Our team has been getting a few emails about our modified 1992 Woodmizer LT-40 sawmill. So in this video, I decided to do a bit of a run through on how we cut the throat to make it extendable from 28" to 42" total width cuts.

This is an amazing idea. I have been waiting to cut my sawhead for a while now so I can cut bigger logs, but I have over 100 blades. I am super tired of having to cut grooves in the top of the log to get the saw head to fit at maximum sawhead height. Making the sawhead width extended is going go save me days of labor with the chainsaw and also alow me to cut bigger slabs as well as using my small blades for the narrow logs. Thanks again!!!

Yahoo! That was great...You have big balls my friend..There quite a few small mills around here and no dry kilns...In my county here in Southern ,Ore they use satellites to keep track of all the building..So the county is watching real close.I live near a creek 250" away..They won't let me build a movable dry kiln...I need one...Great video! Thanks

Great idea. I cut 27 species of Burls and The two containers of exotics I purchased from Laos in 2004 and I cut about 10 % of it up to get the money back I invested. I waited 19 years to sell off the Amboyna Burl off and the Dalbergia Cochinchinesis AKA SIAMESE ROSEWOOD off for guitars sets now with the slabs of it I have Afzelia XY-Lay. I have a 1999 LT-40 Super Hydraulic Italian Diesel Engine with 1,232 hours on it. I had Woodmizer Service Guys come out in the Austin, Texas area in February 2023 & they spent 9 hours on it upgrading my fuse panel & fuses and replace the five bearings and adjust everything on it removing rust and making it cut perfectly. They were great never took a brake. They worked all that night on another saw with the lighting they had. I waited five years to get them here and it was worth the money invested. Now I’m going to widen it to 48” 14:55 or 52”. Thanks for your help.

Great Mod Paul. I wish we had kept our 1993 for the same Mod, but wide natural edge boards was not the fad in 2012. Think about replacing the driven pulley for your WM power feed to a larger diameter to get more torque .

We have already maxed out the size of pully and even added a tensioner to keep that little belt way tighter, but still at the very slow speed it struggles. I'd like to actually change it to a bicycle chain, then it would just crawl along but with danger or breaking I suppose.

Hahaha, Yeah we get a lot up here. We actually rarely cut in the extended mode, but it's nice having that option. I used to use it more before I got my large sawmill.

Out west in saskatchewan we got a heck of blizzard in early November but none since , nicest winter since 2011 , highs up to = single digits, only had 2 weeks - 25 . I would love to get a mill but all the saw logs in the area would only last a year

You said that sometimes your belts slip on your motor that appears to be a 10hp electric motor that should have enough torque to burn the belts right off. I'm wondering if you're not using matched belt pairs for your saw? You can order them in matched pairs there by ensuring that they are the exact same size and there's usually no additional cost maybe a buck or two.

Hi, Thanks for the message, but I mean the belt that drives the saw head back and fourth, not the blade motor belts.

I’d like to know what the length of your aluminum was cut to fit? I was considering making mine wider at 11:31 48” opening and that would make it close at a wider opening.

These are 1.5'' wide blades, we get most of our blades from Lennox but also from Woodmizer

GENIUS! There is Nothing Greater then hatching your own invention...Carrying it out to fruition.. I mean its a brillant thought!.. Little risky in the beginning..You must have thought it over more then a few times... Not everyday you cut your saw mill in two ! I wonder if you asked woodmizer their thought?)) Basically is there any difference with the Wood mizer wide head and this??

I did not ask woodmizer....LOL. Yes I thought on this for a while before attempting. This was before many people had done this. I only found 2 images and no information on the interweb about this at the time. The one I would was welded solid.

If nobody has done that, that's absolutely a patent!! Woodmizer should make this an option & pay you for the invention! Maybe a new mill? I built a machine that chamfers log railing ends & can do both ends of a spindle in under 7 seconds but woodmizer had no interest in looking at it despite their machine taking forever to do same job... & I wish my 87 LT40 was electric & hydraulic!!

Great idea, what blade profile do you use? I use WM double hard 10 degree? Currently Lt-28 possibly going wide! Has a 25 hp should have enough power? Thanks

Hi Chuck, I have found the best profile for wide cutting is the Turbo 7deg blades, I think because of the deeper gullets to allow more dust to be pulled away easier, just my theory. With that said I'm using 10deg because I get my blades from Lennox now and they don't have the 7deg turbo profile. I did have a gas motor for a while but not with 1.5'' wide blades, the old 26hp onan did handle wide cutting cell with 1.25'' wide blades.

Given that you said you do most of the cutting in the normal mode (28" wide or less), and you have your monster wide saw mill, is it even worth using your extended 42" mode on the wood mizer?

Great question, yes it is!!! What mostly allows us to cut is the log that would be difficult to place when in the normal width, so we aren't exactly pushing it to the 42'' limit all day long, but for 24'' to 34'' logs that have arms or are curvy this mill is actually quicker then the big mill. Mostly from a handling stand point. The monster is best with 40'' + logs.

Any chance you could do a video explaining 1/4 sawn and the other 2 ways to cut? Also why do they say 6/4 or 8/4 when sawing lumber?

He mostly just cuts slabs. There are plenty of videos about rotating logs for quarter sawn lumber. 8/4 is just 2 inches 6/4 is 1.5. I think they just do it confuse rookies.

Hi, we don't really do any qtr sawing and there are already some great videos here on youtube about it. The reason we say 8/4 not 2'' is because 8/4 does not actually meant 2'', when green 8/4 means about 2.25 or more. Wood shrinks so if milled at 2'' green once dry it will be under 2'' and not sellable as 2'' lumber. 8/4 lumber should be above 2'' in thickness once dry.

Sorry no I don't, I just measured the inside of each side after cutting, then subtracted about. an inch, to give it about 1/2'' on each end for crap or bad weld or what ever to make sure it fit in.

also what psi tension does a blade like that get adjusted to?

4000 PSI. The blade will stretch a little bit and will need to be re-tensioned. If the PSI goes too low while cutting, you will get wavy slabs. Always keep checking the tension gauge

Since the log is over 3 years old, is it still recommended to air dry the slabs? Great video.

Unfortunately the wood does not dry very much when still in log form, so yes air drying + kiln drying is still required. Thanks for watching

Hope someone answers but it’s March 6 2021 there is a lt40 hydrolic 1992 with 4500 hours the widow is taking offers and going to take the highest I’m lost on what to offer It’s all there but been rigged poor man as things broke and welded to railroad iron on ground no trailer
