Defeating sketchbook fear with...ducks. Not kidding. Sometimes you need a slight change in your routine to allow yourself the grace to just have fun! It can be hard to do sometimes, and I definitely needed a fresh sketchbook to allow my mindset to change. It's the simple things, right?

I love these sketchbooks. However, if you do suddenly get the urge to use alcohol markers you’ll find there are often spreads in these books that are stuck together along the spine and don’t open flat. I use those for alcohol markers and other bleed-through mediums because then I can stick the pages together to hide the mess and not have to deal with a spread that doesn’t lay open probperly.

I actually noticed that! I think the second page is like this, and I was confused and thought maybe to try pry it open, at the risk of tearing. That’s a great suggestion though! 🥰

Bookbinder here, you'll see that on books that are made to hold up for a long time :D Books are bound in "signatures" (typically 4-6 folded sheets stacked inside eachother), and those are sewn together next to eachother in a row, and then we press them and glue down the spine. The area between the first and second signatures are often a weak spot and will tear open with time, so we tack the papers onto eachother a couple of milimetres in from the spine there as well. c: Same goes for the last couple of signatures. The thicker/more durable the book needs to be, the more tacked on sections you'll find. Just thought I'd share hehe!

Aww, thank you! I keep meaning to draw red pandas, they’re absolutely adorable! And my kids are obsessed with axolotls! Definitely gotta draw those little guys too 🥰

You should try drawing sloths! You can make them realistic or blobby and loose (i do the blobby ones) and its a really fun way to incorporate animals or use it as a warm up

It’s true, the first page is always terrifying! It takes A LOT to train yourself into thinking that it’s ok to just have fun with it, and not put the sketchbook on some kind of pedestal!

This is why I have sketch books and 'sketchbooks' them being like whatever notebooks for free commercial thingys. But sometimes I do my best work in them because I feel so free not destroying anything expensive

Haha, that’s always the way, right? When we feel like we have nothing to lose, then we do our best work! There’s so much mindset shifting that needs to happen sometimes just to enjoy drawing without expectations.

Thank you so much! ❤️ omg yes, that’s an excellent suggestion! I don’t mind keeping my marker sketchbook separate from other stuff, but I don’t want it to hold me back either for the reasons I talked about! If you have a spare (smaller) sketchbook about, I’d definitely recommend using it to have fun with other stuff ❤️

Awww the ducks are soo cute!! ❤❤❤ I love your art sooo much! And I'm also super glad you're using other mediums too! That's why I also have one sketchbook just for alcohol markers and I have a royal talens too in this same color as I just started experimenting with colored pencils and water markers! Also the whole being messy and loose is something I'm trying to do too since I'm usually terrified of making mistakes. We definitely gotta have fun with it! 😊❤

Thank you! ❤️ yeah, I really want to just branch out a little more. I used to be obsessed with trying a little bit of everything, but I’ve grown too comfortable with just using alcohol markers. It’s a tough fear to get over, but I really think having a smaller sketchbook makes it easier! There’s less paper to look at, and for some reason I find that comforting 🤣

I love your ducks so could you plese draw some owls too? I find owls to be very relaxing to draw. At the end of the day they are just some silly and pretty birds right? And there are so many types of owls too! Anyways, thanks for your video!!!
