When you’re researching coolers, the price of Igloo can be pretty appealing. But do their coolers actually keep your stuff cold?
In this Igloo BMX 52 Quart review, I compare the Igloo to similar sized coolers from YETI, RTIC, and even Amazon to see how the Igloo stacks up.
The Igloo BMX 52 is my top recommendation if you want a budget-friendly cooler that’ll last you a few good years. It’s not the most durable cooler, and I can see it breaking down in 3 or 4 years. But that might be all you need it for. For the best cooler possible in this range, I still prefer YETI, but if you don’t want to bust your wallet, the Igloo BMX 52 is a great choice.

Just yesterday I found an Igloo bmx52 on clearance at Target for $35. First thing I did was add a gasket for the top seal. Didn’t think to hide any socks inside before purchase. Was curious about insulation, glad I didn’t have to cut my bargain in half to find out, thanks!

I have 2 igloo 52bmx and when I purchased them I noticed no gasket (I’m addicted to coolers) I also have lifetime coolers ozark trail coolers pelican but no yeti’s at all. So after installing the gasket our head from Home Depot, it fit perfect in the lid groove and when I tell you it’s air tight it’s air tight I even tested it with water and turned it upside down and 0 leaks which made me happy with the gasket placement even the lid was like suctioned into the cooler which then you needed more muscle to open the air tight lid almost like it was under vacuum, I took it it to the smoky mountains Gatlinburg ténsese in July from Chicago where I live and it held ice retention for every bit of 5 days but in the last day it was pure water but real cold water and that’s that we were in and out if the cooler for drinks but also remember I prepped the cooler and items going into the cooler which makes a huge difference precooling is definitely needed. But so far my best cooler is my lifetime 55 quart holds ice better than yeti I’d say.

I have performed the ice efficiency tests using the Yeti and Rtic 45 Qt coolers and they are the equivalent of one another-pretty much the same deign components. The one significant difference with the Igloo BMX is the absence of the rubber "D " molding at the impression in the lid , where it meets the raised ridge that runs along the inside edge of the cooler body . The Yeti, Rtic and Amazon coolers discussed in this video all have the rubber"D"molding . I bought a 90 inch by 3/8ths inch section of that rubber"D " mold at Ace Hardware for $5.00 at Ace hardware. The flat side of the D mold has an adhesive back. I cut it to size and installed it in the impression in the lid of my BMX. GUESS WHAT? the modified BMX cooler now matches the Yeti and Rtic coolers ice efficiency.

Igloo hinges are a bit flimsy. The interior wire is there to stop over stressing the hinges but is only as strong as the two screws holding it. Taking screws out and dipping in caulking and reinstalling will help.

Measurements on cooler lid are for accurately measuring sturgeon fish. Can only keep fish bigger than exactly 3ft, an no longer than exactly 6ft. (I know exact length has meaning! 1 of my Fish 1\2" short, found myself standing In front of judge) oh please let us out of here, the blade is getting closer an clo! Gem Top pick up canopies used isolation forms on interior ceilings using "A" / "B" mix. By using different A/B mixes could change form from soft too rock hard, making better insulation factors. Can you get better insulation mix from wal Mart form spray cans?

