I Ditched my Macbook Pro for an iPad Pro: My Honest Thoughts 

My Wife & I are moving to SE Asia where she’s from and we sold everything and bought this exact setup. Couldn’t be more happier with the simplicity and power it has. This of course is all based on each user and the software they require. I feel future proof for the time being and despite the crazy cost (bough LTE model) I feel like it’s the right move! I bought the 12,9 one with the Pencil and Keyboard, it replaced my notebook. I use it for work and school, and I absolutely love it.

To anyone just using it as a student, with just a pencil, the battery lasted around 11h for me from 100-10%

Great review. I’m all in on the iPad as the device is such a pleasure to use. Currently I use the 11” with the magic keyboard that comes with the desktops as I wasn’t sure I’d like the smaller magic keyboard that was made for the 11”. Very interested to hear your take on that keyboard. Also, in your review can you discuss what the experience is when typing on your lap. The 12.9” version is very top heavy and you have to constantly grab the keyboard to keep it in place. I assume the weight distribution with the 11” will be better as the keyboards are apparently similar in weight (b/w the 12.9” and 11”) but the 11” ipad of course weighs less than the 12.9”. I’m a non creative who has been using the iPad Pro as my primary machine for the last few years. For me the two biggest negatives have continued to get better: First, MS Excel is more difficult to use on the ipad but it is much better now with mouse support and apparently MS is working on a new update for iPad. I don’t run macros but those who do have said that Excel on ipad doesn’t work for them. Second, the file management system. It used to be terrible but is now decent. Plus, now that I save most things in the cloud it really isn’t an issue, except for the fact that some items don’t show up as instantly saved in Google Drive. Keep up the great reviews! They’re enjoyable and trustworthy.

I love mine. one thing ive notice no one really brings up with making this switch is the heat. You can do so much and push this ipad and it will not get hot and burn the crap outa your lap!!

Great video! I actually have been using an iPad Pro as my main computer for awhile now. I have the 2018 model. I was using the Logitech keyboard case with the Magic Trackpad but yesterday decided to get the magic keyboard. So far so good. I use it mainly for managing family photos and videos, media entertainment, and browsing the internet.

I tested last night rendering a 35 seconds 4K 60fps HDR video captured from my 12 Pro and these are the results. 4th Gen IPad Pro: 18 seconds iPhone 12 Pro: 29 seconds iPhone 11: 31 seconds 2015 Base MBP: 85 seconds

Similar to you I bought a iPad Pro 12 to use as primary device and have a few similar issues that you had but also quite a few more. My wish list: Hardware: 1. Two USB4 USBC ports 2. I would prefer front cameras at the top while in landscape 3. Magic keyboard with function row 4. Bigger battery Software: 1. Multi User support like Android has had for ages 2. External screen output at native external screen resolution and not just screen mirror but second screen 3. Keep working on improving file manager at least offering ability to format external storage with different filesystems and better file copy status indicator especially over network 4. Consolidate all settings for keyboard, mouse, pen in one settings menu option 5. App tray like iOS just got and ability to place widgets anywhere allowing me to have a clean clutter free desktop 6. Keep working with Microsoft and Google to beef up all productivity apps like Office, Docs and Chrome to be same as as desktop apps 7. 4k video in RU-vid finally arrived in iPadOS 14 but keeping it here until its final 8. Support more filesystems for external storage even if we have to purchase plugins for the support

Apple should definitely make an iPad Bro, along with a MacBook Dude.

Definitely the best iPad as only device video. It’s my experience too that it’s more than a tablet but not a replacement yet. I mostly use my iPad Pro 11” for research and work and it’s awesome but keep returning to a desktop for actual production because the iPad falls short.

I did also for a few months. My MacBook Pro 2020 is so boring and I was in love with my pro 12.9 and magic keyboard. It started to hurt my fingers and wrist with use after time. I think it was using the small trackpad and the screen simultaneously. Having the weight on the bottom with the Mac also is optimal. The iPad is still desirable to me but only as a second tech device.

Exactly. The best setup is a laptop, tablet, and phone. Tablets aren't ready to replace laptops at this point.

I replaced my Mac Pro about 3 years ago with the iPad Pro, and for the most part haven't missed a beat. Granted, a few occasions I couldn't use my iPad Pro and neeed my work computer. With the USB-C, I buckled and ordered the 2020 last week (delivery this week). I'm thinking it will fill a lot of holes for me noted in my 2017 iPad Pro. My dependence on writing notes, notation, signing docs, and potability outweighed any drawbacks of not using a laptop. The 2020 can only improve on that.

