(And yes, the panic was 100% real. I have gotten jumpscared by my own entity so many times....it's ridiculous)

I love how the Cave Dweller basically kicked off a new minecraft creepypasta/horror mod era. I think this one is definitely a strong contender for the horror mob title too. This plus Cave Dweller and Man From the Fog are probably the best designed so far.

im really enjoying this creepypasta/horror era. there was such a lack for fun and cool horror mods that arent just scary looking mobs that have basic ai or other spooky things. These really bump up the fear and paranoia factor by a lot and im loving it

@kataoncrack1629 The more complicated AI behavior is definitely the selling point of the new horror mod era. It's no longer about just making a one hit murder monster but about how it responds to the player and changes the gameplay.

It would be absolutely horrifying if it could bend over to watch you through doors and windows. I also love how it's dead silent and doesn't even move until it attacks you.

this is a pretty good suggestion, imagine it purposefully staying a few more seconds in idle while you're watching him while a sound effect of a fast beating heart plays, then everything goes quiet and he goes after you

I think maybe to amplify the creepiness factor it could maybe have a red or white dot in its eye once it does this (along with either moving out of sight or turning invisible once you turn around)

Weird idea that came to my mind when you said “how can you make a sheep scary?” A mob that just randomly hursts out of other mobs, like a sheep thats just walking closer and closer to you and then a monster jumps out of it.

The sheep just follows you. Naturally you'd decide to kill it. It dies but then a few days later it comes back. Then it walks up to you then it violently starts shaking.two hands emerge from the sheep's back and rip it open to reveal the monter within.

You should try Scape and Run: Parasites. It does something very similar to that so you can't trust any passive mobs

Reminds me of one of my old worlds, where the few chunks around my base were always absolutely swarming with sheep. I had even made up my own headcanon about the sheep being some sort of cosmic hivemind lol

Making it completely immune to damage is just stupid, the mob isnt really scary. Looks wise it looks creepy. The “very loud stinger” is the reason why people get scared by the mob. But thats just a jumpscare, no built up tension. It just plays the loud sound, you jump because its a random loud sound. Run because you cant damage it, and then it plays that “chase music” that persists even after you have died or escaped. The chase music is also ear piercing loud too. Loud doesn’t equal scary. Its like a gmod png jump-scare. You have good modeling skills, you just need to build up tension. Not just have him look at you from like 30 blocks away, him appear, play a 900 decibel sound and a 10000 decibel chase theme. As you run and cant damage him in any way shape or form. This is meant for constructive criticism not to just bully the creator. Its a good mod, you just need to improve the mob.

Interesting. I can see what your saying, but in my opinion there is a ton of built up tension. You are always terrified, looking around and stopping so that you listen to see if he is near you. You are always seeing things out of the corner of your eye and start thinking that you are tweaking. And when you hear footsteps getting closer, that is very scary. And just walking around and then seeing a stripped tree just makes you incredibly paranoid of that entire area. I made him so that he is scary to me. Idk, other people might be less scared or more scared.

This is an excellent mod; this one's definitely going to be a good one for modpacks, and the creature being able to hang from the ceiling is really unique, and the slenderman aspect of it where the creature disappears and will reappear closer is really neat. Overall, pretty cool mod. I'm definitely going to be adding this to my singleplayer modpack.

I'd like to suggest some ideas: Instead of full invulnerability (to avoid inevitable frustration), it has a very obscure weakness. • Something like Gold weapons as to how silver is to werewolves. • Or, speaking of weakness, maybe a weakness potion (which one of the ingredients is a Spider Eye) reminding the creature of its lack of eyes despite it being the one who watches (or just punch it with an Eye of Ender lol). TL;DR: Your mod really got my imagination going, so I'm just jotting some ideas here.

And maybe even then, perhaps it truly is impossible to kill, it's just that harming it with those weapons gives the creature a no spawn timer, like 30 minutes of respite from it hunting you or something. You might not be able to kill it entirely, but if you have the tools you can hold it off effectively *enough* to at least try to survive. This way it isn't as frustrating as fighting an unkillable wall but still maintains the sense that you can never truly overcome this monstrosity.

