Not all scientists wear white coats.
I've decided to see what's outside of academic research, but I'm not ready to quit being in science! And to start off my quest into the outside world, I did an internship at the Science Media Centre.

The academic track is nothing more than an elusive dream and a game of chance nowadays! I returned to academia after 5 years of biotech, just because I had unfinished business, and really wanted to experience what it's like to do true research. BUT I'm very realistic and already anticipate to go back to industry! Glad I've found your channel and videos!

So you are in London now! Science media is an amazing career direction. I would like to do it if my English is good enough-- or maybe I can do it when we move back to China some day! It's good to see Matt and Chan in the video too! Oxford is not that far from London, so maybe we should plan a reunion:-).

Love your videos! They really let us know how is like working as a scientist. Just a question, do you know anything about research in industry and how is it different from the academic one?

Thanks! Research in academia and industry (generally) comes down to a) the amount of money available and b) the quality control. So in industry you have more money to spend on equipment and resources and stuff generally happens a lot faster. But you also have to record everything that happens in the lab and adhere to stricter operating procedures. In academic research these procedures aren't as strict, but you can be limited by the amount of money available depending on the grant. Hope this helps :)

Same... Thinking piloting or military. "If you can become a scientist youd be able to evaluate and determine you probably shouldnt become a scientist"
