I'm the team lead for an undergrad CubeSat project that is effectively trying to replicate some of the functionality of the Landsat-8 mission. The amount of points in this video that are applicable has been staggering, and I very well might use this during the onboarding process for new team members.

A few corrections pointed out by viewers: - At 08:40 Landsat pixels are 30m on the ground, not 30cm - At 11:26 I mention polarisation although I go on to showcase is interferometry, which uses the phase of the image. I should have said phase instead of polarisation

Great video about satellite imagery. I am glad you started with Landsat. The 50 years of Landsat is an important background for the whole satellite image industry. I first started looking at Landsat in college. The first civilian synthetic aperture radar satellite, called Seasat, was launched by NASA in 1978, but it only lasted about 3 months and did not cover the whole Earth like Landsat. NASA is only going to have a new synthetic aperture radar satellite in orbit starting in 2024 with NISAR.

this was really good. For detail, we should remember the Hubble telescope was the first of it's size pointing to space. Two previous satellites of the same size pointed down before Hubble was launched. I talked with a retired military gentleman who worked in imagery. He said he saw a photo that showed the name of a golf ball from a satellite in 1971. I think military is much higher than they share.

4:25 In the 1990s a similar quality image was accidentally released in a Congressional report, and 1960s era film based images were almost the same quality, so I think that's about the best any lens can do looking through the atmosphere.

I was an imagery analyst through the 90s(US Army) and our imagery was a bit better than that. The second or third generation imaging(photo of a projection of a photo,) is likely to have significantly degraded it. More interesting than the optical resolution, is what can be gleaned from the imagery. In Desert Storm, we could tell whether a truck was carrying personnel or equipment, by the color of local vegetation. We spent hundreds of hours studying local botany, so that we could assess the soil composition and environmental conditions from color and distribution of vegetation. Thus, we could estimate the weight of a vehicle, by how it maneuvered off-road; and thus take a guess at what type of cargo was onboard. It should also be noted that military sat imagery is all viewed in stereo, so the apparent resolution is *much* higher. Like, stunningly higher. The cool factor of stereo satellite images can't be overstated.

My company built the Worldview 1 & 2 satellites for Digital Globe. I personally helped build the 2-Axis Gimbals for the High Gain Antennas so they could track ground stations even while imaging. We also likely developed GEO Imaging satellites that can image under 1 meter on the surface FROM GEO ORBIT! Ask any Optical Engineer today if this is possible, and they will likely say NO. Lookup the MOIRE Program from Ball Aerospace. (Membrane Optic Imager Real-Time Exploitation (MOIRE) telescope.) It was going to be the next greatest thing in space imaging tech. We built a tech demonstrator of the concept and proved it WOULD WORK. Then the entire program completely disappeared never to be heard from again. I WONDER WHY?
@stuartgray5877
@stuartgray5877 Месяц назад
I also helped build the NPP-Suomi Spacecraft which took the images used in the famous "Blue Marble" composite image released by NASA (Bob Simmons) in about 2012. That full earth image was assembled by images from the VIIRS Instrument in LEO. I then helped build, launch, and commission its big Brother JPSS-1 (now NOAA-20). And regarding "imaging technology", I also helped build JWST, Kepler Space Telescope, IXPE Xray Telescope, and I am helping with the upcoming NEO-S mission. My company built the corrective optics for Hubble and now most of the instruments aboard Hubble were provided by us.

Regarding being able to notice millimeter differences; Since the U.S has treaties limiting the number of ICBMs, we have more launch sites, than we have missiles. So missiles are shuffled from one site to another to keep their exact location unknown. The trucks that move these missiles, have suspension systems that will lower the trucks to look like they have a heavy missile on board, when they are actually moving an empty shell. This fake "squatting" is done to fool the satellites that can notice the difference. The ultimate shell game.

That pause at 11:52 needs to be pregnant. These systems can see that mm level change meters under the surface layer! But that's not creepy like having algorithms that can detect the nanometers delays in noise absorbed by the signal and discern audible conversations being held in passing jets. We can do some real magic with SAR.

