Thanks for the cool video showing us this historic sight, but Only 1000 miles, that is nothing for a newer vehicles, you should drive to Canada, Alaska or Florida keys to see if it has any reliability issues, at least 4k miles to test it and on the way hitting some good off roading parks
That gate is an example of why a pair of bolt cutters is a part of my standard off-road kit. People here an annoying habit of gating public class VI roads.
Gets a new Defender to drive, writes off the expenses for work, gets paid for work, gets to see all that stuff. This folks, is why you dont go to college and get a degree in art history. This is why you go to school maybe to get a good degree you can use quickly to stack cash then start your own business!
Tommy, any chance you can share your trip itinerary on Google maps? I would love to do the same road trip once we will be ok to travel across borders. Thanks in advance!
I wish they did more adventure videos like this, not only review videos. They have the high quality production and the gear and rigs and the locations to do it. Would love to see more of these kind of videos while at the same time giving a nice review on how the rig did.
You need to star your Discover American channel. Ask for a manufacturer to sponsor you and in each state ask the tourist department to sponsor you and take us for a ride.
The "America the Beautiful" pass allows you unlimited access to national parks for a full year for $80. It paid for itself on my trip out west a couple years ago.
I discovered the Badlands and Mt Rushmore on a majical Cross Country trip in my brand new 1972 Citroen🤩 truly unforgettable 😁U guys do a great job 👏👏👏Nice video
I really enjoyed the combination -car review / destination info / new site landscape videos ! Please do again and I have been waiting fir more LR content! 👍🇨🇦
30 or so years ago my wife and I from the UK travelled from Denver over the Rockies, Salt lake and back round. No real off roading though we had a Chevy Blazer on hire. Best vacation I’ve ever had. Snow in Yellowstone July 5th. Yeah bring a jacket.
Reliability - whenever I think of TFL and the Defender I think of unfair complaining about what I consider to be a fake reliability problem to the point where I'm losing confidence in TFL. That behavior must be good for RU-vid ratings. Glad that Tommy emphasized "no problems" in this video. As I recall, the first TFL Defender had a problem of unknown type (dealer wouldn't or didn't tell TFL what the problem was). The other so called "problem" was a winch installation error by the dealer. That is not a car problem. Since the first base model Defender that was swapped out, I believe there have been zero functional issues. If I forgot something material, I'm sure I will be corrected by other viewers and that is fine. I'm all for fair and honest reporting. True - the reliability is unproven and I think probably likely to be less than what you'd find in a Toyota that employs less bleeding edge technology and no air shocks. But, let's give the Defender a break and more fair reporting. FWIW, I do not and never have owned any Land Rover, Range Rover, or Defender and I have no dog in this fight as far as the brand or car goes.
This review demonstrates the best use of this type of vehicle-not rock crawling, but more like a good family vacation or road trip vehicle that can do some mild off-roading.
Great post, such an interesting location. The Defender seemed the perfect choice for the trip, super capable and more comfortable than pretty much anything in the class. Excellent!
Unbelievable scenery, so much space and nature! The scale of those states, off the charts if you like me live in a small country (Netherlands). Great video!
Tommy, I absolutely loved this and hope to see you do more overlanding, 4x4ing a lot more! The 28 dislikers were stoned and accidentally clicked the wrong thing
Tommy the locked gate on the forest road is actually illegal, getting anyone to do something about it though is hard. The roads are supposed to be open and some sheriffs will tell you to cut the lock but I would call and talk to them first. People moving out on forest roads and locking gates are causing problems and they will be heavily fined if there is a fire and they lock the gate.
I went to South Dakota 3 years ago and found this ghost town called Tinton, we wanted to go there but we didn't want to get stuck in our rented Nissan Rogue, the trail was a bit rough
Beautiful country. I like Custer State Park. Glad you fully disclosed the costs as you went, to give us an idea of funds needed. Too bad there was no phone number on the gate so they can open it for you. More please Tommy 👍🏻
Totally agree, I have a 2017 Discovery diesel with 42,000 miles and it still drives like new. I have had one issue and that was a Tire Pressure Monitoring system fault, which was fixed in about 20 minutes a dealer under warranty. Awesome road trip vehicle, tons of torque, super quiet and roomy.
