@@johngreen5837 nah they didn’t hate Jason. They were upset about cliff passing and they felt like Jason was a replacement instead of an addition to their music. Kirk loved Jason and James and Lars got over it later on
@Big Homie Steve The Metal Head I saw them on their last tour and at one point James says "holly shit, I see old people" and someone from the crowd yells out "Yeah, they're on the stage" hahahaha, everyone got a good laugh out of that one
Also if you listen to James dyers eve riff tape, you can feel some magic in this music, riff, melody, can't explain. Also intro/harmony that did not make it to the album is so good.
@@jasonx4008 How can you NOT include Kill 'Em All??? That was where it all started. IMHO there's no better representation of the raw, angry, young, hungry, explosion of thrash, that lurked within this band than their debut! Especially that incredible bass solo Anesthesia/Pulling Teeth by The Legend Cliff Burton. I completely agree with your list, with the exception of the omission of K.E.A. !!!!! \m/
@@bx3556 100% agreed! 2 branches of the same tree! Too hard to call as which one was better.....I love them both! IMHO , 2 of the greatest thrash debuts in music history. I have a bit of bias towards being a rabid fan of both bands. I actually saw Metallica WITH Mustaine back in 83 when they first came to the east coast. Nobody had ever heard of them yet.... They opened up for 2 of our local bands here in Baltimore ( Raven and Archangel) at a club called Coast To Coast...and proceeded to blow both bands off the stage! Met the whole band that night, actually bought a cassette copy of their demo directly from Lars, ( which I still have to this day ) and hung out with them after they played. I was only 15 at the time...technically not even old enough to be in the club...but the drinking age back then was 18, and I could pass for being 18 at 15, lol. Needless to say...I have been a fan ever since. When I heard that they kicked out Dave...and he had formed a new band of his own, I rushed to buy their first release the day it came out. Again...blown away....killer album. In 93, I had the great pleasure of re-meeting Dave and the Megadeth boys after their show at the Towson Center Arena.( STP opened ) Dave "spotlighted" (he literally had the light guy shine a spotlight on us...lol) me and my buddy moving the folding chairs from the front row so we could start a pit! He thought it was great, and said over the mic... "look at these two crazy MF'ers re-arranging the seating!" and had one of their roadies come and give us backstage passes to come meet the band after the show. We ended up on their tour bus hanging out and partying with them. Again...super cool bunch, Dave was incredibly gracious, and we ended up jamming together on a couple of acoustic guitars they had on the bus. He and I actually jammed together on a riff that became the song known as "Trust". So, needless to say...I have a bit of personal bias towards being a fan of BOTH bands. This has ALWAYS been too hard to call...they're BOTH great debut albums. For me personally....it's like asking me if I like steamed crabs or steamed shrimp....I love them both, and can't choose a favorite. I guess the only way that I can sum it up, is that they're the two greatest thrash debut albums off all time!
We had to write a poem about parent/child relationships in English when I was doing my GCSEs. The assignment was met with groans by a lot of us, but one of my classmates had a galaxy brain moment and submitted the lyrics for this song. His gamble that our teacher wasn't familiar with Metallica paid off and the sumbitch got an A* for it XD
@@alexhollon7526 Yeah, word for word. We were 16. Swearing wasn't a massive deal and the coursework was about communicating emotion, which swearing generally does very well :P
Yes! Kill Em All then Lightning, please.I imagine Alex will do RTL next based on the fan request and I love RTL but I'm hoping he goes back to how it started next.
@@John_Locke_108 It wasn't Jethro Tull's fault that they won for an album that didn't deserve to win. The fact that they didn't show up to the awards ceremony is proof. Don't put the blame on Jethro Tull
I’m a Metallica fan since the beginning I have Never left the band. Dyers eve is my fav song of the album, fast aggressive, James is on point on voice and guitar solos Kirk awesome so is Lars and Jason even when the bass is little shady is gold. Metallica forever
the shock effect of the transition from to live is to die to dyers eve has paid off! hahaha I appreciate that you read the comment and followed the suggestion :) the answer to jaymz's addictions are in this song
It's kind of a crazy contrast, being completely vulnerable and scared but it's projected through pure anger, frustration and power. Papa Het might be running one of the biggest band in the world ever but he's still an underrated artist.
It also highlights the true meaning of the ending of To live is to die. The song was never ment to end, which is why Dyers Eve just starts..... Brilliant.
Fun fact: they didn’t perform this song until 2004 because that’s how difficult the drum parts are. They were spliced together in the recording process, and for Lars to perform this song every single night that they promoted the Justice record wouldn’t have been physically possible for him.
That's bullshit, I think Lars could've played this in the justice tour. The closest song in terms of speed would be Battery, which they played every night in the justice tour. I guess seeing them play this in the 80's is something we can only dream about.