When the ARM macbooks comes out, will u still use the ipad pro or back to macbooks instead? I’m waiting for the ARM macbooks but then this video got me rethinking 🤔 i prolly gonna use them for programming and video editing most of the time. What do you think?

As a creative and a owner of iPad 8, iPad Pro 11, iPad Air, and MacBook Pro 15. The iPad is still a great computer and a budget device for kids and students but a editor and photographer it’s too clunky to be my professional editing device but as a entertainment device it’s amazing.

I am a student with a 2020 iPad Air. I would absolutely love to use this thing instead of having to get myself a new laptop but my uni uses this certain “respondus lockdown browser” during quizzes and stuff to prevent you from tabbing out of the test and cheating and I am not sure if that same program is available or even compatible on the iPad. If I can avoid having to sell out money for a laptop then I will gladly be happy to just use my ipad

It’s my anecdote that it’s better to buy a wifi version of an iPad & create a hotspot for it, when on the go than to buy a LTE. Version, considering the accent of price from only wifi to LTE is significant.

Things that would make the switch a little better ... move the camera to center top when in landscape mode, second, add a second USB-c to bottom corner for landscape mode. ( I guess leave the first in same position for those that want iPad only usage ).

Raspberry Pi 4 is one of the best accessories you can buy for the iPad Pro. Another great feature is the USB-C port on the iPad Pro can power the the Raspberry Pi 4.

Once they figure out how to port over the Mac OS X Finder file handling onto the iPad OS I’ll more than likely switch over. Specially when photoshop, Lightroom and all are now being built over for an iPad also.

I've tried replacing my HP Spectre X360 with my iPad Air 2020 during my school work and for the most part, it is able to do everything I need it to do. But my issues lie with multi-tasking, with my laptop, I can fly around the UI while having lots of tabs open, true multi-tasking with up to 4 apps open simultaneously as well as using an external monitor if needs be. When I try to do any form of multi-tasking on the iPad, there are constant app reloads and many apps simply don't work well when trying to multitask. As a standalone device, it's great. I use the pencil all the time for my biology notes and the magic keyboard when I need to type a lot for geography. It always connects to my hotspot no issue, and being able to airdrop photos between my iPhone and iPad is super convenient. But when you require a lot of power and a proper desktop browser (adblock + Grammarly for me), you simply cannot beat a laptop.

It is not always the ram which is why it closes apps you haven’t used in a while, it is also battery

I replaced my 2015 macbook pro for a 2018 ipad pro back at the start of the year and has been my primary computing device since. It was a harsh start because only weeks after the 2020 model was announced which even though it wasn’t that much of a jump it was still a bummer and after already buying a smartkeyboard folio and a magic trackpad 2 as input devices, ended up buying the magic keyboard eventually. Cost aside and coming from 10+ years of OSX, it was a steep learning curve, and not on the hardware side, because ipad os is really intuitive at times, and while the app store is PACKED with options, most of my workflow apps weren’t available, didn’t work like their desktop counterparts or were/are severely gimped in comparison. Photoshop is unusable and even basic stuff like pages or numbers are severely starved from basic features available on the desktop versions. multitasking while not perfect is usable and web apps mostly work for productivity and shit, even if google refuses to optimize their suite for keyboard and trackpad input, but I’ve come to terms with all of these things and nowadays I only ever sit into my mac mini for either long periods of work for ergonomics or to use those 2 pieces of software i use for engineering work that have no counterparts in ipad os, but even that can be done through even the most basic remote desktop implementation on the go. i started this mostly as an experiment and to try and do more creative work on what i thought would be a better platform and while it has worked for me so far, it’s not something that i can honestly recommend to anyone. the experience could be literally perfect, the hardware is no longer a bottleneck at all but until apple stops sandbagging ipad os it just won’t ever be a good enough, cheap enough or intuitive enough replacement for most people. if one day we get a apple silicon based mac os distro for ipad pro, something content aware that only switched on getting docked, then the story would be different but right now? it’s nowhere good enough...

One thing I don't like about ipad os: you can't resize app windows, like you can with programs on computers. It just feels like you are using a phone. Split screen is not a real solution.

