laziness doesn’t exist. The 40 hour work week isn’t even supposed to be normal. Wanting to rest our bodies and find fulfilment in relaxing shouldn’t be considered “laziness”

@mizzmolly when you turn a hobby into a business, you no longer get to just enjoy the hobby for the sake of it. You have to deal with the business side...sales, marketing, accounting, taxes, customer service,, producing your product or services on a set schedule etc etc. Sometimes you end up spending just as much or more time on those things as on...baking, crafting, or whatever the hobby was to begin with. Its not fun for everyone to deal with business side and it can actually ruin the thing they once did for fun and relaxation.

I understand this but also a lot of these gurus have adhd. I also have it pretty badly. I hyperfocus and forget to eat all the time. When they hyperfocus on an interest they are forgetful and get blasts of dopamine that the adhd mind needs in order to complete tasks. I think this is an important part of the conversation. I don’t think y’all understand hustling that much. Hustling is about setting a goal for yourself and working to achieve that goal. If someone is just working for the sake of working without getting anything out of it that’s stupid I will agree. However if someone has a goal in mind then they will have to work for it. You can’t dream big and expect it to fall in your lap on a silver platter. You have to work for that and that work will be difficult but you need to keep pushing in order to ACHIEVE. I will agree that if you are happy with a simple life and a regular 9-5 then you good you don’t need to hustle if you are happy with where you are. You only need to hustle if your goal is to achieve something.

I hustled hard in my early 20s. One day, I started feeling ill. I was weak, nauseous, and hardly could eat anything. I saw a couple doctors and none of them could figure out what was wrong with me. I decided to take that summer off to rest. Almost instantly, I started feeling better. All the symptoms went away. That following fall when school and work started back up, the symptoms returned. I realized then that it was my body's response to prolonged stress. I truly believe all that stress did permanent damage to my body. I no longer wish to hustle, to stress, to stay busy 24/7. This isn't the way humans were meant to live. We are meant to experience stress in short bursts. Sadly, if you're not hustling in America, you're a loser. It's a way of trying to impress upon people that you have it all, when it all has you. It's sick. And no you're not lazy for wanting a regular job with regular hours. You do not need the excessively big house, cars, clothes or anything that those who promote hustle culture tell you that you do. Money really and truly doesn't buy happiness. Im grateful and I don’t care for a second stream of income because I was always stressing trying to get multiple jobs. I get paid more at this position than all other jobs I’ve held. I was talking to a resident of mine and she was telling me how back in the 70s and 80s, her and her husband, made enough to buy their own home, have 2 cars and go on vacation, every now and then, while raising 3 kids. Her husband was a car mechanic and she was a nurse. She then told me that she felt bad for this generation because she sees how hard many people work, and they still can't have half of what her and her husband had at 25. It bothered me because it was all true. Honestly, I feel like hustle culture, is really there to show off to other people, what you've accomplished and if they want to be successful, then they need to make the same move. It's emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually damaging and it gets old quickly.

It became glorified when society became focused on making money instead of making community or being good people to make community. I’d say people has gotten so sick of people and the politics of said relationships that they escape them by going to work and working more. Which makes sense since I’m work people can harm you less though many find loopholes to hinder your progress. The other thing is that the cost of living for the average folks has risen exponentially and any newcomers must find a way to earn income to be able to afford homes in certain places due to the fact that those that have generational wealth will only end up getting more and more. So you work your ass off to try to afford the basics to mask the fact that the wealthier and more privileged citizens of the USA keep rising in number or wealth, rising up the prices of everything in the process. A lot of people here have too much and the majority doesn’t have much. But we have to pay for our basics like the person that has too much for some reason.

