Why all reviewers wasting so much time talking about cameras of laptops. Nobody uses them! Nobody will notice if the camera missing. I'm so glad that Huawei put the camera out of the way.
In universities and companies, you need it all the time. For private use, you use your phone ofc. Macbook in that regard is the right choice since you don't want your superiors or partners to check out your nostrils.
People who think taping their laptop camera (or hiding it in this case) increases their privacy when they still have a working microphone on their laptop, as well as a working camera and microphone on their phone, and enabled location settings on both are fooling themselves.
EvilPlaya Sure, it's one less camera that can be hacked, but it's at the expense of your convenience and is nothing more than security theatre. If it actually helped protect your privacy, then maybe it's worth sacrificing your convenience for it, but it's useless if all it then means is that the hacker has to hack your _other_ camera. So what's the point?
@@赖凯婧 that's not true at all.... only the obnoxious ones get noticed... I'm american and think this laptop is pretty sweet! I hope you realize that not all americans are asshats and that not all americans hate foreign products
what if you go sit at a different table? has the "viewing angles" changed? wtf are you talking about you robot? so if you want your screen higher you buy a higher laptop? does 1-5cm make a difrence?
IF YOU SIT AT A HIGHER TABLE DO YOU NOD LESS? you are not thinking about this are you? 2 cm at the bottom of your laptop doesn't mater ! you just like the look and cant think of a practical reason. IT DOESN'T MATTER ! the bezel does nothing its all about where you put your laptop while using it.
@@Dragonsey1 @FunkyFreak is just a troll. I'll never understand why people are Apple fans. Very little innovation these days, Android comes out with more new features that Apple then copies. And you pay a premium for a name. They use off the shelf parts to boot, it was one thing when they developed their own RISC processors (though I still was not a fan but at least respected their work in that realm).
@@crazycdn8327 As an Apple fan, while I agree that most of their products are overpriced because of the name ESPECIALLY the MacBook Pro ($2k-$4k for a $1k laptop is stupid) but the premium build quality, design and experience of most of their products somewhat justifies the price of some of their products. My MacBook Pro 13in is a powerhouse and ever since I used the trackpad, I cant use any other laptop's trackpad. The Apple watch is undeniably the best on the market. The new iPad Pro/Pencil combo overall beats anything on the market. Samsung has either beat or tied Apple when it comes to their phones and wireless earbuds but you shouldn't be surprised why a lot of people like Apple. They certainly arent perfect but when they do things right, it shows.
@@dcdc5173 As a half-year user, I say the computer is very good. I can only say that there are not too many quality problems. If you want to buy it, I suggest you go to the physical store first and experience it for yourself.
I sold my 2017 13" MacBook Pro yesterday and purchased the HMB X Pro today. Zero regrets. I'm so over Apple and their overpriced crap. The whole reason I sold it was the keyboard and screen issues that I didn't want to deal with.
So sick of 16:9 displays. Really glad to see some manufacturers move away from it finally. It's one of the huge reasons why I'll never consider an XPS, for example.
Pelle Sanders For literally everything besides video, 16:9 is too cramped vertically to be comfortable to use. I write a lot of code and it's just too narrow of a ratio.
I have a 2018 MacBook Pro 15" and I love it. It's actually my only Apple product as I otherwise use Android for everything else. I work in IT and I use Windows every single day for work and it's just nice to get away. I also love Final Cut Pro X. That being said, I've always said the Matebook X Pro is the best Windows Ultrabook and this video further proves that point. Great job!
I'm thinking about getting a macbook pro the next month too. I plan to use it only for browsing and etc. so only daily usage, not any heavy work stuff. But i wonder if i should choose 13 inch one or the 15 inch one. The reason I'm unsure is i am not sure if 13 inch is too small or 15 inch is too big. What do you think i should choose ?
If you aren't using FCPx literally any comparatively priced machine will do everything in the world much faster and likely have close to double the specs.
