There's been lot of hype around the Digitech Bad Monkey Overdrive pedal since Josh of JHS pedals posted a video comparing it to a Klon! I managed to get my hands on once to try out for myself, and have to say I'm quite impressed!!
Great playing and great review mate. I have this pedal and love it as with any of the Digitech or DOD pedals it has quality written all over it! Great to see that this company has come back and are releasing again.😉
Thanks a lot! I really enjoyed how the Bad Monkey sounds - I’ll be making some captures on my Quad Cortex for sure, and if the prices drop back down I’ll probably pick one up!
This bad monkey hype is just hillarious. I've been playing with the same old bad monkey since it came out. I've tried dozens of others, but i just always went back to it, because I like the way it boosts the treble. Its the only pledal I run. Not going to sell it either. 😂
Honestly, in a mix or a band context you cannot tell the difference between different pedals of the same topology. At the end of the day the 5% difference in sound (I'm being generous) between a 40$ pedal and a 8000$ is it really worth paying 200x the price? We are all guitar players here, we should know what it means to use our ears. Moreover, a sound is a sound, if you can get an awesome tone with whatever gear more power to you. Don't buy into the hype, use your ears.
I agree with you 100% That said I used to work in a guitar store and customers, definitely and absolutely, bought guitars and associated gear, according to the manufacturer's name.
I bought this pedal for £30 in 2020, couple it with the Boss DS-2 to get two-stage drive/distortion & boost. For me, the low and high controls made it more versatile than say a TS9. At £200 on Reverb it’s currently in a highly competitive Klon-Clone bracket, so maybe this revised price is correct for the current market 🤷🏻♂️
This is true, I do feel at that low a price, and when purchasing from Alibaba/Aliexpress, there’s always a QC risk though. But it’s true, a $35 Chinese Klone probably can sound more than close enough to the real deal
Great comparison! I actually like the BM a bit more than the TS for a slight high-end clarity. This whole thing is a lot of fun, especially since the Klon has been demystified by a pedal with such a playful and silly name.
Nice Randy Rhoads Oz melody played on the Klon comparison. I play Commande and 2000 series MXR and most tubers just hate the look of them - no bright arty cases, no punny names. Just TONS and TONS of great electronics in each. It should be about the SOUND first. Guitar stuff used to be firstly about the sound, until more recently.
I got one as a free gift for taking out a subscription to a certain guitar mag a few years ago. Think I should sell it before prices come down? -As they will.
What these Bad Monkey videos are doing is demystifying the overdrive pedals as a whole. Its become "I can get a Bad Monkey to sound like.." bonanza. So whats happening is now everyone wants a Bad Monkey because its become the "Pedal of a thousand overdrives" But the real question is this....what other Overdrive pedals are there that can sound like other pedals? Can a TS sound like a Klon? Can a Blues Driver sound like a TS10? Can a Metal Zone sound like all of them? The trick is to first have the pedal you want it to sound LIKE. But if you have a $5000 Klon....why would you CARE if the Bad Monkey could sound like it?
