I Drove 240 Miles to BRIGHTON for FISH AND CHIPS in THE LANES but was it worth the trip? 

I’m from Hove and I’ve eaten at Rybka a few times now. A little pricey, but the quality is superb. The guy that runs the place (featured in this video) is incredibly friendly too. 10/10 🐟 🍟

That looked fabulous Lee. So often when ordering fish and chips in a restaurant setting you lose that essence of the proper chippy because they try to pretty everything up. But this fella seems to have it spot on. Great that he’s thrown a little bit of his home country into it too. Really good find.

Love the drone footage Lee and what a cool chippy, the haddock and chips look nicely cooked. It’s a 9 from me as I have to knock off one point for the lack of cutlery because if I’m eating in I expect proper cutlery no excuses. 👍🙂

I like Brighton, it's a vibrant city though I haven't been since the early to mid 2000s. When you entered the place I thought it looked nice with the tables etc, but was disappointed when your meal arrived in a box with wooden cutlery. I was glad to hear the explanation you gave for this at the end though, which was good. You said they would be having real cutlery and 'trays' whatever they are, real plates would be better. The meal looked nice enough to me also, although I'm confused as to if there was skin on your fish, why wasn't it that noticable, I would never want skin on my fish. This wasn't perfect for me I'm afraid, so I'll give it a 7/10. Really enjoyed the video though, and how so much has changed in Brighton since I last visited.

Come to sunny Eastbourne! So many great fish and chips! Also Bannoffee pie was invented in Jevington near Eastbourne. The great Tommy Cooper had a holiday home here too. There's the Harvey's brewery in Lewes too.

My Nan and Grandad, retired to Seaford just along the coast from Brighton in 1978, and that burnt out pier was there back then. Obviously there is no rush to remove it. LOL That Fish N Chip shops looked inviting, even though Im'm not fish fan.

Ah MM wish you'd let us know when you were visiting Brighton! You've got loads of Southerners that watch you! And heaps more beautiful places for you to visit and places to eat. I live in Brighton and also follow Bald and Bankrupt, the guy you are referring to is JohhnyFD, he did three videos in Brighton and tried two different Fish and Chip shops, the other one he tried was Little Jack Fullers which is my local and is pretty good and was featured in the first video. Harry Ramsdens is still open but it’s not particularly good. Most fish comes with the skin on down south, as for the price, pretty much everything is more expensive than up north. The West Pier burnt down in 2003 but had been closed to the public since 1975.

Really pleased you reviewed this place - my husband and me think it’s the best fish and chips ever. The owners are lovely and friendly and you can tell they really care about making great food. Coincidentally with your Bald and Bankrupt and Johnny FD reference, we were in Rybka the day the Ukraine conflict started and we were telling the owner that we were worried about them as we had watched their livestreams from central Kyiv that morning!

So the west pier has been hit by a ship, half destroyed by a storm, before finally being burned down under mysterious circumstances (definitely not by the owners of the other pier, oh no) West pier remains because it's iconic, loved by locals, and is strangely beautiful backlit by a sunset, it will be sad when it finally collapses for good

Locals are very fond of the West Pier. She's has a long history and suffered multiple fires and storms but still stands albeit not much left of her. The West Pier area was always more where locals would go whereas the Palace Pier (Brighton Pier) has always been more for tourists.

Enjoyed the video I think that the Pier that was burned down is under plans to be restored but has been delayed. The local resident and former Boxer Chris Eubank was involved at one point!

Not sure if you have been told about this before (or reviewed it) ..but in the Black Country you can get "orange chips" from the chip shop. You should check them out in one of your visits!

I'll immediately mark down any chip shop that doesn't offer cod as an option , everything looked lovely but placing the chips around the fish is just a way to get around giving the customer a smaller portion but his explanation a clever decoy , then there's the price 😱 A 7 at best from me.

Yeah, the West Pier was virtually destroyed by fire in 1990, but was basically left to rot! No money to restore it, and I think it's listed, hence it's just been left to the elements. I first went to Brighton in 1991, when the building on the end was basically intact but seperated from land! A great shame!

A Polish man beating the British at their own game. Skin on for me too (I’m from daan South), looked brilliant to me. Know nothing about Brighton other than Quadrophenia and various antique programs. Plus the burned down pier that Drew Pritchard (Salvage Hunters) tried to buy some old railings from in an episode. Like the look of the place. May have to visit sometime. 10/10

The west pier is a Grade 1 listed building hence why it's still there after the fire.

