Never apologise for getting stuck in to a hard job, working your butt off and sweating. As a designer I think it is paramount that you have a true understanding of what it takes to transform something from start to finish. Experience on the ground is invaluable and will inform all that you do in the future. Great job! Nothing like actually being an active participant in the transformation of these spaces. You will forever be truly connected to this home you are building literally from the ground up. Hi from New Zealand again.

The fact he also took his time to teach you without asking for more “money” etc is amazing in itself and shows his character!!!

As someone who works in Hazmat and with all your Reno/demo plans I would recommend reaching out to a company in your area to get them to take samples of everything from drywall and joint compound for asbestos, to checking your paint layers for lead. Both are very prevalent in houses your age and huge health effect years down the road!

Love your contractor. He is so willing to be filmed and help you out with no judgment! Koodos to him!

Love it, Drew! As a former owner/steward of a very old house, I can offer this tiny piece of encouragement... remembering to breathe, and maintaining a sense of humor about absolutely EVERYTHING (especially the timing of things) is key! So many balls in the air can be overwhelming. We are all sending you loving energy.

The good thing about ripping out the dry wall in the kitchen is that it's a good opportunity to get the electricians in to install the wiring for more power points or new oven connection if you need it especially if the new layout is different so the power sockets for the fridge, microwave, range hood etc will be in a different location.

Drew, you need to remove all items from kitchen first , stove, cabinet, electric plates, stove , fridge anything that can be damaged also cover all your lower cabinets with drop clothes to protect them. Always a lot of preparation before you start demo.

I love the keeping-it-real experience and filming. More helpful than watching the shows on the DIY channels, which makes the whole process look like it'll only take a weekend to accomplish! Better to REALLY know how it goes!

Cover your appliances! With any plastic! All that dust. And I don't know how houses are in California but the vents are super important when there's central heating and AC, so cover the vents too when demoing anything. Dust gets everywhere! You can also just cover with a plastic sheet the doorways to contain the dust to that one single room.

When you said you thought denim was sweatproof!!! That whole section made me laugh so hard…. and out loud, by myself. Would never hold it against you- instead, it makes me like you even more for being such a real and fun human!!! You really earned that pumpkin drink!!!!

Good job Drew! But I would make this one little suggestion-next time you do demo, take out everything even if you are going to reuse it. Makes demo easier and keeps the items you are keeping clean. Can’t wait to see what comes next!

Drew, please wear a respirator in case you have lead. I enlarged some windows in an old 100-year-old farmhouse and ended up with elevated lead levels! Just an FYI. I rehabed houses for resale and loved watching the changes as I torn things out and replaced them. It is so satisfying.

Such a fun video!! You’re so cute with your butt sweat. LOL I’m a degreed kitchen designer and I love what you’re doing. Please consider installing a new, wide window over the kitchen sink (that would span all the way across the entire width of the two existing windows on either side of the sink) since you’re already down to the studs. It will make a HUGE difference in making it feel more open and airy (especially since you took down all of the uppers in that area). If you ever need help or ideas, please let me know. I’m somewhat local.

Keep in mind you’re going to want flooring that will take drips and spills without staining, and something you can mop/clean. So if you want the “raw” look, you’ll have to pour a durable, clear finish over it.

That tile you love is gorgeous! However, think about how difficult cleaning a floor is when there are a lot of grooves for dirt and food to get trapped in!

Good for you for jumping into the demo yourself! Listening to you talk about how hard it is to remove the tiles reminded me how years ago shortly after my divorce, I demo-ed the bathroom. There were one-inch tiles on the floor, and they came up one-by-one. I eventually realized that the work was very aggressive and therapeutic - I took out a lot of my feelings about the divorce on those tiles!

