center. Most people don’t know and, if the artist continues as if nothing happened, the mistake is as effervescent as a soap bubble.

Montserrat Caballé was also famous for singing the wrong words or forgetting parts of arias. It was almost a signature of her style. It would have been disappointing if she actually got through an entire performance without any little mishaps.

@@da__lang Oh yes, especially in Wagner! She would just stand there and, with true conviction, sing an entirely new libretto 🤣