Evan, for the price of a macbook pro 13" you can pick up a laptop with an 8th gen i7 and a GTX 1060 which will be over twice as fast at everything. It is extremely true.. and very sad that people would pay over $1300 for hardware that should cost under $600 for what build quality? they solder on ssds and ram.. they glue in the battery everything about it is designed to throw up all over itself if the track pad fails name any other major laptop that will not power on if the pointing device fails... Here's a little example of "thinking differently" here's how the keyboard gets from the keys to being usable.. it goes.. keyboard -> logic board -> track pad board -> logic board as usable Noticing perhaps something a tiny bit odd about that?
Benjamin Hale mate those laptops your spouting with i7/1060 under a 1300 budget get like 3 hours of battery life. No ideal for someone who’s working all day
The MateBook camera actually doesn't really look that bad if you can tolerate the angle and placement. Well, that's what you get for a near bezel-less design.
I almost never use webcams, but the quality on this one looked fine for the few occasions I would actually use one, plus that camera placement is top-tier.
ultrabooks are overpriced for what they are. If you aren't a stickler for thinness there are plenty of laptops that are much cheaper that will give you better performance.
Kronocide very false! Ultrabooks have heavy underclocked cpus compared to desktops! If you were to get the same specs, you can make a more powerful pc for less money, Ultrabooks are meant for portability, desktops for more intensive work!
An alternative to the Macbook is gonna (hopefully) create the same impact that Ryzen had with intel. Competition is good for the industry and the consumer always wins. I just hope Apple doesn't get stupid and sues Huawei for patent infringement or whatever because of how much of a resemblence the Matebook X Pro has to the Macbook. I'd definetly consider this laptop over Apple's ultrabook offering simply on the keyboard alone... touch screen is an added bonus! =3 Impeccable review, keep at it.
Apple does not need to sue them, the computer looks like a macbook.......However,. trust me the Huawei device may be a very decent computer. But it really is no macbook pro beater.
I see so many comments on warranty issues with the matebook. I purchased mine thru the Microsoft store and the store reps said they handle the warranty. That could mean they send it out for repairs on your behalf. But at least they will help you out.
I played with one in an MS store yesterday and was quite impressed tbh. Security and privacy fears aside, I would probably be interested if they made a 15" model
Security concerns? What security concerns, it’s 2018 and Windows forces security updates at least once a month. I understand the privacy concerns, but if you know how to use a computer, you can disable all telemetry (A program called Shutup10 will do this with one click) I don’t use Windows, but cmon man
I'd like to see a laptop from Huwai with a Ryzen CPU personally but I really like the direction the Matebook went, it's almost perfect. As much as I love USB C, I'm still going to need at least 2 type A ports for my uses.
Great review my dude. Dedicated graphics (that too decent ones) in such a form factor is pretty darn incredible. I don't get why laptop webcams are not nearly as good as the worst smartphone cameras at least.
The macbook speakers sounds very directional with heavy emphasis on bass. The Matebook sounds very omni-directional, like surround sound with noticeable less deep bass, however the surround sound imho wins over muffled punchy bass.
Clorex Bleach The MacBook's are better for a single user. MateBook's speakers will fill an entire room. Decent base, but the Mac's is definitely a step up and NOT synthetic sounding.
I've not heard the Matebook in person so cannot and won't judge it, (and really don't want to form an opinion from a recording of it) but the MacBook Pro's speakers are superb and have a very rich, room filling sound, at least in my opinion. I guess it is subjective for each user.
I bought this laptop recently and I'm quite impressed by its built quality and performance. The dedicated graphic, screen resolution, 14 inch in a 13 inch chassi, less than 15 mm thin, great keyboard, great sound, USB-A, excellent battery life.
Sad to see some people bashing on huawei for being a Chinese company and privacy concerns instead of focusing on the product itself, I just don't get why the Chinese government would want to "spy" on people that are not Chinese citizens? I mean Microsoft with windows 10 telemetry, google, and the NSA is who you should be concerned about.
Yeah I agree. People have no problem with using Google and Facebook but they have oh so many privacy concerns as soon as they hear about a Chinese company. If you use Google and Facebook and use internet without a VPN, you have no privacy, alright?
