If you want to understand more of the basics of SAR I also made a video about this no my other channel: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zMsCyEAOrh0.htmlsi=NYCE8ujsgE3PgW8_

Was very fortunate to have Iain as a lecturer in Earth Observation at the University of Edinburgh. His passion for the subject is infectious.

I can imagine! I've learned from him through his books & courses, I do say I'm a bit jealous not having seen any of his lectures!

I love hearing the stories about the letters Ian sent off and got responses to, encouraging him to continue to pursue his interests. I think we often underestimate the importance of these efforts at these institutions.

i'm over the moon with the food analogy! having worked at a remote sensing company we literally named our code base the 'kitchen'. ❤

Can SAR penetrate tree leaves to measure ground? If so it might me more useful than lidar to find those lost ancient cities in the Amazon jungle.
@armando517
@armando517 Год назад
Depends on the band wavelength used. Longer wavelength (L-band) penetrates through canopy, but other shorter wavelength bands do not. My understanding is that LIDAR is preferred for archeological applications because of its higher resolution. Fusing SAR and LIDAR has been done in the past though.
@mindsbehindmaps
@mindsbehindmaps Год назад
Armando answered most of it, the resolution is a lot higher with LiDAR that being said you can cover a lot more ground with SAR Here’s what I found after a quick search that might be of interest: www.researchgate.net/publication/236731001_Satellite_Synthetic_Aperture_Radar_in_Archaeology_and_Cultural_Landscape_An_Overview

Replies below address this topic. Just to add that the ESA BIOMASs mission will be at P-band (due to launch soon) and that will penetrate through most forest canopies. If you know where you need to look, then lidar has best resolution. If you are not sure where to look, then SAR offers that wide coverage to allow discovery.

Great interview, congratulations. I particularly like it's less than 2 hours. I don't think I would work on technology with military use. I understand the logic - you need money to develop it, the military has money. But still, I wouldn't. Way too much ethical implications for me to deal with. I guess this is why I do theoretical stuff.
@mindsbehindmaps
@mindsbehindmaps Год назад
And that's fair enough! Iain's point is more around the need to be aware of the history and funding of most commercial SAR today. Hopefully these conversation help people then make whatever decisions they want, but in a more informed manner

Yeh. I avoid the military stuff too. But you have to know it’s there.

what he says about graduates not being hired as experts but as software engineers is so true! you think you will be making maps and doing image analysis. but really, you are just programming all day long