I can’t do anything but clap, just clap. That was one hell of a reaction to an amazing album. Hope to see more Metallica reactions, even better if it is an entire album. Thanks!
@@AlexHefner As a fan of Metallica i have to say that i love your reactions videos. Metallica songs means a lot to me and my seven years old son love Metallica too. Im sorry for my english, im from Chile, sudamerica.
This is one of their heaviest, angriest, dirtiest songs. It came out my sr yr in high school. Had a rough upbringing. This song still resonates with me. True test of great music
i REMEMBER WHEN I SAW THEM THE FIRST TIME IT WAS THE MONSTERS OF ROCK TOUR WITH EVERY BIG METAL BAND AT THE TIME AND RIDE THE LIGHTING HAD JUST BEEN RELEASED..I THINK IT WAS SUMMER OF 85 IN BUFFALO WHAT A FUCKIN SHOW THEY EVEN OUT DID OZZY AND EVERYONE ELSE ON THAT TOUR! I WAS LIKE 14 I THINK ..DAMN THAT WAS A LONGTIME AGO!
@@richardforbes943 I was at that concert! They were underground and metal heads were a community back then. We looked out for each other. Man I miss that!
Every. Single. Song. on this album is a 9+/10 for me to this day. After 30+ years of listening to this life changing album, And Justice For All is more powerful now than ever. Thanks for bringing us with you on this one, Alex.
At 2:59 when you said, “That’s so nice,” as you were taking in the gentle outtro…I actually chuckled knowing what was about to happen. Then, 3:20 happened! Lol. Thank you for the genuine reaction.
Back when high-speed dubbing tape cassettes was a thing, one of my best friends made me a copy of this "album" and it became the soundtrack for my bus ride to school everyday in 7th grade. Coming from a deeply religious background it echoed so much truth, and led me into my path of better understanding the world; and allowed me to be angry at the parts I saw to be false. I will forever be grateful to this album and especially this song, and I'm so glad you're finding it and hearing it for the truth that I felt so long ago as an "out of place" teen in a world of religiosity... wondering what was really real, and deciding to question it
My personal favorite Metallica album. Hit me when I was about 12. Fell asleep many nights listing to it. Made those early teen years make so much sense. To this day 30 plus years later still hits home .
This song is great bc it transcends James’ experience - no matter how strict or lenient one’s parents - everyone has had times - sometimes entire lifetimes - where they felt some of the feelings reflected in the lyrics and overall tone of the song.
I love that you are laughing throughout this whole song. It proves without a doubt you are 100% honest and real in your reactions! Thanks Alex, its a blast watching your reactions.
I was 16 when this came out. I experienced what the song is about. This song and this album are a part of my being. It's been a blessing to see you experience it new... you're a good man Alex
It's not over. You still have all of Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, The Black album, Load, ReLoad, Garage Inc., S&M #1, St Anger (If you feel its necessary) Death Magnetic, Hardwired to self Destruct, S&M #2. So no, it's not over yet. And LuLu
@@RandomPerson-ui3xv Same, love almost everything Metallica has put out...except St. Anger and Lulu. Props for experimenting, but the execution was just...not good.
Yea you’re slowly becoming my FAVORITE reaction page. You actually took the time to edit the last 30 seconds of “To live is to die” to make sure the reaction was complete. No other reaction channel has done this that I’ve seen!
@@german2501 the lyrics are more relatable than the hellish dystopia from Fight fire... Mayberry that's why. When it comes to sound and aggression for me Fight is the maximum. Dyers Eve is brilliant and among my favorite 5 Metallica songs. 88 when I was 13 this album was my introduction to the band and it blew me away. Edit: what's a mayberry?!
I'm so happy you included the last bit of "To Live is to Die". Most of us die hard Metallica fans heard this long before the days of streaming, and when the CD goes from one to the next ... it's magical
This album, IMO, is their very finest work of all albums they produced. Every song drives hard, the lyrics are vibrant and meaningful, The riffs, the riffs under the riffs and even the drum arrangements are quintessential.
My parents split for the last time when I was 9 after 5 different attempts at trying to make it work that just made it harder for me to live with out them this song in a nut shell puts my feelings into song form.
ah yes thank you for starting with the ending of To Live is to Die 🤘 This song hits hard for us who grew in religous suppression. Im just starting to deal with the trauma my chruch and family forced on me growing up. The entitlement, the one-way respect, and freedom of robbing your child of anything you didnt provide them. Dont wish this upon any child. Anyone who grew with this kind of trauma please reach out to anyone you can talk to Stay metal, Stay free
Dude sorry to hear when people get church forced upon them. Hopefully that hasn't turned you off from God completely. God is real. Jesus is real. And He loves us all. Don't want to offend anyone. Just hate to see people go through what you did. Give God a chance I hope. On your own terms.