I really with Apple would fix the external display aspect ration, as well as allowing the iPad to drive a monitor while closed. I'm using a 12" 2015 MacBook with an external monitor. A bit slow, but the full screen, and closed laptop mode is the way to go with an external monitor!

What about taking notes on apps like obsidian and notion with a keyboard?

I thinking of using an iPad Pro as a replacement to my laptop I have now (which needs replacing regardless). I would use it for school which will mostly be writing documents, research, mind maps with the Apple Pencil etc. I’m not sure if it is worth it or if I should just get a mac??

Hey man here's the major question I have: Im a huge technophile like you and currently have the M1 MacBook pro... I desperately need an iPad for work, however. Quick therapy stuff. Now I just bought the 2021 iPad pro with 16gb because I want to "future proof" it like I did with my pc desktop... The issue is... It's expensive. I'm wanting to get into some video rendering and photo stuff, and I've always been an advocate for a just a little bit more Ram, but is this overkill for me? Considering the fact that WWDC was a let down with no synonymous major apple apps for both devices. If the 16 GB is worth it then I'll keep it, but truthfully could I get by with 8GB for video and photo rendering? Desperately need your help on this! I could save me $450. It would also be fantastic video content! I trust your advice.

I didn’t replace my pc with my iPad I just use it alongside it. I also am only using the touch screen and I’m not using magic keyboard. Also for some reason I’m on an iPad mini 2 on version 12.5.3 yet I’m still able to use all the gestures and multitask. I’m not sure why this works but I’m not complaining.

I use my iPad Pro for the Apple Pencil as I draw with it quite excessively. Mac Pro has no Apple Pencil support. I'm looking to upgrade from my "classic" iPad Pro and the nearest competitors are all Windows 10 based: Surfacebook, Samsung Galaxy Tab, etc. I'm not even considering any Mac laptops.

I think you forgot some important points. I switch from my windows 10 laptop to the 12“ iPad Pro and there is almost everywhere a lack: 1. A lot of the apps like google drive are missing features. Like to share somethink with someone just with a link. Yes it works, but you can‘t decide in the app, that everyone who has the link can access the files 2. Safari and even chrome for iPad OS aren‘t like on windows. That‘s why you can‘t use some website like you would on windows. Example? Sure: Try to edit something in webflow and scroll trough the menu in webflow, no chance 3. Often the mouse support is not working, even in safari. So I can‘t just to a right click and open a link in a new tab. On some websites it work but on some not. Or you can‘t just hit the third mouse key to do this for you 4. And yeah, the monitor support or the not monitor support is aweful 5. You would like to see the source code of a website or just what heading the website uses? Not with chrome or safari ... You need an extra app for that There are a lot of great things on the iPad Pro but sometimes you could get crazy because the most simple things are not working

Well done, this is a very genuine and accurate portrayal of the move from MacOS to iPadOS (or notebook to tablet). I’m a 25 year mac user, run a video production company and have just done something similar. I still have an iMac Pro for my main editing machine and central computer but recently sold my solid, top end 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro and 1st Gen iPad Pro for the 2020 12.9-inch + Magic KB for iPad and its pretty amazing how good this has been. It’s not without teething problems but I’ll say I’m 90% happy. IPadOS 14 will solve a lot of those niggles and the remainder will hopefully come soon enough with further software updates (example, go and do some line spacing on a pages doc on MacOS and then view the same document in iOS, just silly). The Magic Keyboard is pretty amazing, I do wish it had an escape key and the OS does need to be refined for it but after a day of using it the entire iPad experience is completely different (for the better), and damn I want hot corners in iPadOS! Anyway well done for this video, you’ve got a new subscriber. Keep up the good work.

I am a law graduate who wants to ditch a non Touch Bar MBP because it's loud and hot. I went through most of college with an iPad Air 2 and a clamshell keyboard case off amazon. I learned to get around the limitations. My biggest worry is surfing the web. It was a pain in the ass back in the day but I got used to it. I was also kinda limited by text edition apps. Pages is brilliant but sometimes it's not enough for the text edition I need to do, there's features that are only available in Mac/windows versions of Word. Now, I am certain that iPad Pro in 2021 is probably light years ahead of my experience with the iPad Air 2 lol, so I am again considering this over the MacBook Air with the M1 chip. I don't know what to do. I know my needs are not as technical as those of someone who does engineering or stuff like that, but still. If there's anyone who uses their iPad Pro in a similar fashion, I'd love to know your input!
