This is an important video for most golfers I’d say. People try to square it far too late and there’s not enough time which is why we see 90% of golfers hitting the same weak slice. It’s so important to start closing the face WAY earlier in “transition” than most would think.

The mistake most golfers make is trying to steer face square to target. The real goal should be to keep it aligned square to the swing arc then put the ball on the ground where the face will come square to target at the point the ball releases off the face, what practice swing reveal. If you can’t take three full practice swings and see the club strike the ground in exactly the same place - near the middle of the ball -why would you expect it to strike the ball correctly without a practice swing and visualizing where it hits and face is square to target?

I totally agree and have benefited so much from Eric's videos this season on this aspect of the swing. I'm 62 and my index has been as low as 3.5 and it has just been going up this year because i was back to hitting weak shots to the right as a result of hitting with a glancing blow. My instructor has always focused on my grip, which is admittedly a bit weak, but even with a strong grip if you don't either flex the right wrist or bow the left wrist, you will never square up the club face. No instructor has ever explained this to me so clearly before. Eric's videos are pure gold!

@@kingofalldashcams7380 I was referring to coming down through impact. What I observe a lot of unschooled beginners do is drop the club down behind the ball and then sweep it straight down the target line steering face to target. What is most instructive in adopting Hogan’s ‘waggle’ is it makes one realize how much the waggle action of the wrist change the angle of toe and face from the time the shaft is horizontal to impact and there is no need to try to steer it straight if one used the Vardon style grip properly which big part of what makes it possible for the club to square itself to the swing arc. The observation of how toe bias affects how face orients in the swing is what inspired Karsten Solhiem to invent the high MOI putter and irons used today. He had observed the Bullseye putter he had being using was so toe heavy it twisted open / in his hands in the backstroke and \ closed through impact resulting in pulled-left misses. It is important to note that back then most used inside-to-square strokes like chipping stroke. The heel-toe balance of an Anser style putter causes it to hand at 40-45° angle when balance on a finger - it varies by model - which helps it stay square to an inside-square putting stroke. His PING EYE irons used the same high MOI principle to help a golf keep the face square to swing arc in the takeaway and again when it swings down and squares at impact. You are less likely to snap-hook with a high MOI ‘Game Improvement’ iron than a low MOI blade which has more toe bias. Pros were slow to adopt higher MOI cavity back irons because the toe bias of a blade lets you feel from how the toe of club is trying to twist around the shaft in the hands where the toe is pointing - situational awareness of face angle. By comparison higher MOI clubs have less feel but will come back square to target at impact more consistently. That’s part of why they are more ‘forgiving’ in addition to how higher MOI reduces face deflection from miss-hits on the face. With today’s hollow polymer filled irons with plug in toe weight we can get the ego satisfaction of swinging a “BLADE” but with the forgiveness of a set of high MOI starter clubs 🤣 I’ve gone the other direction. I played with PING Eye2 for many years then switched to S57 but recently found a set of circa 2000 Mizuno I-Zoid irons for $120 playing and shaping shots with.

Following a recent case of “Shank-itus” which arrived from nowhere, I experimented with slightly closing the face at setup, allied to a limited and slow backswing and another EC tip (slight right foot back) I have found both the consistency and distance that I have never previously had. This has promoted a H/cap fall from 18 to 12. Top instruction.

Great video. I've been only playing for 5 months and was taught to not to use my wrists and just trust my full rotation during the whole swing. At times I've hit it well when I rotate properly but as a beginner golfer I haven't found that consistency during my follow through so at times that makes me hit a slice with my irons. I got the same tip of your video from another coach a couple days ago and it has helped me immediately. Thanks!

Eric, I discovered just yesterday that I tend to focus on the leading edge of my irons and I need to be instead focusing on the sweet spot. This is especially true with my wedges. I practiced on doing this with a 58 degree and stopped thinking about my back swing. I turned my hands down more through impact and compressed the ball making sure to deloft my club face more. I began to hit these nice powerful shots. Hit that wedge 75 - 80 yards! I'm now one less club farther. Shorter back swing, more distance. Accuracy was excellent!

I concentrate me to my left knee. So it is difficult. Here I learn, the crunch is more important. The left knee goes more automatic out by the crunch on the right side. Thank you very much, Erich

I started trying to hit golf balls a little over a year ago. My most-frequent "good" shot is a push. (That is to say, the ones that aren't tops or fats or whiffs. Not a slice. I do slice, but less than 2% of the time.) I tried out your advice in this video on the range just now, and my good shots were mostly pull-draws. I mean, the balls were DRAWING. I've never seen myself hit a draw before. So, true, i was going crazy left, but it's a big step for me after going crazy right forever.