I’m a designer and I appreciate how you emphasized how much hard work demo can be. The design shows on TV can leave DIYers feeling hopeless when they embark on a project like this. Renovations, even small ones, are hard work, time consuming, back breaking and create a ton of trash, and debris. But the rewards of a job properly, safely and well done are immeasurable. I can’t wait to see how you design this space Drew❤️

Drew - I admire your 'go for it" attitude. Many years ago we bought a 1890's home...that we ended up doing a ton of work on...the former owner had taken the kitchen and made it into a play room. The fridge, gas stove and sink (very tiny) were put into the pantry. Well - we fixed all that...you are off to a great start. Rooting for Team Lone Fox!!!

Love that you showed reality- the mess, tile removal is a bite, real sweat, etc. We’ve done a lot of demo and renovation. It’s hard work and so worth it.

Horror flash backs to trying to remove my tile entry back in March. "It's so hard," was waaayyyy too relatable. Removing tiling is SO much more tiring and time consuming than I thought.

Before re-plasting, check the quality of the wood, do wood treatment (in France we use xylophene), check all cabling if appropriate then, plaster😁

It's pretty easy to remove the upper cabinets without damaging them, so you can sell or give them away 👍

The home improvement shows make everything look so quick and easy. I help my husband with our renovations and my principal job is clean up and even that is not easy. You didn’t mention how heavy the bags of tile were. I think it’s great that you are interested in learning and doing things on your own. In the end it is much more meaningful to know that you had a hand in the construction of your own space.

Hi, I was bien and raised in South America and I am familiar with the Colonial Spanish style. The dark wood ceilings, terracota floors, black antique lamps and ornaments /attachments, at the end they create a dark atmosphere. So, my recommendation is to watch for the dark tones you are selecting because at the end you can end up having dark living areas. Then people end up painting in white such black ceiling lamps... and every thing else ... 🤷🏻‍♀️😂Again, congrats on your new home!! 🎈

OMG Drew! You made me a nervous wreck. Always get a ladder for higher up tile removal. If one of those came down on you, it could knock you right out or cut you with a sharp edge.

This was hilarious, thank you so much for sharing this honest reality of diy. My husband and I have spent the last two years renovating our house from scratch and we were clueless diy newbie’s when we started but now are very capable and I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved. So keep at it because soon you will be too and you’ll enjoy looking back at theses early videos and realise just how far you’ve come.

Crazy; there are people who are paying $50,000 for a new kitchen with THAT tile and THAT style, and within the first minute of this video we see Lone Fox take a hammer to said tile. The tile being ripped out is timeless, not dated. So many different things can be done to freshen up a beautiful kitchen. I am lucky if I can afford paint for my kitchen; I can't watch this video any further than 2 min. I tried, just can't. Reconsidering my subscription with this channel.

I was surprised tHat there is no insulation on that exterior wall. Your vision to remove upper cabinets was a good one. Even with it all naked the space seems nicer.

Maybe use that extremely beautiful but extremely pricey tile that you love (that I love, too!) as the backslash for the butler/coffee area. It's a smaller space but visible from the kitchen and the other room that you just carved an arch into. That would be SO lovely & a bang for your buck!

Quick tip: Rely on RU-vid videos. There are a LOT of repair/remodel/construction videos online that will discuss everything from proper tools to proper technique to proper materials. They provide safety tips in everything from gas leaks to asbestos/lead testing to which adhesives will hold to how to legally dispose of materials. I think you might have saved yourself some effort and prepared you better for the tile removal. When you're getting down to the wall surface, it pays to remove everything first. That means cabinets, door/window framing, outlet/lightswitch covers, even lights. And it's helpful to run a razor knife along any corner or crevice, to avoid the paint or paper drywall covering from ripping across an adjacent plane (I noticed some of the tile/wall removed stripped across the ceiling; you would not have had to replace the ceiling drywall, but now you have to, especially in a moist environment like a kitchen). Considering how much area you were clearing, you did a fantastic job in a short amount of time! This kitchen will look AMAZING when you get done! Please have someone come in, an expert, in testing for asbestos. Old houses like yours have it in old walls, but especially in floors. Many times, asbestos floors are covered over with safer layers. When you go to pull up those floor tiles, you may disturb asbestos tiles and endanger yourself. Please be careful!

