Most rap songs in this day and age are quite limited in their subject matter. Rappers such as Playboi Carti (‘ALL RED’, ‘Timeless’ [with The Weeknd], ‘Popular’), Ken Carson (‘overseas’, ‘ss’, ‘succubus’, ‘Yale’) and Travis Scott (‘FE!N’, ‘Active’, ‘Utopia’) only seem to talk about money, women, fast cars and jewellery.
Sometimes though, albeit rather rarely, these rappers decide to be a bit more introspective and talk about their mental and physical problems, take Yeat on ‘Lying 4 fun’ or Ken Carson on ‘i need u’, for example. However, when these rappers do open up, they can be completely ignored or even made fun of (think back to the ridicule Playboi Carti received when he said “my stummy hurt” a few years ago.)
So, in today’s video, I’m sitting down with an actual doctor, Dr Derek Adu-Sarkodie, to look at some medical problems, symptoms and diseases that rappers have talked about in the past. The doctor and I will diagnose each rapper and recommend a course of action to remedy their affliction, with the aim of helping them overcome their sickness and heal the rap game.
I started off with the Migos (‘Slide’, ‘Bad and Boujee’ [with Lil Uzi Vert], ‘Culture’), looking at the track ‘Get Right Witcha’ where they admitted to having itchy skin. The doctor discussed what might be causing the itchiness, and gave Quavo, Offset and Takeoff some invaluable medical advice. Next up, we looked at a Playboi Carti lyric from the song ‘CARNIVAL’ (‘Vultures 1’), followed by an intriguing Young Nudy lyric (‘Mister’ [feat. 21 Savage]).
I then moved on to, the aforementioned, 21 Savage (‘redrum’, ‘prove it’, ‘Creepin’), discussing a rather embarrassing lyric on the song ‘Baby Girl’ (‘Issa Album’), before returning to another Playboi Carti lyric. This one came from the song ‘Long Time (Intro)’ off his 2018 album ‘Die Lit’, and described an even more embarrassing symptom, which the doctor seemed to imply came as a result of Carti drinking a certain purple drink.
After looking at another 21 Savage lyric, from Metro Boomin’s song ’10 Freaky Girls’, followed by yet another Playboi Carti lyric, from ‘R.I.P. Fredo (Notice Me)’, I turned my attention to someone else…NAV (‘Lemonade’ [with Gunna & Don Toliver], ‘Champion’, ‘Tap’). After poking a little fun at the self-proclaimed ‘Brown Boy’, my next target was a lyric from Future (‘MIXTAPE PLUTO’, ‘LIL DEMON’, ‘Like That’), off the song ‘Sup Mate’ with Young Thug (‘So Much Fun’).
Lil Baby (‘BAND4BAND’, ‘In A Minute’, ‘My Turn’) was the next to receive a diagnosis, after the doctor and I took a close look at the song ‘Freestyle’, followed by Future once more and, lastly, a rapper I probably shouldn’t name due to the algorithm!
After diagnosing nearly a dozen rappers from their lyrics, had the doctor and I done our jobs? Would our prognosis have any impact on hip-hop or the rap game? Would the rappers that we aimed to help take our advice? You’ll have to watch to find out!
