This last year and this year, off and on, I’ve wondered how we can feed them more on the cheap and better quality food without breaking the bank. Maybe even if it’s rice and beans with some root veggies here and there in the winter that can get them by until spring for our gardens to then produce for them. I will be watching for more updates if you continue this and exploring it with you as well. Somehow chickens have survived all these years without commercial feed so surely we can help them out some and keep the egg production up! 👍🏻👍🏻

One thing about rice. It needs to be washed a few times after soaking in water to reduce the arsenic content. Chinese and Japanese cooks do this. If they eat too much rice the arsenic will accumulate in their eggs. Not sure if it is good for them long term.

I started doing the same diet. Rice, beans and split peas. They also love corn and sunflower seeds. Honestly I think it’s day light that plays the biggest role. My Americanas stopped laying and we gave them more light and they started laying again. But we don’t give them too much light. We will give them extra light twice a week so we can get a few extra eggs without stressing them too much. The cloudy days makes it hard.

@biblethingsinbibleways6106

Light plays a much bigger role than temp. At least until you are dealing with below 20 degrees or so. We use a coop light on a timer to mimic summertime amounts of daylight from late fall to early spring and it works great. There is still a drop-off, but without the light it's rather drastic. I got to it late one year and we were wondering why we were only getting about 30% production. Lit it up, and back to about 70-80%.

@lindaprice4762
@lindaprice4762 Год назад
Cats are obligate carnivores. But you can feed that to a small homstead animal with high turnover and cull their offspring for cat food. Remember they can and will eat all the offal. Just clean it proper to prevent illness.
@sarahwong5592
@sarahwong5592 Год назад
Cats are "obligate carnivores" and must *only* eat animal foods. If you want to save on feeding the cat, you can buy less prefered meat items like chicken hearts and cook those for her or feed her canned tuna and your meat leftovers, but cats should not eat beans and rice. Dogs have been domesticated much longer, so their nutritional needs are much more similar to humans (especially the diets of hunter-gatherer humans), but we haven't been buddy-buddy with the felines for nearly as long, and their hunting proclivities are the main thing we wanted them for anyway, so their diet is not as flexible.

@davidbaynard3466 Год назад
If you get a eight foot peace of stick pipe, split it in half and hang it a few inches off the ground and feed your birds in that, there will be no wasted food and it's much healthier than throwing it in with the poop on the ground. You'll also use less food.🎉

I make a 10qt batch twice a week of rice, lentils, split peas, nutritional yeast, hemp hearts, flaxseed meal, fish oil, whole wheat pasta, diced sweet potatoes or carrots and canned corn. My 12 ducks and my dog get it twice a day. I add some can dog food into the dogs’ portion, and black soldier fly larvae into the ducks’. They all go absolutely crazy for it. I cook more for them than I do for myself, although I could eat their food, without the added dog food and larvae. Btw, my five layers give me five eggs every day. One is on the nest and the other six are juveniles so won’t be ready to lay for another couple of months.

Under sized wheat, or oats, or millet, any grain works. Just soak it for 3 days. So there is always 3 trays in rotation. I still throw scratch for them so they get grit for their gizzard. I never go to feed stores. I go to a real grain elevator. Even if it's far away. I just buy enough to make it worth the trip. We have several food safe, resealable drums, with liners.

if chickens are eating their shells its because they need those nutrients whether it be the yolks (more protein) or the shells (more calcium). Crushed red pepper mixed in their food will help the chickens lay more. It also helps them to continue to lay eggs during the winter. The big problem with winter is the amount of light they receive. Now you can hook up a solar light to help their body believe they are getting more light. And they will continue to lay. But, I find the hens need to have a break from producing eggs. Because they need vitamin replacement if they lay eggs year round. And I used their egg shells, which crushed up really well and mixed them with their food. You really need to if you light them to have them laying year around. I grow up on a working farm and my dad and grandparents just allowed the chickens, ducks and turkeys to free range and fed them food scrape. And saved back eggs for winter and allowed the birds to just go the natural way. But giving them the Crushed up egg shells with their fed is a good thing either way.

Depending on where you live, you should also grow moringa trees and sweet potatoes. The moringa grows like a weed and needs no water once established. The chickens love the leaves. The sweet potato vines are an excellent ground cover and the more the chickens eat them back, the more they seem to grow. Im in zone 9b. Also consider growing mulberry trees. When the mulberries are ripe, they drop to the ground and the chickens devour them.

