Scotland fans want Wales and Ireland to do well. Even the Lionesses were broadly supported. Scotland's distaste of the England team rests largely on the basis of the insufferable media coverage (like this guy), filled with pundits who believe it's England's divine right to win. In recent years, when the discussion around the team has been less over the top, there has been more support from up north than in the past.
Ireland fans want Scotland and Wales to do well too. It's always been the way. England have let themselves down too often ie Landsdowne Road 95, any match abroad really. I think Scotland got stitched up in Spain the other night but good luck in the Euros. Great play Clarke has done an amazing job. If England fans and media weren't the way they are people would support them. But the disgusting stuff even the last final where they ran through security utter scumbags support them.
Darren is pretty much spot on with this. The only reason the other home nations tend not to want England to do well is purely the levels of arrogance a lot of English fans that just hasn't been earned. A touch of humility would go a long way.
You mean like the arrogance the Scottish fans had when you won five on the bounce? Thinking you were gonna smash us in the friendly in September? Jokers.
English supporters expect their country to do well, and to be honest the players took the piss alot of the time. It was not until Southgate that they started to really grind out wins.
Scotland will not get out of the group. Ireland didn’t get into the tournament. Somehow this discussion is an attempt to make both teams / Nations relevant.
Club rivalry is different. It's a weekly battle. The tension and banter between supporters is at a fever pitch. I'd like to see the home nations do well. Because it's good for the sport. You can't allow yourself to be so insecure.
Am Scottish and iam pleased we are there Steve clarke and the players done great job however the biggest challenge for us is always getting out a group. I hope we can put up a big challenge whoever we get in group stage it will be tough but pleased we are there.
Darren Bent talking his usual nonsense. No sane England fan EVER expects to (or says we will) win any tournament . Especially with Southgate in charge.
It works the other way as well. I remember about a decade ago when buying the paper was a thing he won the 3rd round or 4th round of a major and it said "Brilliant Brit Murray seals QF place" Then a few days later "Sorry Scot Murray eliminated"
Same. Although they were worse 20-30 years ago than now. Southgate (although many of the fans are gunning for him) very smartly tried to dampen down that tendency to unmerited footballing jingoism that was more apparent before. It's utterly self-defeating but the media used to do it again and again and again (and a lot of them still try). Build them up before, make the fans think glory is destined (forgetting previous results), then knock them down after and find that scapegoat. It used to be the media's whole financial model (and still is in some places). I always felt a bit sorry for the players and manager in amongst it all (if they themselves weren't amping it up).
Good on him fir being honest! No Scottish person wants England to do well but England people are always saying i hope scotland get through and its just patronising!
Any team from these isles wether england scotland wales or ireland, i want them to do well, when england went out i supported wales, im watford fan and i always support the english or scotish teams in champions league, too many haters and divides in my opinion, headlines like this and andy goldstein i dont agree
All the haters are on the Scottish and Welsh side of things. I grew up wanting to see all British teams win, until I learned about how the Scotch support whoever we play against, and celebrate when we lose. Why would I support a nation who feels that way about us? Nah. Being a quarter Welsh I used to support Wales, but in recent times they've been just as toxic towards us as the Scotch, so nah, they can bog off as well. Having some Irish roots, I always want to see the two Irish national teams doing well, and I don't see the same rabid, mass-hate towards us from the Irish as we get from the Scotch and Welsh. There are some Irish people who hate us but they don't have the same collective hate as the others so I still support them. I don't consider my choices to be based on hate, it's more of a reaction to the hate of others.
@@JohnRoberts-il9ie Am I supposed to just ignore thousands of comments I've seen online over the years from Scottish and Welsh fans hating England? And thousands of naive England fans supporting Scotland and Wales? I'm not denying your personal situation but perhaps you're more the exception than the rule.
I want Scotland to qualify, but then I'm an odd football fan that wants everyone to do well as long as it isn't against my team. Never really understood the whole, I want my rival's to lose every game. Surely you should want them to win every game so that when you beat them it means more.