A simple way of understanding and visualizing what you suggest is “keep the face of the club looking down at the ball” i.e. square to the swing arc in the takeaway and last part of the downswing. Karsten Solheim of PING discovered a golf club face will find balance and align itself with toe and face square to the club’s swing arc line automatically if mass of the club head mass is moved around heel-to-toe until it does; the physics underlying the Anser putter, PING EYE irons and every high MOI cavity back design since then. A simple way to get the face consistently square at impact is to align the face by putting everything in- feet, spine bent, hips shifted laterally to target and open, shoulders just past parallel, hands over lead hip and pulled down in ulnar deviation, club in line straight with lead arm, etc. - with face aligned to target at the spot on ground the ball will release off the face. Go back and forth to from the “all parallel” conventional address start-of-swing position to impact a few times, waggling the club up so the shaft is horizontal. Moving between from impact - address - downswing shaft level waypoints slowly allows seeing, feeling, understanding intellectually and reflexive brain how everything needs to move. Setting up in the impact position and using a Vardon / Interlaced grip applied with pad of trail hand up over lead thumb will allow the club force to move hands and toe of club so face stays square to the swing line in the takeaway and as club comes down at impact more or less automatically. If starting from the impact position why should it not come back there, every time? Moe Norman said that a lot while hitting shot after shot to target because he learned intuitively to starting by first aligning as I suggest at impact before moving back to the start of swing address position The genius of the Vardon grip is how it maxes out extension / flexion / radial deviation / ulnar deviation of the wrist at key points in the swing very consistently IF the golfer lets the swing force move the wrists by using light grip pressure and not trying to steer the club head with the hands. The downswing forces are too great and it is a battle you can’t win! As explained above the physics of modern cavity back clubs will align themselves more or less square to the swing line automatically and you just need to put the ball where the face comes square to the target not at impact but just as the ball releases off the face. Because of the way the face moves aligns square to the swing arc the ball must be impacted at point slightly inside if center >+ (so aim there not dead + center on the ball-target line) and expect the face to rotate few degrees as the ball compresses and releases.

You mention pronation (or snap the wrist) & supination of the arms/wrist. It's difficult for us amateurs to time when to snap our wrists. One tip to consider is to consciously avoid pronation and simply release the hands/wrists. Let the arm flow thru hitting the ball and let the follow thru or momentum change the hand/wrists.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Год назад
Hey Mike! I hear ya..... But the reality is ALL golfers need to rotate the arms.....that is a measured fact through 3D. Supination is the palm up of the lead arm Pronation is the palm down on the trail arm This is a very natural motion when you swing the club forward....same as any other sport where you swing a stick. Its just a gradual motion....more detailed info on this may help understanding here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wCs7m-fOI-M.html&pp=ygUdRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGxlZnQgYXJtIHJvdGFpb24%3D

Eric - as a corollary to this, have u ever experimented with playing with a shut face at address and keeping it shut through back/trans/down and rotate through to square it through impact (kind of like Azinger used to do or Duval)? Not sure if you’d advise this or not. More along the lines of the pro you met with a few years ago outside of Carmel, CA. With the throw release where the face was set closed even before takeaway

This open face is the root of so many evils. It leads to flipping, poor contact, fat/thin shots. I kind of knew this, but in my mind my face was square. Finally realized NO, my clubface was still open even though I thought I was square. So I had to exaggerate closing the face (by rotating the knuckles down feel), which then puts me in square position. So right now I feel like I close the face a crazy amount. But it seems to be the right amount, because my shots are fairly straight. I am not missing to the left.

4:50 Amazing how different the release through the hitting is between Rahm and Rory. Rory has much more of a rolling release, which requires a lot of timing and precision. Rahm on the other hand has weak grip, max out on the bowed left wrist and just holds on through the hitting. In my opinion, that is the reason, why Rahm is more consistent.

Could be Jered----I would need to see to say for sure. If face is open that would mean grip too WEAK perhaps. Some of this may help fix that: This is a thorough discussion on it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fCW9W_lGQtM.html&pp=ygUhRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIG1vc3QgaW1wb3J0YW50IHNraWxs

Cogorno, does this match with what you and Mike Milanka talked about in your right arm and wrist video? Seems like you’re saying we should have more forearm rotation than he does.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 месяца назад
Hey! How much arm rotation you need......depends on how square/open/closed the club face is during the early downswing. Mike likes to see the face very square to the plane EARLY.....so more closed early.....means you dont need to close it as much later The less the door is open......the less you need to close it the more the door is open....the more you need to close it Hope this helps!