Everything was excellent as I would expect- nice big portions of haddock done golden, chips pictured as only u could imagine in a magazine &’the mushy peas in a nice shamrock green…I can only imagine the smell!!🎉 I wish this was 60 years ago when fish n chips came rolled up in the newspaper carrying home dinner to my parents as a good deed for the day!! 10/10 u found a good 1 Lee!! 10/10 PS Wonder if they could put the smell in an aerosol ?? A touch pricey, but Brighton is tourist area. Very good haddock and chips. Fresh fish and plenty of it. Good to leave skin on as the man said. Nice sides oo, chips, peas, curry sauce. Cool cafe. 9 from me.

Speaking of fish n chips, just been in Brid for the weekend. Couldn't believe how much they cost now. To take away they were 25 quid. That was for 3 times. Then the next day to eat in (although we ate in the outside bit) 3 tines, 1 bottle of beer, 1 coffee was 45 quid! Madness On the subject of Bridlington Lee you should visit the Cow Shed at Fraisthorpe....the breakfasts looked amazing!!! Then you could sample some of Brids finest fish n chips later

Darn it, I would have gone there last week myself when I went down for a couple of days but it was closed Sun-Mon. 😢 That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the ever reliable Brighton Smokehouse which I told you about on a previous vid. Looked cracking Lee, I will try next time. 😊

Definitely a 10 out of 10 the haddock and the chip were lovely and fresh as well as tasty. Stayed in Brighton three years ago. Have promised to go back. Such a lovely place to visit.

I can't believe you didn't find any Antique Shops. But you went to Brighton and got truly Rogered! You found a back alley and a Brighton Pier but you were the one that screwed. I was screaming at the screen, Its in a Box! The Cutlery was Wooden and yet you got little ceramic terrines for the peas & curry sauce & a glass for his cola. It looked ok though, despite there being not much of it for the £18.20. He really pulled your trousers down. 6/10

a late friend of mine owned 3 f&c shops in Scarborough, always Haddock should be cooked with the skin on to give it flavour, Cod was cooked skinless

As soon as I saw the word Rybka, I instantly thought, little fish and knew you would have a great fish & chips. The Polish are fantastic food connoisseurs. My family only live 20 km away from Brighton, so this will be on my to do list on my next visit.

2003 was a catastrophic year for the West Pier. On 28th March the Pavilion was destroyed in an arson attack, and then on 11th May the Concert Hall, already seriously damaged in a huge storm the previous December, was also deliberately set on fire

Didn’t last long for the cost of living crisis series to finish. Expensive for that.

Just a thought... If they stuck to boxes and wooden cutlery but made sure they recycled properly, that would be a win win all round. No plastic cutlery or polystyrene trays, less electric not using the dishwasher as much, profits must be better for the shop, no broken plates or stolen knives and forks, It does happen and does it really matter if it's on a plate? If you can't eat it all just take it with you in the box and recycle! With that in mind they could afford to drop the price. Way too expensive for me.

From Brighton, they can’t take the pier down because it’s grade 2 listed. And it’s also part of history now, so the council want to keep it as a talking point

Love Brighton although it’s been a few years since I last went there. Love all the little lanes and the Royal Pavilion. Those fish & chips looked pretty good Lee and like yourself I prefer without skin. Just wondering though what happened to the plate?

A day trip to Brighton, the meal £18.20p is a bit rich but its a Restaurant after all. Is there a takeawy price. Any thing you buy in this toursit Town you must add the extortionate price of parking your car. Even locals ie 20 miles away avoid it .

Hi Lee another good blog you where on about looking after local family business where I live there is a family run farm shop and restaurant called Becketts farm which as award winning breakfast you might like to try if you are ever in the Birmingham area it’s about 1 minute drive from junction 3 of the m42 going in the direction of Birmingham just a thought

Lee, eating in didn’t warrant a wooden knife and fork, looked a bit greasy as the box was soaked with grease …. But at least you got over the skin on saga. Taking in mind all the reasons for cutlery and serving in a box, I’ll give it a score of 5 on looks, 👍

Yes that was a solid 10 without a doubt the best fish and chips I ever had was is Folkstone it was so good we went back and ordered an another fish

Question pre blanched chips & recooked or cooked from start to finish, most fish & chip shops where I used to live (Northants) use the later, blanching them is to make the outer crispier (like french fries & not traditional chips)

That pier was like that when i first went there 22 years ago (2000) and i think it had been like that over 10 years then.

Picked the wrong fish and chip restaurant, should have gone a couple of miles away to Ramsbottoms in Blachington Road Hove, an independent outlet that never disappoints... I actually drive 3 miles past several outlets to eat there...

Agree about Harry Ramsden's, Im from Bradford, and the family sold out to commercialism and they are crap, had some at Airport and frozen fish , appalling, support family run business. Originally Bradford one at Guisley was fabulous.

I used to go to Wetherby a lot on a Saturday night and We’d end up at the Wetherby Whaler. I always thought they were good fish and chips.
