Hellacious story, Mr Avery! Your instincts saved you from a much worse fate. We have to treat everyone on the road like they're out to get us, because it only takes one. And the person who did that to you is the lowest of life. By relating the story, it can help others stay alert for crazies out there. Blessings!

As a retired trucker I am so sorry that so called truckers today don't give a rats ass about people. As a fellow biker I am glad you survived! As a certain type of teacher I gotta say that it is in the darkest of times that we cry out to Jesus for help. As you said, the cop and fire rescue were amazed that you survived. I trust you never forget who it was that was there for you in your darkest moment. Maybe, just maybe, I will be fortunate enough to see you and get a chance to sit down and have a beer with you in Sturgis this year. I will be riding from Alabama up. I wish you all the best brother.

I'm glad you survived to tell the story. My boyfriend's dad was t-boned by a man in his 80's and didn't survive. It threw him 120 yards. I had a bad feeling that morning that I couldn't shake. Around noon the feeling subsided. That was about the time of the accident. I left to do some errands, but came back to the house because I knew something was wrong. The man lied and said he didn't have his headlight on and he didn't see him. Somehow they found out that the light had been on. I remember praying constantly for him to live, but he was too beat up. He loved riding that bike. The last thing he did was doing something he loved. He is missed. How is Vee doing? Take care you guys. :)

Val Avery Thank you. So glad to hear you are doing better. :) Those stomach injections would stink to do. Shortness of breath is scary. How is the kitty you took to the vet? If there was an update, I must have missed it. Happy New Year! Hope it's a good one for both of you.

AWESOME! Glad you are ok! It puts a whole new meaning to the phrase "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger"! Kansas City I-29 a guy was next to the highway frantically waving his arms. I stopped, clearly something was wrong. He did something similar on his Night Train, +/- 3:00am, off the road, down the embankment, over the gullys, through the weeds. He knew he at least had broken ribs and a broken collarbone. I got his bike up off the ground, started it, at least the headlight worked, about everything else was tore up. I rode it around in the weeds etc and got it back up on the edge of the highway for him. (I took the long way around all the gullys) I helped him find most of his stuff that scattered all over. He was in a serious rush to hightail it out of there before cops came. (Guessing obvious reasons) He could barely stand up on his feet, I helped him get back on the bike, he said thanks many times, and took off like a bat outta hell. Every once in a while I wonder if he got where he was going. I keep a good thought he turned out ok.

Thanks for sharing the story; sure are lucky you're still here to tell it. You're also lucky you didn't have forward controls... that's one thing that bugs me about them - if I ever had to ride through ditches I wouldn't be able to stand up to save my life.

Great story man. I laid my suzuki GZ250 down on the highway this past summer when traffic stopped in the middle of a turn. I was wearin full gear aside from proper riding pants, but at least i was wearing jeans, and was lucky enough to walk away with just a little road rash on my knee. But unlike most people today i don't carry a cell phone. So, I lay my bike down, get up, make sure im not broken, then pick my bike up and push it across the lanes of traffic to the shoulder. I sat there for about 40 minutes tinkering with my bike, making sure it wouldn't fall apart on the rest of my ride. The handlebars had came back and smacked the tank, so i had to push them back up. When the bike went down it landed on the right side, pushing the back brake pedal out causing the spring to loose its loop around the cable connecting the pedal to the rest of the cable. So i had to push the brake pedal down to unjam it and use the pliers from my toolkit to hook the cable back up. Other then that the bike rode ok. The headlight was broken off hangin by wires, fender cracked and scratched. Exhuast pipe scraped up, speedometer cracked. And the back tire slightly knocked out of alignment. So anyway, i sat on the side of the highway for about 40 minutes, got on, kept riding, got off the highway as soon as possible and took backroads the rest of the way down. Now I'm ridin a 2015 Harley Street 500. I live in ohio too, what part of Ohio do you live in? It'd be pretty cool to do a ride with you if you're cool with that.

