"Sterilised" As someone who's done some pretty decent trips in a 70 series and kitted it out quite reasonably, I could never imagine wanting to have induction cooking purely and simply based on the amount of money needed to set it up to run it, it's almost a gimmick in my eyes. The amount of money spent of setting up a 12v system to run it would be 1000s of kms of travel. I think a lot of people see people on social media and they have these insane setups and think they need it, when a few sticks and a zippo will do the job quite fine. Or if it's Harry's sad time and you can't have a fire, a basic BigW propane suitcase cooker. Because let's be real most of us just get drunk and end up burning the sausages anyways

I agree 100%. Its all a big con-job. Reminds me of the days when TV programs & Jamie Durie conned everyone into believing they needed a $50,000 outdoor area to enjoy $10 worth of sausages on the barbeque.

"Sterilised" is a great analogy. My partner and I love camping in our VW Transporter, but most of our camping is beach front caravan parks. For this application we love our twin element induction cooker, we have access to power, and often have to deal with wind. Great episode 👍

"Streilised" is a great way to put it. We far too easily become accessory junkies these days, almost loosing the romance of camping. I know personally we are going away from all the bells & whistles stuff. While we all travel, tour, camp etc differently & have different needs, we have found keeping it simple is so much better, seriously quicker setup/pack up all while carrying much less weight. A great subject. Cheers!

From someone who runs an induction cooktop there’s a lot in this to be agreed with for sure! Well said and it’s definitely not the best option for majority of people still. It’s just talked about so much now because it’s still pretty new in the off grid industry with the way batteries are going. There is nothing better then cooking on a fire though, so I really need to get my act together and buy some things to do so when I can!

Great video on induction cooking. I have 200 watts of lithium batteries and a 3000 watt inverter. Also have 600 watts of solar panels. I use my induction cooker only for breakfast and lunch and only if it’s a sunshine day. Yeah they are great on windy days outside the caravan. My setup probably cost around $4000. Nothing can compare to a campfire meal but for a quick meal off grid induction is my go to. Really enjoying your videos mate.

As someone who camps on a beach for 3-5 nights straight and runs a freezer for bait etc. plus a fridge for food, if it's super hot or cold and cloudy I already can't replenish what gets used even with 220w solar on the roof and I end up idling my car for an hour here or there with a bcdc1240 redarc just to get 40 amps back in. You are 100% right in everything you stated. I am finding I need a 200w solar blanket and my 220w on the roof in normal sunny days just to keep a 47l ARB freezer and 47l Arb fridge running and being able to replace what gets taken out. Let alone cooking...... Webber + jetboil + fire covers all much better and you have a 'backup'. Then there is also the issue that eventually your induction system will break. It's electrical, it will fail at some point. And fixing such a complex system when its dark and your a common man not a sparky... good luck. Fuses will melt from constant 50++ amp loads, I see blade fuses everywhere that melt and are not designed for constant high loads (Use MIDI fuses people). And circuit breakers also have the same issue, poor contact and heat builds up and trips them. Induction Is just a pain in the ass only for a very select and 'wealthy' few. It's a bit of a status symbol like owning a supercar and it's not camping.

Mate you hit the nail on the head. Sterilised is exactly what an induction cooker does to the overall experience of getting out there and experiencing the true outdoors cooking on an open fire and getting back to basics, absolutely love your video and especially how when you make a mistake you just run with it, bit like everyone else's experiences cooking in the bush, have learned a lot from your channel, keep up the good work

My budget set up was $1200 for 200ah slimline lithium battery. $330 for renogy 2k inverter $360 for renogy 50a dcdc Plus ~$200 to wire it up and fuse. And $80 for inverter cooker So still around $2200 do get my foot into the door for 12v to power fridge and induction cooking. Whilst my 12v wasnt planned around induction, it has come in handy on places that cant have fires.

Sterilised Harry thanks for a very informative insight into Induction Cookers. We use all 3 types being gas , fire and induction. I agree that Fire is the best. Nothing beats sitting around a simmering camp oven over a fire or coals, sipping a beer and some country music piping through in the back ground. Keep up the great work mate.

I think the Sterilised description hits the nail on the head. When I head away I prefer back to basics type of cooking, either on the fire or gas and mostly both when cooking for the crew and keep my 12V system pretty basic and reliable. As long as my fridge is kept running and main battery is kept charged, the world will turn!