I remember in 74 and 78 I for one wanted the Scots to do well ( but Not win ) the W C - ten years on doing battle with em . Now yeah I want Scotland to qualify only so we can spank them We England but Nobody else 🇬🇧 .
@jamescorlett5272 I'm not old enough for that, but I do remember 96. The whole tournament was great but that match was special. I'm an Arsenal fan. But I'd love to see Spurs make it all the way to FA Cup final... and then lose to us!
I'm Scottish and have a similar opinion about the other home nations. My priority is Scotland obviously but I'd like to see the other home nations do well (without being all that invested). The only exception is if the fans and media of one of them is dismissive and disrespectful of other countries or are playing a horrible style of football, both of which have been the case at times with England but hasn't been recently (by and large barring these media figures whose financial model depends on sensationalism and being contrary) since Southgate has been in charge. Bent is correct that the talk about having the best team and being destined to win turns others against you. Boasting is a bit annoying if it's Brazil but, fair enough, they have a record of winning things (most of the time although not currently) but it comes across as insecurity if it's a team without that history. And I hate when the media pre-game write off other teams. It's disrespectful but it's also self-defeating. I never understood that inclination. I'd always be more inclined to play things down and try to progress through the tournament quietly rather than do all the chest-beating stuff and then look foolish afterwards. For a start, it tends to bring better results to be quietly confident rather than loud and obnoxious about it.
@@alasdairduncan3796 as irrelevant as it is that you’ll get pumped in the groups and go home immediately. At least you can keep telling yourselves that Scotland fans are the ‘best in the world’.
@@michaelrimmer338I'd love to be in a pub in England when the Euros are on and when Germany, Switzerland or Hungary score against us and the England fans go wild I'd first ask them what part of that nation they came from then I'd remind them of all the wars they've dragged us into then also remind them of how they BEGGED us to vote No in the Independence Referendum. Love Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Hate England
The arrogance of English fans on here doesn't surprise me at all. The usual craic . Coming from a team that hasnt won anything in 50 plus years, a country whos media predicts them to win every time but still loses. Big up Darren Bent for being sound
As a Scotland fan I have no interest in how England, Wales or Northern Ireland do or Gibraltar for that matter seen as they are technically British. I have no connection to either of these countries so it fries my brain when people expect you to support the other 'home nations'. I would rather support Spain as my wife is Spanish and I have more connection to there.
Yes I do want them to qualify, I always like as many home nations to qualify as possible, I find Drive hard to listen to thee days with Andy Goldstein as a host, he talks crap, and rushes everything
Same. Other people project their own pettiness onto you. People ought to try to understand that there is no uniform opinion and different people have different opinions. Most people - however - dislike jingoism wherever it exists so that might skew appearances.
Still celebrating that meaningless 0-0 victory, huh? England: 1 point, top of our group, made the final. Scotland: 1 point, bottom of the group (again), sat at home trolling England for the rest of the tournament. Ewan McGregor was right all along, it really _is_ "shite being Scottish." 😂
@@sauldavidson6292 England are superior because we progress through tournaments, unlike Scotchland. Our success is not defined by our results against the Scotch. Get over yourself!
Are people forgetting Scotland are the 2nd highest rank team in there group? Credit to them. But they should be qualifying in that group.. they have many players who play for top clubs fighting for trophies
Not that many. Our first choice team play for....Norwich, Brentford, Watford, Al-Etifaq, Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Celtic, Brighton, Man Utd, Aston Villa and QPR. It's okay but it's no better than other teams around our level. We were 2nd seeds but Spain, by most people's reckoning, are far ahead of us, Norway are a team tipped to rise in the coming years and we'd have an eye on that happening this time around, Georgia have tripped us up before (they probably have a good overall record against us) and Cyprus have caused us problems before too. We also didn't qualify for any tournament for 22 years before 2020 which is a bit of a habit. All in all, qualification is an achievement rather than a formality until we can consistently qualify for tournaments (and I suspect smaller countries like us tend not to do that unless they are like Croatia or Uruguay - others have a spell where they are doing okay and then drop away again and this is our okay spell).
