Gardeners math word problem: I planted 600-700 on 2/3 of my front garden, so I need how many for the remaining 1/3? the math would say 300-350… So what did I buy? 1200 🙃 Not an error (Math is my thing)..the extra was for the many spaces that “need” enhancement . Call it catalog-induced gardeners math. There are worse habits 🙃

Ya I wasn’t going to plant anymore. But, then someone told me tulips were half price so of course I had to go get some. Then, when I got there I found the shrubs were on sale for $1! So I got 4 landscape roses, 3 spirea and 1 weigela and 155 tulips. My knees are mad at me now.

Yes, a bag of 100 bulbs seems like a lot until you start planting...I wish I had ordered more! The daffs will be so welcome at the end of the long, dark Wisconsin winter.

So true! Last year I purchased about 100 bulbs & it ended up only being enough to fill 2 small 2x3 foot areas in either side of my porch steps, & then a couple rows in the cutflower farm.

oh I can relate! my property is really small and rocky so I thought I will have hard time of planting 100 bulbs.. ha ha I ran out of bulbs quicker than I thought I would! Isn't amazing how we can underestimate the space? :)

Not me: Spending the last month frantically drawing out garden plans & trying to figure out where I'm going to put all the bulbs I picked up on clearance (in + to the ones I ordered online) because I already had my bulb orders mapped out Also not me: Re-planning for 300 in the back yard & 200 for the front yard- then planting 500 daffodil bulbs, & haven't even made it to the front yard yet! 😄😄😄 I feel you!

A neighbor garden! I have one of those! I call it the good neighbor slope. Only 1/3 mine but I adopted the whole thing. I hope the new neighbors coming in a few months like the idea. Going to plant daffodils there too to help win them over.

We have lived in our house for 30+ years ( zone 5 in Illinois) I have planted tons of bulbs over the years. Yard is so gorgeous in the spring! I still tuck in a few each year here and there. I have 3/4 of an acre. The squirrels drive me nuts too......I live near the woods and have mature oaks in my yard with lots of acorns😩😩😩

This will be looking so pretty in the Spring! We have a giant Norway Maple in front of our house, lots of dry shade. I let Lily of the Valley colonize there, but this Fall I finally made a real effort with bulbs as well. Used some daffodils, that I dug up in other areas. Then I ordered 150 light blue Muscari, I thought that would be a lot. It really just scratched the surface, will order more next year, if they look good.

Love lamium too. Those of us with big properties learn to appreciate ground covers that spread in dry shade. It minimizes endless weeding! Beautiful day there, Erin, for mid-November! Thanks for sharing!!

I live in an area that has heavy red clay soil. I planted 75 tulip and daff bulbs last year and I had 7 come up. This coming year I'm excited to try Dahlias.

I have the same sort of soil in 7a. Fingers crossed that the bulbs can handle it. Mostly daffs in the ground. Thinking to try tulips and crocus in pots to foil those pesky squirrels! Happy fall planting!

Have the same sort of soil in my 7a garden. Hoping my bulbs can handle it and be successful. Put mostly daffs in the ground and will be trying tulips and crocus in pots to foil those pesky squirrels! Could something have dug up and eaten/removed those bulbs you had planted? This past spring I found some beautiful crocus just randomly growing in the lawn which I did not put there! Seems I've read a comment before of someone planting like 100s of crocus and then seeing the neighbor's lawn blooming with them the next spring 😯. Best of luck this year 🙋 No idea how this double reply happened☺! So Sorry!

How sad after all your work! I have clay in zone 8a and have good results with large yellow daffodils and Thalias. A great fall blooming bulb for clay in the south is Schoolhouse lilies (aka Oxblood, yuck) they practically grow in cement. 😀

I have Georgia red clay too. Never had a problem with bulbs. Maybe squirrels got them?

I planted 245 bulbs and though they were plenty. Now, I want more, and big box stores already got rid of all of them 😭 I'm in Northwest suburbs in IL. If someone knows of a big deal let me know.