wouldn't the thermometer probe affect each cooler differently? Did the igloo have a rubber gasket? If it didn't..then the wire for the temperature probe would greatly affect that test. With a wire coming out of the cooler, the coolers with a gasket would still be fully sealed if not partially; and the Igloo BMX would be open to the ambient air outside the cooler. You should use a wireless thermometer probe to get a better comparison
@andrewsbbq
@andrewsbbq 11 месяцев назад
For $5 adding a gasket from Home Depot is key on the BMX
@felixchien1664
@felixchien1664 11 месяцев назад
@@andrewsbbq It depends on how well the gasket fits and is designed. It's not as simple as $5. I've built aluminum cases that needed to be fairly dust proof. Fitted rubber gaskets and prototyping it is very expensive. Not something you can simply buy at a hardware store. It's not just material cost unfortunately. If there were no gasket, the space created by a wired thermometer would be a huge heat leak. Crack open your back patio door and see how much your AC will have to run...
@andrewsbbq
@andrewsbbq 11 месяцев назад
@@felixchien1664 there is a slot already on the Igloo that a D profile gasket from HD fits perfect. It deals so we’ll actually that I have picked the Igloo 52 up by the rubber toggles with about 15lb of ice and drinks inside and suction held it. I’d estimate it took about 25lbs lifting force to open the lid… which happens with rotomold coolers too and is why some of have push button purge to pop the seal
@felixchien1664
@felixchien1664 11 месяцев назад
@@andrewsbbqI see. I'm surprised that Igloo doesn't have a gasket. My first comment I was hoping for a reply from the video creator. If there's no gasket at all, then that test with a wired thermometer is almost meaningless. He should use a wireless thermometer to get a more fair comparison. Otherwise the temp test for two coolers that are partially/fully sealed with gasket is fair...but the Igloo BMX would literally be open to the ambient air outside the cooler. Not equal test protocol
@felixchien1664
@felixchien1664 11 месяцев назад
@@andrewsbbq as for your added D gasket, it would depend on how well the corners (where two gaskets meet) are sealed. That's part of the reason why having it fitted exactly is critical. It seems you did well with the HD gaskets. Based on my experience, it's very difficult to get an air/water tight seal by cutting up and adding on a gasket. There has to be equal compression on all surfaces, not just a tight fitting. I'm sure it can be done though with a HD or Lowes run.

I've got a real problem with this guy's idea of "Science". First thing I look for in a cooler is an exterior shape that doesn't have deep recessed panels where there could be insulation or a greater width at the lid than the sides which means the cooler needs more space in the canoe or boot. The Igloo is best in that regard. Drops coolers and claims the Igloo isn't as strong, despite showing absolutely no damage! Try dropping your "rotomolded" coolers onto the deck of a fibreglass boat and tell me which one does the most damage. The igloo will be the winner again. Sticks a probe into the cooler destroying the airtight seal and then recommends buying a much more expensive cooler because it has a rubber gasket instead of pointing out how easy and efficiently a gasket can be added to the Igloo for next to nothing. Best handle, best volume to exterior dimension ratio, least damaging if dropped, lightest weight, only one with tie down eyes on the lid (perfect for attaching a closed cell foam cushion, adding hugely to it's insulation AND usefulness), best price and easily modified into a seven day cooler makes the choice a no-brainer.

Just got one of these coolers; I live in Texas and it's 90+ outside. Put a 7lb bag of unopened ice in the cooler, inside the garage, totally dark, no sun coming in. 24 hours later the ice was almost completely melted and the water temp was 50 degrees. Another 24 hours and the water temp was 82 degrees. This is a horrible product. Don't waste your money. Taking mine back....

No cooler, including a Yeti, is going to work very well unless you "pre-chill" it before putting ice in it. Put some frozen water bottles (actually, water frozen in old Gatorade bottles works well, or you could use those freezer packs sold by the cooler companies) 24 hours before using the cooler. Try that again before taking it back.

I know. It's mental. I bought the Igloo BMX25 and easily upgraded it with feet, gasket, cushion, cutting board and Reflectix insulation inside and out, and I have fresh milk, meat and produce after a full seven days. It weighs less, costs less, takes up less space, does less damage to things it bumps into and doesn't make me feel like a "fanboy".

I've had an RTIC 45 for a year. Just sold it because it was too big. Otherwise, it was great. Trying to decide what to get now. Everything 35 and south of that is in the mix, including Yeti. The thing is, if you really don't need or want to keep ice in there a really long time, there may not be a real need for the rotomolds at all. Most of the traditional coolers should perform fine if all you're doing is using them to keep things cold for up to 24 hours. Past that, you'll probably want an rotomold or other insulated one. The key with ALL coolers is to "pre-chill" them. NONE of them work well if you throw ice and drinks in there when they're room temp. Even if the drinks are already cold, the cooler itself has to be ready to go. The benefits of the Yeti that I'm finding over the RTIC, for example, are the weight and the fact that Yeti truly does have the best insulation/ice time. I don't think that is really debatable. Whether that is worth the money is what everyone has to decide for themselves.
