I was a teenager when I first heard this song. This song has a gospel content. I don't know why Jesus love me. He gave Himself for us. Romans 5:8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

I love this song which I learned came out in 1977. I was only 8 years old then. I had just discovered it while searching new songs to listen to and sing as well during karaoke time. I love the melody and I am comfortable singing it.