This is going to sound crazy, but I used 200 white, 3 1/2" golf tees to mark where we had been as we planted bulbs. We used the auger, placed the bulb and fertilizer and then covered up, placed the tee in the spot and moved on. Not an original idea,__I had seen it on another garden page.

I about broke my finger trying to use the auger around tree roots lol. It got caught and whipped the drill around🤦🏻‍♀️. The lamium in my dry shade is traveling everywhere! I have to yank it out periodically. It will look beautiful in the spring. Tête-à-tête is one of my favorites! ☺️

Thus the reason I will not plant bulbs!! I know me…I’d plant hundreds or thousands of different bulbs in an area in my back yard & wait for the beauty & it would be a Big ole mess! And I’d have killed myself & hate it. 😬😂

I think cyclamen and snow drops would look lovely too. Columbine, lily of the valley, ferns would be nice as well underneath this tall spruce. Well done ...it will be a nice Easter display in spring.

This area is looking absolutely beautiful, just a well-done, naturalistic setting. Love it! Have you ever looked into phlox divaricata? It’s a woodland phlox that I am in love with. I think you would really enjoy the variety called May Breeze. It is almost white, with a hint of ice blue, so gorgeous. I have a few, and plan on adding more to some of my woodland areas. No idea if it is hardy to your area, but it might be perfect in the right location! 💗

Hi Erin. This not related to your bulb video but dahlia storage. I have my dahlias in wood shaving (animal bedding) just like you did and I’m already seeing some shriveling. Do you add moisture to your animal bedding or just mist? Sorry if I missed that direction I watched your two part video from last year.

I bet the Lamium will do very well over winter. We have several massive patches of Lamium in shady woods by our house. I also LOVE Epimedium and recommend it as a shade-loving plant to anyone who will listen.

Just curious but aren't you afraid that the squirrels are going to dig up and eat all of your bulbs over winter? We live in Kentucky and squirrels are the most aggravating thing that I deal with. Thank you for all of your knowledge and sharing it with us.

I planted some geranium macrorrhizum and they just fizzled away. Gone. Wonder what I did wrong. Zone 7b. Hoping they'll come back in the spring.

Me too in 7a. I just transplanted some very weak looking plants to a shadier spot. We'll see if they survive the transplant. I think maybe in warmer climates they just get fried.

Can't wait Erin to see the gorgeous waves of daffodils nodding their pretty heads in your garden this coming spring. I don't use an auger to dig my holes but use a pro-plugger and looks like both methods save time and our backs!

It's going to be so beautiful!! I planted 750 bulbs this fall (which I thought was overwhelming!), guess not, after watching this video...lol. Off topic, first trip to WI this past weekend and toured U of WI Arboretum and Olbrich Botanical Gardens...wouldn't it be fun if you gave us a tour...I would love to see particularly Olbrich in the Spring and/or Summer.

I’ve always read that daffodils, alliums, snowdrops & snowflakes are avoided by deer/rabbits/squirrels (bitter tasting?). Tulips & crocus are a different story (zone 6) I cage them at planting and even then the crocus flowers became “rabbit candy” the day after they bloomed. Next year, I’m trying 1) a wire cloche for the crocus 2) botanical tulips (which I’m told are less interesting to critters). If all else fails, I’ll replace with ones that do succeed here without a lot of fuss.

I read daffodils get left alone as the entire plant including bulb is poisonous to squirrels, rats, deer etc. that’s why I plant them! 🌼

Every year I ask myself why did I order so many bulbs, only to be inspired to plant more in other areas. There is just too much competition to buy bulbs (and spring ephemerals) right now from wholesalers that sell retail, particularly for woodland spaces. Who has the bandwidth to order bulbs in the spring?

Hello. Under my walnut tree in the shade in zone 7 I have tiarella (which looks gorgeous as a river of bloom), geranium maxiriza (spelling?) and native ginger and a few ferns. In researching what to plant in this area, I realized that native plants do the best. And so pretty. Good luck.