This is an amazing mob. Well done. You truly outdid yourself here. I do have a suggestion if you ever want to make an update to the mod. Since the thing stalks the player and the name “The man who watches”, it would be awesome if it inflicted a status effect called “Paranoia” where if the player is being stalked by the entity, it makes it impossible for the player to sleep. Every time the player tries to sleep while being stalked, it gives the message “you cannot rest now, he is watching…” I think it would make it even more scary. Just trying to sleep, then just getting that message and frantically looking out your windows, trying to spot it.

I'm not exactly a master at modding so there are a lot of things that I don't know how to do, but I will try because that idea is absolutely perfect!

I think this is definitely a good dweller design! Some ideas I have include... -The One Who Watches could appear to the player from afar (64 blocks or so away) if possible to stalk the player from afar. Once it disappears it could perhaps have a chance to just leave the player for some time and stalk them elsewhere. -The One Who Watches could perhaps only despawns when you aren't looking at him, as to make the disappearance feel more eerie -Perhaps when in caves it could also appear just behind corners to make it feel more like its stalking you? -Perhaps it could occur more frequently in more closed or darker areas, like within forests or caves or at sundown or when raining more frequently? -Maybe it could hunt less frequently, as I think it could sell the "stalker" type feel a bit more? -maybe when hunting it could spawn a bit farther away, like 8 blocks away as I think it just appearing right in front of you seems to dampen a bit of the horror -perhaps it could produce a distorted groan or growl similar to the roar it has? Its chase sequence actually reminded me of the bacteria entity from the backrooms found footage a bit, so perhaps it could produce a sound when its near but not in its chase sequence? -Maybe it could crawl and crouch similar to gargins cave dweller but could perhaps break fragile blocks like leaves and glass or open doors to get to you? -Perhaps a similar effect to the Wardens darkness could occur when you are looking at the One Who Watches? It would probably be toned down slightly but it could be interesting to see -This is a bit more complicated idea but maybe it could make redstone powered items randomly flicker on and off when it is nearby? It would probably be only if its very close and more frequent if its chasing but this could make attempts to make redstone lights and doors unreliable when being chased? Overall I think that these ideas combined with the existing entity could establish its themes as a more stalking, psychological dweller who fits its role very well.

@@pixelcoder I think that the corners thing and the redstone would probably take a lot of work to do, however I think that the crawling/crouching movement, chasing tweaks, darkness/like effect when looking at it and stalking mechanics could be a bit easier. For the darkness/like effect perhaps it could be a modified version of the existing darkness effect to warp the visuals, maybe make colors less saturated instead when looking at it? For most of the chasing and stalking mechanics like when the One Who Watches appears could be just some spawning tweaks, perhaps it appears more when its sunset or sundown, when raining or in certain biomes or in caves? If you can copy and modify how you made the One Who Watches ability to go invis when you look away to make it despawn only if you aren't looking at it during a chase only, I think that might work. Mind you, I don't code mods, so my knowledge is limited in that field.

I was thinking of a more like uneasy feeling, like it'll transform into nearby mob and essentially does the same thing here, where they'll just stare at you while being that mob. It makes you question your surrounding and paranoid of any creatures.

Im gonna be honest, this just seems like a jumpscare monster. It might be difficult, but I’d love to see something that tries to sneak up on you; actively avoiding your line-of-sight and taking paths around corners, while running away if you catch it in the act.

I think it would be funny if it where to, when entering chase after getting close to the player, to start crouched looking up at the player before leaping at them and chasing from there. Or better, stay behind a tree/block and only attack the player if they either are looking at it or have their back turned to it. Otherwise it has great potential and progress already, good job!

Yeah, a way to deal with it that doesn't involve having to sprint until it despawns would be a great step up. Maybe it could have some sort of attack timer, and you'd have to reset it by looking directly at its face?

Maybe you could make it so it has a high chance of despawning instead of entering chase mode, but still playing the chase mode noises for a couple of seconds, so that way you can make it seem like the thing dissapeared and is still chasing you. Even if you already know it does this, it can make the one who watches occasionally catch you off guard because you don't know if it's going to chase or pull a fake out, leading to situations where the player is running from a threat that was technically never there.

Good point. It does basically do that already. Because it can spawn and enter into chase mode and then instantly despawn. And I think it actually works better that way, because it appears so you start running but then it isn't even chasing you because it isn't even there.

