I Don't Like You -- MTV (Grace Vanderwaal) reaction

In a cozy MTV gathering on Nov 10, 2019, Grace and her band give an energetic, rousing and nuance-difference version of one of her most popular songs from Letters Vol. 1. I didn't personally see any hints in Grace's delivery of the chanteuse phase should start going through in March 2020, but what joy to watch -- as well as the Q&A directly afterward with her young audience.

Well of course we want to hear you praise Grace Dax. I think it’s what we live for. Grace’s genre style is evolving by the minute. I’m sure there’s so much going through her mind it’s hard to keep up with herself. Evidently the quarantine gave her a lot of time to experiment and explore her abilities. It’s gonna be awesome what she has to feed us. I can’t wait.

I think I remember that she was surprised that the audience was so close so she probably closed her eyes so that she could remover herself back into her own mind.

☑️ Grace as a human being appeals to those who eschew the material and hubristic trappings of this world. The pandemic has stripped away much of these trappings and has forced people to confront their naked selves. We are seeing Grace untethered from the influences of the music industry and it is allowing her to pursue her own vision of what her music can be, and so far it is a glorious vision. This is one of the few good things that this pandemic has produced. We would do well to follow Grace’s lead and pursue our own vision for our lives.

"A glorious vision" indeed! What a positive comment in these dark times! Thank you! Grace has always been introspective, but I think you are correct, time away from the world has caused her creativity to flower!

Hey Dax. Great reaction. As far as Grace's musical transformation goes.....My opinion is that she has always had these intimate musical moments where it's just her and her uke. Then she started teaching herself guitar and introducing that into her repertoire. When she was 12 she did a lot of very sophisticated things vocally, and I assume that she did these things because of an almost supernatural musical instinct. With this instinct as her fallow ground - so to speak - she naturally gravitated to sophisticated music done by other instinctual and learned geniuses. I think she understands these iconic legends from the moment she hears them, and this starts flash bulbs going off in her brain. I knew a guitar player who had the same gift Grace does. If he heard one little snippet of something unique - Wes Montgomery's octave lead playing, for instance - then he would sit down and just rip with that concept. The same when he was 15 years old and heard slide playing for the first time. He didn't know what made that unique sound on the guitar. An older guy showed him the brass tube that he put on his finger. Bob took that slide home with The Allman Brothers Live album, and during one Sunday learned the entire album, including all of Duane Allman's solos. I think that Grace is now hearing chord substitutions and such for the first time, and it's like a baby shark smelling blood for the first time. She instantly knows what it is because her instinctual endorphin alarm bells are ringing off the wall. Just like Bob the guitar player. If he heard something on the radio that rang his musical alarm bells, he was liable to drive right off the road. Grace just understands stuff on an intuitive level. Once a window opens a crack, she just flies through the crevice and gobbles up everything. She really is astounding. You have mentioned many times in your reactions how much you appreciate her dropped words ....or missing words.....or stuffed syllables. Well.....that's one of the lessons that only the most sophisticated musicians learn.; the creating of space to frame a note or phrase. That's what Miles was all about in his most brilliant era. The use of silence to frame sound. The use of one note to frame another....one chord to color the next. Like push/pull of Judo, or sweet/sour of cooking, or irony in literature...... Grace was already doing this at 12 years old. Then she was running. Now she is flying. It sure is fun to be alive to hear this all happening in real time.

Wiley, I think you are exactly right, and I think Grace is exactly like Bob. It’s almost primal, like a cheetah instantaneously responding to its prey’s movements. @@daxmusix Hey Dax, while I was riding my bicycle this morning, I came up with an idea that I wanted to share with you. In order to promote the Grace community that you have built, once a year you could do a special reaction. Instead of reacting to a video about Grace, you could do a "Status Report." There is probably a better name for it than just "Status Report." I kind of like "Comment Hall of Fame" or "Grace Challenge." You could start with background about why you started your channel. You could also mention any important Grace news like when Volume 2 is coming out. Finally, you could acknowledge your most devoted subscribers by selecting your favorite comments, reading aloud each of your favorites, and reacting to each comment. As you know I have taken the "Grace Challenge." I am slowly watching all your Grace videos and reading all the comments. There are some wonderful comments hiding amidst all your reactions. Two of my favorites are this one by Wiley and one by Larry Kulp about what it was like to attend Grace's Las Vegas concert. Let me tell you, those are two terrific comments! Of course, there are lots of other terrific comments as well! By highlighting such wonderful comments, it would allow you to acknowledge your most devoted subscribers. I think you missed Grace's full statement when answering the question about who inspired the lyric "I love you, but I don't like you". She wasn't being disingenuous. She started to take a cop-out and say she didn't know who it was about and you could apply it however you like, but she then went on to say that she's a normal person living through life, and she more than likely sees the people she writes songs about every day or pretty often. She didn't want to disclose who it was about for the sake of the person's privacy, as well as her own.