Would have to agree with most of what you say. We have an induction cooker that was given to us. Probably wouldn’t have bought one, but now that we have it we love it for when at powered locations due to all the reasons you mentioned. I don’t think it has “sterilised” our experience when camping more so sped up the cooking time so we can spend more time chatting and relaxing. Our Cub Weekender runs 200Ah of Lithium and a 1500watt inverter and our cooker goes down as low as 500watts and we’ve never had to run it above 1000watts, so if we “had to” we could use it on the inverter but we don’t as we have the gas for non-powered locations. Now we just need to get that Compact Ozbraai for some F2F action. Love the channel, keep up the great content 👍

Hi, I agree with what you said but did buy a $50 Kmart induction cooker for the Van. It's light and doesn't take up much space. The reasoning is that there is no kitchen inside our new hybrid Van and I thought it would be just for insurance if it is really ugly outside, either weather or bugs and we at least could make some soup or fry some snags and make a coffee in the Van. That would be just to get us over the hump. Otherwise it's all outside baby. I know it is a "Sterilised"solution and I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Anyway it's only $50, Will have 300 Lithium, 450 solar and a 2000w inverter.

I use my 79 series for work, 1000kms a week, full time camping. My car is my home.. I’m about to drop 15k+ on a Safirey lithium setup, and to me that’s a lot of money. I’ll still use fire when I can see it will be good for the social aspect but I want my Ute to be as functional as can be as it’s my home so I’m willing to go for the induction. There’s usually not much time left in the day once I’m finished work and when I want to cook I want to plug it in and go for it. Good points though Harry!

Very accurate and realistic assessment. I am the nomad category you spoke of and love my induction both out of the car and the caravan. The power is already there and it's easier. Low on power? Then we just use the gas. However, I have never woken up and thought, boy I am looking forward to a great induction dinner tonight. There is something about veggies from a fire that makes them a special experience. Yes, induction can be a bit "sterilised".

Really handy when there's a fire ban though or conditions are too dangerous for a flame. Our gas bottle was still about 25% full but wouldn't deliver any gas on the weekend because it got too cold overnight. So Gas isn't without flaws either and sometimes a fire isn't practical at all. Your points are all valid, just thought I'd chuck my 2c in as well.

"Sterilised" Just back from a week off grid camping in a small SUV + box trailer for all the gear. We use a 9kg gas cylinder + a 2 burner stove and the park we stayed at had fire rings (truck rim). If we stayed at a powered site I could use an induction cooker, but for the cost of the cooker I could fill the cylinder twice - that's about 2 years use for us !

Agree with your take. For a home it's great. But my issue is in the bush the outlay cost to get it up and running is very high. I also find the smell of a fire tends to change the taste of the food for the better. For breakfast a gas cooker is quick and easy. Furthermore where I go around(Southern Africa) if something breaks it just will not be fixable and you will need to get a cooker anyway. Maybe in the future I will get a single portable unit to throw in the panier with a pan and a pot(but that is more weight so maybe not) for if I camp up at a powered site. But for now I will make a fire or use a gas cooker. "Sterilised" Regards from Cape Town

I have dual hob induction 2k inverter in my Y62 & it is 100% lithium supported being both starter battery & rear setup. We can cook on both plates & also use air fryer for deserts & recharge used power within 30-40min of driving or a bit over an hour at idle. I use direct charge via Argofet from 210amp watercooled alternator. Now in saying that we have fire every night (where possible) & usually alternate cooking on each. Biggest issue is a lot of places no longer allow open fires & induction is far superior in every way if you only have 2 options of gas or electric. Bonus of my setup is I don’t really need solar either due to how quick I can charge as it is not restricted by a bcdc charger. I do however have a solar blanket to negate having to drive or start up the vehicle if needed. So even though you make some valid points I tend to disagree more than agree as it depends on how you have setup your system. Not all lithiums are the same 😉

You’re on point about induction cooking and the only environment I want completely "Sterilised" is the operating table. That said I do like induction for controlled cooking i.e making sauces, but personally I don’t go camping to cook paste or in any rush to knock up a quick bacon and eggs breakkie. I enjoy cooking meat, and nothing beats cooking on fire. My whole family enjoys the experience of cooking on fire, I cannot say the same about cooking with induction or even cooking on gas.

The best part of camping is the fun of sitting around, chatting and not doing a whole lot. Aside from maybe a roadside lunch, I’ve never fully understood the obsession with making dinner/boiling water as fast as humanly possible while camping. I like cooking in a camp oven and over the fire but when you wake up in the morning hungover and just want some bacon and eggs ASAP or when you get into camp late and just want a steak before collapsing into bed they are GOLD. Was recently on a trip where it was blowing a gale, couldn't get any reprieve from the wind and it saved the day, however later in the trip we cooked almost exclusively over the fire. They definitely have their place if your pockets are deep enough and you get out enough to justify it.