$3.40 a Gal for Premium and you’re complaining?? In Alberta (where most of your gas comes from) we are currently paying $1.25 per Litre! That’s $4.00 per Gal for REGULAR! Suck it up Tommy 😉
Where was Tommy's cover of "The Black Hills of Dakota" from Calamity Jane? And no mention of "Close Encounters....." when visiting Devils Tower (or a closer look to see if Richard Dreyfuss was at its base doing some renovations..) - both movies a bit before Tommy's time I guess. There's a lot of negativity (rightly) aimed at many of the US's cities, but it has to be said that South Dakota has some absolutely breathtaking scenery - thanks for sharing it.
About to make a trip from east TN (home) to Montana going down though yellowstone and Lake Tahoe, hooverdam Nevada and back I-40east. 10 day adventure in my new 2021 4runner venture. Will be sure to hit Mount Rushmore.
So it's not really an off road vehicle. Promotes electronics but lags in it. Uses premium fuel with crap gas mileage. Many service issues (Knowing plenty of people that actually own them). And super expensive for what you get. They only thing it has are the somewhat good looks.
Living in the Midwest as you easily can see, we are serious about dependability. We won't tolerate spending lots of money for a vehicle that leaves you stranded in the middle of nowhere. First time you get caught in a blizzard or thunderstorms In a dead vehicle you will start cussing the company that built it. Vehicles in this area get names and reputations. A Ford fanatic will buy a truck but won't touch an explorer. We nickname them Exploders because the engines and drivetrain are guaranteed to fail you. They cost more money than their worth to fix. Only the people living in towns or cities buy them. Take notice of the old SUVs that pass you or the trucks.
I really have not seen anything that my 5 year old Grand Cherokee couldn’t do with ease. And I can get close to 30 mpg on the highway. I just don’t see anything special about the Land Rover, except the price, and the sheer terror of wondering where it will leave you stranded.
It's quite a while since you guys posted this but if you guys see this: Love these types of videos. Vlogging and adventure type videos are one of my favorites and I love to plan what I will do in the future and find hidden gems like this. For some feedback, maybe put the exact locations in a doc in the description? Thanks. Looking forward to the next one!
Good to see Americans outside the major cities are still Americans (no tesla). The town on needles highway was so cool, classic layout like hotel, diner, sheriff, saloon, bar.
Next time you’re in the Black Hills be sure to check out the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs!! Super cool fossil site with 61 mammoth skeletons piled on top of each other
Great video guys. I did a similar trip with my dad when I was completing a cross country move and outside of the national parks, not a whole lot to see in SD. The landscape gets way more interesting as you start getting into Montana, specifically west Montana!
Tommy 🙂, this video is truly everything, thank you. I live in Rapid City, so you and your friend were in my backyard. I'm happy you enjoyed your time up here in the 605.
It is sort reassuring that you have the same frustrations and disappointments with your national park gates, fees and 'tours' as we do in Australia. We have the added disappointment of our park services neglecting the trails or gating them and letting weeds and feral animals run free. Then there is their insistence on allowing fuel loads to increase until wildfires ravage the forests and cause permanent damage. Apart from thst, they do a great job...
In such a free country as the United States, you can simply turn off the road, for example, into the forest? Or you can only drive on permitted polygons.
this is awesome. I did most of this trip (wall, badlands, devil's tower, Rushmore) last summer. It's an underrated part of the country because it's so rural but I love it. Thanks for the video.
Tommy, if you want to fill in that hole that was bothering you so much, there is a filler plate available: www.powerfuluk.com/vehicles/land-rover/defender/new-defender-2020/land-rover-defender-2020-wireless-charging-tray.html