China isn't spying through Huawei or on the majority of Americans, but they are spying en masse on business in California, mainly related to the tech sector to steal trade secrets, patents, and other intellectual property. They also do spy heavily on the US government, just like Russia, and just like we do right back to them. China and Russia are just kinda greedy with the stealing though.
Jack Wang they have a lot of reasons to spy on Americans. But unless you're a US official spying isn't as a big of deal, lots of companies do it to a degree. BUT the are other problems with buying from Chinese companies, first these companies engage in ALOT of IP theft. Yeah, lots of companies copy designs and stuff, but these companies do it on a whole new level, they straight up hack into companies servers and steal designs, and it's state sponsored, so the Chinese government does it as well. Did you know that many companies have to even hand over their IP to the china Just to do business there? but the biggest reason not to buy these devices is to not support the Chinese government which hates us, the West(US, Europe, ect) these companies operate as an arm of their government to make money, steal IP, and get stronger. And if you ask what's wrong with supporting the Chinese government? They kill and imprison their own people for saying something bad about their president..
Very well presented and thorough review. Particularly the emphasis on distinctive features like the i7/discrete graphics card and comparative performance. Nice to see someone who doesn't automatically give Apple a head start simply because it's Apple! I just ordered one at the weekend and due in the big brown UPS van today!
I just received my Matebook X Pro and I am shocked at the build quality. So effing slick, thin, and solid. Those edges though.. plus the screen god damn. My only nitpick complain is that because it's so thin the fan runs some times, and the back section under the screen gets hot. But I checked all the temperatures and the temps are well managed, cpu was in good temps. I'm very excited about this purchase. You will not get a 3:2 screen like this with any other laptop even if you pay more.
Hey, could you comment on lag (when you have let's say a heavy software running with 10 browser tabs and 2 youtube tabs running etc?), Battery life and the heat after say 5+ hours of use?
I haven't used that extensively yet and I also have the i5, I am prettyy sure it runs very smoothly for both versions though. Most I've done is listen to music, have 15 tabs open, and also play Shellshock Live(tank game), and it handled well for no graphics lol. So the cpu heating up isn't a problem, it handles that well, the only "problem" is that the laptop uses the frame itself to cooldown, so you will feel the laptop heating up and sometimes to top keyboard heating up. That's just how it is for a slim ultrabook. Otherwise my cpu temps are always good. Screen is quite impressive for sure.
Yes I’m a Mac user, however your review was excellent. There isn’t anything wrong pointing out a product that listens to consumers, and builds a device that works the way consumers want it to work. After all it’s for us, the consumers. IMO this laptop makes using windows “easier”, also if you have their phone, they have software that recognizes it, in almost the same way Apple ecosystem works. This comparison keeps me aware of what competing technology looks like. And helps me stay informed about the purchases I make in the future. Even if I don’t care about geekbench scores or specs.... Thank You. Great video.
I don't know why laptop manufacturers have no trouble removing usb ports, card readers and ethernet connections but won't dare remove the camera to the point where they end up putting it on the weirdest of places.
The Huawei may well be a great piece of hardware and doubtless is cheaper than the Mac, but it still runs Windows and that's a deal breaker for me. Not sure what the big deal is about a touch screen. I have one on a chromebook and rarely use it. Agreed (as does everyone who's used it) that Apple trackpad "rules". Why can't any other manufacturers seem to get that right. Love those small bezels on the HW. And that pop-up camera.
I agree, a game changer as I consider to renew my "old" macbook pro 2014. 2017/18 models from Apple are far than a good deal regarding quality and price. I'll definitivly give up Apple products regarding the big improvement competitors made at more affordable prices, as I did for my phone. This Huawei Matebook X pro seems to bring a lot of good features, good build quality, powerfull enought for my needs, and I have no problem to switch to Windows 10. This one will be my next laptop.
I own a Standard Matebook X with the i5, I didn't wait long enough for the Pro (i7)version ... HOWEVER i love MY standard Matebook X (without pro); ESPECIALLY THE FACT THERE IS NO FAN IN IT, its absolutely silent AND also the keyboard has got a backlight. I will never buy a Laptop without keyboard backlight, if you once had it you will always want one. I HATE about the matebook X that there is ONLY USB-C at it. I am happy to see there is classical USB at the pro Version!! A Dealbreaker for the X Pro is that there is a fan in it! I love my standard Mateboox X, no fan !