Funny I happened to be reading your story right now, because 50 years & 2 hours ago (Feb. 22, 1969, 2am EST), with me tired & not dressed for sub-freezing riding, I ran my bike straight off a Michigan expressway (M-59) at 80mph, just missing a guard rail as the road started curving, went down a couple hundred feet of sidewalk-wide paved drainage ditch that was lined up perfectly with my trajectory, went over two 6-foot embankments, and partially regained my senses sitting in two feet of icy water, aka the Clinton River. My seriously shattered right tibia & fibula didn't hurt much, even though my right foot was dangling on its Achilles tendon. Lots of blood. The icy water didn't feel cold. I was in shock. I hopped on one foot and two hands back up the embankment, climbed over the guardrail, wondering which way to try & hitch a ride in case someone drove by on that cold dark empty road. Some soul who I've always wanted to thank must have seen me go off the road, and went to a phone booth & made a call, because an ambulance soon appeared out of seeming nowhere. I'm leaving out some entertaining details, but here's the moral of the story: Hypothermia really does sneak up on you!

2:55 I agree with you, I was the tail gunner for a Motorcycle club. The thing that got to me was that on runs we only stopped to gas up and straight through to point "B" . Point "A" to point "B" that's it. There were so many interesting places along the road to see, to stop, to mingle but we just had to putt all the way to point B. I would always promise myself that I would repeat the journey by myself or with bros who felt as I did. I never did. It got old for me so I turned in my colors and left amiably. It seems to me that after spending some time in the club, your mindset changes, there is no vote, no consensus decisions, you do what you want, when you want when you leave. . It worked out for me, but I felt as you did and took the same action as you. I am glad you made it. There is a lot of superstitions about fixing old scooters after wrecking them. I am sure that you are well aware of them if you are old school as I. Later.

My son was riding my fxrs a bit to fast at night with some fog and threw in a few beers for good measure, and guess what a Amish buggy with no lantern or reflector. The O.S.P. said he was hauling ass. he went through the buggy discharged both passengers and killed the horse. Life Flight to Cleveland Clinic nearly bled out and survived. Another life lesson learned. another example that GODs in control. P.S. SENT PRAYERS for Vee,s speedy recovery, Hope all is well, Troy in Ohio....

You had quite a crash! Ain't that true, were always worried about our bike instead of our health.? That's the first thing I did when I had my crash. Your lucky no one took advantage of you. One time I took my mother out to look at all the leaves that were turning colors. This was a nice park too, on top of a big hill. My mother heard some bikers coming up the road, she said what are we going to do, it turned about it was a group of christian guys and girls, stopped by and talked to us. Here I was a biker myself and so does my brothers. My mother thought all bikers were bad except her kids? See it turned out great no problems, just help,My mother and her stereo types? Not every person on a motorcycle is bad, most are just out for some sun and fun.Enjoy your time riding!

I wouldn’t call the cops either that’s my last concern, you can’t do nothing about broken ribs besides wait it out, but I’m just different I don’t like hospitals either I can fix myself up I learned that stuff so I don’t need a hospital cost too much and I own my bike so I only got liability the insurance company isn’t going to help me, I’m not trying to be mean its just what I believe, my old buddy wreck my car over a three foot ditch and we got it out ourselves cause if we would of called somebody I would of gotten into a lot of trouble cause of having alcohol and drugs under age haha, hey we got the car working and took it home not bad for some kids

You called on Jesus and HE was there... Now how cool is that!!! GOD'S promises are true. God said that He'll NEVRE leave you or forsake you... He said IF you call on ME/God He'll answer... If God see every sparrow when it falls, then I'm confident He see when one of HIS kids hit the dirt. especially a biker, Because God is so VERY fond of bikers that call on him... I know we all have our major CRASH stories. The ones of us that are telling our stories no matter how bad they were. God blessed us and lived to tell the story... 4 wheelers take us out every day and it never a pretty site... I praise God that HE gave you enough wits about yourself to get yourself up out of that ditch. Otherwise who knows if and when they would have found you... Most of us are a tough breed, but with God's help HE makes us tougher... Great story with a painful happy ending... How is your lovely wife doing??? Be blessed... BBE..