Very nice mod! I think instead of whispering for its idle nearby sound, it should be some kind of heavy, raspy breathing sound since its mouth is always open like that. If the monster is supposed to stare at you at pretty much all times (if targeted), if you can get it's head to only turn at 05:04 to look at you instead of the normal way mobs tend to face you, I think it would make it even more unnerving. Of course, the whole body should probably turn like normal if you start moving behind it. An idea for possible future behavior expansions: For its ceiling crawl, if the player is within a certain range and they are below the creature, its breathing becomes more rapid before it pounces. But the pounce only happens if the player does not spot the monster within a very short time period or they walk directly under it. (check if center reticle passed over it with maybe a dead zone around it so it doesn't have to be so precise). This may allow it to setup some ambush scares in caves, under large/tall trees, and maybe even on builds. Pounce does not go immediately into chase and shouldn't kill unless player is already low on HP. Mainly an in your face type jumpscare that does a little damage, and maybe with one or more short status effects. Then it either scurries away/turn invis, or possibly despawns like it's normal behavior you already have.

i think making it go invisible and become visible again only IF it is not within line of sight of any players would be pretty damn horrifying. you could also have it do this if the player is in complete darkness (would be best experienced with shaders)

This monster is basically a ebay version of the cave dweller. Jumpscares are just not scary, even less when there’s no buildup to the jumpscare. Popping an invincible monster with no warning is no scary, it’s annoying. The cave dweller is so scary because you hear cave noise more and more often when you’re near him and you sometimes see it but it disappear. That’s what you call buildup.

You don't think seeing this thing really far away, and then having it disappear, or despawn completely, only to hunt you a different time is build up? Or just be walking around and see stripped wood in the forest, and you don't know if it is actually there or not. Or maybe you start hearing faint breathing near you. Or maybe you hear footsteps charging towards you? Oh well. Some things I guess are just scarier to some people then other people. I have tons of people telling me that mine is the scariest of them all, and then I have people like you that tell me it isn't very scary. 🤷

@@pixelcoder Having it pop right in your face sure will get you a reaction but it ends any kind of fear at least for me personnaly. A good example of a game that masters horror is iron lung. In this game, the jumpscare happens only at the end, letting you suffer the whole game. Also the fact that you dont see the monster makes this game 100% scarier than any monster you could imagine.

I absolutely love this! This may be my favourite one yet. I love the idea of a slender man like being The only thing I’d probably change is the name, ‘the one who watches sounds great as a horror title but I think the being should be called ‘the watcher’. Im a Nerd who watches old 80s Dr Who and in one of the stories there’s a being that’s almost completely white, covered in a feathery coat that adds nothing to the plot but he just watches… it’s so eerie, and it was called the watcher, so this is likely a bias for me but this mod made me think of it for the first time in years!

I'm personally really iffy on it being so loud. It's startling, but it quickly becomes obnoxious. It'd be nice if you could add some config options to mute the horror stingers and chase sounds, or an option to replace them with something more subtle.

The only thing that could make it a little more scary is that the Slow effect lasts like, two or three seconds less, to make it more like a "did I really saw it?". But it is also perfect as it is, because having it being still so long, in a certain way we dismiss it as a threat because we think it will only move if we get closer. Perfect for a surprise.

There have been a lot of “Cave Dweller” mods popping up lately for Minecraft. Which is great and scary but also a lot of them are pretty much the same thing, just different models that are more terrifying, with a small few various abilities. I loved your mod though. It was different. The model was hella creepy! Very scary man, it had me shitting myself. I love how it’s a more of a silent build up where you see him in the distance staring at you, just watching. Over time he moves closer and closer, setting up that unease, fear, dread. Then boom he attacks and that alone is horrifying. The audio is well made and mixed too. I love that he’s fast and does a good deal of damage so he does feel threatening. I also love how you added new things like he can sort of climb, swim, break trees, makes it more intense. The scariest thing is def him in the ceiling in a cave. Chilling. My only critic is after a while it can get stale and bland and boring when some time has passed. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still scary. But after about an hour or so it gets a tad bit annoying trying to avoid him. He needs some more additions. One guy mentioned that you could have him bend over to look in your window or door which would be unsettling. But he needs some more features. Him just chasing you and attacking and roaring is fun and creepy, but can get old. Maybe have him put things in your world too. No idea how hard that would be to code, but maybe he creates weird black stone structures like small towers or strange signs near your house. Maybe you can find blood on the ground from previous victims of the creature. I do like the idea that he can’t actually get into your physical house which is nice, it’s your safe haven. A neat add could be he possibly have awful animations. Like craning just neck all around with cracking sounds or you could find abandoned villages he went through t previously, which would add to eerieness. Other than that, awesome mod man!