People out there can never avoid this world and what it offers, always temptation which we all fail to. Parents who think they can drag their kids to church to avoid the world's issues obviously dont listen when they attend..its impossible. Knowing is better than not knowing, seeing is believing but can't see anything if one don't look. Its easy to fall, hard to climb back up, no one wants to work hard when they can simply fall. Dragging kids to church without any knowledge of what the world offers can be dangerous cause ones who fall like sex addicts, drug addicts, thieves, heart broken, killers that want change are within the churches to rightfully know understand the meaning of what Christ teaches. Like a hospital that house the sick, the church house the broken. If a church dont have any of the above its probably loaded with false, lost, judgemental, selfish, wealthy people with a moral checklist of what makes them feel good. These people drag kids or other non willing people along to fit their view of clean visually rather spiritually to fit into a worldly society where praying is actually wishing. Moral therapeutic deism. James parents were probably a mix of both, those that understand the lyrics probably had the same treatment, just differently.
Never understand that, my nan used to go to church, I did as a little kid. But I stopped, my mom said to my nan, that we'd choose our own path when we were old enough. So we did, heavy metal and rock music, it's the best religion. Me, my sister and brother are all metal heads. The more intelligence, the less religion.
I bought this record back when Walmart would let you sample CDs. I heard a 30 second sample of "One". And roughly 4 months later, I'm playing guitar. That was 22 years ago.
OMG I was waiting for this song so long 💥 killer song with a killer guitar solo and I won't even start talking about James' ability to writing lyrics 💯🔥💥
Damn...love these album reactions and journey you invited us on...thanks,Alex What’s super crazy is that this is like...30 years old lol. Imagine hearing this 30 years ago...it was insane.
Why do I love it so much when I see someone else enjoying Metallica for the 1st time, like he does? Dyers eve hits so close to home for me as well pal. Right here with you Alex! Rawk on 🤘
You're the most favorite person on youtube! You're reactions are epic! One of the most genuine people on youtube. I thank you for pulling me through my darkest times. You, my man, are fucking awesome! 🤘😀
Ride the lightning and for whom the bell tolls are my absolute favourite songs from metallica, to the point the bell tolls is to be played at my funeral.
Great album, great year for heavy music. I was 17 years old when this album dropped, wow!!. Still as passionate about heavy music now as i was then, its in the blood. Love your channel man, Love from the uk.🤘
I'll say this. I used to be a Metallica freak some 12 years ago, and they were by far the MAIN reason I started learning the guitar. I was a smol baby teen back then, and I loved the entire catalogue back then - Death Magnetic had just come out back then. The only exception was ...Justice. The songs on this album always seemed too complicated, all over the place. I have been avoiding ...Justice for the longest time. But, Alex, your reaction chain has made me realise what a gem this record actually is. I guess I just wasn't mature enough back then to appreciate it. Yes, I think that's the right word. This album is very mature. Compared to the straightforward riff'n'thrash of the first 3 and, on the other hand, slowing down the pace starting with The Black Album - this is Metallica's most complex work, and being currently a deathcore consumer, that's exactly why I dig ...Justice now. Hey, better late than never!
Alex. Love these so so so much. You gotta do kill em all full album. Ride the lightning full album. Then since you've done puppets and justice, move to the black album 🤘🏻🤘🏻
the frayed ends of sanity has to be my favorite metallica song of all time (this comes from a guy in Chile with a fucking metallica tattoo on his shoulder) much love to you bro, for allowing us to go along with you in this ride!
For the RIDE THE LIGHTNING ALBUM, could you possibly pick videos with the lyrics in it for the people in the back who are experiencing greatness for the first time as well. Thank you Alex.
Here til the end of every video...so much respect and love sent back your way, always! This was so much fun I waited all day 💕🤘🏼 I already cast my vote for ride the lightning next...I see that you have hundreds of people that feel the same way, can’t wait for it! FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE can’t fucking wait✨🌻♌️
RIIIIDEEEE NEXT!!!! Also Dyers Eve is such a hard hitter both lyrically and musically and that intro never ceases to give me goosebumps and I've heard it thousands of times over the last 13 years... so good!
Alex Hefner, anyone who appreciates this song like you did is a brother or sister to me. Really nice to see someone get this after I've been listening to this since 1988
Hi, its become part of my daily routine watching your videos especially the Mighty MetallicA !!! I try to read as many comments as possible but you get so many, you probably won't get to read this but I have to say it. I love how you really feel the songs how true MetallicA fans feel them and relate to them. Its clear to me that you are now too a true MetallicA fan. Welcome to the family. FYI Fade to Black on Ride the Lightning is the best song ever written......Fact. I will try and support you as much as possible and will be buying some merchandise..........that being said, have a dope ass day.
Garage Days Re-Revisited - 5 song EP of massively heavy covers that Metallica put out between Master of Puppets and AJFA. Jason Newsted's intro to the band, where you could actually hear his thick, sludgy bass.