I have MateBook X ( i7 7500u, 8gb, 512gb ssd, gold color) , a previous version and this is such a huge !! update to MateBook line up. This is an amazing laptop.
There's a lot of cancerous comments down there, holy smokes. Anyways great review as always. The Matebook Pro looks great, I'm very impressed they managed to throw a mx150 in there as well, seems like a nice little ultrabook. I won't be trading my 15in MacBook Pro in for one, but I still think it's a great option, and it's always good to have more options out there.
I bought a 2011 MBP in 2015 for $350, added memory and SSD, thought a great deal, but then it burnt my lap, so sold it. I bought a late 2015 iMac 27 inch with 32GB memory at $1180, thought it was a great deal until I discover the 1TB mechanical drive cannot be upgraded to an SSD without potentially breaking the machine into a pile of garbage. I think OS X is by far the best OS giving you both the Unix core and a beautiful UI, but at this point, I cannot buy more Apple hardware, it's just purely insane how they sell them as fashion accessories rather than tools to get jobs done.
Ed Saucin yes, only time travelers know exactly how much they will need 3 years ahead of time. The “build quality” is pure farce if you can’t use the computer 3 years later because of lack of upgrade ability.
There are so many Linux OSs out there that put a focus on beauty. Elementary OS comes to mind, it looks just like OSX, but with the benefit of being Linux.
I totally agree with you on how this laptop is a great steap in the right direction. I love the fact that they put a GPU within this machine that wont throttle much due to the size of the machine itself. Not only does this low end GPU greatly improve the performance but it also keeps the thermals down. I honestly dont understand why Apple doesn't do this but I love how much power this sleek machines offers and for around the same price as a 13 inch MacBook pro
The Iris 655 in the Touchbar MacBook Pro is nearly just as fast as the MateBook X Pro's MX150. A competent integrated GPU provides a smoother user experience than the hybrid GPU system enabled by Nvidia Optimus found in the MXPro, because in the latter case the UI is rendered by the crappy UHD620.
Those feels when the first Mac that was designed by Jobs was so pathetic they had to nerf the IIgs to not be better than it. Jobs made bad computers too.
The difference in trackpad quality is truly massive. Any time I use a Windows laptop, I’m reminded of that. I’d also greatly prefer the butterfly switches to mushy keys, durability issues aside. My 2015 MacBook keyboard is still going strong.
Ugh. Another reviewer saying the Matebook "copied" the Macbook design. sure, they look similar but stop saying its a bad thing. In my opinion, if a company has a similar design after another company, but they do it better, its more of an enhancement, which is a good thing instead.
The h should not be silent. Huawei decided to promote it in the west using the silent h pronunciation. Idk if its either for the most part westerners genuinely just dont really know how to pronounce it or its because they've just got used to it.
Don't normally comment on youtube videos, but this is a quality review (and I've watched nearly all the matebook reviews out there and just bought one thanks to your detailed review). Also, you have a new subscriber, cheers from Australia.
I have played with this laptop at the Microsoft store. I love it, except for one thing, which is that I love the reliability of Mac OS and I love the Apple ecosystem. I have owned four Windows 10 machines and sold them all in the past three years. After a brief honeymoon, longer with the Surface Pro, I have gone back to Mac OS. If I was interested in a Windows machine the only one I would consider would be the 15-inch Matebook X Pro.
Windows still crash occasionally for one. The only program I have crashed on either of my two Macs is Google Chrome. Final Cut is so much more reliable and efficient than Premiere. I bought Final Cut X became I was sick if using Premier on a I7 GZ 16 GB 6th generation Samsung Flip as well as 2017 Surface Pro with similar, updated specs. Final Cut is wonderful. I had not used it after I stopped editing with version 6.
