Can we design a console that feels like it's right out of the 80s? Maybe.
Off-the-shelf Parts:
* Seeed Studio XAIO (Arduino) - amzn.to/3PQUgce
* Label Printer - amzn.to/48uu8v1

you know what would be cool? doing something like this for a fantasy console like Pico-8
@JessicaFEREM
@JessicaFEREM 10 месяцев назад
If you JUST wanted to do something for the Pico-8 you could prob just use a rpi of some sort with a cart port.
@KiraSlith
@KiraSlith 9 месяцев назад
@@JessicaFEREMYeah, that's effectively what he just suggested. Pico-8 is just an emulation spec, sure some "dedicated" hardware exists, but that's not how you're intended to "use" Pico-8. Pico-8 suxx dixx. -FOSS Gang

@jnharton

@@gamagama69Honestly an arm-based (or really using any 8/16-bit microcontroller) Pico-8 "game player" system that doesn't run a full OS would be pretty cool. --- That would still be sort of halfway there, because Pico-8 is a /fantasy console/ so any software implementation thereof is essentially a sort of 'virtual machine' (VM) that interprets an instruction set.

To give you some product designer insight to make it feel more like a retail item, think about the end user and marketing. Little things like the sticker on the game should be flipped so it’s properly viewed when inserted. This would have been something that would have been done so product photos showed off a game as well.

For real and for the ports on the front I would split them into 4, make 1 an IR Sensor, leave 2 as usb for mouse and keyboard and make one port have an optional adapter for old games that's modular

Ikr, if he directs, films and edits them himself that's freaking amazing. It kinda inspires me to give youtube one more shot, I've made a few channels in the past but eventually given up as the amount of effort put in to directing, filming and editing was too much for me and no family member was able to help me even if they wanted to. But I'm going to give it another shot I think.

If the frame was reworked a little, the ports on the front could be reworked that lead to a new controller input. USB is cool, but that feeling of weird controller inputs was really mysterious and nostalgic for me. The S-Video input looking ones especially got to me, because it looked so complicated.

This video actually hits home with me in a way not many videos do. When I was a teenager around 2001, a friend and I spent some time to create a game console that used floppy disks as its storage medium. At it's heart of course, it was torn down laptop motherboard trimmed and repurposed into a somewhat generic looking beige chassis and a custom OS written in C and some assembler that allowed for some low level graphics calls and stuff. It was affectionately dubbed the Fdrive. We wanted to make actual cartridges for it but we were definitely butting heads against the limitations of the time as teenagers in a world where parts were not so readily accessible.

Something that was always fascinating to me were the "data crystals" in Stargate & Stargate Atlantis. Also these scifi crystal interfaces where you put a crystal on a surface and it all lights up around it and turning the crystal controls the interface etc.. That or all the very chonky precision machined expensive looking storage devices of cassette futurism (as opposed to real life cheap plasticy consumer electronics). Where you like plug it in with a complex locking mechanism and many intricate moving parts and a satisfying noise. Like how R2-D2 interfaces with spaceships in the prequels but as a USB stick. Or where you need to grab a handle with your hand and turn it 180° to unlock a giant "data canister". Like something out of a 80s/90s scifi anime.