So excellent reaction as always! -- Six or seven years ago (I am embarrassed to admit), I finally realized that Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits is the finest lead guitar player of all time. (IMO yes, others will disagree, siting Clapton or Hendrix or whoever.) The reason I believe he's the best is because he so amazingly becomes one with the guitar. Grace does him one better though. Grace becomes one with whatever song she is performing, original or cover. One with the song, they are inseparable! In this case, with this song, Grace puts on a clinic on how to do it.

Neil, I read your post first and then I read Lazlo ‘s. When I read your post, I thought, yes Mark Knopfler AND David Gilmour, and then I read Lazlo‘s post. LOL I didn’t make up my mind on Mark Knopfler until a few years ago, allowing him to join the ranks of David Gilmour. I think Jimi Hendrix also brought his soul out in his guitar, but I much prefer the nuance of Knopfler and Gilmore. And yes, Grace does with her voice what those extraordinary gentlemen do with their guitars.

@@daxmusix Not to quibble, but what I was trying to say was that Grace becomes one with the song, whatever song she is singing. It goes beyond her voice, it is every fiber of her being becomes entwined with the song, as if one cannot exist without the other. Think of your high school chemistry: alcohol cannot exist without water. There is no such thing as 100% alcohol. When Mark Knopfler plays his guitar (perhaps David Gilmore, too) it seems as if one cannot exist without the other. Grace is that way with every song she sings. (At least for me.)

Chance plays such a big part in life...the young woman from Brazil who stayed at Grace's home and inspired Grace to get a ukulele..Grace's mom thinking it would be fun to audition for AGT...I think her new jazzy style may have emerged simply because Grace felt a need to be discreet and relatively subdued at her new school. She says she is still shy about performing in front of people she considers peers, like her fellow students. She is so talented that she simply adjusts her style based on the situation. Who knows, someday she may be doing alternative rock or punk!

That is true except for "Intro (Gucci Shoes)" I think. One other song that should have been on that EP is "You'll Get Bored" which would have made it a perfect six pack about that relationship. She has been getting much better recently about fielding questions about what inspired those songs on Letters Vol 1., she was a little shaky about it that time. Normally I wouldn't mention anything about a boyfriend except she has posted quite a few pictures of him and he even appears in one of her music videos. I think she wanted to/not wanted to tell here fans about him but some things are just too emotional to discuss right now. Even now, some of her latest songs refer back to that relationship. Our sweet Grace is still working through that which is a good thing, like she has said she writes songs to get things off her chest. I have said many times that once Grace started dating she will have an infinite amount of material to write songs about.

I think "infuriated" may be too strong of a reaction! Her most devoted fans do get carried away at times. That's because her music provokes such strong emotions. I agree that labels like ""genius" and "Shakespeare" are probably too extravagant for a sixteen year old singer-songwriter. I have actually cringed at times thinking such high praise might not be good for Grace. I even felt that way a bit when the AGT judges were loading on the compliments. In my view, this all comes about because Grace is just so lovable and people are expressing feelings rather than a true, reality based, nuanced assessment. That type of assessment is best left for the future. In the meantime, though, I'm going to continue on my merry way, loving her music, comparing her to Mozart, and telling the whole world how awesome she is!

Hi Mike. I have to say I don't understand your comment and what's behind it. First, why watch if you keep getting angry? Why get angry at all? It's Dax's opinion and I, for one, usually agree with him. I believe Grace is a songwriting genius, especially her lyrics. So does Dax. We have both repeatedly articulated why we think this. I am 69 and have been a devoted fan of the poet/lyricists of my lifetime. People like Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, etc. Grace has already proven herself to be in that league. You say yourself "she is a very astute and perceptive young woman with extraordinary gifts." So again, why get angry? "Extraordinary gifts" sounds awfully close to "genius" to me.

Well, Mike, first I want to say ditto on what Neil said above. But also, that you are creating a strawman. I didn’t say she was a philosophical genius, though I do think she is a genius of connecting thought and emotion to expression, much like the greats whom I’ve mentioned before. Since you already consider Grace extraordinary, it seems rather extravagant to get upset with somebody who goes perhaps a step further in his characterization. And, to circle around to what Neil said, if you are “rarely” not furious at me, it might be good for your own well-being to not stick around.

@@daxmusix Dax, your channel is so much fun! How about your reaction to Grace's Evangela Christ poem? I think we all considered that existential masterpiece to be leaning into the "philosophical genius" category! To be totally honest, I really do think Grace is a genius. But having said that, have you ever shared my concern that such high praise, justified and accurate as it might be, could put undue pressure on Grace? I don't want her to feel like she always has to surpass her prior work whenever she is working on something new. That would be a terrible burden. Praise can be somewhat embarrassing to receive and, at times, a burden. I just want Grace to continue dancing like "no one's around," noodling on her guitar, and writing more songs for you to call "genius!"