I still couldn't find the info I was looking for. From what I saw a satellite takes at most two hours to circle the Earth. This means it covers 2,77 meters in 1/2000 of a second. So if that's the speed of the camera shutter, it's a 2,77 meters blur. Is there a motor on the camera to make it track the surface of the Earth, cancelling the satellite's speed, or is the shutter speed faster?

You've piqued my interest! Could you describe it like the colours on a butterfly's wing? We can't see or hope to see the actual grooves that split the light, no matter how good our eyesight or the seeing conditions are. But we can infer the size of the grating the butterfly is using on a certain patch by observing the colour. Would that be a good analogy? Oh! Subscribed! Great video mate, well done. So something in the back of my mind is a space, planet exploring localized sat. Like the syncing of images, you create a network that is in orbit but they all view towards mars, and then train and use aoftware to get the same milimetre changes from and earth orbit... its taking a macro picture of a flee from a mile away, its possible... space allows targeting that flee easiley.. in training one can improve optics and variable imaging and soon kust get milimetre images of all localized objects i the solar system from earth orbit. This then means satikittes for exlooration can then change to landing and returning exercises....

@@piotrd.4850 The theoretical resolution, given perfect mirror quality and the operating altitude, has been reported to be 6cm (about 2.4 inches). Actual resolutions have always been classified, but probably KH-11 was close to that. I believe later modification involve faster frame rates, ability to quickly switch between oblique and vertical exposures, and payload weights. "Advanced KH-11" may have referred to what has been described as KH-12. The "fact of" image reconnaissance and many of the code names and program names were declassified in the early 1990's and the official use of the KH phrase and designator was dropped shortly after that.

What can they see from space? Take the most advanced and the most high res photography that anyone will admit to then double the visual acuity of that and yo will still nit have the precision of what the military will be keeping secret for some time to come. But it is even more than that now because when you link these extreme imagers to AI they now can see crowds of people and cars driving along and identify persons looking straight down even though they can't see your face. Not only that but they can keep track of 100 different target persons and vehicles at a time. And that is not even really secret anymore or I would not know this. I would bet good money that the military can tell what brand of smokes you use when you pull the pack out to light one up.

That moment when you realize the super smart guy doesn't know the difference between a Centimeter and a Kilometer. 😳

Yes but when you think about something falling into orbit think of a top spinning eventually that top is going to stop

Sorry to correct you - pretty sure you just misspoke misread your skript. A centimeter is a tenth of a meter and not a name for ten meters 8:40 you show the 30m square and narrate 30 centimeters and then the smaller is 10 meters. A 30cm (approx 12 inch) square would be inside a 10 meter square not around it. You do the same centimeter thing a bit later again. There I am not sure if is in error because you show pictures with a better resolution.

I did mis-speak there indeed, Landsat is 30m resolution, not 30cm So the visualisation is correct, but I got it wrong

@@MaxLenormand You still made a very informative video! You tried metric imperial verbal full spectrum information, that's a huge task, things can go wrong easy. Especially if the script has a 30cm resolution two lines further down.

I got it wrong, too. A cm is one hundredth of a meter a mm a thousandth not a tenth (what i wrote)' that would be a decimeter. A kilometer still is a thousand meter. 5280 feet in a mile.

@@sebastiank1714 Yep I got mixed up a bit too much there, but that’s a good learning for what to pay extra attention to next time :)

Allegedly, Soviet satellites were capable of reading the name tape on a uniform.

Probably not, I worked with KH 11 imagery in the 1980s and the best I ever saw there was a shipping label that said “fragile”in characters about 3 inches high . And I know our cameras were better than theirs.

@@larrybell726 When I was in the Air Force there was a rumor going around that an airman had flipped off a Soviet satellite - Naturally they wanted an apology and were dumb enough to provide photographic proof of the misdeed. Yes, it does sound rather preposterous but I wouldn't put it past the Soviets to launch a Hubble-type satellite and aim it at points of interest on the ground.
