I'm a perfectionist and it took me years to use a notebook without stopping or ripping out paper, because I wasn't satisfied with how it looked. Now I'm two years into journaling and and using pocket notebooks on the go without paying attention to the aesthetic. It was mentally freeing, because perfectionism is one of my weaknesses. Using a notebook as my second brain is helping me overcome my perfectionism, every day a little bit more.

i have so many notebooks with pages torn out 🤣. i would start journaling and then get annoyed with my handwriting, or something i wrote when i was in a bad mood. then my inner critic would nudge me to tear out the gibberish! perhaps i should glue these neglected notebooks together to make them whole again 😜.

Thx for sharing life’s 🎇 🔗🎆 My big problem with small notebooks is “where did write what”. For me it ended up with 10 different notebooks for different categories…. As a result I went back to big post its where I transfer/put the post it in a bigger notebook. The results are that I don’t feel limited to small notebook space, and I can be as detailed as I want to be, so I don’t loose the key element. So basically, I work with post it notes that I put in bigger notebook. Sometimes Its like treasure hunting map…In a good way😊. That’s where I feel comfortable. A big deep note on one page, and the next has a few post it notes with thoughts and ideas

I was a heroin addict for almost two decades, ended up on the street going through awful shit like getting stabbed one night. Slept on the sidewalk in the rain (Seattle area, it's cold up here) and ate out of dumpsters. I was out there for almost three years. I've now been clean for 3 and a half years. Rebuilt my life completely. I tell EVERYONE that the two things that helped me stay on track are: exercising regularly for the massive mental health benefit mainly AND writing down all the things I'm going to do with check boxes next to it. That way I don't get stuck over thinking what I'm going to do because I have already decided. I just DO what's on that list. Next project is starting a Photography and Videography business. I have slowly accumulated the gear while working full time in a factory doing metal fabrication, while also learning Davinci Resolve. I got three cameras (R5 is my main) plus a GoPro, nice tripod and some lights. Need more lights BUT I'm getting close. I've already had one business (SEO/Web Design, which is related to my old career) that made money, but I hated it. Stopped doing it. I've decided to go all in on this and am totally driven about doing something for the first time in my life. I'm lucky to have some business experience with things like sales, marketing and social media advertising and with all the knowledge I have now, it's finally time to turn my passion into my living. It sounds too easy but exercise plus writing down and tracking my goals/projects daily really did help me turn my entire life around.

Thank you for sharing your experience and how writing in a notebook and exercising had changed your life. I noted that just doing those two things consistently and routinely create an anchor. The routine becomes a comfort to keep coming back to. I liked what you said about drawing checkboxes and all you have to do is to go down the list. I know for me every morning I writing out my plans and also write my feelings, thoughts on what happened the day before. I don’t feel overwhelmed like I use to.

Somehow I lost that habit to write down my feelings and thoughts, i struggle a lot with this firework in my head, i can not sleep or need too much time to reflect on things people said, what I said, what my Friendships are, who I am... and so on. My heart feels heavy and overwhelmed almost all the time. So thank you so much for speaking out your thoughts and reminding me of to write things down, take time and calm down.

I've started carrying a pocket notebook and journaling and exploring the ideas of "common place books" and compendiums. I have to say, it's been VERY refreshing to know that at any time I can stop, slow down, and just write something down in my notebook. I did struggle with the whole "what notebook should I buy, what should I write in this one, vs that one, etc" and some of the best advice for that, is the best notebook for you to use is the one you have right now. Start with something cheap from walmart or the dollar store, just to start somewhere. And then eventually get in to something like Field Notes, Moleskin, Totebook, Leuchtturm, etc. As a society I feel like we are starting to really yearn and crave that "slow down". Life has been happening so fast and we are constantly bombarded with ads, videos, news, whatever it may be, that we are desperate for an outlet to just slow down and be meaningful. Notebooks are a great avenue for that. Someone also said, journaling and notebooks are cheaper than therapy lol. Not dogging on therapy, but I know at least for me, writing out thoughts, feelings, and emotions has helped me process some of them as you put them pen to paper.

In 1992 Julia Cameron published a book called the Artist’s Way which has similar goals to the ones you describe in this video. The book has some basic principles but ultimately it’s meant to encourage creatives to write down their ideas, feelings ,goals etc. and to get into the practice to write every morning when you get up. It’s meant to help you get in touch with your creativity. It’s a great practice whether you do it first thing in the morning or at another time during the day, whether you combine writing and sketching … whatever you choose… it’s amazing what you can get accomplished too when you write stuff down

I can attest to the benefits of keeping a notebook. My personal notebook is a bit larger. I use an A5 Dotted Leuchtturm. The dotted journal actually opens up my creativity because the lines do not hinder my perspective. Some pages are artistic quotes I create, others are notes from lectures and sermons, and each week and month have their own page simply planning my schedule. One thing I have been doing for several years is keeping track of all the books I read during the time I am using that personal notebook. So glad you shared this on the channel! Really hope it helps people who have never considered it. Also nice to meet Zac on here. Not sure I could go without my cell phone but man it would be nice.