John Armwood you're using it wrong, I have two laptops an hp envy 2016, crashed once, and a Lenovo yoga 710 2017, it has never crashed, they're both buttery smooth
cruz Good for you. “You are using it wrong “. Yes you do need to work on your English usage but all kidding aside Mac OS is a smoother operating system. You most likely have never owned a Mac. By the way five minutes of “research” will lead you to discover that Chrome both crashes occasionally and is a resource hog. Many times the crashes are caused by extensions but some like chameleon, which allows me to download RU-vid videos is central to my workflow so I put up with the issues. Safari has never crashed in the nine years I have used it on a daily basis. It is all relative.
The SassyGuy most standard users dont know how to secure their pc and save files in places You can delete Them. So what happens is they have a lot of crap on their pc and they dont delete IT until they reset windows. That's why they think Windows is slow.
Octo true most of these average folks never heard of disk cleaner that you can find in properties in “this pc” or they probably never heard of CCleaner before.
Excellent review! I was looking for the experience of someone who edits with Premiere Pro on it, this has very much convinced me into getting the Matebook. Subscribed!
The camera placement I think it's also there because maybe the amount of people using the camera is too low compared with the white market, but maybe a removable camera you can use in the keyboard or take it to the top of the screen could be better. Regarding the keyboard, doing something like MSI did, partnering with a peripheral manufacturer could make a better track pad and keyboard. Nice review, fair points Greg. Video liked as always.
I LOVE that the screen is 3:2 aspect ratio (more vertical realestate). Actually it doesn't quite make sense that nearly all laptops are using 16:9 movie oriented aspect, when most people (although not all) primarily use a laptop for websurfing, writing, developing etc. Apple has 16:10 and that's a bit better, but 3:2 makes far more sense than 16:9
I’m just worry about longtime usage and support. I love Huawei and their work but there’s no real support for their tech if anything goes wrong. BestBuy GeekSquad isn’t even that smarter than an average pc builder. This is the reason that keeps me from buying their products. Is it me or the 7th i5 mbp 13 is around as powerful as this one???
Matebook X Pro uses an 8th gen i7 quad core vs 7th gen dual core. It should be a noticable difference when using anything multi-core. Day to day usage might not be noticable.
ABaumstumpf I agree that Apple has many problems with their tech but at least there is a store( albeit you have to pay to fix) rather than non. In the end no company is the best at everything.
I do like their phones but then again I never had to use their help and support and I'm pretty happy with the Nexus 6P (I need to replace the battery). At least their build quality seems good.
I had an older Huawei phone that functioned right up until the point when the updates got bigger than it's storage I'd say they can be pretty damn reliable.
It's quite a good deal in the US, but so expensive in Europe that I might as well go with the new MacBook Pro for pretty much the same price and enjoy the extra benefits.
ABaumstumpf Was expecting that question. So, here is the list: better camera placement, better speakers, 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports vs just 2, better CPU performance, more optimized / exclusive vsoftware (macOS, Final Cut Pro X), native eGPU support, etc. Do I need to continue?
Question for you: can you read? I am talking about prices in the EU and equally speced machines. So once again, camera on the top is objectively better, giving a more natural look. Regarding the specs and prices: Matebook X Pro i5-8250U, 8GB RAM, 256GB - 1500 EURO - Geekbench score about 12,000 MacBook Pro i5-8259U, 8GB RAM, 256GB - i.e. version with 4 TB3 ports - 2000 EURO - Geekbench score about 16,000 So, if you want to continue, please provide some real numbers / evidence because your performance claims and prices are wrong.
If I get both of these machines, the MacBook will export 4K video edits in quarter of the time compared to the Matebook. Which one is better value then? (FYI: The 13" haven't had problems with the throttling and it was just a software glitch which is already resolved on the 15".)
ABaumstumpf If you can be bothered, take a look at my 2012 Mac mini review. Shows how fast Macs can be at exporting thanks to optimization. That tiny old Mac easily beats my custom PC with a Core i7 + GTX1080.
