I have a gazillion pens and notebooks and I love making ‘TO DO’ lists, which we all know is overwhelming. HOWEVER, I have found that making an ‘I DID’ list instead of a ‘TO DO’ list is much more validating, rewarding, and motivating. Write down the little accomplishments throughout the day and it feels better. A personal high five. You’ll realize how much you actually do. I don’t think we really ‘forget’ what needs to be done anyway, we just choose not to remember it if that makes sense. At the end of the day you can go to sleep knowing even if there is only 1 or 2 things on your I DID list, it was an ok day. But try it. Give yourself credit for all the little things you do. I bet you’ll surprise yourself!

Hi Peter! It's been over a year since this video came out and I just want to share that I finally finished doing this for 365 days! Looking back, the little steps I did every day helped me achieve a lot of cool things in the past year. Landed a new job, a side gig doing photography in my free time and a lot of other achievements. It was thanks to this video I was able to pull myself out of the pandemic. Thank you :)

I started doing this a few years back because I noticed my cousin brought a notebook everywhere. Accomplished so much because of it. It reintroduced me to doodling which led to drawing, full-color drawing with oil markers, then to painting. It then led me to write my own book and challenged me to draw a children's alphabet book within a week. Helped me learn Italian and currently learning Japanese.

My ADHD is so bad sometimes that I have to write out a to do list for even just the next hour as I get up, go to the kitchen, put the kettle on, go to the bathroom, make tea, get a snack etc. Like everything has to be planned out sometimes or I will just forget and get distracted. Not to mention all the to do lists of actual tasks and work that I need to do. I can definitely vouch for the to-do list, it basically helps me function.

I suffered from depression a while ago and I couldn't get anything done at all. My thoughts were like a giant ball of chaos, lost my job, wife cheated on me, best friend died from cancer, had to take care of my dog... and on and on and on. This is where I got the suggestion from my doctor to take a pen and a piece of paper and write down all that Chaos in my head. And that's what I did and still do to this day only that I've gotten through with the depression and now the writing is more like a great habit to capture ideas, thoughts and to do lists. Simply taking a few minutes of the day to sit down and write, really can bring some order into that chaos, that procrastination or creative struggle. It helped me a lot.

Dude... The whole thing of describing "Too much to do and focus on, so I end up doing NOTHING" Literally describes a symptom of conditions like ADHD. I know that feeling too damn well.
@JustinBradleyPhotographer
@JustinBradleyPhotographer 2 года назад
Dude exactly! I was just explaining to my wife how many people are not in control of their lives. Think about it.... Are you reactive or proactive? Do you wake up or do you set an alarm the night before to control what time you wake up? Do you prepare breakfast knowing you will be hungry or do you prepare breakfast when you get hungry? If you are only reacting to your environment are you really in control of your life? You have to be proactive and take control of your life or it will control you.
@speliotis
@speliotis 2 года назад
right on Brother Justin....
@highasheaven9239
@highasheaven9239 2 года назад
I don't agree with this, because setting an alarm is being proactive, choosing the time at which you wake up. Same thing for the breakfast, most people get hungry after a full night of fasting, should I not get hungry to be proactive? If it rains, is it bad that I take my coat? That's reactive, but it's not a bad reactive, it's just adapting to my environment. I would say that being reactive is waiting for things to happen when you could make them happen, because I don't think that every reaction is bad, most are actually good, but not when you consider this to be the normal behavior.
@JustinBradleyPhotographer
@JustinBradleyPhotographer 2 года назад
@@highasheaven9239 It was an example, nor did I necessarily say it was bad, nor did I offer my opinion. It was simply an observation, and a thought provoking question, any notion of it being negative is imposed entirely by you. Everything is not meant to be black and white. I suppose you could assume I'm one way by my comment, but not for certain. If you would have just asked I would have told you that I sincerely believe the key in that statement is finding balance. What parts of your life are better served reactive, dronelike, versus other moments. I sincerely believe the more reactive you are, the faster you blow through life and the more often you will comment, "damn the years are flying by." In the sense I am speaking of, I consider the act of setting your alarm as proactive, hitting snooze reactive. There are people without jobs who wake up when their body says they're done, immediately goes to the bathroom to evacuate waste, eats food because they are hungry and eventually showers because they smell. Versus the person that goes against the temptation to be lazy that we all feel. You have to take control of your day to slow down life, to be able to stop and take it all in. And I thought it goes without saying that obviously there are things in life that are out of your control. Like I'm not going to stand on a railroad track and let it hit me just to prove I'm not reactive. Nor would anyone. I didn't say it because I thought it was obvious

This is the best short therapist, though one thing to know, very important; - Sometimes and mostly you need someone or something to control your life first before you take the hold of it and start to control by yourself. Great example is kids, they need to be controlled before they take the controller else they will doom themselves.