I just found your channel. Seems like you are, despite your large amount of followers, a very down to earth guy. Surprisingly and cool to see. Plus you seem cool about pulling others into your videos. Happy I found you and happier still that you found a way to still the chaotic mind. Must admit, as a creative… I seem unable to give direction to my life…. Either I lack the money, the self- confidence, the knowledge, the support, the trust or mental peace to get any place. Love your friend Zach too by the way. I feel we all need friends like you guys. Not in a creepy way, though is it even possible for a 50- year old woman to creep out people? That in itself suddenly seemed creepy, lovely…. Great vibes, great content and great community. Have a great day everyone….:).

Only through this video, I realised that I have exactly the same issue.. the many fireworks that just keep going off in my head. No wonder I am always so mentally tired but unproductive in real life. You have aptly described what goes on in my head all the time. I may be teaching in the class and then I will have ideas flying off on the next craft project that I need to do (which has no relevance to the Math class I am having at that moment). And, I have the WIP on my table which I needed to complete but I moved on to something else because I wanted to try out the idea that popped into my head. Or when I was working on my project and suddenly decided that I needed to prepare a teaching slide for my English class the next day so that the pupils know what are verbs. So, I should really start a notebook. Thanks for showing me what my brains are up to. :)

Great video!!! I worked in fashion industry for about 10 years of my life. During college I remembered that one of the tasks was to have a notebook and write/draw anything on it. It didn't have to be exactly relate to clothes, it could be an idea for a product campaign, a picture, a background that you saw and you liked it. It really makes a whole difference because as you said Peter, I'm also struggling to create because I have 10 others things to do exactly at the same time. This keeps you focus on what you are doing and you won't forget an idea if you write it down. Also, I have a to do list everyday so I know what I should be doing. Love your work Peter.

I remember my father taking down notes on these small notebooks and later on making an Excel sheet or writing down something on MS Word. But his first preference was always a small field notebook which he always carried. Interestingly he never carried a purse and he had amazing handwriting which I don't have. This video sparked something in me as my father is no longer with me. Miss dad. Now i realize that the notebook that we carried was actually so cool!!

i remember the first video when you mentioned a pocket notebook. i went out and got a field notes and started making a daily to-do list and it changed my life. i still do it daily, but i learned to pace myself. my daily goals range from big projects to tiny tasks like returning an email i've been meaning to get to. these days i've been using a Traveler's Company passport notebook, its super customizable and allows me the freedom to have my to-do lists, but also have space for random thoughts and notes, as well as a spot for doodles and sketches. i have adhd and if it doesn't get written down, i wont remember it, but also if i try to do it on my phone i get distracted. there's something incredibly satisfying about grabbing a pen/pencil and just dumping whats in your head onto paper in a way only you can understand later

Yes! Thank you for confirming my thoughts on digital note taking! I recently decided I'm totally done with trying to use digital calendars to keep myself organized. There's something so refreshing about putting it on paper and decorating the page with little doodles. Shayda Campbell has some wonderful journal drawing tutorials that I used to watch all the time. Then I decided to try a digital calendar thinking it would be more versatile. Technology is out of control. It's getting so overblown and overly complicated. I'm not a programmer and I don't want to take a 6 month course to learn how to use an app. Paper and pencil keeps my information where I want it, keeps my data safe and I feel so much better now! I didn't realize that tech was stressing me out so much!

Thank you Peter, I needed this. I appreciate you putting out a video about just being a creative person and that its actually normal for a creative to be scatter brained. I didn't realise you had put out a video about writing things down a while ago but for some reason, I had begun writing things down as a way to keep on top of things at work. Then it worked out so well for my work brain that I started doing it for my personal brain. 15 days later, I'm feeling different for sure.

Writing things down changed everything. It helped me 4x my business, but I do it mostly on a digital notebook as I cannot keep track of my physical note books and the clutter drives me nuts. I use Supernote, and it gives the tactile feel with the ability to organize however I want with multiple notes books for everything all at my finger tips.

It’s been shown that in an educational setting students who wrote their notes out vs students who used a computer or something digital, the students who wrote their notes were better able to grasp and keep the information. And you talking about the grand finale way of thinking is a wonderful way of putting things like that out and helping others, myself included, with ways to help calm the mind. A lot of days that is a very hard thing to do and anything helps.