The reason we don't want England to win anything is because I was born 32 years after 1966 but every time they get past their group it's rammed down my throat by commentators and pundits and adverts on TV. Same with that garbage song. If you guys toned down the arrogance and just did the graft we'd probably be a bit more supportive.
Scotland have a 5m population and that would compare (approx) to North London. IF NORTH LONDON HAD A TEAM and remember its born there etc ,not live there, then I am confident Scotland would give them a game at least. Considering our size we are doing quite well. It is a case of arrogance typifies England's media and expectations and they are reasonably in the top 16(Maybe top 8 )in tthe world , but unlikely to make the top four. Compare like with like and we do okay. We will produce the odd top player but never have eleven of them .We may occasionally manage 4 or 5. but 2/3 is more probable.WE DO NOT EXPECT TO WIN AGAINST THE BEST and keep our feet on the ground. We are currently on a better squad than of late and Steve Clarke gets the best out of them. Expectations are modest in keeping with our size.
That is some serious copium. If thats the case then why arent Turkey dominant? And why are Georgia, Slovenia, Slovakia all qualifying for knockout stages. And even Iceland previously. Also you are acting like half the Scottish players arent English, what you mean have to be born there? So even Scott McTominay by this isnt Scottish. Imagine how bad youd be if only players born in Scotland can play for Scotland. Also 3/4 semi finalists in last 4 tournaments thats not arrogance its factual. You will all have a complete meltdown if we win it.
I dont care about england unless theyre playing us or close to winning a tournament because the fans are insufferable as it is if they won a tournament my god it would be hell
commentators bringing up 1966, newpapers printing jibes at germany, fans being hosed back by water canons and they will lose to penalties. do you want england to qualify?
As s scot, this is fine where football is concerned. How many spurs supporters want Arsenal to win the champions league? However, If the British Isles were to be invaded, tho, we would all fight on the same side. Football rivalry is fine
I've no problem at all with England wanting us to lose but what I'll never get is the English wanting to lose while calling us xenophobic for doing the same thing.
Interesting debate, because non indigenous Britons have a more British identity whereas indigenous Britons have more increasingly (or always had) a home nations identity.
@GamerFrisco would not won't it to happen but remember the Welsh came within minutes of doing so - should we meet em All the pressure will be on England .
Underdogs can get results in one off games. England aren't on my radar though (I'm Scottish). I'll be watching just to see whether we can get through the groups. Qualification alone is an achievement. Of course, once you are there you want to go one further all the time but we tend to be pragmatists rather than fantasists so although we'll hope it'll always be tempered with some realism as we're a country that has tended not to qualify.
@McJ-ry2de what's the chances of England / Scotland being in the same group to keep the British together - 50 /50 depending on how the German's wanna play it - either way should we meet England shall humiliate your boys to the point you'll never wanna qualify again .
So it's arrogance when England think they're going to win (which is not the attitude of the vast majority of England fans, by the way), according to Benty. But one minute later in this video, when Scotland "always knew they were going to qualify" for the Euros, thaaaaaaaat's okay!! So when one team is confident, it's arrogance, when the other team is confident, no-one bats an eyelid. Not much hypocrisy there then! Get out of my face with your double standards.
Fair enough, would say in recent years that’s changed a bit, especially when the media coverage of Englands Devine right to win every competition has died down a bit
Aye, and you lot bottle every chance to win a tournament you get!! Easiest route to a final any top nation has ever got and you still couldn’t win it. 😂
how are you Norwegian you think you can actually beat Spain ( i hope you do so we top but you wont) we wont drop points against Georgia when we got super jhon mcginn@@LordHighness
I will support whoever Scotland's opponents are, and I will laugh when Scotland are inevitably knocked out early doors. 😂 I also have a framed painting on my living room wall of Scotland's depleted and defeated soldiers losing the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, and our heroic forces cheering and celebrating our important historic victory. Classic stuff. Scottish tears still falling about it, over 100 years later. 🤣
No i dont want them to qualify. We will have to see men prancing round in skirts (kilts) and hear those god awful bagpipes... offensive to the eyes and ears. Well theyve lost their last 3 to "real" competition, i think theyll be on a early plane home after the group stages. Good riddance