Talk about putting things off... I've been putting off watching this video for a while, and I finally just finished it. I started reading Atomic Habits recently, and more and more I'm realizing that a lot of the things people talk about for leading successful, meaningful lives, really all just boil down to our daily habits. I really like "starting somewhere is better than not starting at all." That's absolutely right. For years now, I've been stuck, not getting enough done because I'm always trying to outsmart myself in a way, and do something really big and grand, meanwhile I constantly put off the smaller, more bite-sized and manageable stuff.

I’ve been doing it in my head for the past 30 years. It’s awesome when you stare at that mirror at the end of the day and go “well done John, good for you”. I’ve tried doing the notebook thing but have realized over time it’s just not for me. What does work is getting up early, making or getting a coffee, sitting down away from your computer or phone and just thinking about the day and what you want to get done, some I mark as stretch goals and work at them. It’s not perfect but it seems to work.

I started doing this like a year and a half ago when we went into lockdown. I found that doing it on my phone is more productive for me personally. But either way, it’s been extremely helpful in getting stuff done but also in just feeling like I’m moving forward.

Me again. This has changed my life! I tried daily but I would have to move things forward daily. So I used a spread for one week. Everything went down on those two pages. What a relief. No more anxiety over what I haven’t done. . It is all there in my book. No set amount each day. Just keep crossing them off day and evening..THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!

I love notebooks! I make time every morning to list my yearly goals in one notebook, then daily tasks in another. I like the idea of a smaller notebook to carry around for the daily tasks. It’s so good for productivity! And I think 5 tasks is probably more manageable than 8

This is actually a really cool idea. I struggle with keep a straight mind, like you said - I will sit down with the intent of doing something but I just don't. I have tried todo lists but I spent more time making and planning my day than doing what matters. Bought myself a nice fountain pen and an A6 book (thats the right size, yeh?!) and I'm going to give it a go. Would love one of Gimsmo's pens but my bank may hate be bit too much. Be good to have an update on this to see how you've been doing!

I've been doing daily tasks for years! I always believed in the power of holding a pen and actually writing to-do stuff on a paper. I use the same method with my Autistic son. we call it "the plan" .. he wakes up excited to read what's written in the plan, and REALLY enjoys crossing things out or writing "DONE!" next to the completed task. It's a very useful "Applied Behavior" tool to organize thoughts and I strongly believe that, over time, it teaches discipline. This is a great video Peter - Thank you.

Thank you so so much for the awesome idea & inspiration. I'm on day 88 today for the daily 8CT after watching your vid & although it is such a simple idea, it's a life changer. I have never been this up to date & productive in work & life. I'd say to all those just starting out, honor the words you write to yourself! Thanks again!

This is interesting. I lived through the age of the pen and paper…taking notes. Now years later a thirty something RU-vidr introduces a concept of basically a refined to do list. You live long enough you see things repeat themselves and in an age of false connection and likes and dislikes..( no grey area). It’s so nice to see the old traditions are brought back to life through you and your discovering a new way of focusing your valuable energies. It’s not a new concept but reconnecting with ideas that work is a good thing.

Just wanted to say thanks. I have tried several productivity methods over the years and while it's still early days, the method in this video has helped me. I am crossing off day 13. While getting more stuff done is always good, I think the big value for me is having an easier time switching tasks. I have never been much of a multitasker. But, with the paper method and having this benchmark against myself every day, I know what to expect and what's coming up next. It makes it easier. Super rad. Thanks again.

Writing is one of my favorite things to do and I have been Journaling for most of my life on and off. I currently have 5 different journals that I use for different things. I find joy in it and so excited for you and this new journey that you are on!! Also, as you mentioned it is great to look back at where you were to where you are currently through your own thoughts, lists and handwriting. 😃

It's been known for a long time that the more physically you record an idea, the deeper the neural pathways laid down by it. Writing it down with a pen works more than typing on a keyboard, and typing on a keyboard works more than poking a surface, which barely works at all. That's why so much slips through your brain - because you're not _interacting_ with your ideas anymore. The more physical the contact, the deeper the connection and the more likely you'll remember and engage with it.

I have always thought that physically writing things down helps me remember to do them and get them done, my only problem is that I end up doing this on scrap paper or different notebooks and then it's just everywhere. Notion has worked wonders for me though just because I always have my phone or computer on me so I always have access to my....well everything.
