Previous Boirault Video: • This Machine Actually ...
Welcome to another episode of Scrap Mechanic! Today I am modifying the Boirault Machine that I built a few days ago and making improvements to the issues that made it such a failure when it was first tested. It couldn't move very fast, was unable to turn efficiently, and would bottom itself out on its own tracks at just a slight decline in terrain angle. In 2022, we can do better.

The problem is (as always) with sm's optimisation and how it handles rigid body updates, when you turn game tries to make track more "stable" so it reduces physical updates for it, this is mostly done due to the fact that when big body with a big area touches the ground the physics engine counts not one big collision but rather a lot of small 1 point collisions, which lags out the game. Until devs took (which as they said in QnA they are doing for chapter 2) a deep dive into physics engine they just made game "to not really think about it" when such collision is detected, when you put weight on the track it just updated it and the game's like oh? we're moving? so until more work is done on the physics this problem is to stay. I hope I explained it well)

@JamUsagi

Probably not, because there’d still be gaps in the barrier so the tracks can go to 45 degrees. Since it tends to derail between tracks, there’s little benefit and it’d just add extra weight.

I actually built one of these, and I've completely solved this, and it isn't by using a deeper grove. Running down the center of the tread is a rail like lip, and the vehicle clamps to the rail using two separate clamps. If the track leaves the reasonable tolerance for the center rail, you unhook the front from the seem, hop the gap, and then re-rail the front. After that, detach the rear and your good. Is this completely rediculus for a design like Scrapman's? Yes, but in my design, the tread is super heavy, so this helps to keep the carrage from tipping over, and also helps my gears mesh with my toothed track design.

Good job! You fixed so many issues with this machine. But, (this is my opinion) I feel like the turning mechanism isn’t the best it could be. Because it has such a small contact patch and it will have to bear basically all the weight of the whole machine, if you were on say mud, the wheel would most likely just fall through the mud due to the pressure (or large amount of force exerted on a small patch) and lose traction, rendering turning impossible. This doesn’t happen in Scrap Mechanic because the ground isn’t able to flex / bend / move. But in real life it would. Of course, you could just try and drive to harder land but, this still takes away from the machine. the whole idea of the tread was to take away pressure. Sure, it’s the weight of a tank, but because the contact patch is so massive the pressure would only be about 10 lbf/in^2 to 16 lbf/in^2. This is why tanks were made with treads, as soft terrain was a lot easier to pass, and this solved the glaring issue tanks had, if they sunk in soft terrain, they would always bottom out and not be able to get back out without the assistance of a different vehicle or a big scoop as part of the tread - aka a log that was tied to the trads in these situations - and this was due to the fact that that the bottoms of tanks where large and flat, meaning that they exerted a lot less pressure than even the tank's treads. This is why the solution with the wheel would not be the most practical. I understand that it is very hard to come up with a solution that takes everything that I've said into mind, but you guys's creativity has never failed to blow me away. The only solution I can think about is to try to make the whole big tread made up of small tracks that are perpendicular to the direction that the big track is pointed in. This way you could have tank steering when two of the sections are on the ground at the same time. Another Idea could be just to simply weld two of these things together, creating two huge tracks side by side. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I'd really like to see a return to the 'flip walker' using this jack-based turning. Hypothetically, you could attach a similar pivoting jack to the 'gondola' to allow it to steer as well. An alternate solution is using a set of lifting thrusters to get it into a 'hovering' state, then pivot it in midair.

I think that making the wheel base closer to the length of a track segment would make the vehicle more stable in the track, and less likely to tip backwards. Larger wheels might help with the machines interaction with the leading track joint allowing it to start pushing on and putting weight onto the next track before the axle crosses the joint.

Probably reduce your detracking problem, move your turning dogs to under the on the track, and add the inside/outside wheels at the bottom, maybe add those suspension components to help stay in contact on rough terrain and add weight in for traction, or put a set of wheels in on their side trapped in a track to hold it in
@Pystro
@Pystro 2 года назад
Looks like some guide wheels that fold out in front of and behind the bottom and top wheels could help with the de-railing. You'd just need to put them on suspension. Because you don't just need to deal with the situation where the track forms a rectangle, but also the transitions between those states where it forms a flattened hexagon.

