The acid actually turned Jack's face white. He wears skin colored makeup over top. That's why his face went white when Vicki threw water into his face. Small detail, but I always loved that. So much fun watching you experience this film for the first time! One of my all time favorites.

I liked that the movie began with Batman being a feared and mysterious figure, rather than taking time in the movie to set that up. It sucks all the mystery out when you show how he becomes the Batman and earns his reputation. It's like the old interrogation technique of "get me 3 nails, a rabbit and some Clorox", then let the suspect imagine what awful things you might be planning to do with it. Their imagination will do the work for you. With Batman, you start off with him being feared and let the audience imagine what he did to get that way. This is what Burton does, and it works well. Nolan tried the other approach, and I at least was underwhelmed, especially since Nolan's Batman spent every movie fighting people who knew Batman's schtick and weren't impressed by it.

Another thing that’s easy to miss is the reason for the smile. If you pay attention, the bullet that Batman deflects actually ricochets through Jack’s mouth/cheeks. You can see a few seconds of the wound before he covers it and trips. The surgeon later on tried to fix the damage but wasn’t entirely successfully due to the severed nerves and thus the smile.

@@thelolbuster I think I feel this way because along with Cesar Romero's portrayal and the animated series after the 1989 movie the Joker to me was always more like 2/3's 'funny' and only 1/3 murderous psychopath in film and TV (I never got into reading comic books as I didn't get internet until I was in my mid-teens and there weren't any comic book shops where I grew up). Again credit where credit is due, Ledger absolutely killed it in the role and deservedly won Best Supporting Actor for his work in the Dark Knight; but all the "cartoony" gags the Joker pulls in this movie (elaborate gas balloons, hand-buzzer that kills, acid lapel flower, etc.) is the way I always see the character

Well it was actually WB who wanted him. One of the producers had a image of the "Here's Johnny!" picture and they drew over it to make him look like The Joker. However, Nichokson originally turned the offer down in 1987. Burton originally wanted Brad Dourif (the voice of Chucky in the Child's Play movies) to play him but WB felt he wasn't a big actor like Nicholson. In order to get Nicholson back, they had to make a public stunt to get his attention and that was to offer the role to Robin Williams who REALLY wanted the role only to relize he was being used. Because of this, he was the one who turned down thr role for The Riddler in Batman Forever because he was so heartbroken to what WB did by backstabbing him.

6:25---Oh, there was a HUGE controversy of Michael Keaton being cast as Batman, largely because he was best well-known at the time for comedies like MR. Adam West is the only Batman, the rest are all lips and eyes in an overblown suit doing bad Clint Eastwood impressions with their voices. And all the "action" is digitally manipulated, you seldom see them do anything. Basically you hire these guys to do Bruce Wayne, not Batman. Nobody cared about Batman in this dopey movie, they were watching Jack Nicholson chew up the scenery. Unfortunately, the script for this movie was nowhere near as good as the first "Superman" had been (it had to be in order to be the mother of all these superhero movies that they're still hilariously churning out every year). This movie was a big hit because of who was in it, and the big marketing campaign behind it (it was Batman with Jack Nicholson as the Joker, it was in-built that people were going to see it). But I don't remember a single person saying at the time "That was a great movie." I know I came out of the theater completely disappointed....and I was a huge Jack Nicholson fan, and a Batman fan to boot, I went in completely ready to like it. (I thought the look of the movie was terrible as well, way over-designed by Burton).

I really don't think most consider him the best. Conroy is the best to most fans. I actually don't know about live action. But here;s my opinion: the script for crisis was bad but Conroy nailed the performance in live action until the twist reveal. Even he couldn't save the writing then. The CW messed up all the cameos in crisi though other than maybe routh superman. But he left immediately. I think Bale is considered the best now by normies but i really don't know honestly. Personally I think Keaton was phenomenal. My point isn't that Keaton was bad, I'm speaking for the fans. Idk but they think conroy is the best i think. My opinion:val kilmer and david mazouz is the most comic accurate imo, affleck is second. But Keaton is one of my favorites. THE most unique version of Batman ever put to screen. I understand if yall say hes the best. The most unique version that still is Batman. Adam West might be second in terms of uniqueness. Both iconic in their own ways. Keaton's character is a different Bruce Wayne. An interesting one because he feels like a real person. An isolated loner. Can't wait to see him again.