That horror mod trend remind me of the "Next bot era" we had on Gmod a while ago, were a lot of scary nextbot were added to the game. It's even better in minecraft because here these are fully 3D model, with animation and all and not just some JPEG image chasing you.

This looks like a fantastic addition to the current collection of horror mobs thats been trending. If anything can be improved its probably some more work on the animations of the mob during the chase and when it appears at the start of the chase (especially how it was seen facing away from the player during one of its aggro moments.) Still a great mod.

Try adding more scary sounds and making it more intelligent so escaping it becomes almost impossible :) I wanna create my own mods too but I m just learning your mods gives me inspiration to make my own mod, BTW cant wait to see this mod in 1.20.1 so I can add it in my personal horror modpack

Just a suggestion, but i wonder if you could make a mob kinda like that, but it would slowly get closer to where you are. And it would then chase you to catch you. Once you where caught, you would have to give it something in your inventory as an offering to spare your life. Then perhaps it has a grading system to see if it's worth sparing your life, and will give you a second chance to give it something to spare you. Maybe you can make a sacrifice chamber or totem where you give something up to be spared a potential encounter. Have it chase the player for atleast 15 seconds, and chase up to 2 minutes. Spawns on the surface and in caves, but its hands glow, and then it has glowing particals when it notices you. It can take damage, but the more damage you deal, the greater the sacrificed item must be. It can be killed, but has 2x or 3x the health of an endermen. Is that a good idea or no? I think it would be cool to have something like that in there. Perhaps make it to where it might reward you an item for impressive feets like slaying one of these things by giving you back a previous item?

ay bro tysm, i made a modpack of my own with all the horror mods for forge and this was a blast to experience for a hardcore world:) the adrenaline paired with this felt truly like a horror game that led me to think 10 steps ahead before going to a cave, amazing mod, deserves more love, it took me a month but i managed to adapt to mostly every single horror mod out there including herobrine, i wanted to take the time to say my journey of 1 month since today i lost due to a mistake of my own, its an amazing experience although scary and may take many tries its def worth it for a creepy experience, from now on i always think twice even in vanilla before going to caves and always looking up, trauma worth it!

I gotta say, the concept for it is really really good. I like that it's something that's not just instantly in your face and that it's kinda subtle in the beginning. Now I do think that, in my personal opinion, it would be way scarier if he would kinda be even more subtle, like having a tendency to appear more behind cover if possible and the initial stalking phase was longer. The getting closer to the player is also good, but I think the big loud stinger and the scream during the chase sequence kinda take away from it a bit, I think it would work better if it would get behind you and only attack once you look at it. Hearing approaching footsteps and subtle breathing would also fit this better I think. But over all a pretty damn good job

Thanks! All of the other "dwellers" rely on the player looking at them so I didn't want to do that, because I wanted mine to stand out. I kind of liked the idea of him not relying on any player input, that way it actually seems like he is his own entity that doesn't care what the player does. Like if he is staring at you and you don't see him, that is on you. My thought process is that you have to always pay attention to your surroundings, listening and watching. So that is kinda of my thought process. Not correcting you or anything, just explaining why I did what I did. I do like the idea of making it spawn behind objects, but that would be incredibly difficult to do.

This inspired me to make my own. It's a mutulated/mutant frog creature that lives in swamps or those very chill glowberry biomes in caves. Mostly it likes to walk on 4 legs or when it's night time it will decide to walk on 2 legs to preserve energy. Those creatures surprisingly have a full on hibernation system so when theres like some swamps in some random biomes like a snowy taiga or ice spikes biomes and when you think it's summoned well you might meet them sleeping. The name of the mob is "Flippy" but according to scientific researcher wich is gonna be given to the player by finding a book in masions called "anomaly_1/1" or "Swampers".