1.Idea:no more Derailing by putting the sides and lock for the turns up by one or two blocks. 2.Idea:making turning faster. 3.Idea if the incline is to high and the top wheel doesnt Touch the top, put the Piston on another button or more to finetune the lenght. 4.Idea put high friction blocks on the bottom of the tracks kinda like table legs
2 года назад
Add another bar above the wheels that is low enough to prevent derailment, but high enough to not make contact when driving. When lifting the thing, the wheels will make contact and lift the tracks. Add a piston to the center of the vehicle instead and lift the entire thing. Then rotate the piston. A bit more unstable steering probably, but not unsolvable.

I think the top could be improved massively by adding a wheel on top of the tracks that pinches down onto the current top wheel. In theory, if it was big enough to not fall in between track pieces, then it could completely solve the cycle skipping issues. And for the bottom, one idea would be to make the retaining wall 1 block higher except near the turn hooks. Or maybe making the wheels 2 wide so they have a harder time slipping out? Either way, I love watching the prices of this thing being designed and refined. Good job mate!

You should try to increase amount of axes for the bottom part, and if you can solve the problem of bottoming out on 3 or more, you should get improvement in derailing problem, also, you can rise walls on tracks, to intercept derailing even more.
@zombiewolf123

First: the top wheels dont need to fit in the track. You could have arms that go out at the top then up then in then down so you have wheels on the bottom and top of the top section of track that would give better contact and might help prevent some derailment and maintain traction. Second: the outside of the track loop does not need to be flat, you could add texture to give better traction and stop slippage on hills. in scrap mechanics that will probably mean cacti.

Kind of useless as a vehicle of war, but I could see it used as an overly engineered, mars roving crop planter. Imagine that each of the track pieces were solid and spiked like a cleated shoe, and each of the spikes are narrow yet hollow like a traffic cone or needle and the core driving vehicle drops seeds through an auger on it underside as it drives. To compensate for the solid tracks however, you'd need switch the steering mechanism out with two wheels that extend out and lower from the sides of the core vehicle instead of in front of it, and the wheels would need to turn in opposite directions like an RC car can to turn in place. It'd also have to be a drone or remote controlled... because you wouldn't be able to see where the hell you're going either... but personally, I wouldn't want to be inside that thing as it operates anyway.

Maybe have a frame that folds up to the backside with a couple sets of tires (maybe folding inwards when not in operation for clearance) with semi-stiff suspension on the tires so that you can increase the length of the vehicle momentarily and lift the mid section (the current rear) to increase the probability of it succeeding the climb? If you do try this be sure not to make the extension too long or it may bind/prevent the track and be unfunctional.

If you remove the beams in between the two sides and use better track guidance (like you did in your first video of this design), adapt the propelling of the wheels at the sides, (make it independent) you might revert this machine to proper tank steering? I like the idea of improving this machine as it is actually showing the evolution of tank treads very nicely. A bit like your evolution challenges IRL :) It seems that the development of rudimentary track designs was made during WW1 and perfected after that, also for agricultural and ground moving vehicles.

I say we not only have The Wheels on the inside of the track having little slots for them like they are now but say placing a block and then adding another wheel on the outside of that block so the derailing wouldn't really happen because preventing side-to-side motion and also I say increase the tire size so you have more contact with the wheels and going over the gaps between the tracks themselves would be a lot easier transition between each track possibly even adding suspension if you're worried about friction problems probably add some high-friction block on the outside

Wow! Heck of a job improving the function of this bonkers design! lol! One improvement I suggest, is instead of having the one location where you can set your hooks to lift the track for steering, use pipe pieces and run it as far along each rail as you can. This will give you a few more different options for steering locations, and as a side bonus, it should almost completely fix your derailment issues.

