can we just point out how awesome it is that he said it’s okay as he was spinning out. optimism in the midst of immediate danger. not a better way to take a crash, respect sir.
I wouldn't say it was optimism, really as he said, trying to reassure himself... you should try to not control yourself, but know that you will be alive when you end up in the barrier, that the car is just a car and its fixable or replaceable... life is a huge grey zone, no true black or white...
This was a rough day for the both of us (I was the 07 Sti that hit seconds after you). BUT, seeing your in car footage vs ours makes me feel like a sissy. Glad we both made it to the next event!
@@route222FAQ lol my notification said someone subscribed.. i was like no way. my contents are too boring to get a sub.. and of course !!! it wasn't even for me LMAO
The frame isn't damaged neither suspension which i am greatful for but what i am the most greatful for is that he is okay and that's what matters the most.
Since the frame isnt damaged nor the suspension, he just needs a new fender, bumper probably a new door aswell and some fixing on the rear fender and that should be it, just panel damage
john martin maybe a split second of “YES I broke the record!” Is a split second not concentrating on the line and the car. I’m not saying that’s what happened, just maybe. When I first got into Riding motorcycles, I waved at a bike in the opposite lane while riding in the mountains and missed a braking point by a split second and it almost cost me my life.
This video had me on the edge of my seat, it’s unfortunate that you crashed but it happens to the best of them. As long as you are okay that’s all that matters, you can take it as a learning moment.
It was the very precise placement of background music, narration, then lack of narration/music to build suspense. Typical movie tactics. Every RU-vidr these days is like a movie director.
On an old JDM Option video, I heard the coolest saying that holds true - a driver was asked why he crashed and he simply responded with - "Hey, even Monkies fall from trees"...... The best of the best crash, and as long as it's on the TRACK (not the street) you should feel zero shame, proud even!!! Proud, because you held laps like a champ and pushed it to the limits as you should.
Yup, leave the heavy celebration until you are done.. He took that corner hard right after celebrating and it cost him big time. Even a second of lapsed concentration on the track can kill you.
@@john-martin Im not sure why you would say something like that.. You dont even know me. You are literally making an outlandish assumption based on zero information from a YT comment. The reason I made the comment is directly because this happened to me before and I have experience with this exact scenario. Breaking concentration for a brief second and crashing. It happens. I learned, and I hope he will as well. He was lucky not to be injured. I broke my arm and my leg and fractured a rib. I wasnt so lucky. And like I said, I have been racing for almost 30 years now since I was 14 years old and my father took me out to learn in his 89' 911 Turbo.. I fell in love with the track and racing since.
This is why every racer knows not to celebrate too early. Biggest lesson learned here and for others that will race and read this comment. Celebrate when your speed is 0mph/kph at the bay, no reason to get emotional when your car is going 100+. Emotions need to be at the bay and full attention on the track, plus never assume that the car will react the same way as it did the first time it took the turn, every second on the racetrack decreases the capability of the car as the brakes fade/tires wear out/fluids heat up/human error increases with increased consistent stress. Glad youre a ok, and glad nothing major occurred than a few fender bends, but lesson needs to learned without anything serious thankfully.
I didn't even know you were here, let alone, ended up going into the tire wall. Same day Sunday, I was on the Motorplex for an autox event. But crashing happens to the best of us and you really don't have to be ashamed of it. I even went off track one time at Blackhawk Farms, luckily didn't hit anything, but everyone still came up to me to see if I alright. The grassroots motorsport scene just feels like you're a huge part of a car obsessed family. It's truly an awesome scene and I'm glad to be apart of it.
“....you never count you’re money, when you’re sittin at the table...”. Man, great job on the record! Tough luck on the first corner. Seems like you and the car are getting really fast. Keep up the good work, and some of the best content on RU-vid!
A wise man's words flashed through my mind as I was in a similar situation at NJMP, sliding off track in my '04 GTO. Those words, "Only surefire way to find the limit is looking back at it" Glad you and the Civic survived.