I don’t think working hard is bad or trying hard at something. I think a big problem with hustle culture is that it is more than working hard. It’s about trying to maintain the image of being a hard worker. Social media also puts pressure on us to convey a certain image. I’m in a minimum wage job. I don’t mind it too much since I still live with my mum but one of my cousins was saying how I should be aiming higher. My job is minimum wage however I don’t mind too much as other things are a big priority for me in which I try hard at. For example, my health is a priority that I have been maintaining a low carb diet for about a year. I don’t show this off to everyone but this isn’t seen as much as me putting in hard work as if I was to be grinding at a job or going back to uni. I think the problem with hustle culture is that a lot of it is image.

Hey girl! Love the video and I agree, but I wish there was some more nuance in the description of hustling/ working for material things. Because of the capitalistic society that we live in, most people are working so hard just to LIVE- to not be homeless, hungry. We are actually forced to work this hard. Working 40 hrs a week is too much, yet you can't get basic benefits (in the USA) without working this much. Hustle culture is just a new way we are baited into sacrificing what makes us happy and brings us together in order to advance corporate gains.

It’s okay to want a simple life and it’s also okay to be driven and want more. Shaming either side is pointless. The world needs entrepreneurs and leaders to drive innovation/society and the world also needs those that want to live a simple life and work a basic 9-5. Not everyone should be an entrepreneur or hustler, otherwise those entrepreneurs wouldn’t have workers in the first place.

It's great you are discussing this cos for me being a working mum I feel guilty that I'm not chasing positions (while my peers are moving up), im just working towards being excellent in my current position, being an excellent mum to my toddlers and being an excellent wife and somehow getting a balance. Especially cos God has blessed me financially so I don't want to be ungrateful.

Very good point you made about rebranding boomer struggles. Alot of us do approach work with fear and anxiety which sucks away any sort of passion we may have originally had. Overworking is often a trauma response (I have recently learned in therapy) A lot of us overwork because we are scared of rejection or failure or we feel we need to prove ourselves by proving those that doubted us wrong - but actually how we best do that is living a fulfilled, content and happy life full of rest. Even if we do want to work towards material success, we should not neglect ourselves along the way because you need your whole healthy self to truly enjoy any wealth.

This culture of hustle hard and overachieving can only lead to burn out, health issues and depression. It is time to rethink the standards by which we are being judged!

Here's some Boomer wisdom: Quality wins over Quanity every time. The amount of money you make is important, but what you do with that money is vital over all. If you're burned out, you won't manage your money right, you won't manage your social interactions right, you manage yourself right. Netflix & chill.

Contentment is important but capitalism and inflation is real. You need less than you think you do in most cases but people need more financial literacy and money management skills. It's ok to want what you want and work for it while keeping in mind what all the potential outcomes are.

I definitely feel this way, i was making lists and lists to be busy but for what? I was doing 100 things, when the panini began and it just made me tired lol Just productivity for nothing, or going made trying to make side hustles. I was so burnt out I had to channel "I can't come and die" because hustle culture is def a disease. Def can relate to having to be productive from fear of not appearing productive enough or being reprimanded.

Yessss, listening to the body and self awareness. Thank you for this video. 💕 It only took me about 3-4yrs to burnout on hustle culture. A major difference between Boomers and Millennials & Gen Z is we’re course correcting 5-10yrs into this, where they never course corrected. Another reason we started with hustle culture is bc we had to, especially millennials. We didn’t inherit the same economy Boomers did. This effects things massively and we essentially started thinking out of the box to pay the bills and keep up, which meant some serious side hustling. Also in general Boomer’s don’t acknowledge facts (not all obviously, some are cool) and how things have changed so when they saw us not buying houses and not popping out babies on their same timeline they called us lazy, entitled perpetual children. ....when the truth is it’s simply not financially responsible to do either at this time. ....My personal take on this is they woke up one day and realized they’d never made a conscious choice in their life, they just followed the prescribed timeline and boxes they’re “supposed” to check. So when we weren’t doing it they were like “hey I didn’t know that was a option” and became bitter little jelly bells. When the truth is our generations were just forced to start making personal and conscious choices bc the old choices weren’t available anymore. And from that hustle culture was born, something we should consciously disengaged with. We’ve tried it. It felt necessary at some point. But it’s hurting us, so let’s change. Basically - It’d be helpful to question everything Boomers said and put on us, and examine what made us start acting the way we did. And then course correct. We are more conscious generations, we’ll get this soon enough.