ABaumstumpf Again, go to my Channel and you would realize I am not an Apple fanboy at all. Have a custom Windows PC, Mac mini, Surface Pro 4, OnePlus 6. Openly critising every company. Video editing is still just one of those things Apple does really well, like it or not.
i know the point you are trying to make, BUT when combined with the fact that the Matebook looks alot like the Macbook, than the name scheme does imply it based off the mac's name I don't even like Macs. But Macbook is a play on notebook using the name for their desktop pc's. Pluse, "mate" book? that's essentially calling it a friendbook. or even dumber your spousebook. and that's not their company name or the name of product lines prior (is it, I could be wrong, do they generally have mate products). if they called it a Huaweibook than I'd see no issue with that. when reviews for the product are essentially titled "Huawei MateBook X Pro is a MacBook Pro copy that's better than the original" and the first paragraphic is "Huawei has finally done it. With the MateBook X Pro, the company has created a laptop that's a shameless copy of Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pro, but that's easy to forgive because it's just so damn good. It's better than the original in numerous ways, and lags behind only when it comes to certain details. " you know damn well what was Huawei was doing. Any company other than Chinese company would never get away with that
If he likes it, that’s great. But I’d rather have the 2018 13” MacBook Pro with the 8th gen 4C/8T CPUs. macOS is a better OS than Windows 10 and that is easily worth the price premium.....well that and all the aspects of the Mac that it does better than this other machine. For those wanting specifics, think of the “Cadillac features” if you will; The better speakers, the software integration with other Apple products, the premium software with a no BS pricing model, the nicer trackpad, being able to be asked if you want to consent to an OS update. Those are just a few examples. Being able to run multiple OS environments on the same machine is also incredibly useful and convenient.
I do wish I could afford to buy the newest quad core 13 inch. I really need the extra cores but right now I can only afford an older model retina 15, and I'm not a fan of the size.
DrMacintosh Lmao, if you like MacOS so much, then why not get a Windows laptop and install it on there? That way, you'll have your favorite shitty OS but actually have a good laptop, unlike the Mac.
Valkxz Because not all laptops are Hackintosh compatible and it’s much more unstable and unreliable than a genuine MacOS on a MacBook. Also, please explain to me how the 2018 13’ MacBook Pro is a “shitty laptop”. Note: saying “No discrete GPU11!1!11!!” can’t be your only argument
Alex R. Well, you mentioned that we're dealing with no GPU. Let's start with the RAM. It's 200 dollars to upgrade from 8gb to 16gb LPDDR3 RAM (lmao). The CPU is terrible for the price. Really? A 256gb SSD in an $1,800 laptop? Upgrades are ridiculously expensive. Oh yeah, a shitty keyboard. Did I mention thermal throttling? Yeah, they didn't fix it completely. I think I'm done. Wait! I forgot about the shitty build quality!
You made a mistake. You don’t get Mac for specs you get it for everything else: macOS (windows sucks), build quality (no laptop come to MacBook level build quality), the great ecosystem of products, battery life and a lot more.
DragonTechRoyale4k battery life can be equal in some other laptop, no need for a MacBook. If you like the build quality of the breaking keyboard with only dust, and overheating components, don't worry when you break your MacBook and you cant save your data in the Apple store you might turn to windows as well.
What you said is not fully true and only works for people who are already deep in to Apple ecosystem. Stop being a fanboy, other products are good as well.
But you are using windows which has very likely backdoors and network cards with chips developed in china which easily could spy your network traffic...If they want to spy you they will..
Awesome video. I just found your channel and am a huge fan. I have been looking for laptops for months and you just sold me on this one. It would be really cool if you could test it with a eGPU to show us gamers if its a good fit.
This MateBook X Pro seems really nice, but what you don’t talk about si that one gets Windows (or Linux with a bit more complicated compatibility), and the other one macOS. If you need specific apps and like one more than the other (macOS ergonomics, design…), this will make the choice easier.
i’m heavily biased towards macOS, but this is a great notebook. Also nice that they actually put a USB-A port, something that Apple apparently thinks is becoming obsolete. Great review as always Greg!
btw guys you can get rid off fans turning on by re partitioning ssd drive. Huawei made them too small for windows 10. Once done fans don't turn on as often.