Does the right/trail wrist STAY bent like that through the entire swing? If so why have I never heard anyone talk about that. I think for myself I'm so worried about post impact/followthrough and what my hands and wrists need to so that it effects my backswing etc.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 17 дней назад
Hey Charles! In a normal swing, gradually release wrist angles through impact. Fully released angles at ~45° past impact👍 More details on TIMING of trail wrist extension/"bent back" to flexion: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Nwz6Yrr9SrI.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bnNsbWgUjFw.html Hope this helps!

@@CogornoGolf thank you so much for your reply, it seems the impact snap holds your wrist in the bent position all the way to the finish though? im thinking about online lessons as well.

Yeah that would just be a little too exaggerated (which is OK in beginning).... Having the glove logo 'face the target' at impact may depend on how you grip the club. If a player has a super strong grip - that glove logo wouldn't be facing the target - or else that club face will be extremely closed.
@CogornoGolf

Hey there! You still need to do the arm rotation but yes, it would require less with a super strong grip. More details on grip/club face/release/arm rotation patterns below: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8Cg2O8atmYY.html&pp=ygUZRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGdyaXAgcmVsZWFzZQ%3D%3D ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3QQUyRnRSJU.html&pp=ygUjRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHN3aW5nIHBhdHRlcm5zIHJlbGVhc2U%3D ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S776LyvM6Pc.html&pp=ygUXRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGdyaXAgd3Jpc3Q%3D

This is what's killing my game. Can't hit long irons or long hybrids because I have it in my head to swing harder. The harder I swing, the more open the club face. Gotta practice this.
@alienrenders

Just came back from the range. I tried aiming the back of my hand toward the clubhouse that was directly behind me. It works. I still have my hand cupped a bit on impact, but it's WAY better than it was. I still need to practice this to get more consistent hand placement. I was finally able to hit my 7 and 6 iron properly (I use 5h after that). But now all my clubs go 10 to 30 yards further. Sounds good, but I rather liked knowing my distances. If I can get this down, it'd be great. The sound it makes when you hit the ball like this is really impressive too. You can hear the compression. It's rather satisfying. Like I said, need more practice though. I also like the tip from another video to bring the arms straight down from the top. It helps to not cup the hands. Also gives you more speed at the bottom. And no way are you going over the top doing this. You call this "early transition" in this video.

Yes....same for driver. Always trying to get the leading edge of the club parallel to back line........ so.... Since you start standing taller with driver the face will be LESS tilted down....but still tilted down SOME. Parallel to back line is the key checkpoint you want to hit

Great video. The only thing missing is an explanation of why the flex in the lead wrist needs to increase from its initial position. At the start of the golf swing, the club is outside the hands and the club face is set square to the ball and the target. With a neutral grip the lead wrist is slightly extended (cupped) If the club is taken to parallel at the start of the back swing and the relationship between the hands and the club maintained, at parallel, the club head will be outside the hands and the face will be on a path, which if reversed, would result in the club face approaching the ball on a straight line, neither in to out or out to in, and square to the ball and and target. The lead wrist would still be slightly extended and there would be no need to add flexion to the lead wrist. The need to increase the flex in the lead wrist at the top of the back swing or during the downswing stems from the change of the position of the hands relative to the club head and the movement of body's center mass toward the target and away from the target line. In the downswing, when the shaft is parallel, the club head is not in front of the hands as it was at parallel in the back swing. Dropping the hands hands at the start of the downswing brings the hands lower and closer to the body relative to where they were at the beginning of the swing. During the downswing the body's center of mass moves linearly toward the target and away from the target line changing the position of the hands at impact relative to their initial position. The amount of flex in the lead wrist as the club approaches the ball has to be greater than the amount of flex in the lead wrist at the start of the swing and the take away because of the change in position of the hands relative to the club. The alternative is to time the supination of the lead wrist and the pronation of the trail wrist to square the face to target. As Brooks Koepka says, "set the wrist and let it rip."

QUESTION.....Jack Nicklaus once said in an interview, I'm paraphrasing. It's better to have a closed club face on the downswing that an open one. If it's closed it's easier to hold the face off at impact rather that trying to square it and or flip at the bottom. Eric do you agree with that?