As you describe hustle culture it reminds me of the American dream! how they say if you work hard you can achieve great success and we all know in America that is not even close to true. Yes hard work for anything in life is very needed but the endless constant work and grind hustle culture promotes is horrible. We weren’t put on this earth to work ourselves endlessly to death, we should ENJOY life. Yes work but take breaks, find things that you enjoy that bring you to life, spend time with loved ones. I hate this idea of hustle culture it’s so toxic and dangerous as well. It also makes people in their 20’s feel like they are behind in life little do they realize life just started for them.

This remind me so, so much of back when I used to work at concerts during the summers (in security, and that's a whole 'nother can of beans) and how the hierarchical system there and the hustle culture/mentality of esp big productions just made those places such incredibly toxic places to work. I remember working 15h shifts 4 days straight and not even feeling human anymore at one festival and I mentioned how utterly exhausted I was to a coworker as I was heading back to our sleeping quarters after day 3 and they responded "oh I was scheduled for 16h shifts only [of course you were], but someone got sick, so I had to jump in and take the rest of their shift last minute. I've been working 17h and have 4 left to go today!" in the most sickeningly cheerful and self-righteous tone, a tone that was just rampant in the industry. And I think that could have been a point where I could have been further brainwashed into thinking that what was going on was ok, but I don't know if it was the fact that I was so exhausted or that I just wasn't down deep enough yet but that conversation just never sat right with me. Like, how could I possibly have worked harder after standing up for +15h for three days straight, barely having any time to even shower inbetween my shifts, much less eat breakfast and even then not getting enough sleep? Would love to say I never went back but I came for YEARS afterwards. Don't think I will ever be able to enjoy a big production concert.

Since I was 18 I been working. I had two jobs for 3 years while going to school- thinking that hustle was what I needed to do. Now my kids are 8 years and 6 and I stare at them and I think. Wow they are growing so fast. And just this year I realize that I all I want to do is be with my kids more. So I’m in the process of working smarter not harder.

Hustle is great. When what you're hustling for is something you're passionate about and you're not just working hard while not knowing exactly what it is you're even working hard for. Working hard often doesn't pay off. If you're working a job you hate and thinking that if you just work harder and make more money you'll be happy, you're chasing a lie. Happiness doesn't come from a particular dollar amount but rather, loving what it is you do to make that money.

I appreciate y’all he amount of work and thought that you put into these videos Adella! There is quite a bit to digest here haha The LinkedIn post and statistics were particularly unsettling. I also appreciated your conclusion! I love how you stated that at the end of the day we do have a choice. At least more than we think we do in a lot of cases. Its a reminder for me to question my motivations as I am look forward to really entering the workforce (currently still a student lol) Self-awareness is so important Lastly Lool I love how frank you were about passion and work. I definitely agree that it can creat a whole other pressure and just isn’t always necessary! Thank you for sharing your thoughts😄 Wpuld love for to make a video about the whole ‘Girl Boss’ narrative too Have a great week Adella!

Hustle & bustle culture is toxic. There are other forms of hustling (some which I would not ever do!). I used to work sometimes 90hrs/week in the midlands. I moved to London for a lower hour job and enjoy my freetime investing into what I enjoy doing more a better work versus life balance. I thoroughly enjoyed my job at the time, however a change has been placed into my life. It has since opened and closed my eyes to certain things and I am trying to recuperate, and aim in the direction that I have been preparing and working towards for the last 20 or so years. It brings joy into the lives of man woman and child and I shall continue to invest my time into that field/genre until such a time that I am ready to hang up the gloves and retire completely from working/self-employment life. Peace