@@hermeticallysealed1 Yes and he killed because "I've got a wicked sense of humour" this joker is the biggest psychopath/sociopath of the lot of them. He kills people in elaborate way simply to amuse himself. There's no end goal here, he just wants to kill as many people as he can hence the parade. His first murders in the comics were also with "joker poison" so people die with a big smile on their face to "send 'em home happy". The forced laughter of Ledgers joker (and I love the movie and performance by the way) is the exact opposite of the comic book character in the way he doesn't have to force a laugh, he finds this stuff hilarious and actually can't stop himself laughing at times as he killing people. And Phoenix's joker isn't really the Joker from the comic books and Cesar Romero wasn't nearly sadistic enough (because it was a kids TV show) so yeah as a huge comic book fan I stick by saying this is the CLOSEST to the original comic book Joker even to the fact it isn't make up its how he looks. He was miscast, that's why we didn't take to his performance. And there was no "uproar", people didn't take comic book crap that seriously back then. Everyone knew Adam West from the original series, who is STILL Batman in the flesh. Keaton was a comic actor - who had no real comic lines in this movie, unfortuantely, they all went to Jack - who didn't have the build for Batman, put on a cheesy Clint Eastwood voice when he spoke as Batman (a lame trend that continued with Christian Bale), and didn't have the jawline. Jack Nicholson completely stole the movie away from him. They were paying him so much, they kept adding scenes with him. No one cared about Bruce Wayne and his dopey love story with Kim Bassinger. They did not have the chemistry of Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder had had in "Superman" (the mother of all these superhero movies) and Keaton & Nicholson did not have as good a script as Reeve and Gene Hackman had had to create fireworks in their scenes together. The second Batman movie was better, but Keaton as Batman is serviceable at best.

What many fans may not know is that Nicholson made a genius move when negotiating his Batman contract that ending up making him an extra-large fortune. Nicholson's standard fee to star in a film was $10 million, huge money in the late 1980s. He agreed to play The Joker for only $6 million, but on the condition that if the film did well, he would get a percentage of the profits. This extended beyond box office too, also covering merchandise related to his character. Batman grossed $411 million worldwide on a $35 million budget, and that's before even figuring in huge sales of Joker toys and other merchandise. While Nicholson has never revealed exactly how much cash he made off playing The Joker, it's confirmed to be somewhere north of $60 million, with Nicholson biographer Marc Eliot estimating that the actor actually walked away with closer to $90 million. That's a whopping $194 million when adjusted for inflation. It still stands as one of the most substantial actor paydays in Hollywood history.

Love this movie! Honestly, I always hated when people compared Heath Ledgers Joker to Jack Nicholson’s. They really are two different animals, and both performances were perfect for the movies they were in. People forget how scary Jack’s Joker could be. He struck a perfect balance of being whimsical and menacing at the same time, which honestly, is more true to the character

Nicholson was the Joker. Ledger played a Joker.

@@TheMeefive I disagree. Nicholson was a realistic (not physically but characterwise) version of the Joker. Ledger was a realistic physically character but a very comic accurate otherwise Joker. He wasn't a man, he was a clown. He WAS the Joker. Not to say Nicholson wasn't. I just feel he was too old. Maybe too evil. He didn't have a real connection with Batman. He felt like someone playing the Joker to me. Not the Joker himself. Idk why, he really did a phenomenal job. Ledger played the Joker. Minus the gag gadgets which is a shame. Idk to m the Joker shouldn't feel human which Ledger and Leto played. Nicholson played a realistic story of a man going insane. I appreciate the performance but the lack of overall plan is faithful to earlier versions of the character. So yes it is comic accurate, I just feel he wasn't interested in Batman, just upstaging him. Still overall good Joker and he has ALL the comic gag gadgets (I think) and idk I think the problem is more with Jack wanting a central role. That's why Heath worked, he wasn't the main character, here, The Joker was. So Jack is DEFINITELY good but yeah

@leafyishereisdumbnameakath4259 3 года назад
I changed my mind. The problem wasn't Joker's screen time but If we were shown the scope of his actions through Gordon or something then yeah I think that would make Nicholson amazing.
@TheMeefive

