When I first learned of this place, I became obsessed. It is the most mysterious and impossible to reach place in the American West.
So, I set out backpacking to learn more about the people and things who once lived here.
What I found, might change the way you think about American History.
Make sure to subscribe for the following episodes, and a deeper dive into this incredible place.

I live in Colorado and around 1979 I was in high school I saw a black and white reel to reel film in geology class that showed what Glen Canyon was like before it was filled. That video exists somewhere. It was amazing and broke my heart. It is one of the most memorable things I’ve ever seen.

One of my most treasured possessions is a book from 1963 “the place no one knew” by Eliot Porter and published by the sierra club. Library of Congress catalogue number- 66-15340. It won the Carey-Thomas award in 1964. The photos are amazing . I hope you can find a copy somewhere even to just look at the photos. Duuuuude this is epic. I didn't know there was all this history under the lake! Why would they do this? I looked it up and the project was approved in April 1956. Why was this such a priority then? They clearly knew they would be flooding history away, and then did just that. Also I am seeing the original purpose of the lake, to "control flooding" is now obsolete. So it can be drained yet there is strong opposition to that, for now. I like how you ended the video, it's true! One day these canyons will be revealed again

Energy + water storage was the main goal on paper. It is the 2nd largest reservoir in the US in a very resource constrained area. Thats all they cared about back then . However, it has dramatically backfired on the water front. Due to the huge surface area, we lose an insane amount of water to evaporation here every year. It's a large part of why the Colorado has diminished. Yep it'll come back. Question is- how soon
@coolbaj
@coolbaj 5 дней назад
Wow that's wild. Looking it up, the reservoir was at its highest in 1983 and is now 185 feet down from that highest fill. I didn't know that much had already evaporated! That's 40 years to evaporate 185 feet. Not sure how deep it is now but I'd estimate another 20+ years to evaporate the vast majority... I see another article saying on June 13 this year, 40,000 acre-feet of water leaked out of the reservoir 🤔

Beautiful scenery. I watched a documentary, probably on YT, that had clips of old footage of the canyon before it was flooded. It was incredibly beautiful. So sad it’s hidden but nice it’s re-emerging. But that will be at the expense of people in the west who need the water. Btw, I wondered if your tent was anchored in a way not visible? I’ll bet the winds up there can be fierce at times…

While I can agree Glen Canyon was beautiful and it is a great loss to have it swamped currently, Boating, especially house boating on Lake Powell is still one of the most amazing experiences in the WORLD. Get upriver from Page to sections like Rock Canyon and Escalante and you are literally cut off from the outside world. No cell phones or internet, less people. The experience is surreal. It must have been almost holy to the ancients. It still is to many. If there is anything to be said for the water, it is that it has made this area accessible to so many more than would go there w/out it. Great work on the video, love the channel. I'm not a geologist, but its fun to speculate. To me it looks like that entire area was completely submerged under violent waters. Water would have had to be higher then the tallest plateaus. It all looks like water erosion that carved out the weakest points in the bedrock. The jaggedness of everything seems like perhaps this was a "quick event" and it didn't have time to make everything round and smooth like water that was flowing for hundreds of thousands of years. Keep the videos coming, love these!
@0U8123MTA3
@0U8123MTA3 7 дней назад
I agree that the sharp edges and formations like arches indicate that long term water and wind erosion did not carve what we see around the world. We are stunned because of how unusual the geology is. I looked at the Moon which does not have water and yet the geology looks carved. Same with Mars where Valles Marineris has no inlet or outlet for water erosion. The canyons and their "tributaries" look like damage from gigantic sparks of some kind. It appears to me, as others have noted, that large scale electrical forces were used by an intelligent influence. Based on your reference to a world wide flood event, I surmise we both know who the "intelligent influence" is.

You walk too close to the edge, but what is life without a little risk. Your life flashed before all of our eyes as you jumped in tot he water!! 😱 I think given the water is gradually receding, and water has a way of preserving things, there is a chance some of the historic ruins and artifacts may be still intact. Probably important to document as much as possible as the waters peel back, as the exposure will have them decay quite rapidly. Can't wait to see more.

The drone shots in your videos are an example of exactly what drones should be used for... catching and recording absolutely stunning views like yours. Fantastic to see, keep up the great work. They make me want to expore these kind of places and camp like you do, just enjoying nature 🙂

The Escalante River was always my favorite at Lake Powell. It would take you weeks to follow it all the way to the town of Escalante. These days, the water only goes up 1/2 mile before the river dries up. The river used to actually flow into the lake. It it extremely remote and almost impossible to traverse.

I grew up in that area from 1957-67 during the years Glen Canyon Dam was being built. We drove often to see the progress of the dam and my dad loved fishing/camping at Lee's Ferry. They wouldn't build it today & cover those sacred historic sites. We hear talk at times of taking down the dam but don't know if it'll ever happen.

I really enjoy your videos. I have a serious ambition to do what you do, and explore that wilderness. Just the idea of stumbling across some ancient place, just to stand there and feel deep time around me. Amazing.

For a renewal power source, people forget just how destructive hydroelectricity is. You need huge reservoirs which flood valleys and canyons, displace both humans and animals, interrupt the natural flow of the river for aquatic animals, sometimes even depriving large sections of the lower river of water. The Colorado River (as I understand it) barely makes it to the sea anymore. In Australia, the Snowy Hydro scheme & other dams has decreased the flow of the Murray, Murrumbidgee and Snowy Rivers anywhere from 40-80% (depending on how much rain there has been).

Thank you soo much for the hike into E.din Yes, like the grand, I'm sure there's stuff in Glen they really don't want us to see. Those arches under water looking down on them was from another world. Now that I battle with the Plantar sore heel syndrome, don't think Ronnie's rump will be doing the hike for real. Great job.👌😎