Verry fun, I suspect you would only be able to turn an IRL version when it's in the transitory state of 1 track on the ground.

How about a Kugelpanzer? it may be tough cause of the angles but i think you can do it!!

you could try to make its wheels locked into the track by putting guards on top to prevent them from slipping out, possibly with some sort of suspension to grip it on both the top and bottom and turn the correct way on both sides. Also if it's meant to be an engine of war it would probably need to be armored to protect the driver. Also it's _really_ unstable because of how tall it is vs its... wheel...track...base. Overall it is interesting as a historical curiosity and an early iteration on what would eventually become the tank tread, but it's pretty clear why the modern design is superior.

Crazy idea, but why not suspension for the bottom wheels? And to solve the top derailing why not add a wheel that goes out to the sides, then up, in, and finally back down onto the top. Granted then you would also need to add tracks to the outside of the sections. But that would also solve the issue with sections coming up at the wrong point. Anyway, good video. looking forward to how you solve this.

you should make episodes called "Fixing Failure" where you find creations on the workshop and fix/make them better

Suggestion: You should try building the Hafner Rotabuggy. Either in scrap mechanic or trailmakers I think it would be fun to try. It’s a half helicopter half buggy vehicle from 1944.

just needs a little more weight lower down. A few more blocks behind the drivers set will help prevent derailing. Then it may be time to make this thing battle ready. Weapon mounts on the sides perhaps?

You should definitely put a bunch of small wheels hardbound to the track all along it for better grip on the terrain

I did some math and its complicated to explain in a comment, but make the minimum angle between two tracks should be exactly 60°(or else a bit less, if exactly 60° is impossible with the buildgrid and stuff), this is the largest angle possible without the top lifting up. This wil not prevent the top from lifting up, but it causes the top not being forced to lift up while still supporting the sides of the top most track to prevent it from going at an angle and sliding off the top wheel. Btw I'll try to explain the maths in the comment of this comment

The only other improvement I would make is if its possible, put the top wheels on a logic gate with a switch so you can separately control them, and if that's not possible put a double bearing on the wheels so you can have separate control with a bearing

18:15 (with pistons) raise the tip of your vehicle and thus shift the weight forward so that the construction gives way.
@I_want_White_Cheddar_Popcorn
You should do the British version of this, would be simpler, it was basically a wheel with rockets attached, its job was to barrel through barbed wire to allow infantry to go through, the downside was that it was a circle, on rough terrain, and it was supposed to go straight. On rough terrain. Yeah now you can see why that was a problem, and it was also very skinny

This kind of design did actually go on to be something. There's a drive called the Rotaped that some tractors used. Essentially the same concept but with some modifications to make the top and bottom links interface with a singular sprocket, a pulley system connecting every other link to keep things constrained, a system that keeps the top and bottom parallel at all times. I'm not sure if this system ran into any flaws, it seems to be fairly rare, but there's no way the Rotaped isn't an evolution of the Boirault.

I was watching and thinking having separate controls for the top wheel to fine tune track lay out on complex terrain would be an improvement, and for whatever reason it seemed like a rotating tri-wheel (like the "stair climber dolly/cart")at the top could be a good choice for power and traction. Also adding some spikes to the track panels could help with traction while climbing hills. Then again I've never played this game, but I've always loved day dreaming wacky inventions.

It would be cool to see one with weaponry attached. How would it work out? Probably on the side. And maybe even a multiple battle or race over odd terrain.

Could u make distance between top wheels wider and double them up like on a roller coaster, so they hug the outside track on both top and bottom. Maybe it would keep it from getting off track and keep wheels in contact with track.

How to fix the uphill issue: Replace the wood on the track with a block with more friction so the wheels can get more traction. Same with the bottom so the track doesn’t slip either, How to fix the derailing issue: Just make the sides of the rails higher, easy fix Then it should be able to go even faster and go over more extreme terrain. Also, you should make the holes in the track smaller because obstacles could fit through them and block the car’s path.