I went from every other week of drawing, to a few days, to every other day. There's not a lot of pressure to fill a 3.5 x 5,5 inches page compared to 8.5 x 11 inches. I actually feel amazing and a lot of my anxiety over NOT drawing or accomplishing anything has gone away.

Wow. Listening to you describe feeling stoked on an idea one day, but doing 3 other things before doing it, so by the time you get to the amazing idea the next day, you're no longer stoked on it so don't do it ... one of the most relatable things I've ever heard someone say on RU-vid, or in life! And it's something I'm re-struggling with (re-struggling?) the last few months with reaching the 1 year milestone of going full time in starting my own business, but being far too familiar with the snowball effect you described that keeps happening! Thank you Peter! Definitely going to implement this note taking to try and clear my mind and see my goals more clearly, without letting my own brain run my ideas off the road. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.

Thanks for sharing Pete! I agree so much, wholeheartedly that physically writing is great and feels great for the soul. In a time when my life is feeling chaotic it’s an easy control, where I can slow down and concentrate on my thoughts, “my thoughts”, without distractions. Shit, I’m going to go write right now. Thanks again, Pete and I hope you and your family are doing well.

I started Dot Journaling about 3 years ago. It’s exactly like you said… I get it onto paper, and it unloads it from my mind. I lose the stress of trying to keep that ball in the air. Get an idea… write it down. It’s safely stowed away for later. Very helpful.

ADHD Pretty much destroyed much of my life into my late 40’s then meds zombied me, I was a constant firework BUT when I took the plunge to come of meds I started writing notes, on paper, on my ipad , just on anything. Years later, no meds, controlled firework displays as and when required and it’s partly thanks to taking daily notes, it’s provided a daily routine, it helps feed my need for dopamine, I can now exist amongst you all at peace with myself. Thats Peter for sharing this great and simple thing with your power to influence, you’re doing good!

A friend of mine does this and gave me a notebook to try it a little over a year ago and it's honestly been a game changer. It's a combination of to-do list, working memory, and journal/thought space. Love that I've kept up with it because it's been so helpful

Sounds cheesy but I started doing this about 2 years ago as well, I now keep a pocket notebook and 2 other journals and it has literally changed my life. Sketching in them as well has added SUCH a personal touch. Highly recommend

I’ve put a notebook in my bag for so long and I think I’ve put half a drawing on one page. But the idea of it is definitely something I love lol my mind kinda hasn’t let me slow down. I think it’s time to really dial that in.

10:21 -10:28 sounds exactly like what goes through my head daily trying to think of new ideas 😂. I’ve got to try this notebook idea! Having calm in the chaos sounds like a great takeoff to carrying around a pen and a notebook! Thanks for a great video as always Peter!!!

@PeterMcKinnon I totally get it! As someone with ADHD, I have the hardest time focusing, brain is always in 100 different directions, ideas come and go, easily distracted, I could keep going! It's funny in seeing this video as I started journaling and man does it feel good, to just stop! Just to sit there and write and forces the brain to slow down. I have a much easier time getting thoughts to paper this way! Thank you another amazing video! ✌️

Thank you Peter for video. Completely agree with you, it helps managage things in life, not only in creative processes, but also in personal life. I am journaling for decades - and for me this process is like a meeting with psychotherapist. Some how when you put words on paper, answers start coming. So yeah, highly recommend to any one at least try to write a journal for some moment.

Holy cow, Batman! Geez! I obviously have good taste…loving that RU-vid thought I might like your channel and episode. They would be SO RIGHT!!!! The flipping validation you’ve just given me goes far beyond anything you could imagine. After hearing you describe yourself, it was the first time anyone described me! “What?! (Insert jaw dropping) How… What…. I mean…you should write a book!” is the typical response to all had to deal with medically and life in general. The super rare everything that’s followed me has-somehow horrifically-took just about all my “me”. Creative, joyful & finding the silly-amidst the less than desirable circumstances where I feel like I’m stuck in hell-is my thang. After having become a poster child for rare this and rare, that medically & actually still smiling, I became livid as my normal creative tendencies came across as crazy to those who simply couldn’t understand. Thank you for literally describing me, as you did yourself. All the extraneous noise has disappeared and I now see what I’ve always seen-and kept trying to get others to see-I’m uniquely amazing and loving. Every gift I have I LOVE dancing through it and blessing as many as I can. That, is a HUGEEEEEEE gift you’ve given me. 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼 Thanks!!! 🎆

It's been roughly two years since I've carried a Field Notes notebook. I recall how daily writing and sketching would help me better understand my creative process and how to build upon it. The part about slowing things down hits home and reminds me to let the inner voice, imagination, thoughts, and feelings pour onto paper wherever and whenever. Thanks for sharing your uplifting experience.

I have had several note books for years. One for things I need to do and one for my thoughts and ideas. The best part is when you write you are not distracted by notifications and other digital distractions.