I love the immediacy of your reaction "its okay its okay...." you were cool and calm despite the high of the new time - while spinning. Im not sure I would have the same composure
Congrats on that tracks fwd record. I think there’s something off on your power, if that’s a stock geared si transmission you are way too slow rowing through the gears. I’m sure my all motor EK has less power than you but I rip through the gears way faster, and I’m going to 9400rpm. Something is off here, do you know what your car traps at in the 1/4 mile?
It makes 268whp. I think what isn't conveyed is how fast this track is. I spent almost the whole time between 4th and 5th gear here which is why it takes longer to get through the gears, my top speed at this track was around 139mph.
@@GearsandGasoline would you ever consider having custom gear sets? You could have a different trans on the trailer for every track, or just figure it out ahead of time and shop up ready to go
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS I know this is a nearly completely different question to what you're talking about, but how hard is it to swap out a gearset in a decently modern 6-speed?
@@LazerLord10 its pretty much the same as any of the older honda 5spd stuff. And not too different from any other manual trans. The cool thing about hondas is there are a few different oe transmissions you can pull parts from and the aftermarket does make custom ratios. I believe for the K series the one thing that will cost more is a second gear change, also needs a new mainshaft. What Ben could do here is space 1-2 or even 1-3 a little further apart and tighten up 4-6. Would probably in most situations, everything short of a top speed run.
So glad you’re okay, Once the car is fixed you gotta get a mid/rear under brace and anti roll bar, the rear tire pointing towards the direction you turn at is lifting off the ground, keeping it on the ground will cause you to have more grip and Confidence
I did the same thing on US 460 west heading towards bedford VA in my Z3. Glad to see your okay man, I Hit some salt changing lanes, oversteered, corrected it but the rear driver clipped the grass and sent me spinning the other way across the median and across oncoming traffic. No one was hurt and the car is completely okay other than some slight bushing wear in the rear.
All the best man like you said if you're racing whether learning at HPDE or at the highest tiers crashing is a part of the package. Glad you're ok and motivated to fix it and move on!
when youre pushing a car at its limit as hard as you can, eventually youll push past that limit, it happens to everyone man. Its just metal at the end of the day, as long as youre ok the car can be fixed
I dont think he pushed it past the limit, I think he broke concentration celebrating too early and it cost him. You cannot see how he took that turn, but to me, it seems he misread the turn.. You can see it in his face right after he celebrates, he gets back on the wheel and seems concerned and then loses it.
Ben man you gave it all you could do that day and in the end you broke the record that cost you some heartache. At the end of it all your alive to rebuild me get better. Glad your safe.you kicked ass man
Man I’ve been following you and ths car since the 7000 mile road trip. My heart sank when I saw this, but I’m glad you’re OK and I’m glad the car is fixable. Congratulations on beating the lap record your first time out that’s awesome.
@@BarakaGitari no the turn is fine, its about the driver (anyone not this dude) not realizing how the angle changes and what speed and line to drive and sometimes trying to chase numbers without proper time on the track. do a few days of practice then chase the times, don't do it on the 2nd day youre on the track.
Great job capturing the highs and lows of time attack and the comradery of Gridlife!!!! Congrats on breaking the record during your first time at the track in your first season of time attack!!!
Very glad to see you’re alright. I could feel your adrenaline as you passed the line and got the FWD record! Congrats!! Sorry to see Mia damaged but happy to hear it’s mostly cosmetic. Keep at it!
This is an unfortunate demonstration of celebrating too soon. But I really appreciate the candid nature of this guy/channel. I am really looking forward to the next event when it's repaired and making more power. Thanks for the highs and the lows bruh. Stay safe.
Very well filmed as always. This triggered some memories from an accident I had. Begun to spin and had no control so I just sat there waiting for it to finish and all be "okay". I'm glad that your civic is repairable.
Dude I felt so uneasy watching this, just waiting for it to happen. Good to hear your okay! Just need to fix Mia up to become more of a monster! Mia the Monster 😈
@@jameeboo No Ik that, but I wanted to see what had happened and how he crashed his car. Plus I wanted to see more gridlife because it’s been a while since the last gridlife video. I know he crashed, I saw the damage a couple of months ago on Instagram.
