Patrons get one free "This video sucks" joke: www.patreon.com/wordsnwood This one was all about solving some problems. Seemed simple in hindsight, and then you wonder why you didn't do this earlier!

Art, you can always reuse the extra cord to build another extension cord, to use the "original" cord when sanding without the dust collector.

i did this years ago. I used music cable connectors which was the closet to what Festool uses

Nice mini-upgrade Art. I use a short extension cord with my festool vac as well. The big advantage for me is that it removes the strain from the outlet on the vac itself since you're not constantly plugging/unplugging tools. I recently got a fein turbo I myself to dedicate to a cnc machine; one thing I can highly recommend, attach it to a dust separator like a dust deputy if you can.

I've thought about it, but space is tight. This pretty much 100% dedicated to sanding, so it does not fill quickly.

Good one Art-I'm going to have to try that for myself!

Great video, Art! Two excellent points you made: 1) Don’t be afraid to modify your tools; and 2) If dust collection isn’t convenient, you won’t use it. I hadn’t thought of either of those points before but they make so much sense. Do what works for YOU - not necessarily what works for others and/or how the tool was made. I was looking at putting in permanent dust tube runs in my small shop, but I found it was easier to just get long hoses for my dust collector and shop vac. It’s not as convenient perhaps, but it works well for me. Permanent ducting would have been expensive and a PITA to install the way my shop is laid out. But you are so right that if it takes to much effort, people won’t do it and thus put their shop cleanliness and health in jeopardy. Thanks very much for sharing this! 👍🏼

Wouldn't it have been easier to disassemble the sander and cut the cord where it attaches to the sander and then you'd have your factory plug which is much nicer and smaller?

I know I've looked inside other tools but for some reason did not think to check inside this one. But that might not have been easier... depends on what it looks like inside the sander.

Not sure about in North America, but here you can get "cable sleeves" that can keep both the vacuum hose and power cable - neater than cable ties

(Ontario) They _used to_ sell cut-to-order central vac hose which included 120VAC conductors to the beater-head and controls wound around the vacuum hose. At some point consumer-safety laws shifted such that the ends needed to be sealed together (for want of a ground connection) So the un-terminated hoses became a B2B only item. But I imagine that a larger than (6A) version must exist somewhere.

If you dont want to have to clean your vacuum filter all the time. You put a bucket inline with your vacuum and it catches all the dust for you. And keeps your vacuum cleaner

Yup. got one of those elsewhere in the shop... Haven't figured yet how best to put one with the fein. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eFacL8b0OGg.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kp-x3iCsXpg.html

I would have not cut the sander cord. Run the sander cord along the hose as far as it goes. Then plug in the extention cord and run it all the way to the vacuum. Cut the extention cord at the end to fit the vacuum. That way there is no bulky connection near the sander and you only need to make one cut.

That wouldn't work because the vacuum is used with other tools as well

If it was dedicated to just the sander, that would make sense. But Art needs to use the dust vac with other tools. So he custom made the extension cord to fit the vac which makes more sense.

If I never removed the sander, sure, but this way I can remove the sander and just use the vacuum as is.