@@leafyishereisdumbnameakath4259 I always find it hilarious when people try to put Ledger's character up as the comic accurate Joker. Why? 1: The co writer of Batman 89 was Sam Hamm who was not only an avid comic book enthusiast, but he based his characters on Bob Kane's original vision. Sam Hamm then went on to create a little show based on Batman89. Maybe you've heard of it, Batman the Animated Series. 2. Nolan has proudly proclaimed that his Batman movies were based on James Bond. Not only were the comic book characterizations unimportant to him, they were virtually ignored. 3. Nolan gave his so called Joker a purpose. He wanted to show the evil imbedded in all humanity. His method of operations was anarchy. Not only did that make Ledger's Joker one dimensional, it also made him quite unfunny. 4. Nicholson embodied the essence of the comic book Joker, not only with the gag gadgets but with his multifaceted personality. He was a megalomaniacal, egomaniac, homicidal psychopath, with unpredictable mood swings and a dark sense of humor. Just like the comic book Joker he had no real agenda, he just followed his whims.

Oh yes, now I remember. The Joker was dancing to a Prince song, Prince did the soundtrack and was actually dating Kim Basinger (Vicky Vale) at the time. I believe she was in one of his videos. Yeah, that was a weird time.

This is my favorite Batman movie still. The Noir feel and having Joker as a mobster is really fitting and true to the original stories. Today's Jokers are largely based on the 80s type and is good but this Joker is my favorite outside of Mark Hamils who also is a crime boss and as a kid I always saw both Jokers as similar and played into each other well.

The chemicals bleached his skin white and colored his hair green (one of the more common origin stories in the comics). He's actually taking the makeup OFF when he's wiping his forehead in the boardroom, and it comes off when she splashes him with water in the museum. (Also, just fyi, when he shot Batman and it ricocheted, it went through his face and severed his nerves, which is why he's permanently smiling.)

Keaton and Nicholson will always be my Batman and Joker. I LOVE this movie, it's the most quotable. "Let me tell you about this guy I know Jack, mean kid, bad seed, hurt people..." "I like him already!" 😂 The gadgets, the vehicles, how intimidating batman is Keaton was awesome. And Nicholson was in his element too. Iconic scenes.

Best Batman/Bruce Wayne, Best Joker, Best Alfred, Best Batmobile, Best Batplane (or whatever you'd call that), Best Gotham... now go watch Batman Returns for Best Catwoman and Best Penguin :D And I do mean it... some people could argue that Heath Ledger is better Joker and I'd say they're close (I still prefer Jack Nicholson) but Catwoman and Penguin? No hands down, both beat the old tv series, the cartoon, the comics and (in case of Catwoman) the movie versions. Period. Also, this movie was my childhood. I had it recorded on vhs and watched it daily... DAILY... for MONTHS! I have about 90% of it etched in my memory.

I was 15 when this movie came out, and social media back then wasn't at all as it is today, but the main hype about this movie was how careful the studio tried to be in making sure no photos of Batman looked like got out. That the first time you actually see this Batman in that rooftop scene, and back in '89 and it's the first time you see him, when he did that spread out his cape thing, it was awesome and scary at the same time.

Brandon, my man, *so psyched* you finally saw "Batman '89" 😃My favorite RU-vid reactor reacting to one of my favorite films, life is good 😎 Definitely essential viewing for every cinephile. I'm a huge fan of Burton's Batmans, I consider them to be infinitely better than the Nolan trilogy; Nolan's films are ok, but I do think they're vastly overrated (I know that's a controversial opinion to have, but I stand by it). Burton's Batmans have true artistic value, and unlike Nolan's films these ones legitimately feel like a comic book come to life - Burton's films necessarily maintained the campy comic-book aesthetic while blending it with gothic surrealism and elements of dark fantasy, whereas Nolan's films are so much weaker by comparison because he unwisely chose to ground the Batman universe in minimalistic realism, which was a mistake. "Batman '89" has it all - the best Batman (Keaton), the best Joker (Nicholson; no disrespect to Heath Ledger, but Nicholson will always be the most iconic portrayal of the character), the most memorable musical score (Danny Elfman), and if you're planning to react to the next ones I'm definitely looking forward to your reaction to "Batman Returns," which I personally think is the best Batman film ever made.