This is a great video. In the first few minutes I started pondering the idea of induction cookers and even googled them. By the end I was sterilised to the idea and brought back to the idea of being present in the moment amongst family and friends cooking a nice humble meal. Instead of wasting money on an unnecessary cooking process one could spend more money on a higher quality knife and chopping board or set themselves up so they have a nice space to cook so that they want to. Rather than using it as an appliance or a chore. As a weekend warrior I don’t have the funds for a huge lithium solar array or the necessities to use it. Good video Harry.

Sterilised Hi, using a induction cook top out bush is relatively new concept in camping and will have problems as this new tech goes bush. Power being top on the list. To me it is an easy way to get fresh food cooked quick. Not to many people sit around a gas cooker for ambience, usually some one start afire to sit around. When you have had a big day and need a quicker meal their good. Different food to the barbecue fare can be done with them for options, all for options. A tip if your using them the bbq sheets ,you buy and use on public electric bbqs ,can be put between the induction cook top and you pan/pots to protect the induction cook top. This can be done on the ones in your house to protect them as well. Have also used a camp oven on the induction for roasting food. You can’t beat a fire out bush but as this new tech comes on line so will it functionality. Save me turning up the wireless to drown out the sound of the induction. All the best ,from Nth Qld

‘Sterilized’ may be a bit harsh a description. I think we all shift towards comfort and convenience in some phase of our lives, especially when getting older. Yet, I think you’ve analyzed the subject as objectively and fairly as possible. Thanks for that. I would like to add another con to induction cooking. I don’t like the idea of entirely depending on electricity and therefore think that cooking on gas allows me for redundancy in case of a catastrophic failure in the electrical system. That’s my one cent of input to the discussion. Keep up the good work!

thanks for posting, good information. though thinking of using a portable induction cooker only for camping is a Sterilised view of them. We move ours from campervan/caravan to home kitchen. When you want to cook outside at home but not in the kitchen ( eg: smoke, splatter and fumes etc) induction cookers are SO easy to carry outside. Did you consider mentioning how they 'might' be 'safer' ? eg: they don't get as hot to touch and no flame.( how do you legally carry gas in a vehicle?) If your thinking of buying one , make sure the whole of the top surface is 'glass' as the heat of the pan can melt plastic. ask us how we know 😂 Also they don't heat water any 'better' than element type kettles etc. (eg: energy required)

Think induction is a great secondary cooking option. Great when touring to boil a jug or a quick lunch. Also great in really adverse conditions and in need can use inside even just to cook noodles if being outside is not an option. I only run a 1000 w inverter in the 4wd and this sufficent as a back up options or even to cook Bacon and eggs on the beach on a windy day.

A big electrical set up can be great. I ran a camper van with 380ah AGM batteries, 3000w inverter and 800w solar. It was the coffee machine rather than the electric cook top that made the difference though.

STERILISED …. Thanks Harry, we are looking at buying a induction cooker, you covered a lot & few things we had not thought of. Living in the Pilbara, we mostly camp where we can cook on a fire but will be buying a caravan soon to travel Oz so need other cooking options. Cheers 👍

I think that you have used induction cooker to describe an entire mentality about the outdoors really and "sterilized" (Seppo spelling) is a very good word for it. The social aspect of the fire cannot be overestimated and cooking over the fire is a skill and an art but there are times where the gas comes out. As I get older I may be softening a bit but I have always looked a bit sideways at the big camper/rv travel as a sterile environment and have never come to terms with why one would spend the money on one of those instead of staying at really great resorts all around the world. No need to drive 1,000 miles just to pop into the RV and whip up dinner in the oven-you can do that at home. And for the cost of electrical system you could sure buy a lot of fuel. Maybe I am just old and stubborn but going on these trips should have some element of challenge and yes, discomfort from time to time to really experience what it is all about. Anyway-very nicely done and no offense to the "sterilised" crowd-to each their own.

Some context, I spent 8 years cooking by fire every night following Jack Absolum's Camp Oven cook book, as my only guide, living in Cape York by a fire and sleeping under the stars every night. Back in the early 80s, Solar and lead acid were rubbish, lucky to keep a 40ltr engel running without driving! So, looking for the easier life .. changed to gas 2 burner and fire mix for the about next 10 years and then... Spotted a shiny new thing .. late 90s and thought this is it.. the Holy Grail an induction cooker for about $180 and we had a 3kv diesel gen set for the power tools .. I was getting tired of cooking the long way, after the hard days work and the camp oven was heavy and dirty so this shiny almost "Sterilized' device was coming to camp with me .. I'd show the boys .. cook dinner without raising a sweat, kick back in my camp chair and let the magic happen! All went well until the 2nd week .. when the fuse blew inside the magic box much to the chagrin of the crew! Thankfully I still had matches and the camp oven .. I can't believe the hype over this type of cooking for people who aren't on a time budget .. I for one won't ever fall for the magic of induction ever again🙄