You’re doing great, but Ben, please don’t celebrate like that while on track. I know it’s good for the RU-vid views, but that celebration, that lapse of concentration is what caused you to crash. I’ve shaken my head at other RU-vidrs doing it, and I was honestly doing it when you did it... and then you went off. I think you’re already pushing yourself very hard in your first year of competing. I personally think you’re focussing too much on car mods, and not enough on driver mods. I think the car has more power and speed than you’re comfortable with. I really don’t mean to bring you down. I say this out of concern. And I also want to make you aware that as a popular RU-vid channel, you’re an influence to a lot of people. My advice as a race car driver to everyone starting out: take a car, do safety and suspension mods, but don’t touch the power. Learn to drive that car to the limit comfortably, and then think about power mods. You don’t need to win prizes or break records in your first year of competing.
Couldn't agree more. That's great candid feedback. (Remember, feedback is a gift!) It's no joke, celebrate when you get into the pit safely and park in one piece and take a deep breath (even if it's just a personal win not a track record :)). It will seem like common sense later. Distraction is one of your worst enemies on the track. I'm guessing I'm probably only 7-10 years older than you Ben and I'm certainly not a race car driver by any means. However, it's just enough age to see the faults watching you compete this season. Winning should be a secondary award to getting out there and safely and cleanly pushing yourself to a new limit. If anything, that personal accomplishment (especially without breakage) means way more than the trophy or recognition. Ben you are modest and down to earth, but this should be an opportunity to grow and mature even further (Look up the farmer and the horse story). You've been overly focusing on winning, remember the car hobby is a marathon not a sprint. My first ever autocross event 15 years ago taught me one thing - the oldest grey haired guy was the smoothest and fastest at the event no matter what car he got in! Take it slow and take your time honing your actual skill, don't waste your time on a bunch of go faster mods that just upset the car forcing you to relearn how to drive it every time. It will be fleeting because in the end unless you are at a pro driver level competing bumper to bumper, it's just for fun and your own happiness.
Well no sacrifice no victory... Glad youre okay and the civic not that to much damage. Love it how you show youre fighting spirit on braking the record
Walking into a dangerous situation makes you a man. But walking into a dangerous situation fearing for your life knowing the outcome will be horrible, yet convincing yourself it'll be okay is what makes you a legend.
Love how positive you are about the crash. the car would be totaled by insurance standards. If you can find OEM pieces and swap the pieces your self, you should bring her back to life
Ive taken my mustang out on road America in the wet for my first track day. It is truly terrifying but fun as hell at the same time. Seeing you civic in this video motivates me to put a roll cage into it
Legit the words I used when My Subaru cashed into a dich because of black ice and rolled a few times laying on its side "its okay its okay" be safe out there man love the car and love the sport keep the passion for driving and make sure you take care of yourself too.
Good job man on the record! At least you got that THEN vibe checked by the tire wall instead of the other way around. It all evens out, keeps you humble, and you can throw a new fendy on before the next event! Keep setting those records!
I'm happy you are ok a car can be replaced not your life... I'm stoked that you broke the front wheel drive record once the car gets fixed you just got to keep on making that record longer and harder for the next person to bet it... GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING!!!
YO!!! No Shame at all!!! You got to Road America, and took everything it had to teach ya. You got the Class record, and a never forgotten story! Congratulations! Awesome Job!
Well hindsight is 20/20 always, you need to make actual goals for yourself that are not only realistic but also challenging for you as a goal. You never want to try and go for time when you are visiting a track for the first time, it’s called a shakedown for a reason. You need to be comfortable and have to constantly know what turns are coming up so you don’t make any mistakes that crescendo from bad habits. I just wanna see you be safe and have fun doing it, don’t feel bad for taking longer to get faster, you don’t have to prove anything. This should just be taken as an example of how hard it is to drive consistent at such a fast pace, we’re glad ur alright.
Have a tip for you. In this situation if you let the car spin on porpouse, the car breaks as it spins or you save it with a 360, but you did what you were able to do. Great work, you set the record and good luck with the car🙂
Glad you were okay!, this gives you more time to re-think about other parts you might wanna use for the Ek9 such as adding canards for more downforce, etc.