Ok but Drew, have you considered turning the current kitchen into the butler’s pantry and turning the dining room into a huge beautiful kitchen????

Your intro of you trying to get the tiles off had me in stitches, just reminded me of my daughter who has just bought her first house and also redecorating/remodeling. She always has to bring me in usually for advice or show them how to do it all, bless. It's hard for you all starting out , but getting the builder in, to show others was a genius idea.

I love that you're showing the work like it is, sweaty trousers and jumping from one project to the next and all, because that's what it's actually like. It's very educational and entertaining. And though a nice video from start to finish for one space is fun to watch, it's more fun to finally seeing it come together bit by bit. (And you can always use the footage you have to make one single video per space at the end, if you like. It's always nice to see a recap! But if it's a choice, real time is IT for me).

This is the rule of DIY; Nothing is ever as easy as you think it's going to be and always expect something to throw you off budget behind the walls. I also agree the post below that a designer shouldn't be too proud to call for help and involved themselves in every aspect of design from demo to swinging a hammer and tiling. Great job.

Always a good idea to cover stuff like the stove when doing demo. Old sheets work well. Removing tiles is a huge job, as we all know now lol.

Great to see you putting the hard work in Drew! Your excitement for this renovation is apparent. My thoughts on your design: I’d paint the butlers pantry dark as well as then it will be less obvious from the dining room. Also have you looked at quartz or engineered stone countertops? Marble is expensive and easily stained plus needs a lot of maintenance. Quartz or engineered stone is more durable and low maintenance. I do love the design direction you’re taking with the dark wood and Spanish influence. Oh and don’t forget your lighting and electrical outlet planning before sheet rocking and tiling.

Hi Drew! 👋Here are my lessons learned while renovating a condo. 1. For the cabinets, tape the doors shut and leave them attached to the cabinets 2. There are usually long screws that attach the cabinets to the wall and sometimes they are attached to each other. If they don't detach there's often a hidden screw somewhere (you might need two people to lift them down so that they don't come crashing down on you...) 3. If you remove them carefully, you can donate them to the Restore, post them on craigslist etc. They looked to be high quality cabinets in good condition so I hope you didn't just throw them away. :`( 5. Invest in protective gear. Wear goggles, a mask or respirator, protect your ears, gloves and knee pads if needed. I love the 3M soundproof headphones that you can blue tooth music into. You seriously won't hear a thing except your music! It makes demo more enjoyable while protecting your ears and not disturbing your neighbors. The only downside is if you are working with someone and need to converse you won't be able to hear them! 😂 6. Buy some reusable, good quality drop clothes to cover things during demo and move stuff out of the way. That way you'll protect stuff you want to re-use. 7. Old homes can have lead paint, asbestos, lead pipes etc. Educate yourself on how to keep yourself and loved ones safe from these toxic materials. 8. There are TONS of videos online on how to do all of these things! Watch them first before diving in head first. 9. If you absolutely love it, go with the expensive tile. ☺It's ok to splurge now and then. Go slow and save for your next project. Make wise and thoughtful decisions. 10. You will learn a ton just by doing! Good luck and look forward to the transformation of your beautiful, historical property! 🏡❤

Demo is tough…there are always surprises behind walls! Having the right tools for the job is essential. I wonder if using a 1/4” square of plywood behind the head of the pry bar would have helped to maintain the integrity of the drywall? Either way, your marble counter and backsplash will be stunning!😍

I've just got through a 9 month reno on my house (did it all ourselves) it is sooo stressful in the process and takes so much work but it is all worth it in the end. There's something about pouring your blood, sweat and tears into something that makes you so much more appreciative and proud of the final result. Keep going and take care of yourself.