One thing I notice is you feed them their egg shells back and I had been advised that egg shells should be baked for like ten minutes and then crushed so that the chickens don’t start eating their own eggs in the nesting boxes. There are two reasons a hen will eat/destroy eggs in the nest. 1) lack of proper nutrition. Feeding them back their shells and feeding leafy greens really helps, plus bugs. If you depend on just bagged feed to keep them healthy, it won't. 2) jealousy! I've introduced new young hens that wanted to climb the pecking order and they started eating eggs, laying in weird places (my hens free range) and I had one young hen that was so mad that she jumped up on a fence and dropped her egg right in front of me, on the ground....SPLAT! I set up a couple more nesting sites and fed more protein (just in case it was a food issue) and it took a couple weeks but the egg destroying stopped. Cooking the shells destroyes a lot of nutrients and makes them harder to digest. I occasionally will chuck a cracked egg in the yard and my hens don't destroy their nest eggs...unless I forget to collect for a day or two (which occasionally happens) and if they accidentally break one, they will eat it but not touch the others. We currently have 14 layers and I feed Grubbly's layer pellets plus a seed and grain mix and grubs, but also going to incorporate the beans and rice.

If there is possibility of free ranging them in any way, then you feed them barely anything.. I have a fence around my property and chickens freely run around. In the morning when I open their coop, I always give them corn and what not. They eat a bit, and then they go roaming around whole day. Only coming back to drink water. As it gets darker, only then they come back to coop and start eating my food.. So once I fill their food, it basically goes for 3, 4 days before refilling. Note that before I started free ranging them, I had to refill their food every day..

Here is a tip for cooking. I call it the stagger cooking method. So, using the same water in the same pot. 1st how long does your rice need to be cooked for, 2 how long does your peas need ? Simple math. Rice follow, boiled water, then add rice, Say your rice typical cook time is 15 to minutes cook to finish. (Tip on water to rice) add another 1/2 to 2/3 cup water) second peas 10 minutes? So 9 minutes into your rice cooking, un cover throw in peas , stir it, cover it. You got it now.

I too have been experimenting with "homemade" feed and have yet to be able to get the price anywhere close to that of commercial feed. I have been using a very similar mix of rice/split peas/pinto beans at a rate of 1 pound of each and my cost is $1.22/pound whereas the commercial feed is about $0.35/pound. Prices are from central Texas. Also this mix only provides about 10% to 11% of protein, far below the 16% recommended for layers and as provided in the commercial feed. Years ago when commercial feed was unavailable and table/garden scraps were the chicken's diet, the expectations of egg production was not at the same level as our expectations today. Our grandparents may have only realized an annual rate of 100 eggs/year per chicken while today we are getting 200+ eggs per year. Therefore, more eggs, more protein needed daily. I am not an advocate for commercial feeds but I do feel that these homemade feeds be a supplement rather than a substitute. I am not being judgemental. I am just sharing my experience on this topic

I’ve come to the same conclusion my friend. Lately I haven’t had time to make my homemade feeds but I’ll maybe price it out again before winter and see if it’s cheaper than commercial feeds. When I made a whole grain organic mix sourced from Azure Standard I was definitely saving money buying in bulk. But yes it was maybe more of a supplemental feed than an all around feed. I’m still trying to figure out how to raise chickens as affordable as possible while still producing healthy birds

Hello, thanks for sharing your video and what you're doing! The most important thing is what we feed our laying hens, or chickens for meat, etc. We're what we eat, in other words, we eat them and end up eating what they eat. If they eat foods that are high-quality and loaded with dense nutrition, then those will convert in their meat and eggs, therefore we'll eat those with very high nutrition ! Rice and beans are very high in carb, and when cooked the lose their nutrients from high heat. I usually buy individual ingredients from local feed stores, that way l mix my own chicken feed for my chickens. I don't feed nor buy Soybeans cause they're gmo products and enhances Estrogen levels in them, thus goes in my body (no good). I also buy crushed Oyster shells (very high in calcium, and not feed them their own shells. This way their the calcium intake in their body is very high as well. There is nothing wrong in feeding them Beans or split Peas, but crushed and presoaked overnight). Feeding vegetables scraps are good, also l left them eat green cover crops I grow organicly in my garden. (I do grow various types of green leafy veggies and vegetables organically for them as well as for my family, and add them to my dogs food (I get scrap meat from local butcher shop, to make my own dog food, etc.). I hope I didn't offend anyone on here, I apologize if I did, to all of you be blessed! I

