When you sing, you wanna think of pushing down with your diaphragm instead of up so you're not pushing from your throat. You also wanna make sure you don't lift your shoulders up when you support with your breath. Hopefully, I made this make sense.

I love how this song has morphed in my head as years have gone by. We did this play my Senior Year of High School. No I didn't get the part. I was too young then to really understand the wistful twinge remembering the happiness of yesteryear, and not enough experience with how much life can beat you up and kick you when you're down to bring that much despair. Even if I had gotten the part there is no way I could truly get an inner dialog going to sing this back then. The way you imagine a feeling that you've never actually felt, and actually living that feeling are total worlds apart. At least for me. I haven't experienced her highs and lows, but I've experienced my own. An inner dialog I use to pull out the feelings in the song. And there is a vast change in how I sing this song now in my 30's, than way back then. It's fascinating, beautiful, and a bit sad. And I'm sure the song will get even more colorful in my head as the years pass by even further, hopefully in the wistful past portion and not the how far into hell can I fall part. This song is a roller coaster of human emotions and I love it.

Trying to put as much emotion into it as Anne Hathaway did in the movie was hard, all that breathing she does in between to make herself sound shaky is hard as fuck

If you're practicing for stage, my advice is: it's best not to emulate Anne Hathaway, as you won't get anywhere near enough volume/resonance to fill a theatre. You'll be out of breath entirely by the second verse. Best to stay controlled and subdued until the bigger notes; even then you should rely more on facial expressions than on vocal distress. If you're not practicing for stage, then by all means, Anne's performance was excellent for the movie, so enjoy doing what you feel most comfortable doing! ☺

yeah the movie is sometimes being too realistic with the emotions and such but that doesn't really translate well to the stage, or any live singing outside the movie honestly. I'd try to balance it out

When I was 13, my local theatre did Les Mis: School Edition and I got Fantine. I loved this song and sang my heart out to it. Les Mis was only my second show with the theatre troop, but I ended up getting a main character and ever since I've gotten a main character in every performance we've done. My music teacher was super impressed with all the emotion I put into it while still singing it almost flawlessly, so she recommended that I do it for a talent show one day. I haven't yet, but I'm planning on doing it for my high school talent show this year. If I do, I will be using this karaoke track!