I appreciate the horror mods, but I think minecraft should have more terror mods, where encounters are near zero, where you hear things in your world as an entity watches you. it's what I think of when I imagine herobrine. He just watches from the shadows, observing. Understand the true fear that comes with terror. Imagine adding a mod like this to a playthrough not knowing what it is, only to start seeing things watching from a distance, hearing noises from just around the corner, only for nothing to show up. then, randomly, after a few hours it attacks, just to disappear again. I hope someone sees this idea.

I think a spider-like entity would be cool. Here’s how i would see it working. Something you could compare to a baby zombie. small, nimble and most of all, fast. It would be a bit bigger than a silverfish, but a bit smaller than a baby zombie. It can crawl up walls and on the ceiling. It could break blocks and open doors, plus it could detect the player from far distances. Say around 30-40 blocks. Oh, and it spawns exclusively in strongholds.

Well not gonna lie, the jumpscare way and the sound effects are actually effective on scaring a person (first jumpscare got me). As a suggestion, you could make custom footstep sounds to make the scene even more adrenaline pomped. And those foot step sounds would not actually tell you if it's getting closer or not, so the player won't be ready for a good jumpscare. Keep up your good work! ( I should definitely make a episode with this mod lol )

Definitely think this is pretty neat! I like that it implements jumpscares pretty well for the most part in the sense you usually can expect it will eventually jumpscare you without it feeling cheap and still being scary. Also like you trying something different with its design even if I’m not the biggest fan of it I can still appreciate it nonetheless. Lastly I have to commend the sound design as it is genuinely peak. However if I could give constructive criticism I think the reason stuff like the warden and cave dweller work so well in creating horror is because they are restricted to a specific area so prolongs the amount of terror you experience from them for a longer period of time before you become bored of them. I think my main issue with this mod is that it doesn’t do that and I think after an hour or so the monster loses steam in creating constant horror because it becomes expected and predictable. It doesn’t help that it can just randomly appear in your face at times with no warning and blare loud sounds. I think if you ever were to update the mod or create more horror mods to consider making the creature have less of a overall presence to keep more of the suspense and horror. But I say that with no ill will, this genuinely does have some pretty good qualities and I’m excited to see what you might do in the future.

If I could suggest how I might fix it is maybe make it have its own biome in the overworld, nether, or the end, that it only exists within. Or you could make it so it responds to certain triggers like interacting/holding a cursed item, or desecrating a shrine in its honor. If you decide to do any of the latter I’d add some way to ward it off and end it’s curse placed upon you. Regardless though I hope my criticism and or suggestions helps you at all in any of your future projects :3

What you should do is add more creatures that each do something different, like for example, the one who watches will only attack if provoked. I also think you should give it another redesign to match a certain element of the game. I think mycelium would work best. You could then have a warden like creature that is worse than the warden, and evolved creeper, some kind of huge silverfish, the list could go on! the overall idea is that there are creatures that are meant to be run from, and not killed or fought. Another idea I have is somekind of execution animation? the one who watches could either gut you or eat you piece by piece.

I d e a A Sea Dweller, The Abbysal Resider. You Would be Able to upgrade a boat Into a submarine with Copper and Iron That would work Like the Submarine from Alex Caves, And on the Ocean floor there would now actually be Ore and Loot to make it so that It's worth going down there. The Abyssal Resider would have a 50% Chance To flee or a 50% Chance to attack when Spotted. It would swim after you and Begin attacking you, If he gives Up the Chase, He would Swim around the Corner and Dissapear. But That isn't the Only thing it would be able to do, If you either got it too low in The Water, Left your Vehicle Still for too long, Or just Rowwed on a Boat over a Deep Ocean, The Abbysal Resider would Latch onto your Boat/Submarine and Follow you to The Surface. There, It would stalk you for a while, Turning a corner and Dissapearing when you see It, Before Attacking after you seeing it a few times. It would attack, Blinding you and forcing you too look at it. It would roar, Before beginning a Chase. If it Gives Up the Chase, Or you get it too Low, It would retreat Into the nearest Body of Water and Dissapear, Not Bothering you Untill the Next Time You Dare to set foot In The Ocean.

When its hanging in the cave instead of it turning around to look at you, it should just turn its head at you after you make a loud enough noise, or just get close enough, and then it should disappear and appear behind you making a loud screeching noise and the moment you make eye contact it disappears again, and will appear again later in the cave chasing you