Tried a single induction in a caravan park but prefer to cook on the ozpig if I can as it is much about the doing as it is about the cooking and eating. 100% agree with your assessment

Thanks for the thought provoking info Harry. As an old fella who started bbqing when wood was the only.option we knew about, when gas bbqs arrived we rubbished them due to the less skill required and (most importantly) loss af taste, my thoughts are... Wood or "genuine charcoal" fire are by far the best. Gas and induction are only for convenience, and induction is easily the most convenient and imo safer if you have the capacity to run it.

A good reality check, I am about to fit out a Prado 120 series and was considering all the options including an Induction system. The reality is I will need gas for my hot water system, so a gas cooker makes sense and I would rather cook over a camp fire, nothing beats it when getting back to nature

" Steralised "... I think induction is a great option for people who have a van setup or similar, for the odd time they want to cook indoors, if they already have the electrical infrastructure. I have it in my truck just for really windy days, and for quick meals - not boiling pasta, but perhaps quickly frying a couple of snags or doing a 2min noodle snack. You're right though re being steralised - when I camp, I WANT the fire, the taste of a bit of smoke in my meals, and the ambiance of watching the fire with a nice glowing bed of coals. ps. My GF and I took your recommendation of that folding 3 seater chair - it is great... and space for the dog (not as big as Fred) to cuddle up with us. Also bought the spun steel camp oven you linked in your video - but we're still getting used to that one - burn a bit of stuff or under do it... makes us respect your ability to cook reliably over fire more. Cheers for the great videos :)

“Sterilised” 100% agree on social part, camping for us is 90% about social aspect. But valid point if you are full time overlanding and on the move, you'd want to faff less.

Finally, someone said it out loud..Solving a $50 problem with $5,000.. if only it was 5k, ask most of them(youtubers) and it's 20k +++, and most of the high end is usually paid by sponsors. Love my induction at home but when i'm "out there" nothing beats a fire!.

I've already bought your book from an army disposal store as I got a chance to look inside it so I won't mention the codeword .... there's another chance for someone else to enjoy! I bought an portable induction cooktop to create a small extra kitchen with better outdoor access use just because it was so portable, relatively contained heat-safe, easily cleaned, no need to provide extra fuel other than access to a power point and easily put away ..... that said haven't even used it yet! And yes I think you achieved the lack of bias with a balanced opinion.

“Sterilised” We have always cooked on a fire or gas, but seriously, portable induction has been a revolution for another option if the weather is too bad to cook outside and various places where fire-bans are the norm. Our cookware is also suitable. Just a good fallback option if we need it.

Perfectly summed up and well reasoned discussion about this. It’s easy to have the back and forth “light hearted” banter (still think some get a bit too defensive about their over capitalisation to just cook some snags in the wind) but at the end of the day they have a very specific market. And sterilised perfectly encapsulates the cooking scenario with them

During my visit to the caravan show last weekend in Sydney, I ended up having the same question. Some caravans/camp trailers/RVs have intensive converters and big solar power on top as their selling point, but still sacrificed a lot of space for mounting a traditional LPG stove and the storage space for the gas bottles. I've seen people building their caravans, RVs, and vans in China differently. Some of them completely ditched the LPG system. Instead, using fully electricities, for cooking, lighting, and AC. Some carry a portable fuel generator for emergency charging up in the wild. Buy one or two portable camping stoves that run on cartridge butane as a backup option. Cartridge butanel can easily be found in many local stores. They use cartridge butane fuel a lot because many hotpot restaurants used them. And since they mainly run on an induction stove, that is very less cartridge butane consumed. Don't need to worry about refilling another gas bottle in town or worried about an empty bottle in the bush. Water, gray/black water, and petrol can be charged up and dumped at the same time (i.e. in a gas station and running water toilets), and that is all they have to worry about. Because there is lacking RV parks in China, some genius conversion I saw was adding an EV vehicle charging port for their RVs and Vans, so if they still need some electricity, or when they are staying in town, just find a parking lot with EV charging station and they can plug it in for a simple and quick charge.

Fire is always my preference but in WA that is a problem for so much of the year (and always in national parks). I've used a Coleman hyper thing for the last couple of years and it has been good but I have just moved to total electric (apart from Jetboil for a quick cuppa and as a back up). Induction is brilliant. If you can't light a fire, it's my go to.