I'm so glad your alright. And that is no where near the amount of damage that could have happened if you spun in the rain. New fender, paint and some other small things and she'll be looking good as new
I'm glad you're Ok. Boy that Track was scary as hell but you handled it like a champ. Congratulations on breaking the front wheel drive track record 🎉.
There are two kinds of racing drivers; Those who have crashed, and those yet to crash😉 Its part of racing and NOTHING to be ashamed of. It just means you were pushing - HARD, and if anything, it garners you MORE respect😁👍👍
If I learned anything at Summit Point this past year is that tire walls are fantastic at absorbing impact and therefore protecting your car. Looking forward to the rebuild!
I am glad you are OK. The car can be fixed. Well done on the record. Don't go for top speed, tune the suspension for cornering. You may want to soften the suspension a tiny bit to absorb some of the bumps on the track/ ripple strip. this will keep the tyre in contact with the road.
My favorite track. Granted I live 5 minutes from there but still think it's one of the best tracks there is. Something to consider, turn 7 leans to the outside slightly as well. Its deceptively sharp
No worries man. You broke the record and the civic is still in really good shape. Hope you get it fixed soon. Looking forward to see it on the next event!
So Glad your okay! lots of racing cliches about pushing it and crashing. But bottom line, a fender, and bumper are a small price to pay for a record at Road Atlanta! Great job!
No the beautiful ek9 replica civic type r nooooo such a jdm icon pls fix just I want you to start racing again and just want to here my vtec from the bullet proof k24 take ur time I’m just happy ur safe dude !!!! ❤️❤️👍👍👌
Glad you're okay little Ben. Shunts are a part of going at the limit and reaching for a higher limit - and nothing makes race car drivers happier working on getting to a higher limit. rock on!!
For such a fast track, it's fortunate that it's mostly just cosmetic damage. Bodywork and maybe confidence damaged a little, but both will be repaired over time :) Glad Ben's not hurt though, safety is always #1
Don't be too hard on yourself. I crashed my 240sx @ Road Atlanta turn 1 doing about 75mph back in April 2018. From 8:33-9:07 I know Exactly how you felt. Bought a new shell & spent about 3 months swapping everything over. (Subframe for subframe swap 1jz w/R154) Good news is your physically Ok. broke the FWD record!! & you have the motivation to fix it & get back out there!
First off, glad to see your ok. Always a scary moment. Cars are always replaceable. You are not. Congrats on the FWD Record. That's an amazing achievement. I've been truly enjoying watching your progress through GRIDLIFE and gives me inspiration to continue to chase my own dreams of competing. So thank you. I hope you have a wonder Christmas season.
The more I hear you guys talk about time attack and Grid Life the more I want to get my Miata going and get involved. Seems like an awesome community of people.
this is by far one of the highest quality automotive youtube channels out there with amazing cinematography and extremely engaging content. I also love the fact that the builds on this channel aren't so over the top that it keeps it very relatable instead of doing a 100k+ clout builds like many other channels. Keep up the awesome content.
When you were saying it's okay it's okay when you were spinning I could feel the fear and sadness in your voice that alone is enough to make me wanna cry for you
I loved the composure during the whole incident telling your self that is was gonna be okay was super brave and courageous IMO good luck at the next one
Don’t get discouraged man, you got that wreck out of your system and you were killing it with lap times! Slap a new fender on and go out and get an even better time next time!
Damn that sucks, couldn't even imagine what it feels like to crash something you put so much time into. At least your alright and it wasn't some insanely destructive damage and it can be fixed. Glad your alright and the car isn't a full loss
I felt the highs and lows in the video. I am happy you are fine. Now its gives a reason for a video on how to replace the damages. Keep up the content.
Welcome to the "I crashed my car on Gears and Gasoline" club. As James Houghton said in the 2018 Road Atlanta video, if you never make a mistake you're not trying hard enough. Keep your head up, you've made huge strides in a short amount of time.