I recently started doing this, I use black beans, white rice, pasta, and grain mix. Where I live, I don't get easy access to a variety of bulk grains and beans. I had to ship in bulk beans and pasta to get near my normal feed cost. Considering all the rumors of commercial feed causing drops in performance of egg laying and quality lately, I thought I might try it. It's been about two months. The only thing I can say for certain is that I think I am spending a bit more to feed them healthier. But because not only the new feed mix is slightly more in cost per pound but also that I end up having to use energy to cook it, I might be just a few bills higher in cost. I am getting more in volume after cooking though, so that might stretch the period out before I have to buy again, so maybe save a bit of money there but having to cook it is costing me time and money there. I'm thinking of just fermenting this mix, but I haven't done enough research on that. I'm also growing my own fruits and vegetables to give them. Are they healthier? I can't tell yet. Probably. I also let them free-range so that helps more than anything to keep them healthy and happy. I'm working to find a blend and balance between cost and better feed quality. If you have anything on fermenting feed using these kinds of raw ingredients that would help out others and myself.

Make black soldier fly bins or raise mealworms, and find free recyclable compost to feed the bugs. You can mix things like food scraps with coffee grounds from a cafe, fallen leaves and those bugs will become food for your hens. It's the amount of fatty bugs they eat that determines whether their eggs are high in DHA and lower in omega 6 compared to soy fed hens.

That was exactly what I was hoping just to show that the birds won’t die if you do something else besides feed them store bought feed!

I want to comment on one of your chickens. The very dark one has an obvious area on her behind that is raw and looks really painful. This chicken is being abused. I sure hope you noticed it and are doing something about it. You need to separate her so she can heal. Then when you put her back with the flock put bag balm on her behind so the chickens leave her alone. God have mercy for her.
@onceuponatinyfarm
@onceuponatinyfarm Год назад
Already took care of that. I separated her in a chicken tractor away from the others and has grown back all of her feathers. I tried reintegrating her but the same thing happened again. I don’t know what she did to piss off the others lol. Now I am giving her away to a friends flock where hopefully she won’t get bullied anymore.

A few things this young man doesn't seem to be aware of. 1. Rice molds. Chickens suffer and die from aspergillosis. Don't store cooked rice in a shed. 2. Not knowing your protein or calcium content is a death sentence for your birds. They need both not just to lay but for maintaining their bone integrity. Their bodies are balanced and if they need calcium and minersls to absorbit and proteins for their eggs, take one guess where it comes from? Their bones... 3. Overcooking any kind of food kills off much of the nutritional value. I've raised chickens and other poultry for 60 years now...

When I was storing it in my shed it was the middle of winter and the shed kept it cool like a fridge. I would not feed them moldy food. I’m currently feeding them fresh rice and beans that I cook every day

Ive got 9 hens feeding them food waste from the food bank layer, and scratch i get. 8 to 9 eggs every day. now that we hit 20 degrees at n ight im getting 7 to 8 per day. Plus two double yokes every day. Your pen is too small or something. Swap brands of your layers or get more fresh and meat.

Yeah I just processed a few of my older hens and got back down to 10 hens so I think they’ll be more comfortable. I was up to like 15 or 16 and that’s way too many for my size run

I would never *pay* for Beans & Rice to feed my animals. There is plenty of bakeries like Bobs Red Mill that has enough spillage and grain and seed that doesn't meet quality standard that they just give out to farmers. Grocery stores throw out tons of produce everyday and restaurants, how about all those produce farmers they have metric tons of produce and scraps that don't even see the market. Another place to get free produce for your animals is Food Banks they sort out what they don't want and it's given to farmers also. So any place that deals with food there will always be food waste.

I’m glad you have a source for grains and seed but I don’t. Not everyone has that availability. Everyone would be getting free food for their chickens if this was the case.

I would've liked to have you summarize the experience. Either they love it or they're over hungry by the way they attack the feed. You can add cooked wheat and Flaxseed for more vitamins and minerals. Thanks for the video.

@@onceuponatinyfarm Most markets throw out tins of produce. You just have to ask. My grandad got all the thrown out food from restaurants and had free food for pigs. The would put the food scraps in a separate garbage can and he picked up every a few times a week/ .
